About the story:

A long time ago, there was a beautiful land made up of three nations: Fuji, Izumo, and Hyuga. This land was called Mizuho. The people of Mizuho disliked conflict, honored their ancestral spirits, and lived in harmony with nature. However, over time, they began cultivating crops, forging and using metal, fighting wars, destroying nature, and neglecting to honor their ancestral spirits.

In the meantime, various locations in Mizuho suffered from natural disasters like flooding, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. In order to stop a destructive eruption, the Queen of Mizuho, Tsukuyomi, sacrificed her beloved daughter Sakuya to the mountain, confined her other daughter Kaguya within a bamboo seal in case of future disasters, and then disappeared. Thirteen years later, Princess Kaguya has grown into a beautiful woman and her childhood friend, Kintaro, saves her during a riot. She rises against her “fate to be a sacrifice,” and in order to follow her own path, they both escape from Fuji and journey across Mizuho to discover the truth behind Tsukuyomi’s decision.

Broly is one of the last survivors of Frieza’s attack on Planet Vegeta that eliminated almost all Saiyans. The Legendary Super Saiyan’s huge physique grants his attacks an impressive reach and enormous power. His Meteor Ultimate Attack Gigantic Meteor lets him hover over his opponent and instantly unleash a huge blast of energy.

The father of Radditz and Goku, Bardock has perfected his skills as a mighty warrior in numerous battles – a character that’s easy to learn but hard to master. Extending his combos takes skill, but his invincible and deadly rush attacks are extremely difficult to counter. His Meteor Ultimate Attack turns Bardock into a Super Saiyan, channeling the might of the mysterious alien race.

Raising Arizona Review

Raising Arizona

Studios: Circle Films
Publisher: 20th Century Fox
Platforms: Cinema
Release Date: Out Now

Overview

The Coen brothers are distinct auteurs in the cinema making landscape which are known for making films that are made to both replicate and subvert entire genres of film. Their body of work attracts a dedicated cult following who appreciate the off-kilter style and narratives that their films so often feature. Raising Arizona is one of the earlier works of the brothers but it certainly worked to establish them as carving out a unique niche for themselves in the Hollywood landscape. Eager to immerse myself in more of their cinematic madness, I hopped on down to George Street cinemas to watch the In the House screening for the first film I’ll be reviewing of their new season.

Once again, our hosts for the evening were Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn who opened up the proceedings with lively interactions with the audience before settling in to discuss some of the film’s trivia. A tidbit I noted from their discussion before the film was the fact that Cage demanded that his hair be made to stand more on end the more stressed his character became. To quote Quinny “Cage is playing a cartoon character in this movie” and after having seen it, I pretty much agree with his assessment.

Story

Our story follows the flawed yet wholesome romantic relationship between convenience store robber “Hi” McDunnough (Nicolas Cage) and police officer Edwina “Ed” (Holly Hunter) who fall in love as Ed takes Hi’s mugshots over the years. After getting married and moving in together, the couple try to have children but their hopes are dashed when they find out that Ed is infertile. Compounding their misfortune, they are turned down for adoption due to Hi’s extensive criminal history. In the midst of their despair, the couple hear that a wealthy local businessman had recently fathered quintuplets with his wife. In hearing this bit of news, the couple determine that a redistribution of babies is in order and decide to kidnap one of the bouncing bubs for themselves.

The plot proceeds in typical Coen style with plot points and elements coming out of left field and then taking centre stage in the foreground. You’ll be treated to a significant degree of eclectic near-absurdism as new elements, characters and emotional arcs are thrown out of nowhere and immediately fit into the film’s twisting and wild milieu. Upon reflection in writing this review; I have realised that the Coen’s did put more foreshadowing into this film than I had earlier thought but were very good at obfuscating it in the general thrust of the film’s pacing. The two Snoat brothers (John Goodman and William Forsythe) especially surprised me when they entered into the film’s central narrative. It’s a testament to the skill of both Goodman and Forsythe that they are able to inhabit the screen as both central and bit-characters when need be with Coen’s highlighting or diminishing their presence accordingly. Similarly, Hunter’s performance as Ed deserves recognition for being able maintain a strong screen presence while acting opposite the film’s greatest asset and liability… which brings us to my next point.

A lot of your enjoyment of this film will rest upon how much leeway you’re willing to give Cage in his performance. Cage pretty much pulls out his trademark style for his addition to the film. There’s really no better way to describe Cage as an actor than Quinny’s quip about him being a living cartoon character. It’s a rare director who knows how to make use of this particular brand of insanity which Cage brings to almost every production he’s in but I know but I’ve seen it and I know it can be done. The Coens do an admirable job of harnessing the madness but gorram, they needed to get him to pull himself together on the accent.

What works to Cage’s strength is that since it’s a Coen Brother’s movie, which features the general narrative milieu I was talking about earlier, he doesn’t stand out as much as he does in other films.  I’ll even go out on a limb and further say that Cage’s performance finds a comfortable home with the Coen’s narrative. It’s an assemblage which works and ultimately adds to the film’s credit but if you’re someone who is adamantly anti-Cage, then I don’t believe this will be the one to win you over…

Visuals

The film accompanies the Coen’s offbeat narrative with an equally offbeat visual direction. There’s an almost uncanny feeling to the Coen brother’s visual style which makes their shots feel both realistic and not. There’s always something in the frame of a shot or sequence to throw things off kilter and break your immersion. Luckily, this effect works in the Coen’s favour as it helps keep the audience on the back foot and open to the film’s humour. It’s clear to see the hand of an auteur behind the wheel in this film’s visual composition and it’s one of the reasons why I feel the Coens are able to consistently find a cult audience for their work.

Audio

This film has an interesting offbeat soundtrack to it to add to the overall eclectic charm of the whole film. It’s a discordant mixture of banjos, yodelling and classical music. The fast pace of the musical accompaniment generally adds to the comedic effect of the frenetic action on the screen. The vocal yodels and banjo give the film a rural American feel which fits in with our characters of simple means and desires. They do a great job of accompanying the film’s themes and tones but ultimately don’t leave an impression beyond it’s runtime. The music does it’s job but doesn’t quite leave a bigger impression.

Overall

The film’s narrative is pretty much in keeping with the signature Coen style of absurdist maximalism with the ensemble cast putting in great performances to make the disparate story elements work together. Even Cage’s onscreen presence is giving a good home in the Coen’s extended stable of performers. Matching the discordant story is a unique visual style soundtrack which work together to add to the film’s overall charm and comedy. This film was certainly charming and although it is not my favourite Coen brother’s film, it is certainly one I enjoyed being given the opportunity to see.

For other films which In The House is screening, feel free to check out their schedule for the next season here.

GOOD SHEPHERD ENTERTAINMENT TO BRING ITALO GAMES’ PIXEL-PACKED, 1970s CRIME FILM ACTION GAME MILANOIR TO NINTENDO SWITCH™ IN 2018

New gameplay trailer evokes a stylish, cinematic era of intrigue and lawlessness

AMSTERDAM and MILAN Feb. 21, 2018 – Good Shepherd Entertainment and independent developer Italo Games have announced that Milanoir, an original pixel-packed action game inspired by the masterpiece Italian crime movies of the 1970s, is expected to launch on Nintendo Switch™ in early 2018.

Milanoir is also expected to launch on Windows PC and consoles later this year. For more information, visit www.MilanoirGame.com, and follow the title on Facebook and @MilanoirGame on Twitter.

DISCOVER NEW TOOLS AND MASTER ALCHEMY IN ATELIER LYDIE & SUELLE: THE ALCHEMISTS AND THE MYSTERIOUS PAINTINGS

DISCOVER NEW TOOLS AND MASTER ALCHEMY IN ATELIER LYDIE & SUELLE: THE ALCHEMISTS AND THE MYSTERIOUS PAINTINGS

Ace Synthesis through an Enhanced System And Track Your Ambition of Becoming The Best Atelier in the Country!

Hertfordshire, 21st February 2018 – KOEI TECMO Europe today reveals the all-new Ambitions Journal, alongside additions to the series staple synthesis gameplay, for GUST Studio’s latest entry to the heart-warming Atelier series. Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is slated to release on the 30th March 2018 for Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC via Steam®, inviting players to live the adventures of twin alchemists Lydie and Suelle, through magnificent landscapes within mysterious paintings, in their quest to become the best alchemists.

To help the pair reach their joint goal of running the best atelier, Suelle creates the Ambitions Journal where she tracks everything they need to accomplish along the way. The ambitions listed in their journal contain tasks related to the key pillars of the Atelier series: alchemy, synthesis, battle, and character relations. As these are completed, Important Quests are unlocked, which will raise the twin’s Atelier Rank upon their completion. This rank is extremely important for young alchemists as chances of discovering new paintings increases the more they level up their Atelier – and opening up the opportunity to undertake the ever-necessary alchemy exam, a Promotion Test.

Throughout their adventures in Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, the twins will find a bounty of resources which will be needed to create incredibly useful items. Synthesising items is a necessity for the twins to perfect their skills, as they train to run the best atelier in the country. The Synthesis system has been tweaked with the addition of Enhancing Agents, making the learning process easier for aspiring alchemists. The newly introduced Enhancing Agents attach new effects onto synthesised items and, depending on the agent used, will change the synthesis panel in unique ways.

Change Agents cause coloured tiles to transform into the color of the agent, while Colour Adjacent Agents turn the chosen tile and those next to it into the same colour. Additionally, Connect Agents change all of the tiles connected horizontally, vertically and diagonally to the chosen square into the same colour. Colour All Agents causes all tiles of the same colour to transform into the colour of the agent. Carefully utilising these agents at the right time can ensure synthesised items are even more effective. For example, bombs can have a wider explosive radius and perform more damage; while health items will have stronger healing properties.

A dynamic new trailer was released today, focusing on the prominent Promotion Test featured in Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Journey, alongside a bounty of colourful new screenshots which further detail the Synthesis System. These screenshots also introduce three new worlds; the imposing boss enemy, Falgior; and a collection of new characters: the famous pirate captain, Backen; the bright, noisy and energetic travelling scriptwriter, Drossel; the travelling puppeteer, Fritz; the ever-passionate town Blacksmith, Hagel; and the popular nun from Kirchen Bell, Pamela.

GoPlay Editor Review

Video Review

With everyone looking to share their best moments of video game glory on YouTube these days, it can be challenging to figure out a good gameplay capture set up. GoPlay Editor is looking to step into the fold by filling a much-needed gap for a one-stop solution for gamers looking to capture, edit, and upload their best moments. GoPlay Editor combines screen recording software and a simple video editor so gamers can spend less time fiddling with software and more time playing games.

Upon start up, GoPlay Editor sits quietly in the system tray. The software offers separate windows for capturing and editing footage. Right off the bat, GoPlay Editor asks for administrative privileges for Windows. While FRAPS asks for a similar level of privilege, others like OBS Studio do not. Personally, I prefer my capture software to fall in the latter category as the less intrusive the software, the better.

The recording options are limited, but straight forward. There are options for recording with a webcam or a screen. The webcam can be overlaid on the screen recording. Screen recording can be done full screen on the primary monitor or in a pre-set area. GoPlay Editor also provides options for adjusting the system and microphone volume. There are hotkeys to start and stop recording, abandon the current recording, and to bring up the recording screen. Video options are very simple. There are no options for different encoders like NVENC or Intel Quick Sync. Instead, the user simply has options for resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Its simple set up process makes GoPlay Editor ideal for those looking to start recording with minimal configuration.

At the same time, GoPlay Editor is not ideal for power users. Features like separate streams for system and microphone audio, overlay customization, and alternative encoders are missing. The lack of alternate encoders makes GoPlay Editor particularly brutal on resources, as offloading encoding onto Nvidia’s NVENC or Intel’s Quick Sync can reduce the hit to FPS during recording.

To test GoPlay Editor’s impact on FPS during recording, I tested the FPS loss on three different benchmarking tools. For 3DMark’s Time Spy demo and Rise of the Tomb Raider’s benchmarking tool, I used the built in average FPS provided by the respective tools. For Grand Theft Auto V’s benchmarking tool, I used FRAPS to record the average FPS. Since I had to start and stop the FPS logging myself, there is a slight variation between when I started and stopped FRAPS for each test, so the results will probably not pass scientific vigour. They still give a rough idea on the FPS hit though. I tested the average FPS with GoPlay Editor, GeForce Share, OBS Studio, and no recording software. GoPlay Editor was set to record at 1920×1080 at 60 FPS using the Smart Matching bitrate setting. GeForce Share was set to record at 1920×1080 at 60 FPS with a bitrate of 50 Mbps. OBS Studio was set at its default quick start settings of 1920×10080 at 60 FPS using the x264 software encoder running at a bitrate of 2500.

Based on the chart, GeForce Share easily outpaces the competition with the lowest hit to FPS overall. This is fully expected as Share uses hardware encoding on the graphics card along with some first party magic. While other programs can also use the NVENC encoder, Share always outperforms. Since GoPlay Editor is likely using a software encoder, it’s probably fairer comparison to pit it against OBS Studio set up to use the x264 software encoder. We can see that GoPlay Editor manages to edge out OBS by a few FPS. I did notice that most of the FPS hit occurs when GoPlay Editor is open, even minimized in the task bar. Recording then lowers the FPS by another FPS or two. Improving the FPS hit while GoPlay Editor is in the tray will be a must for future updates.

Video quality is easily where GoPlay Editor falls short. Similar quality settings to OBS Studio results in markedly inferior video quality. The Smart Matching bitrate settings improves the quality a bit, but there is still clear graininess visible in certain parts of the video. I have provided a side by side comparison in the video review, though YouTube’s compression may hide the drop in quality.

What separates GoPlay Editor from its competitor is the bundled video editor. It is a very simple editor, more along the lines of the now discontinued Windows Movie Maker than a full-fledged editing suite like Magix Vegas Pro or even consumer grade software like Adobe Premiere Elements. GoPlay Editor can splice together videos or edit sections out, add another video as a picture in picture overlay, and add a new audio dub track. The software includes a variety of effects for videos such as simple transition effects, Instagram-style filters, overlay texts, and fancy intros with custom text. Footage can then be exported in a variety of video formats or be uploaded directly to YouTube.

I like how GoPlay Editor overlays a simple tutorial when a feature is first loaded. It’s simple and lighthearted but does the job well.  The layout is straight forward and visual in nature. All the standard export formats are supported. GIF support is thrown in for your reddit needs. Much like the video capture tool, GoPlay Editor has just enough options for gamers with a low level of technical skill or knowledge to put together a basic video as quickly as possible.

At its $49.99 USD price point, GoPlay Editor is cheaper than many of its commercial competitors and is almost on par for features. It’s a simple, no frills software suite that will get gamers recording, editing, and uploading their footage in no time flat. Hampering a recommendation for GoPlay Editor is the freeware alternatives that are also available. OBS Studio has become much simpler to use over the years. GeForce Share is pretty much unsurpassed for those owning a compatible Nvidia graphic cards, and AMD’s Radeon ReLive is catching up. Making the recommendation even harder is the slightly lower video quality compared to GoPlay Editor’s freeware alternatives. However, GoPlay Editor’s saving grace is the simple to use video editor. There are some freeware and open source alternatives for editing videos, but none has quite established itself as a reliable must download just yet. The hardcore content creator is probably going to want to spend the effort to learn OBS and invest in more powerful video editing software, but the casual gamer who wants to make and share gameplay videos quickly and with the least amount of hassle will want to give GoPlay Editor a try.
