Sega Rolls out an Announcement for Super Monkey Ball on the 3DS!

Sega have now announced Super Monkey Ball for the Nintendo 3DS. The title will feature familiar faces such as AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon and Baby. The reason I think this is brilliant is that the series fits perfectly into 3D and I am sure Sega will make this newest entry “pop” before our very eyes.

Sega Posted this statement on their blog:

“The moment I saw the features of the Nintendo 3DS, I could not help thinking how perfectly Super Monkey Ball would work on this new hardware. I could quickly picture myself holding the Nintendo 3DS using the motion sensor and playing Super Monkey Ball” commented Toshiro Nagoshi, creator and developer of the Super Monkey Ball franchise. “The simple gameplay allows players to enjoy the 3D graphics to the fullest and now that we have brought this vision to life…bingo! We have our all-time favourite Super Monkey Ball experience with the new excitement of the Nintendo 3DS!”

Taking advantage of the power of the Nintendo 3DS, players can let themselves loose in each new vibrant world as they twist and turn whilst aiming to collect every banana in the fastest time possible. This latest installment contains three brand-new compelling gameplay choices including single-player puzzle levels, Monkey Race and Monkey Fight. These new game modes give players the chance to compete via wireless connection with up to four players in the best 3D social experience possible in the palm of their hands. In addition, Super Monkey Ball fans will be able to choose between the Nintendo 3DS motion sensor or the Slide Pad to navigate the puzzle mazes with complete precision.

Sega has already put an official website which you can check out here. No solid date is known at the moment besides 2011 but keep checking back and we will keep you updated on all things Sega and Super Monkey Ball.

F.E.A.R. 3 produces horror from labor

The F.E.A.R. series has always derived it’s scares from spooky environments and creatures that spring out of nowhere, or seeing Alma walking along a hallway and suddenly disappearing, or attacking you out of nowhere. Well now that F.E.A.R. 3 is coming out shortly, the reality in which these attacks and occurrences happen now has a name; known as the “Almaverse.” But one interesting bit of addition as well, is that Alma is pregnant this time around.

And with her pregnancy she is about to give birth and is having contractions, which is extremely bad for the entire world. As Alma goes through child birth she emits giant waves of psychic energy which spawns monsters, causes unnatural phenomenon to occur and tears the landscape apart. There are times you will be fighting one enemy, only to have a contraction occur and cause your enemies to change into monsters, or force you to combat not only them, but another enemy as well.

Don’t expect these contractions to all happen at a set pace either. They are designed to happen randomly as one would expect during childbirth and will create a sense of constant uneasiness as players advance through a level. I can see how it would work well during single player or co-op; but the art director, Heinz Schuller, says that they plan to place the contraction waves inside of the multiplayer mode if they can. Not so sure how this could work, maybe transforming your player into something else during the match or causing chaos in the middle of the battlefield?

Expect more scares from Alma and her pregnancy sometime in the early 2011 for the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Nintendo stock takes a dive

As you all may or may not be aware of, there was a press conference from Nintendo earlier today, revealing many games and details about their newest handheld, the 3DS.  Not only was there a handful of games announced and teased, but also the release date and price was finally revealed.  February 26th in Japan (March for US and EU) costing ¥25,000 (roughly the Japanese equivalent of $300).  This is so far the most expensive handheld in the history of Nintendo, costing about as much as a Wii.  This should come as no surprise, as analysts and rumors have been toting this price tag for months now.  However, what wasn’t expected was the after-Christmas release date.  Many were expecting (naturally) that this would be in stores in time for the holidays, essentially capitalizing on the holiday rush that the games industry seems to love so much.

In light of these new developments, Nintendo’s heavenly stock plunged dramatically.  Not surprising, as Nintendo also nearly halved its expected fiscal earnings from ¥200 billion to ¥90 billion, largely in part due to its high price tag and non-holiday release date.  Nintendo’s reasoning behind the drop in expected fiscal earnings is as quote, “The earnings forecast has been modified to reflect the trend of stronger-than-expected yen appreciation, current sales performance, the sales outlook for the holiday season, and the decided release conditions for the Nintendo 3DS.”

Nintendo, being one of the most, if not THE most, successful and profitable company in the industry is surely regretting its decisions to release after the holiday.  Will you be getting a 3DS in light of the high price and the fact that it’s releasing after the holidays?  Will Nintendo be able to turn its new handheld into the money making machine that its previous iterations have been, despite the extreme plunge in their stock in response to its release details?  Only time will tell.

Activision Confirms Zombie Mode for Black Ops

This is the news that Call of Duty: Black Ops will feature the fan-favourite “Zombies” mose first seen on Call of Duty: World at War. Rumours had been circulating over the past few days after a slip from a strategy guide, but publishers Activision and developers Treyarch were happy to announce today that the popular mode will be making an appearance in the latest game. Players will be able to take on the Zombies in four-player co-op gameplay.

“Zombies have been such a hit with our community that we were committed to bringing brand new zombie experiences to Call of Duty: Black Ops,” says Treyarch Studio Head, Mark Lamia. “We’ve taken extra special care to retain the essential ingredients of our Zombie game, and have also crafted a nice surprise for the fans.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops is due for release soon, on November 9th.

Play Asteroids on any web page!

I know this may sound dumb, but it’s actually pretty fun for when you are on the internet and can’t find anything to do.  Go to this website and drag the bookmark into your toolbar.  From there, simply click that bookmark to create a little triangular ship on the page and begin shooting stuff!  Arrow keys to control, space to shoot, if there are any hidden characters on the site, hold B to find them.

If you can’t tell, that’s Google’s homepage with me playing asteroids on it..  What’s cool about this thing is that it actually destroys anything you hit, ads, words, pictures, blah blah.  The proficient asteroids player could even use it to get rid of pesky ads on a website, should they want.  Quite the ingenious creation actually.

Its simple, mindless fun for free, so go try it out.

Story
“Several years have passed since the original Dead Rising™, and while Frank West was able to save America from a zombie apocalypse, the cause of zombification was not completely contained. In Dead Rising™ 2, continued zombie outbreaks have occurred throughout the United States and it is your job to stop them.” [ Via Xbox.com]

Five years have passed since the occurrences from the original Dead Rising, and now you are in a new city with a whole bunch of new faces. You play as Chuck Greene who must continue to supply Zombrex to his infected daughter, but Zombrex isn’t cheap and you have to go around searching for it. If any of you have played the original with Frank West, you can pretty much forget about him. The new main character and brand new story lets anyone pick this game up without having to worry about having played the first. For those of you who have played the original though, there are a few references that you will enjoy.

Gameplay
The game isn’t all about killing zombies, though a large chunk of the game requires you to cut through large hordes of zombies to get to where you are going. The main point of the game is to get zombrex for your daughter while waiting for rescue to arrive in 72 hours. 72 hours in game is about the equivalent of 6 hours in real life, but don’t think that it will only take 6 hours to beat the game. Dead Rising 2 is actually pretty hard, and may require multiple playthroughs in order to beat the game completely. There are tons of obstacles that you will need to overcome and tons of people to save. So even if you do manage to beat the game in your first playthrough, you can always return and save different people or find new secret areas or make new weapons to slaughter the zombie hordes with. The game is a semi-sandbox game, which means you can pretty much do whatever you want; however, you still only have the 72 hour time frame to play in so it isn’t completely open to you.

How should you go about killing so many zombies? Why not create a weapon, or a whole bunch of weapons. Throughout the game you will find weapons to kill the zombies, but the basic weapons are just the beginning. A bunch of the weapons can be combined to make even deadlier weapons. Scattered all over the place are weapons that have a wrench symbol on them, which means they can be combined with something else to make something better. The real trouble – and fun – comes from trying to figure out what else to combine it with to make the better weapon. Combo Cards are cards that tell you the combinations that make new weapons, and these are unlocked by gaining the level, finding the inspiration for the item somewhere, or by simply making the weapon yourself by accident. So while the game tells you a lot of the combinations, it is more fun to discover them on your own. If you do discover them on your own, you can get some extremely strong weapons really early in the game.

There is a system for leveling up as well, and this system is pretty similar to the first game’s system. Anything you do throughout the game will gain you PP (the game’s version of experience) and when you get enough, you level up. Leveling up gives you access to new combo cards, and also increases your characters stats such as health and speed. Almost everything about your character transfers over through playthroughs (Money, clothes, stats, level, PP, and combo cards); so while you start out the game level 1 the next time you play the story you may be level 20 with more combo cards, new clothes, and a lot more money to buy things with.

Co-op mode is a great addition Dead Rising and it lets you bring a friend in at any time to destroy the zombie horde together. A friend can drop in and out of your game whenever you want, and you can do the same for a friends game (if they let you in). The story progress only saves for the main player, and both players play as Chuck Greene, but the game becomes more fun and much easier with two players. Both players can explore the current area freely, and kill zombies however they wish. Co-op in this game is quite fun, but it is best to play the game by yourself at first to enjoy the complete experience of the games story.

Multiplayer is an added feature in Dead Rising 2, and in this case it isn’t just a slapped on bonus feature. Dead Rising is designed for singleplayer, but this games multiplayer is a good example of how multiplayer should be done. Terror is Reality (also known as TIR) is a gameshow that pretty much sets the foundations of the actual game. In fact, you start the singleplayer game by playing one round in TIR against computers. In the multiplayer mode you can play the game against real players and there are many more rounds, such as a round where you go around in hamster balls and hit targets, or another round where you use a moose head to fling zombies into a designated area. The multiplayer is quite fun and even lets you transfer your winnings over to your singleplayer game. On the other hand, there are connection issues and it takes a while for a game to be set up. Occasionally players will just randomly be kicked out, or you will be kicked from the game due to connection issues.

Audio & Graphics
The audio in this game only goes as far as the music and the slaughtering of zombies. Along with that, the characters are only voiced during cutscenes and even during these times the lip-syncing is slightly off. During the rest of the game, you have to read the conversations you have with the people, and this isn’t something you want to do while zombies are attacking. It simply would have been nice if these were voiced as well. Other than those few annoyances, the sound is quite good.

The graphics in Dead Rising 2 are good, but have a few lacking areas that cause the graphic levels to seem worse than they are. The area itself has stunning visuals and looks great, which presents a perfect place to explore and discover new places in. On the other hand, the textures aren’t awesome up close, but there is an easy reason behind this. In order to fit so many zombies on screen at once, the developers had to cut some things from the visual aspect of the game. These cuts include the textures looking poor up close, and the lack in graphics at this level help keep the frame rate from stuttering and slowing down. This is all good in theory, but the game still has some framerate issues during big slaughters and when you run into a lot of zombies. The issues aren’t severe but they are still noticeably there.

Achievements
The achievements are definitely geared towards completionists. Every achievement has something to do with getting everything within the game, and doing everything you could possibly do. Beating the game, collecting all combo cards, entering every store, trying on every piece of clothing, using every single weapons; the list goes on and on. You can even see for yourself in the list. On the other hand, if you are going to play this game at least you now have a reason for doing everything available to you. This is a prime example of an achievement list adding value to the game. While the achievement list itself isn’t easy, it also isn’t hard and only requires you to do everything in the game. Also, many of the achievements carry over through multiple playthroughs, which gives you a perfect excuse to play over and over again.
Check out the achievement list by clicking here.

Overview
Aside from a few annoying aspects, Dead Rising 2 is an incredibly fun game. Once you get past the incredibly long load times, having to read most of the dialogue and having to run 10 miles to save; you can enjoy this zombie slaughter game in all of its glory. The game pretty much lets you do whatever you want, so it appeals to an extremely large audience. Want to just go out and kill zombies with deadly weapons, go ahead. Want to actually follow the story and get saved, you can do that too. The vast amount of options with such a small time frame leads to many replays of the game, but every replay is just as fun as the first. An added Co-op mode, and some pretty fun multiplayer modes adds even more replayability to the game. Of course, if you don’t like zombies and don’t care about killing thousands of them, this game is definitely not for you. For everyone else, what is better than slaughtering thousands of zombies? Nothing I tell you! Nothing!!

Fall 2010 Anime Preview Series – Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector

0

What good anime season would there be if there weren’t a giant mecha anime to go along with all of the other shows? Well don’t have to worry about this season because Super Robot Wars OG is right there for everyone to get their giant robot fix.

But what is this anime all about? Well it turns out that it is an adaptation of the Super Robot Wars video games that have been developed by Banpresto for many many years and that the OG in the anime’s name actually stands for Original Generation, the GBA game which the whole season balances it’s story around. The planet has been invaded by aliens known as the Aerogaters and after just suffering a war against a rebellious group named the Divine Crusaders, the Earth has formed themselves under a new leader named Briad Midcrid.

Now Brian Midcrid has decided that the best way to defeat the alien forces invading the planet is to form the “Aegis Plan” and lead the way into battle against the Aerogater aliens. The SRX Team that leads the way containing; Ryuusei Date, Rai F. Branstein, Kobayashia Aya, and the ATX Team consisting of Nanbu Kyousuke, Excellen Browning, and Brooklyn Luckfield. Each of these soldiers have a special psychic power which gives them the edge in battle against the aliens and the remnants of the Divine Crusaders. Little do they know an even more powerful force is slowly traveling towards earth.

With all the action this series is sure to provide, Super Robot Wars OG will be rivaling Iron Man this season for which one will have the most action, and my bet is on Iron Man. Time will tell though how things turn out as I am also interested in seeing how their psychic powers will factor into their battles against the enemy.

Fall 2010 Anime Preview Series – Sora no Otoshimono Forte

0

What do you do when an angel with the powers to warp time and space suddenly appears infront of you and will obey any of your wishes and calls you her master? Well if you are Sakurai Tomoki then you are going to use her powers for your own gain. This anime Sora no Otoshimono Forte is actually the second season of Sora no Otoshimono after the first season left it wide open before. The said angels are actually angeloids which come from a different world and have various powers that are beyond human imagination. Needless to say this Anime is very hilarious in appearance and will most likely raise a chuckle out of everyone who watches it, bearing in mind though that some of the humor is very idiotic. But also along with that is the fact that this anime is also considered an ecchi one, which means it will occasionally have acts commited by Tomoki that will cause the girls around him to despise him as a pervert.

The series this time around will see another new angeloid, named Astraea placed into the world of Ikaros and Nymph, the two resident angeloids. Except this angeloid is sent from Nymph’s previous master to eliminate Tomoki for getting in the way of the Master of the Sky’s plan to retake Ikaros back to their world. How will they prevent Astraea from killing Tomoki and taking away Ikaros? Well all I can say for sure is the fact that it will probably result in many hilarious situations. With the a touching romance story mixed in with dumb laughs and a perverted main character this anime sequel looks to live up to the first season’s expectations.

Fall 2010 Anime Preview Series – Iron Man

0

Hello everyone, as you may have known I’m the resident Anime reporter of the Capsule Computer machine and I’m about to start working on giving everyone a taste of what is happening in the world of Anime per week by doing summaries of a certain amount of shows every week as they air so everyone can see the enjoyment and get interested in it themselves.

First right off the bat we have an Anime made from a character that needs no introduction. Iron Man the anime has been developed with permission from Marvel and the studio MADHHOUSE is now at the helm of telling the story of Tony Stark. Everyone knows how the story goes, but for those who do not here is a small preview.

Tony Stark is a very wealthy man and extremely intelligent with his engineering. The only problem is that he has been kidnapped and forced to build a weapon of mass destruction to use against his country. But rather than working on the weapon he builds his own power suit and escapes. Once he arrives home he redesigns his suit and begins to battle against crime and terrorists.

Exactly what we will be seeing is yet to be known, but with the trailer we can see below the art direction is extremely well funded and drawn. It will be very interesting to see if they will keep up the level of animation throughout the twelve episode series, and how well the action oriented Anime will end up fairing in Japan.
