Kinect Adventures – Review

Game Name: Kinect Adventures
Platforms: Xbox 360
Publisher(s): Microsoft
Developer(s): Good Science Studio
Price: Free with a purchase of Kinect

Story
Kinect Adventures puts you into the shoes of adventurers who are searching for living statues. Statues that are actually alive! In order to acquire these statues, you have to do a series of minigames that are located in multiple areas. The game is basically a series of minigames with a tacked on story behind it, to give purpose for doing the minigames.

Gameplay
Kinect Adventures is a group of 5 minigames. Each minigame shows off a different aspect of the motion control or a different way of implementing the motion control. The 5 minigames include: 20,000 Leaks, River Rush, Rallyball, Reflex Ridge and Space Pop. 20,000 leaks requires you to plug up holes that are caused by fish while you stand in a box underwater. This particular game will have you acting like a mime as you put your hands, feet, and head onto all the holes in an imaginary wall in front of you or to the side of you. River Rush is all about collecting tokens as you rush down fast rapids in a floating raft. You have to step side to side in order to move the raft and jump up in order to cause the raft to jump. Rallyball, one of the more entertaining games, plays a lot like racket ball except without the racket. You have to propel the ball towards the wall and break the targets and other blocks located on the wall. As you hit the targets you may get multipliers and then as the ball or balls comes back at you, you stop them from getting past you. Reflex Ridge has you jumping, ducking, and weaving your way through a sort of rollercoaster obstacle course. Finally space pop places you into a no gravity zone and you must fly around by flapping your arms like wings and moving forward, backwards, or side to side in order to pop all the bubbles.

There are some multiplayer capabilities in the game as well. Multiplayer in Kinect Adventures lets friends jump in and out at any time. The Kinect will detect the second player and they will be able to control their own person. The only real problem, is that in most of the minigames a second player is more of a hindrance than an actual help. You have to be extremely well coordinated with the second player in order to get good scores on the minigames.

A few bonuses in the game include saving and sending pictures and recording and saving living statues. While you play the minigames, random pictures of you will be taken and given captions. These pictures can be saved and shared with friends. You can also record voice and movement for the living statues you unlock. These living statues can be uploaded to the web and shared on a specially designed site for the game.

Audio & Graphics
The audio in the game is lacking, with just a few voices in order to accommodate the younger kids. The soundtrack also doesn’t change much. While the initial soundtrack has an adventure undertone that you would expect in any adventure setting. Since it doesn’t change much throughout the course of the game it quickly becomes worn out and less impressive. Two or three more audio tracks would have helped create a much deeper experience.

Just like the audio, the graphics don’t change much as well. Although there are multiple levels and “supposed” difficulties the scenery around you doesn’t alter all that much. Each minigame has a specific area, and each alteration of the same minigame looks exactly the same. In a sense, there is really only 5 different locations, one for each minigame: in a stadium,  on a river, above a forest, underwater, and in outerspace. While it may sound like, a new map per minigame type is great, the lack of alterations between minigame variations cause them all to blur into each other and seem like a much smaller game.

Achievements
The achievements are easy, and don’t take much time at all. The biggest problem with them, is keeping yourself from becoming bored before you finish them all. They require you to pretty much play every aspect of the game. Sadly the game likes to repeat itself a lot, causing for a repetitive gameplay experience. There are some online achievements, as well as achievements for completing everything. It shouldn’t be that hard to complete every achievement, and may only get tedious near the end. There are also 10 avatar awards, which include a complete set of adventurers clothes for both the male and female gender. These clothes can be acquired by simply beating all of the minigames located within the main course of the game.

Overview
Kinect Adventurers comes free with every purchase of Kinect and only has one goal: to show off the technology of Kinect. The five minigames located within the game do an extremely good job at showing off what is possible with Kinect, but sadly it stops there. There isn’t much keeping someone playing the game, and once the initial thrill of the minigames wear off they become quite repetitive. The scenery doesn’t change much, and actual goal of the game is pretty pointless. Luckily the game is free, and you don’t need to worry about whether or not to actually purchase it. There is a multiplayer feature and the ability to save and share pictures, but other than that the game is short, simple, and only provides initial fun. It’s like the game serves only to tell the purchaser “This is what Kinect can do, now go buy other games.”

Kinect Review

Kinect is Microsoft’s creation for the new generation of gaming. Microsoft has placed tons of funds into advertising Kinect, from their over the top reveal at E3 using Cirque du Soleil to the many commercials and promotions trying to bring in both casual as well as core gamers. Microsoft is the last console owner to release its version of a motion controller, and they decided to go all out by completely removing the controller and just leaving the motion.

Kinect comes with a bunch of features, such as three cameras and four microphones. I’m not exactly sure why there are four microphones but supposedly it has something to do with Kinect’s extremely good voice recognition. With the three cameras, Kinect is able to catch the motion of your body. You can wave your hands, move side to side, move forward or back, move your head, move your legs, jump up and down, and pretty much any other motion. If your avatar is currently tracking your body movement, then that avatar will copy what you do. The reaction is instant, and it’s like seeing an avatar version of yourself. The only complaint I had was that it can’t tell if you turn around, it gets all glitchy if you try it. What reason would you want to play backwards? I don’t know, but I’m sure you can find one. As for the voice recognition, it is superb. Even people with lisps or even a heavy accent can use Kinect’s voice recognition without any problem. Microsoft has gone through a lot of trouble to enable it for everyone that speaks english.

What can you do with total motion control and voice recognition? Many games are implementing both, and the Kinect Dashboard lets you go through and look at all your stuff using only your voice or your hands. You can also surf through videos and music in the improved Zune app on the Xbox dashboard. This makes it extremely easy to navigate the Xbox without ever having to pick up your controller. Of course, if you actually want to play a game that needs a controller, you are going to have to pick up the controller once the game loads.

One of the more subtle but awesome additions is Kinect’s Video chat. It basically works like a new and improved video chat using the Kinect software rather than a basic webcam. Since it uses the Kinect software it is able to track you movements. As you walk around the room talking to the person over the internet, Kinect will keep you in frame. If someone else joins you, Kinect will adjust to fit both people into frame. This video feature shows a lot of the capabilities that are within Kinect.

This brings me to the biggest problem that is found in Kinect: It requires a large empty room to be used successfully. If you live in a small apartment or plan to play this in a small room, you are probably going to run into problems when using it. Kinect requires a certain amount of space to be used correctly. All games require a different amount of space; however, the average is about 7 feet. You have to be able to stand 7 feet away from your the device, in order for it to work properly. Aside from this, you also need a big empty space to move around in, so say goodbye to that coffee table of yours. If you want to play with multiple people, you’ll need even more room. Most people don’t have this kind of space in their house, but it is required to use Kinect properly. As an example, in order to use Kinect in my small room, I had to get rid of my bed frame, move my dresser, slide my desktop closer to the wall, prop my mattress against the other wall, and then center my television. After all that, my back is still only about 6 inches away from the wall behind me.

Believe it or not, there are some complaints about the fact that the ever present eye of the Kinect is a little creepy. Since the Kinect is always on as long as your Xbox is on, it is as if it is always looking at you even when you aren’t really using it. Three Cameras can do a lot, especially when connected to the internet. Since it also has the ability to record video and snap pictures, not knowing what your Kinect is doing at any given moment can be kind of creepy. My friend actually has a towel on top of his unit whenever he isn’t using it. I on the other hand don’t really care. It’s all a preference thing.

While Kinect is an awesome technological feet, what is really going to make or break Kinect is the games being released on it. Currently all games that are coming out seem to be geared towards a younger, more casual audience. Kinectimals for instance, isn’t even a viable choice unless you have a younger sibling or little kids in the house. Like all motion controlled games, these aren’t intended to be used to unwind and relax. They require a lot of activity and can leave you out of breath a lot of the time (well, except Kinectimals…)

Any worries you may have had about Kinect can be wiped away. Aside from the need for a spacious playing area, Kinect works like a charm. All the kinks have been worked out and with the easy setup, anyone can plug it in and start playing. The price is exceptionally expensive at $150 (USD), but the slightly lower game prices ($50 USD) should help ease the tension on your wallet. With the current Selection of games, Kinect is perfect for the family or a younger sibling with a few scattered games for the older audience. Kinect is a lot of fun with a bunch of potential. Based on the future games, Kinect can really become the future of controller free gaming.

Over 100 Copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops Stolen from Gamestop…

We are less than 24 hours from the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops, and already the title is making headlines, only this time due to a Gamestop being robbed where over 100 copies were stolen at gunpoint.

Based on the news story from the Baltimore Sun, the two men that were involved approached the Gamestop at Festival at Bel Air shopping center on Bel Air South Parkway when it was about to close on Saturday night with semi-automatic guns and stole four cases full of Black Ops. Two customers came into the store during the robbery and were forced into the storage area at gunpoint. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

” ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ isn’t out there ’til Tuesday, so anybody that has it today or tomorrow shouldn’t have it,” Worrell said Sunday, asking residents to call the sheriff’s office if they’re offered copies before the release date.

Sad to see that some people can be that desperate but it is good to know that everybody left the store safely after the robbery. Police are also keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity on Craigslist and other methods of resale in the area.

Want to appear in a game!- The Witcher 2 wants you

For some lucky kid out there (or over 18 young at heart) their dream of actually starring in their very own video game cameo is about to come true. Basically, yall have until next Monday (November 15th) to dress up like the main characters of The Witcher PC video game and then spam the developers. The very lucky person with the best cos-play costume, will in fact get to appear as cameo in the next Witcher Game, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings!

Now while, you must be over 18, and some of the website has been translated from German, it can be viewed in English and best of all it would appear the the contest is available to everyone from most countries with only a photo separating the winners.*

In the game, “Dopplers” are characters who can assume the appearance or identity of another character, to blend in and assassinate targets. As such contestants are urged to use some creative control over how their character looks (ie. not identical to the ones in the game). CD Projekt Red have said in a statment: “Creativity and resourcefulness are more important than exact copies of the costumes.”

Grand Prize winners will appear in the game as well as receive their own copy for PC and Windows. Yes, winners plural with two people walking away with the lot! The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the highly anticipated games for PC for 2011, and will be released early with XBOX and PS3 to follow; it features nudity and violence as you assume the role of master Witch Gealt of Riva.

Fate of the World Beta – PC Review

Title Name: Fate of the World
Platform: PC
Publisher/Developer: Red Redemption Ltd.
Genre: Strategy
Release Date: February 2011
ESRB rating: Not yet Rated
Price: 9.99+tax for preorder

Pre order the game and get the beta at www.fateoftheworld.net

Story

Fate of the World is a dramatic global strategy game that puts all our futures in your hands. The game features a dramatic set of scenarios based on the latest science covering the next 200 years. You must manage a balancing act of protecting the Earth’s resources and climate versus the needs of an ever-growing world population, who are demanding ever more food, power, and living space. Will you help the whole planet or will you be an agent of destruction?

This is the ultimate game of the consequences type gameplay Mass Effect and Fable games are famous for. It may seem boring to some without the big booms and guns of today’s most famous games, but it does have a touch of fun factor to it that brings you back to the game to play more.

Gameplay

When I first jumped in the game I did not know how to play and I could not figure out either. I roughed it out though and soon got the hang of it. You need to send your agents to different countries. After you do that you can track the progress of emissons, natural disasters, and other things out to destroy the world and take it right from your hands. As president of the world it is your job to make sure it doesn’t fall to pieces.

For each scenario, the game gives you a budget to run with. Scenarios are things like “Oil crisis or “Global warming”. You have to deal with trying to save the world and meeting the peoples wants and needs. The game gives you some decisions on how to do this. You can jump ahead a few weeks and world events are now steam rolling toward the end of the world. It is not just choose this option to be good or choose that option to be bad. For example if a big oil company is harvesting oil from the atlantic ocean but thier way of harvesting is not very clean you have a few decisions. Shut down the plant but neighboring countries could have thier economy fall hard. Let it be and have the whale population fall into low numbers. Step in yourself and tell them to clean up their process or face impending shut down, which could get many people with money very angry and start to make your ratings fall. When world events come up it is quite unique. CNN news  may do a special on what happened. An event may come up on a local newspaper. You never know what type of new form of news can come up.

There is about 10 to 15 countries you are keeping track of. Ranging from USA to India. All of them have environmental issues according to the country. For example Africa probably will not have the factory smog USA has, but USA does not have the abundant wildlife and plantlife. The game uses cards as your main way to make decisions and affecting the world.  While it may be different and appealing to the eye, it can be confusing or hard to read at times. This may be my PC but a better interface could be utilized.

Everything you do has a consequence that you have to figure out if you can live with or not. You may not think one decision will come back to you, but it can have dire effects. I just wish the game was explained a little more as I was confused quite a bit at the begining.

Overview

Fate of the World puts you in the presidents shoes as you try to prevent the world from falling apart or speed up the process. President Blue decided to have some fun and speed up the process.  My agents were kicked from every country and the world did not look too pretty. If only Red Redemption improved on the interface and explained what you needed to do in order to be president it would be much better. It was also quite buggy and crashed on me a few times  (this will hopefully be resolved once the retail version is released).  As this review is focused on the beta version of the game, crashes should be fixed and an in game tutorial should hopefully be added – ensuring that everyone purchasing this title will know exactly what to do once they fire up the game and sit in the power seat.   Running the world isn’t an easy job and you’ll need all the help you can get to make sure you can make those right or wrong descisions for the benefit of all mankind or just yourself and the greedy billionairs stuffing your bank account with cold hard cash.

Capcom Arcade Review

Game Name: Capcom Arcade
Platform(s): iPhone
Publisher(s): Capcom
Developer(s): Capcom
Genre(s): Arcade
Release Date: 4th October
Price: FREE (DLC Options)

BUY NOW (FREE)

Yesterday I gave you a brief rundown of Capcom’s latest iPhone App – Capcom Arcade.  Today as promised we have a review / video walkthrough of the game in action.  Capcom Arcade is very similar to Microsoft’s Games Room on Xbox Live Arcade where you can play arcade classics for a price or purchase the arcade machine and enjoy the game as much as you like.

On release Capcom Arcade has the following launch titles available :  Street Fighter II, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, 1942 and Commando.  The games are near perfect ports of the originals – having gone through all four titles, gameplay will suffer in certain games due to the onscreen virtual controls.  The reaction times are a little laggy and unresponsive and not 100% accurate.  Hopefully with future updates Capcom can work on fine tuning the control system so that they are a little more responsive.

As explained in further detail in the video review – Capcom Arcade is FREE to download (160mb) Once you download it and fire it up you will receive Three FREE tokens that will enable you to play any of the four available games for free.  Once you run out of tokens you will have to wait till the next day to receive another three more.   If you’re desperate and want to play more you have the option to purchases additional tokens (coins).  You can pick up 10 tokens for $1.19 AUD (.99c USD) from the options menu.  Purchasing the tokens will bill your iTunes account once you’ve logged in an authorised your purchase.

Now personally buying tokens is going to add up after a while so if there is a game you truly love (for me that’s all of them), the option to buy a game’s “Arcade Machine” outright for unlimited play is also available.  For only $2.99 USD ($3.99 AUD) you can own the arcade machine, which I personally recommend – these Original Capcom titles are well worth the $2.99 price tag.  Purchasing these elsewhere will have you spending a whole lot more.  Along with purchasing the “Arcade Machine” outright you also have the option to purchase extra features within each game that increase your abilities, give you extra strength, more lives etc.   Everything comes at a price with Capcom Arcade and if you want it you’ll have to pay for it.  To purchase the Arcade Machine or the special abilities within each game simply speak to the girl at counter (tap on her) and all the options appear – Buy Tokens, Buy Arcade Machine and Buy Special Moves.

Capcom-Arcade-Screenshot-01

Along the top of screen when you’re browsing the Arcade room Capcom have allowed ADs to appear which I personally believe degrades the overall look and feel of the game.  The ADs appear over the arcade machines and are quite annoying, tacky and have no real relation to the game what so ever.  Hopefully Capcom listen to what the end users have to say and remove this in the next update as it’s not needed.

Capcom Arcade is not compatible with Open Feint or Game Center so you wont be able to challenge your mates online or compare high scores which is a bit of a let down as most Capcom titles are always best played with or against your friends.  What Capcom have done is introduce a “Collection” achievement / Gallery where you can unlock super cool retro wallpapers from each of the games by completing specific tasks such as playing the game for the first time, or purchasing a special move or completing the game.  If you’re a die hard Capcom fan I can see good reason for trying to obtain these achievements as some of the gallery images are well worth the effort.

Capcom-Arcade-Screenshot-12

On the other side of the Arcade Room there’s a cool dude who lets you know that you can link up your Twitter or Facebook account to Capcom Arcade and once you unlock specific achievements it will post these to your Facebook or Twitter feeds for all your friends to see.

Thats enough reading for now, sit back and enjoy the video review.

[pro-player width=’530′ height=’253′ type=’video’]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN8ACUP_Ak4[/pro-player]

Capcom Arcade is every Capcom fan’s wish come true, being able to take with you an original near perfect copy of Street Fighter II, 1942, Commando and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts with you anywhere you go is exactly what the doctor ordered.  Purchasing these arcade machines outright is the only smart choice as the token option will end up costing you way too much in the long run.  Capcom have promised that new games will be added every month to Capcom Arcade so if you bite the bullet and purchase all four arcade titles right now you’ll be looking at approx $12 USD and then only an additional $2.99 each month after that.  Is it worth it ?  Yes if you’re a fan – No if you’re not.  In the end you could always just wait 24 hours and use your three free tokens then go off and play something else, the option is yours.  For me, well let’s see $12 USD already deducted from my iTunes account … Ryu made me do it !! 😉

DC Universe Online Impressions

DC Universe Online isn’t the first MMO take on the super hero theme; we’ve had City of Heroes, Champions online and a few others. The difference here is the awesome branding of DC comics and the chance to play beside your favourite characters from the universe. The basic idea is to create your own superhero to insert into the universe, which immediately makes the character creation process all the more important and vital to this game. When you’re trying to imagine an original hero to make (which most people have at some point), you’ll definitely want to make yourself stand out amongst the iconic names. And that’s the whole appeal of DC Universe Online; it could be the game that successfully allows you to access your inner child and develop a famous hero/villain. Given the rise in popularity of comic book adaptions, there couldn’t be a better time for an MMO of this flavour. The question is can it pulled off?

All signs are pointing towards yes with developer SOE Austin showing some promise. Upon release the game will offer six “specs”, which fall into three categories. It’s a pretty standard MMO affair in this regard, two tanking options, two healing options and two crowd controllers to disable targets and what not. However all specs will be able to deal damage because players spend talents on individual powers, which means no purely damaged based class. You’ll also be able to toggle between stances with zero penalties during the action, which is designed to provide flexibility when grouping.  But the importance of class doesn’t become apparent until raiding begins in the later stages of the game.

This may seem like a bad thing, but the positive is that DCUO is designed so you can hit the level cap going solo or in groups, you’re given the choice as your class won’t be limited. The game is structured with open-world areas like Gotham City and Metropolis, which serve as main questing areas up until lvl 18-20. The rest of grinding is based around instances with quests leading up to them (lvl cap is currently 30). The cool thing about these sorts of quests is that in some instances high profile characters such as Batman for example, may be aiding you in finishing the mission.

The combat system plays more like a beat’em’up action game rather than a traditionally PC based MMO. Obviously the PS3 comes into the design here and whether or not it work’s on PC is yet to be seen, but you can disregard cool-downs or mana pools. The decision to go down this path makes more sense in the context of the DC universe, attacks occur in real time in relation to button pressing and the game world is largely interactive with an advanced physics system (no destructive  environments though).

However the environment is open to players for lifting cars, running up buildings, flying and throwing enemies. The freedom the developers are talking about is an exciting aspect and certainly adds another dimension to the gameplay. Another interesting aspect which I mentioned briefly is player stances, no matter what spec or talent tree you’ve chosen you can use an offensive stance, defensive and support stance. They’re fairly self-explanatory, but it does cement the class situation as providing more variety to the player in earlier levels. Specialisation does become very important later in the game though, for example a healing spec will always heal better regardless of stance.

Another cool feature of DCUO grouping system is what the developers are calling “soft grouping”, which allows players to complete raids and instances together without being in a group and contributors receive experience accordingly. This game seems to take the idea of anti-social questing to another level, but it’s a nice thought to cater for the people who would rather play lone wolf style.

Finally I’d like to talk about character creation, which is vital in making or breaking this game. No one wants to look the same and the developers seem to be doing a bang up job. Equipping new items for example gives you the option to show them or not, and another cool feature is reputation. No matter which side you choose to take in DC Universe Online, you will be able to form close relationships with the many iconic characters from the DC world. Apparently you can choose to follow certain characters, and doing so will earn you rep and give you some valuable benefits. For example if you follow Batman he will craft you a custom made Bat suit, which will have its own unique set of attributes. The same applies for every other flagship DC personality in the game, which should prove a hit with hardcore DC comic fans.

Now as far as the story goes to set this up game up, I’ve provided a link to a trailer below instead of going into the lengthy discussion. I’m not a hardcore comic book fan (don’t want to get the details wrong), but I am excited about this game, which proves to you that this isn’t just for the comic dorks. One great aspect I will mention though is the fact that at the start of the game you’re given the option to choose a mentor, Heroes can pick Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman, and villains can pick Joker, Lex Luthor or Circe. I don’t know about you, but the idea of working for the joker sounds bad ass.

DC Universe Online is releasing for the PS3 and PC early 2011 and the Beta has already started, unfortunately the servers will be separated between the platforms and there will be a monthly fee of around $15. Keep watch on Capsule Computers for a more detailed insight into the game once yours truly has their hands on a Beta for both PS3 and PC.

Sound off below if you’re already playing it, I want details people!

Babysitting Mama Now Available for the Nintendo Wii!

For those looking for an interesting way to play a game or the perfect gift for a younger gamer in the family, Babysitting Mama is now available in stores! Like most “Mama” titles, the player must complete 40 short mini-games with Mama. What makes this one different though is the plush baby that is bundled with the title that let’s players use it as a controller. Just pop in your WiiMote to the baby and begin activities from feeding, changing and playing peek-a-boo, to racing the baby through an obstacle course.

Here is an official statement about the release from Majesco:

“We are thrilled to bring Babysitting Mama to market,” said Jesse Sutton, CEO, Majesco Entertainment. “The game represents the alignment of true innovation, strong brand, overwhelming retail support and solid marketing strategy. We can’t wait for girls to bring Babysitting Mama home this holiday season so they can share this unique experience with friends and family.”

Babysitting Mama features six unique babies, each with his or her own personality and needs, along with a range of indoor and outdoor environments that Mama and baby can play in. The plush baby also “comes to life” as cries and coos play through the Wii Remote inside the baby, making it seem as if baby is responding directly to the player’s care. The game even supports two-player mode, so friends can see who the better babysitter is! When the game is off, players can continue to play with the baby, and even use the cradle packaging as part of the play experience.

Honestly, after playing and enjoying the recent title Crafting Mama, I have a feeling this will be filled with solid gameplay as well as appeal for parents that are looking for that perfect game for the kids this year during the holidays. The whole bundle retails for $49.99 and is now available wherever video games are sold. For more information, check out the official website at www.babysittingmama.com
