Story
Breach is all about the online play. There isn’t really any real story behind the game and throws you straight into online combat against an entire enemy team. Atomic has years of expertise creating military simulations for the US Army and CIA and according to them they have placed this experience into the game. As you play the multiple game modes the entire goal is to just win the match no matter what you have to do to win it.

Gameplay
Multiple modes are located within this game. Each mode tasks the players to complete a certain task as they attempt to beat the opposing team. These tasks can range anywhere from killing as many people to achieve a certain kill count in team death match, or escorting vehicles to a destination as you race against the clock. The multiple modes enable the player to play whatever he feels like at the time. Another mode is a capture the flag type of game mode where you grab the biochemical canister and bring it to the drop off point, this particular game of capture the flag only consists of one flag item and you must compete against the opposing team to maintain control of the biochemical canister.  A fourth mode consists of a domination type game mode where you compete to keep control of the most territory. The final mode is essentially a last man standing sort of game mode, which brings out the campers even more.

One of the key selling points of this game has been destruction; however, Breach isn’t just about the destruction of buildings on a large scale it is also about the destruction of buildings on a small scale. The unique thing about Breach is that you can literally shoot a single stone out of a building’s wall, or only a small plank from a wooden floor. This lets you create incredibly strategic vantage points that will assist the player if used correctly and wisely. On the other hand, Breach has ammo depots that let you replenish ammo as well as grab an RPG. These RPGs are in limited supply per round, but they enable people to cause some serious destruction to buildings and other destructible structures.

Tons of gadgets are also in the game to give the overall feel a little more variety. As you level up you can spend the credits you earn on additional equipment. The equipment available range from more protection, to sights for guns, and even to gadgets that help you detect where people are. There is one gadget that actually causes sniper rifle scopes to reflect light and essentially tell you exactly where the snipers are hiding. Another gadget is a motion detector that tells you when someone goes passed that particular area. This equipment can assist you in a number of ways; however, a majority of them only assist in helping players camp which will probably be a disappointment to many players.

A large chunk of the game is in fact camping and waiting for someone to poke their head out so you can kill them. Some of the game types force a more pro-active approach, but games types such as team deathmatch pretty much just has a whole bunch of people peeking out of holes they created in walls with sniper rifles or their preferred weapon. Occasionally you may get a match where everyone in the game is running around with heavy machine guns and spraying bullets everywhere, but if even one sniper enters the fight and decides to hide they will dominate until everyone stops running around and starts sniping as well. Breach is an FPS that also contains a third person cover system. This cover system lets you hide behind walls, rocks, and other obstacles. From the safety of that obstacle a player can peek out and shoot somebody, only to hide behind the wall once more if they get shot at. While this feature makes staying alive a lot easier, it also makes killing a lot harder. You can probably see how camping becomes quite abundant in this game. You don’t move that much; unless there is an objective, players tend to stay in one spot completely safe for a very long time. Many fire fights boil down to who has the better hiding spot and who has the most patience to wait for the best opportunity to shoot.

Graphics & Audio
The Graphics in Breach are actually quite nice for an XBLA title; however, the major noticeable moments are caused during the destruction of objects. First of all, the actual destruction is pretty cool looking and bricks or wood go flying and tons of dust and dirt is picked up. On the other hand, there will occasionally be floating pieces of wall that just don’t seem to fall. As everything around it breaks, some objects may just float there instead of breaking as well. This bugged me quite a lot at first, but I quickly got used to it and it doesn’t affect gameplay all that much either.

The audio in this game is where my major annoyances came in. First off, it just doesn’t sound natural. As bullets fly around and ricochet, all the sounds don’t sound as good as they could have been. The announcer is also incredibly annoying and regularly getting hung up on the exact same phrase and just repeats it multiple times right after each other. However, the biggest problem of all was when there was an audio glitch and the sounds just weren’t stopping like they were supposed to. Occasionally I was shooting and when I finished, the audio would continue, or audio from the game would overlap audio from the menu and just cause a mess of ear-aching audio all competing for supremacy. The only way to actually fix it was to leave Breach entirely and reload the entire XBLA title.

Achievements
The achievements in Breach are pretty standard for this sort of game. There are the bunch with killing so many people in each class, which can pretty much be done with the pistol or RPG as long as you have that class selected, so if you are bad with the class I suggest spamming the RPG or getting good with the pistol. The next round of achievements consist of rank based achievements; however, the top one requiring 48000 experience will take a while. The average range of experience points a player receives per round is between 50-150 (in a full game with max players). If you do the math, to reach that much experience you will need to complete about 480 games which might not even be possible if the game’s community dies and there aren’t enough people playing anymore. The final achievement requires the player to kill other players by crushing them. This achievement is near impossible, because it requires you to pretty much collapse entire buildings on people, otherwise it doesn’t count. Honestly, it is way too hard of an achievement, 5 may have been reasonable but the amount that are required is simply too much. I have played quite a few rounds over the weekend while I reviewed this game, and even during the times I was trying for this achievement I simply couldn’t get any of these kills.

Below is the achievement list:

  • Lieutenant15 Earned the rank of Lieutenant.
  • Commander15 Earned the rank of Commander.
  • Top Dog25 Earned the top rank of Commander Tier 3.
  • Agent15 Earned the rank of Agent.
  • Operative15 Earned the rank of Operative.
  • Specialist15 Earned the rank of Specialist.
  • Expert Sniper15 Get 100 kills playing the Sniper class.
  • Expert Support15 Get 100 kills playing the Support class.
  • Expert Recon15 Get 100 kills playing the Recon class.
  • King Crusher25 Successfully crushed 30 enemies with structural collapses.
  • Expert Rifleman15 Get 100 kills playing the Rifleman class.
  • Expert Gunner15 Get 100 kills playing the Gunner class.

Overview
Breach has its moments and it honestly isn’t that bad of a shooter, but it simply is just too normal. I don’t feel that it has what it takes too stay alive as solely a multiplayer game and this hurts it incredibly. The audio problems also hurt the game pretty badly and hopefully they will be patched somewhere in the near future. My best advice for a reader debating whether or not to buy this game is simply this: if you want a fast-paced close ranged shooter than you won’t like this game at all; however, if you are content with sniping from a range and spending a majority of the time camping and taking out enemies from a distance than you will probably be happy with this game. While the entire game isn’t comprised of only campers and snipers a majority of players I played with (including myself) picked up this tactic as we played because the game simply seems to push this kind of gameplay and not many people will enjoy it. Breach was a truly brilliant attempt at making a decent multiplayer FPS as a download title, but there are just too many things that fall short in the long run. While the game is overall fun, it still has a whole bunch of kinks that need to be ironed out.

Razer Releasing New Portable Gaming Speakers…

It seems like Razer are always coming out with top-shelf equipment for all of the PC gamers out there, and their latest product should have gamers cranking up their volume that extra notch with some cutting edge sound due to the upcoming release of the new Razer Ferox Portable Speakers. The Ferox is set to provide 360 degrees of omni-directional sound with “room-filling audio clarity” that will make each game/song or audio sound much crisper and more immersive than standard speakers.

“The Razer Ferox is our sophisticated, modern day boombox for gamers,” said Robert “RazerGuy” Krakoff, president, Razer USA. “Its sleek and compact structure takes up minimal space but delivers the crystal clear sound quality perfect for gaming on-the-go or for music playback wherever you’re at.”

Of course portability is a strong point for the Ferox, which is why Razer have given the speakers up to 12 hours of rechargeable battery life along with a convenient carrying case. For players that take part in tournaments or are constantly bringing their gaming on the go, this is spectacular news as normal high-end speakers do not have a great battery life whatsoever.

Features Include:

·        360° omnidirectional sound for all round clarity

·        Expanded bass resonance chamber for powerful bass

·        Digital amplification for enhanced power efficiency

·        Compatible with any media player with a 3.5mm jack

·        30mm drivers for exceptional audio quality

·        Rechargeable non-replaceable in-built batteries

·        Up to 12 hours of playback

·        Play and charge simultaneously

·        LED battery status indicator for easy monitoring

·        Seamless switch between On/Off-mode

·        Carrying pouch for maximum portability

The Ferox is quite sexy if I do say so myself and the price point of $99.95 (AUD) isn’t too shabby either. You can get your hands on your own Razer Ferox when it launches later this month worldwide. For even more information, check out www.razerzone.com/ferox

Cake Mania Main Street prepares to park on the Nintendo DS…

There is no doubt that when it comes to casual titles, the Nintendo DS has been the perfect home for quite an array of some spectacular pick-up and play games, which is just another reason the handheld has been so successful to start with. Majesco & Sandlot Games very well know this, and are preparing to launch Cake Mania’s fourth installment, Cake Mania Main Street, on the Nintendo DS. Instead of staying in the bakery like many past titles in the series, players will get to break out and upgrade their equipment within new shops including Jack’s Burger Barn, Risha’s Flowers and Tiny’s Sumo Sushi. Each location will also feature more than 50 upgrades to be purchased with the cash earned from the humorous cast of customers.

Cake Mania has certainly been successful over the years as a whole with over 2 Million copies downloaded and over 700,000 of the Nintendo DS versions sold to date, and Cake Mania Main Street looks to be the perfect addition to the series. No date is set in stone at the moment, but we do know that aspiring bakers will be able to get their hands on this one sometime this Spring.

Killer Killstreaks for Killzone 3

A trailer for the Playstation 3 exclusive first-person shooter Killzone 3 has been released showcasing killstreaks and its looking as brutal as ever! The game primarily focuses on the multiplayer aspect of the gameplay, with quite a few killstreaks thrown in at a stage know as Bilgarsk Boulvard. Killzone fans will also notice the gameplay mode being played in this trailer is ‘search and retrieve’ where soldiers must hold onto an item known as the propaganda speaker, similar to a ‘capture the flag’ styled game. Trigger-happy PS3 owners should definitely keep an eye on this title as it’s shaping up to be one hell of a game!

Dead Space 2 Review

Dead Space 2

Platform: Xbox 360 (reviewed)/Playstation 3/PC
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Visceral Games
Release Date: January 27, 2011
Price: $89.95

For anyone that played the original Dead Space then I’ll assure you right now that everything you loved about this game has been improved and enhanced in Visceral Games latest offering Dead Space 2. If you passed on the first one and are in doubts on this one then let me tell you right now that this game delivers full stop. This sequel is a vast improvement on the first game, switching from the claustrophobic corridors of the USG Ishimura to the large openness of the Sprawl, a highly populated space station orbiting Titan, one of the moons of Saturn where the horror takes place.

Story

Dead Space 2 kicks off three years after the events of the first game. Isaac Clarke mysteriously wakes up in a hospital ward on the highly populated space station The Sprawl, in the mitts of another Necromorphs (‘space zombies’) outbreak.  Not only this, Isaac is suffering from his own internal madness in the form of dementia brought on by events that took place from the first game with the alien artifact The Marker, which makes a return in this game with the Necromorph invasion. It’s up to Isaac once again to survive the carnage and piece together how another Marker made its way onto the Sprawl.

The story in Dead Space 2 is more of a personal one in my opinion at least, for starters Isaac is no longer a mute, silent protagonist like in the first game and this time around he has a voice and face to show off. Not only this, players follow Isaac down his crippling dementia and the madness that is in his head still haunted by the death of his girlfriend Nicole on board the Ishimura.

The environment change from a space ship to a space station (especially at the start of the game), allows for more of a ‘human feel’ as players are witnessing the bloody, horrific outbreak of the Necromorph first hand, as opposed to the aftermath of it as seen in the first game’s set up. Although the latter is still seen through audio and text logs scattered around the place which reconstruct the game’s back story, which again adds to the game’s ‘human element’ while at the same time sheds light on the bigger picture between the Church of Unitology and the Government.

Gameplay

Anyone that’s played the original Dead Space will feel right at home here. Strategic dismemberment is back and as satisfying as ever, shooting off a Necromorph’s limbs one by one never gets old. Players can experiment with some new game play features that mixes up combat, added to the arsenal are an assortment of new weapons such as the Javelin Gun, Seeker Rifle and Detonator alongside the favourites the Plasma Cutter, Line Gun and Ripper from the first game. Not only this, players are now able to use a Necromorph’s limb against themselves by uses of the upgraded telekinesis power which turns severed limbs into deadly weapons.

As a survival horror game collecting scattered ammo, credits and valuable power nodes is vital your survival, stock up on health packs and ammo because you never know when there is going to be a “surprise” Necromorph attack in this game. The upgrading system from the first game is back, and is an excellent incentive for exploration as you look for valuable power nodes to upgrade your weapons and suit which is a must if you want to survive. Suits in the game have been improved from the first. Now suits provide specific bonuses such as weapon damage or store discounts depending on what suit is equipped by the player, more than just a cosmetic change. Isaac’s melee attacks have also received an upgrade in this game and now pack more of punch than ever before.

One thing I must mention is that Dead Space 2 plays out quite linear, whilst there is a degree of limited exploration; in general players are guided down a pre-determined path finishing with a set piece battle. This isn’t a bad thing as the linear experience is great fun but the new location, the large open Space Station the Sprawl seams to suggest an open world hub rather than just down a set path. Regardless, it’s still great filled with very cinematic moments and fantastic boss fights.  Of notable mention set piece battles with the new enemy type ‘The Stalker’ feels very reminiscent of the Raptor scenes from the Jurassic Park movies. These new enemies will run, hide and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike, which is normal when your back is turned. Other memorable moments include the creepiest day care centre ever, flying straight down in zero gravity whilst dodging debris and another moment (without too many spoilers) that feels like something straight out of Gears of War 2.

New to Dead Space 2 is its multiplayer putting players in the shoes of either Sprawl Security Officers or Necromorphs in 4v4 objective based game modes. There is a slight story element tied into of Dead Space 2’s multiplayer depending on what map you play. For example in ‘Escape Security Officers need to traverse the facility to a set of escape pods to escape the Sprawl and in ‘Solar Array’, the team have been ordered by Tiedemann to fire the Solar Array upon a set coordinate. In all multiplayer games, the goal of the Necromorphs is simply stop the humans achieving their objective. Each team has their own unique powers and upgrades, the humans can unlock better suits and weapons and Necromorphs can unlock more health and improved attacks. Playing solo through the main game and switching to a team based multiplayer is different and fun. It does provide some good moments but honestly they don’t have anything compared to the massive set piece battles as seen in the later parts of the main game.

Graphics & Audio

Hands down this game looks and sounds fantastic. Guns and enemies sound like they should, sheer raw power. The ambient noises of the Sprawl, the underlying bass hum adds to the game’s immersion. The game’s realistic ‘silent void’ space vacuum is one that needs to be heard in person. The score and music is very good, especially the loud screeching upon scare tactics of the Necromorphs. This game is very gory – blood and guts are all on show here. Expect to see limbs being ripped off, exploding heads and a lot of blood, all presented wonderfully by the game’s great looking graphics which have been tweaked and improved whist still retaining the same look and feel that made the first game so memorable, much like the over-the-top deaths of Isaac Clarke in this game.

Overall

Dead Space 2 from start to finish is overall great experience. The Dead Space series likes to thank its fans PS3 players especially, as each copy of the PS3 version includes Dead Space: Extraction remade in HD for the Playstation Move. As well as, players that registered their copy of Dead Space iPad and iPhone will receive exclusive in-game content.  Visceral Games has poured a lot of love, care and polish into this game and it really does show. Set piece battles are impressive, challenging and memorable while they last. Shooting Necromorphs never gets old, and thanks to the additional multiplayer it won’t as 4 on 4 battles are sure to eat up the hours.

I give Dead Space 2 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC:

FFXIII-2 to feature an even darker storyline

In an interview with Dengeki Magazine the producer, Yoshinori Kitase, and the director, Motomu Toriyama, of Final Fantasy XIII-2 revealed some more information regarding FFXIII-2. Fans of Final Fantasy may recall the last time that Square Enix made a direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game in the form of Final Fantasy X-2; which was met with some derision due to the overall feel of the game. That will not be the case in FFXIII-2.

Translated by Siliconera, Kitase and Toriyama elaborated further by explaining that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will pick up right where FFXIII ended and will place players in the search for a mysterious invisible world called Bunibelle and the goddess Etro playing major parts in the plot. Also revealed was the fact that some other characters from FFXIII will be returning other than Lightning, but of course there will be unexpected changes to them as well. I’m not entirely sure how much darker they can make the storyline of Final Fantasy XIII considering there were moments of pure loss during the storyline originally, but we shall see.
