Secret World Trailer and Screenshots Released

I’ve always liked the idea of an MMORPG, but I have yet to find one that I find interesting. I’m not a fan of the cliché, Tolkien-esque fantasy setting that World of Warcraft started, and almost every MMO since has duplicated. So when I heard there was one coming out set in the modern day, but still involving a supernatural element, my ears pricked up.

At last week’s Game Developer’s Conference, FunCom demonstrated their upcoming MMO The Secret World, and today released a detailed trailer, showing off its features. Not only have they departed from the over-done setting of dragons, elves, orcs and all that, but interestingly, they have removed the restrictions they found classic MMORPG’s force on players, such as levels and classes. How the game will function without these elements, which may be considered necessary, remains to be seen. Some other system of character progression will take its place, and the developers are excitedly praising it as more “freeform progression”. The Players who enjoy grinding and levelling up may not find a foothold in this one, but the new system may prove to open up the fairly WoW-dominated MMO market.

The main premise of The Secret World is that every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend is true, but is hidden from the public. Players will join one of three secret societies, the Illuminati, the Dragon or the Templar, (arguably classes, despite their claim of no classes) and will work with or against other players for world domination.

No release date has yet been announced, but this quirky title is definitely one to keep an eye on. Check out the trailer and screenshots below, or visit their shiny new website, www.thesecretworld.com, for more info and regular updates.

Official RAGE Site updated | Free MP3 download!

Bethesda Softworks have announced the expansion of the official site for RAGE. RAGE is an upcoming FPS from id Software, due to be released on the 15th of September in Australia.

The game itself is set in the not-too-distant future after an asteroid hits Earth, and humanity has rebuilt itself into bandit gangs, mutants, and all of that violent, gory stuff we love so much. The website has added a new interactive panoramic on “The Game” page to show players what gadgets, guns, and vehicles will be available in the game, as well as show a little bit of the Wasteland landscape which quite frankly looks like the horror movie, The Hills Have Eyes.

However, we know the only real thing gamers like is free stuff, so Bethesda has given everyone another reason to visit their updated RAGE site: a limited-time free MP3, Burning Jacob’s Ladder. This song is definitely worth checking out for its haunting vocals and its country-rock feel…and if none of that floats your boat, then just remember you didn’t have to pay for it.

Visit the official RAGE site here, and check out everything this FPS has to offer.

Gamevil’s new app Kami Retro now available!

GAMEVIL has announced their newest app, Kami Retro, is now available in the App Store. Kami Retro was developed by Paw Print Games, and is a cute and colourful game that imitates the retro (now we know where “Kami Retro” came from!) games from consoles like the N64.

In Kami Retro, players have troops and must guide them to safety by placing tools, such as springs and ropes, on the screen.  The troops must avoid the obstacles in the game – of course, man-eating plants is one of them. The graphics are simple, yet likeable, and the music sounds like flowers should be growing to their tune. For those worried about buying an app and finishing the game in a train ride, rest assured: the game spans more than 60 stages across 5 worlds, which should last players a decent length of play time.

Kami Retro is available from the App Store for $1.99, and works with the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. Check out the trailer for it below.

Pilotwings Resort’s many Modes & Features detailed…

I would imagine that if any of you owned a Super Nintendo, or even a Nintendo 64 for that matter, there is a really good chance you have at least tried Pilotwings. The series’ quirky take on a flight sim experience was certainly one to remember, but now fans can get ready as Pilotwings is set to make a full return to the Nintendo 3DS with Pilotwings Resort. This time though, this flight out will be a bit different as the 3DS version of the title is set to include many new features that fully utilize the system itself.

Hang Gliders, rocket belts, and planes will be the aerial transportation of choice in Pilotwings Resort as players snag a license to take the skies of Wuhu Island. Instead of having a generic looking pilot though, this title will feature the player’s Mii as the controller of their choice of aircraft, and then set off on various missions throughout the very visually appealing world. The main goal is to progress in classes and as missions are completed, players unlock different times of day, dioramas, new aircrafts, and many other features within the game.

The feature I am most curious about though within Resort is the free flight mode. Free flight mode enables the player to just simply take control of a hang glider and take pictures of the many sights. Afterwards all photos can be stored on a SD card and viewed on the photo album of the Nintendo 3DS Camera. I enjoy free roaming and exploration in any game, so this may be where my time is invested.

I have some fond memories of the original Pilotwings, and hopefully this title will perform as good as what is being promised at the moment, which sounds eminent as the screenshots shown so far mixed with the 3D effects make it seem like one of the choice launch titles to go with for the 3DS. Pilotwings Resort launches with the 3DS on March 25/27 for Europe and the states and will be available in Austrailia and New Zealand shortly after on April 14th.

Bastion to arrive on XBLA this summer; PC version in development

Warner Brothers has announced that they will be publishing Supergiant Games’ Bastion. They will be bringing the very stylized looking action RPG to the XBLA this summer with a PC version to be released some point later in the year. There are have been no announcements regarding a PS3 version at the moment but this is because of Supergiant Games only currently supporting a PC and 360 release.

Players will take the role of “the Kid” who is a survivor of some cataclysmic event that has torn apart the world around him and leaves him with the task of trying to survive in a world of strange beasts and unknown threats. Players will be able to forge a wide array of weapons as well as gain new powers from specially brewed spirits. Anyone wanting to give Bastion a try can find it at PAX East this week at either the Warner Brothers’ booth or the Supergiang Games’ booth. We were able to discover a trailer, that you can see below, that is quite old for the game but shows off the first four minutes of gameplay with a nice sounding voice over.

Dissidia Duodecim Prologus coming to U.S. PSN on March 15th & AUS PSN March 26th

If you can’t wait to get your hands on Dissidia 012[duodecim]: Final Fantasy before it hits store shelves then you will be able to satisfy your Final Fantasy fighting game sooner than you may think. Square Enix revealed today that the “demo” which is actually a full prologue to the events of Dissidia 012 will be arriving on the U.S. PSN on March 15th and the Australian PSN on March 26th.

Dissidia Duodecim Prologus will cost only $2.99 and will also unlock Aerith Gainsborough as an assisting character for Dissidia 012. The storyline for Prologus will follow Lightning through a unique storyline of what happened to her before Dissidia 012; besides unlocking Aerith players will also be able to carry over any items they happen to acquire during the prologue into the main game. A localized English trailer for Dissidia 012[duodecim] was also released and you can catch it below to get a look at some gameplay footage.

Dragon Age 2 Infinite XP and Gold glitch already found

Well that certainly didn’t take long. Only two days after Dragon Age 2 was officially released in the United States there has already been a glitch discovered that not only provides as much XP as you want but even enough gold to raise a small village on your own. The glitch involves turning in any quest that does not require a cutscene to finish.

There are a number of these “return lost item” quests throughout the game and this glitch exploits some sort of problem with the scripting of these quests and allows the player to constantly rack up XP and money. This glitch of course takes a lot of fun out of the game due to the fact that you lose any opportunity to level up on your own through questing. Plus enemies scale to your level, which means although you may be a level 28 Hawke and your fellow party members are level 28, your equipment will only be that of a level 5. What this means is that enemies will be able to tear you apart because of the drastic difference in equipment.

Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 coming this summer to XBLA, PSN and PC

Whenever someone says that they play a card game against other people, many will think of Pokemon but there is another quite popular card gaming franchise out there that steps away from brightly colored pocket monsters into more violent grounds. I’m talking of course about Magic the Gathering and the fact that they have just released information about a new game to grace the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Called Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 there will be a handful of new game modes such as Archenemy mode, new Planeswalker opponents, cards and decks. There will also be an easy to understand tutorial which will allow players to be eased into the game instead of entering with no knowledge of the franchise. Magic the Gathering will also be at PAX East this week and will be demoing the Archenemy mode of Planeswalkers 2012.

Red Faction: Armageddon “Ruin” mode detailed; available at PAX East

Today THQ announced that Red Faction: Armageddon would have a new gameplay mode that you can either play online with your friends or solo. Of course this mode isn’t exactly “new” as it is quite similar if not exactly like Red Faction: Guerilla’s Wrecking Crew mode. This time however it is being called Ruin mode and will score you depending on how fast and well you destroy the area around you using the various weapons at your disposal.

Your score will then be placed on leaderboards much as it always has been. But one interesting bit of news to go along with this is the fact that if you happen to be attending PAX East this week you may be able to get some facetime in with the new mode as THQ will have a few copies of Red Faction: Armageddon available for play in the Ruin mode.

Xbox Live Labs is available in the US

Do you have about 6 hours where you can leave your Xbox on and do absolutely nothing with it? Do you have a fast enough connection where losing about 6Mbps of speed wouldn’t affect your other computers that much? Do you unlimited data plans? Are you in the US and are going to say that you are over 18?  Then The Xbox Live Labs Want you!

If you are in the US the community section of the Xbox Live Dashboard now has a new tab that says “Xbox Live Labs”; Click this, Download it, and play it. Sadly, you won’t actually be playing anything because the app is essentially just acting as a network stress test and you just have to sit there and do nothing while it runs.

It will run non stop, but by leaving it running for 6 hours you will unlock 3 achievements worth absolutely no gamerscore, and get 4 science themed avatar awards (technically 3, because the lab coat has a mail and female variant.)

The downloadable app is available through March 27 for the US only, and it consists of a bunch of network tests, during which you won’t be able to run games, movies, or music. It is kind of like running a game and then staying in the main menu for 6 hours; You’ll just have to sit there for 6 hours and leave your Xbox running while it does the tests. I would suggest going outside… or turning on your PS3.

The tests are supposedly for improving the online service? But everyone is really only going to do it for the avatar awards which include a lab coat, brain helmet, or mad scientist hair.

As I stated earlier, you can find Xbox Live Labs in the community channel if you are located in the US. If anyone finds some workaround to get it in other locations please share.

~NOTE: I did a speed test before and after starting the app, and my download speed dropped about 3Mbps-6Mbps. I have a fast enough connection where it doesn’t actually slow me down that much, but some users may experience different speed drops and it may hinder your ability to use other devices on the internet.~
