Supanova 2011 – GAME brings hands on with Duke Nukem Forever

The (really popular) popular culture expo SUPANOVA, in partnership with video game retailing giant GAME, brings us a nice surprise. This Surprise? the GAME fit-out, which involves dancing, cosplay and gameplay.

The biggest hit in this fit-out though was the inclusion of a playable build of Duke Nukem Forever for fans to enjoy. This GAME event was held in conjunction with 2k Games and Ubisoft and also featured games like Just Dance 2. Along with this event, GAME is also hosting their regular booth/store which will have for sale various pieces of video game merchandise, video games and other items.

The recent Brisbane SUPANOVA event had over 27,000 attendees and over 2000 of those had entered the GAME fit-out to trial these games. Both GAME and SUPANOVA plan on bringing this event to future conventions in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. So make sure you come along and get your game on!

Yes you read that right. NIS America has announced the news that Disgaea fans have been waiting for. Disgaea 4 has received a release window that has been narrowed down to September of this year. The full title of the game will be Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. Those who live in Europe and other PAL regions will be getting the title sometime in the Fall.

There hasn’t been much more information given but fans of strategy RPGs can get a chance to name a few things in the game themselves. In a contest being held called the “Dis-name-a” contest you will be able to submit your entry for the name of a sword, a skill that a sword user will use, and also a catgirl character. Make sure you keep your submissions unique and within twenty characters and you could see your name as one of the characters’. You can also check out the English Website which was launched for the game earlier today. Currently there is no English trailer for Disgaea 4 but you can catch this Japanese trailer that was aired at Tokyo Game Show last year:

Offspring sweeps nominations at 2011 TV Week Logies

1

It’s nearly that time of the year when the 2011 Logies is upon us, and Madman TV’s Offspring has been nominated for an overwhelming number of Logies.

Offspring is nominated for eight categories, including the Gold Logie, and is a story about food, music, sex, babies, and love. Safe to say, with that mix it’s no wonder this TV series is doing so well. Also nominated were SBS DVD releases Wilfred, Who Do You Think You Are? and Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam. Check out all of these DVDs on the official Madman website here, and tune in to the Logies on May 1 on Channel Nine.

L.A. Noire: Candy Edwards POI character dossier

Wow, L.A. Noire…you really are establishing yourself as one of the most anticipated games of this year. Rockstar Games have revealed yet another juicy piece of information from the upcoming game, L.A. Noire.

In the Vice desk mission “The Set-Up”, boxer Albert Hammond wins a fight he was meant to lose, which ends up drastically costing his manager and illegal bookies. When Hammond disappears, galpal Candy Edwards is the go-to person for information, and she seems to know more than she’s letting on.

Sounds exciting, right? This new character dossier shows just how extensive L.A. Noire is going to be as a  game, and the more we here at Capsule Computers, the more excited we get for this game (and we were pretty excited to begin with!). You can take a look at Candy’s POI (for those of you not familiar with cop lingo, that’s “Person of Interest”) dossier on the L.A. Noire website here.

Overview

Like a car along a highway, some films can stretch across a long expanse before reaching a destination. Sometimes, the destination is not what we thought it would be, but like the proverbial moth to the flame, we are drawn to the new direction in which a film has taken us. Some will love the new destination, and some will hate it, but you can’t deny that it is – if nothing else – new.

Dogtooth is a destination which is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. There’s incest, nudity, blood, and it deals with some of the most shocking yet intriguing issues that plague the human experience. If you can sit through this all, though, I can most certainly say you will be enriched by the experience and walk away feeling just that little bit more thoughtful – after all, the film wasn’t nominated for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award for nothing.

Plot

The film does, believe it or not, include a dogtooth into the storyline. However, most of Dogtooth’s plot is more abstract than concrete, more metaphorical than literal, and more perplexing than straightforward.

A husband and his wife have three teenagers, who they have confined to their country estate in a bid to protect them from the outside world. The kids spend their days working out, playing pretend games, or learning facts and figures that their parents have made up: in their world, a zombie is a small yellow flower and the sea is an armchair, and children aren’t allowed to leave the estate until their dogtooth falls out. They are fed lies that a mythical older brother was banished from the family home for disobedience and lives on the other side of the fence, and their parents keep them as sheltered as possible except for Christina whom they bring to satisfy their son’s sexual needs. Frustrated with her position in this family dynamic, Christina begins introducing sexual bribery to the shielded children, and what ensues can be described as no more than a completely strange, yet incredibly profound tale.

The storyline of Dogtooth is possibly one of the most intriguing that I have ever come across. Every part which drives the story is so deeply embedded in construction and constructing meaning that it becomes hard to distinguish the real from the false. The father and mother have created a cult-like atmosphere in his home, brainwashing their children into believing a different reality to that of the world around us. The script is wonderfully written: it is simple and funny, but still allows for the complexities of the issues shine through. The writers constructed it in such a way that there were awkward and monotonous moments between the family members to show the detached life they all lead.

What is so striking is that upon watching the story unfold, I was reminded so much of how everything we know is only true because that’s what we were taught to believe. Dogtooth makes you question, wonder, and rethink everything that you know in your life, but also it stands on a higher moral ground of parenthood. How much is enough to protect our children from the outside world? When are children allowed to fend for themselves? And how much control do parents really have over who and what their children become?

Characters

None of the characters identities are actually revealed – instead, they are known as Father (Christos Stergioglou), Mother (Michele Valley), the Eldest Daughter (Aggeliki Papoulia), the Youngest Daughter (Mary Tsoni), and the Son (Hristos Passalis). The only person with any name in this film is Christina (Anna Kalaitzidou), which really does establish her straight from the beginning as someone who doesn’t quite fit and disrupts the balance.

Most of the characters in here have flat personalities, childish tendencies, and are brilliantly portrayed by all the actors. The characters don’t act as a family; it seems a little more like an awkward tea party with friends you just don’t get along with that well. The kids – although technically teenagers – still have the knowledge and curiosity of a newborn puppy, and are naïve and quick to believe what their parents tell them as they have no other way of obtaining knowledge. By far, the most irritating one was the Son, who I felt served no purpose but to up the sexuality of the film. While sex is all well and good, there wasn’t enough ideological reason behind his actions to justify his existence. The Eldest and Youngest Daughters are both likeable enough, but the Eldest has a rebellious spirit which may bode well with a lot of people.

The Father is the controlling, dominating one in this film which could cause a lot of people to see him as a bad person (certain words like ‘crazy’, ‘lunatic’, and ‘on crack’ spring to mind). However, while his actions were crazy, to me he seemed like a genuine father who was too overcome by the threat of the outside world and took drastic measures to protect his children. In all honesty, while it’s easy to relate to the children and their plea to get out of their oppressed life, I found it was easier and more interesting to understand and see the love he had for his children. By all means, none of these characters are two-dimensional but the Father was – at least to me – the most intriguing of the bunch. The Mother helped enforce this brainwashing in the household, but she was really a sub-character in a film where the Father’s drive to control his family is truly the leading story.

Visual and Audio

Like the storyline, the visual can be difficult to get accustomed to and is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Dogtooth takes a break from the classic film shots that make up the majority of blockbusters and low-budget films and uses more of an arthouse style of cinematography, which can be a confusing and interesting experience stylistically.

Many shots actually end up having character’s heads cropped out of the frame, and I’ll be absolutely honest again: I’m not sure if this was the right choice from the director Giorgos Lanthimos. I do understand the shocking nature of the content should be accompanied by equally jolting visuals, but it just made the momentum of the film slow down a bit and it really didn’t do Dogtooth any favours. With that being said, there are beautiful shots of the characters and their country estate which provide plenty of eye candy.

The soundtrack features mainly Greek music (it is made by Greeks, after all), but the music really does suit the tone of the film. There’s a lot of guitar with Greek vocals, which almost soften up the edgy content that the film presents. There are plenty of beautiful scores, but the biggest audio narrator in this film was silence. More often than not, the silence is more poignant than any soundtrack could ever be. The film doesn’t make use of too many SFX, and instead relies on the score and the characters to bring together the actions in the film.

DVD Extras

The DVD only comes with deleted scenes, the Dogtooth trailer, as well as the standard Madman trailers. The trailer isn’t really worth watching after you’ve seen the film because it makes the film out to be far more climatic than it really is. The deleted scenes…well, I have to say they were a bit of a disappointment. Most of the scenes involved characters dancing for minutes, and I suppose it really justified why it was deleted. It’s always worth a watch though, but you might end up just fastforwarding through like I did.

Final Comments

Dogtooth is truly a unique film that requires an equally unique attitude to appreciate it. While it’s most definitely not for everyone and it has its minor flaws, overall the film is a powerful and poignant tale that is more about making its audience think, rather than simply telling a story. Dogtooth may not be the funniest film and it certainly won’t “inception” you, but it does hold its own new destination that truly makes it remarkable in its own right.

I give Dogtooth

The 3rd Birthday Review

The 3rd Birthday
Developer:
HexaDrive
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform: PlayStation Portable (Reviewed)
Release Date: March 29th 2011
Price: $29.99 US, £34.99 UK, $69.99 AUS

Overview:
Franchises can do a weird thing when they are left to sit for a long period of time. The Parasite Eve franchise has seen two different entries, but both of these games had a few differences between them as the series evolved into the newly developed survival horror genre which began back in the late 90’s. Now there has been eleven years since the release of the last Parasite Eve game but fans of Aya Brea and the series have finally gotten a third game.

Not everything is as it seems. The only thing signifying The 3rd Birthday is the third entry to the Parasite Eve franchise is the 3 in the title. Many things have been changed in The 3rd Birthday but the well-recognized Aya Brea is still here. Now with changes to nearly every aspect of the game, will The 3rd Birthday live up to the decade long wait?

Story:
The 3rd Birthday starts innocently enough. Snow is falling in New York and it is Christmas Eve 2012 and everyone is enjoying a peaceful winter day. That is of course until a blackout sweeps across the city and leaves citizens stunned as the city around them begins to fall apart. Strange vine like monstrosities begin erupting from the earth and tear apart everything in their path with no reluctance for human life. Buildings crumble, debris falls onto hapless civilians and even the Statue of Liberty becomes home to a city destroying vine.

The vines are something never before seen in the world and the world classifies these plant like organisms as The Babel. The opening cutscene certainly sets the tone for a game where humans are at the mercy from unknown creatures that tear apart a city and the struggle to survive begins. A year has passed since the initial destruction of New York and Aya Brea is the only one who can work to prevent these disasters. Aya is now part of the Counter Twisted Investigation (CTI) and is able to dive into the past through an ability called Overdive. Through this ability she is assigned to dive into specific events in the past and do what she can to change the events in the past and change history.

Now the story itself revolves around lots of time traveling thanks to Aya’s ability and this also means that players are given plenty of information to take in at once. Thankfully the game contains a glossary of information that can be read in case they feel lost to the events occurring. This helps greatly because the storyline is certainly a great aspect of The 3rd Birthday with plenty of plot twists and tense moments.

One thing can leave a sour taste in the mouth of fans of past games however, and that is Aya Brea herself. Due to circumstances you will have to find out for yourself Aya is not who she used to be, losing her memories and it seems her personality. Strong female characters are hard to come by in the video game world and Aya Brea often was seen as one of the pillar examples of a strong female lead. This changes however in The 3rd Birthday as she is often meek and unsure of what she should do when facing a difficult situation. This could easily be attributed to the fact that Aya has lost all memory of who and what she was as memory loss could easily create a personality shift such as we see here. As a whole it still feels like a loss that Aya isn’t quite as we remember her but she still is the only one the world can turn to.

Graphics:
Square Enix has always been a company that you can look to for graphically impressive games and The 3rd Birthday is no exception to this rule. Cut scenes play out with CG movie quality that you will be hard pressed to find on most other PSP titles. These cuts cenes are practically flawless in their presentation and the eye candy doesn’t stop when the cut scene ends.

The characters outside of the cutscenes are also very well detailed and look great on the small screen of the PSP. Aya’s clothing gets torn realistically enough when she takes too much damage or is hit by a powerful attack and she really looks like she is getting hurt from her appearance. The Twisted themselves come in a variety of different forms and, while not really scary, are certainly a sight to behold. The world of 3rd Birthday is just as great to look at as everything else with enough plenty of unique areas for Aya to dive back into despite being centered on an urban setting.

Audio:
Fans of Chuck and Supernatural should hear a few familiar voices because Aya Brea herself is voiced by Yvonne Strahovski, Sarah Walker from Chuck while Kyle Madigan is voiced of Jensen Ackles of Supernatural fame. The voice work by the characters themselves is some of the best you can find but unfortunately the dialogue that they are provided is a bit of a disappointment. This can be attributed to the translation effort from the original Japanese game to English which is depressingly blunt with little nuance.

Gameplay:
The 3rd Birthday plays as an over the shoulder shooter with the player always in control of Aya. Before every mission begins the player has an option of buying various weapons and performing a battle simulation which lets the player figure out the best weapons they want to use. Aya can bring three weapons into battle at a time, though one recommended weapon is her default pistol which, while not as strong as other weapons in the game, has infinite ammo and is certainly a useful piece of equipment in tight situations.

Weapons usually lock on to the closest Twisted when they are aimed and can be switched by pressing left and right on the D-Pad but the camera can often be a hindrance which I will address later. As a whole every weapon is also customizable with various upgrades to increase a weapons statistics which is a necessity as the player comes across stronger and more advanced Twisted as the game goes on.

The Twisted themselves come in many different varieties. There are your standard simple enemies which appear often enough and are easily defeated. But for every common Twisted is a Twisted that has a certain twist to it, or a special skill that makes it extremely difficult to destroy. For example a certain Twisted can paralyze and grab Aya in its claws and can cause imminent death. The catch here is that Aya can then switch to a different body and eliminate the Twisted without any worry of death yet. The boss twisted are of a completely different design however as these bosses often only have a specific weak point that can be attacked but can also deal out near instant kill attacks that Aya must avoid by either dodge rolling out of the way or switching to a body that will not be killed.

Avoiding enemy blows is a key strategy in The 3rd Birthday. Although Aya may be able to avoid death by switching to a different body in the area, these various soldiers can also be hurt on their own. Aya can dodge roll or side step incoming attacks and if timed right can avoid damage. The problem with being damaged is the fact that health regeneration is very slow and only happens when Aya is completely still. This can be done by hiding behind cover but cover can be destroyed in only a few hits so managing your health and the soldiers’ health around you is a must.

I’ve spoken much about the Overdive system that The 3rd Birthday employs and I’m sure you’re curious about it as well. The Overdive system allows Aya to occupy the body of any living soldier in the area around her. Overdive is an essential part of gameplay as some enemies can only be killed by a soldier that is carrying a specific weapon or is inside of a vehicle. Aya can still die and if she does suffer too much damage will end up losing her life. A few key sections of the game will provide Aya with only a few soldiers available to access which places Aya in difficult situations where if she cannot manage to protect the other soldiers and dispatch the Twisted in the area, she will be at their mercy.

Overdive doesn’t only allow you to switch bodies however. If an enemy is attacked repeatedly enough they can be stunned. When they are stunned Aya will have a short period of time where she can dive into the enemy Twisted and deal massive damage which will usually kill weaker foes and hurt stronger ones severely. Using weapons with a high Impact rating will increase the players’ chance to stun an enemy but also deal less damage overall. By aiming at one Twisted for a period of time Aya will link with other soldiers where she can direct them to perform a Crossfire ability where every soldier in range focuses their fire on that specific Twisted, increasing the chance to stun them.

Besides the ability to dive into enemies Aya also has the Liberation ability. Liberation fills up over time as Aya defeats enemies and deals out damage. When the bar is filled up Aya can activate Liberation mode, giving her a drastic increase in power. Aya will be able to warp around the battle field, take significantly less damage from enemy attacks, dual wield pistols that do very high levels of damage and cause the enemy to become stunned quickly and the use of her Overdive Kill does even more damage than before. Liberation can change the tide of nearly any battle but can be difficult to charge and the lack of Overdive in a difficult battle could mean the death of Aya.

Now Aya is able to gain experience as she kills different Twisted but she is also able to obtain something called Over-Energy Chips when she Overdives into friendly soldiers or Overdive Kills Twisted. These chips can then be inserted into a 3×3 grid that represents Aya’s DNA and provide her a variety of different abilities. These abilities range from faster healing, more damage from your weapons, defense increase and more. The chip cannot be removed once it has been inserted into the DNA board but it can link to other abilities of the same type immediately next to it.

The grid system is difficult to learn at first but it is a necessity to master as the skills and buffs provided by the Over-Energy Chips provide lots of help in battle. Two chips of the same type placed next to each other will add their levels together, meaning a level 3 chip will add onto a level 2 chip to make a level 5 skill. Players can also place chips on top of other chips and overwrite the chip in that place. This can cause the level of a skill to increase or decrease while it may also completely mutate the DNA and change the chip entirely. It can be quite confusing at first but mastery will make Aya’s DNA a powerful assistant in battle.

Earlier I mentioned that the camera made fighting some enemies difficult and this is quite true. Being on the PSP it is inherently an issue that without dual analog sticks, camera control is an iffy affair with the D-Pad. This is only made worse when most areas involve enclosed spaces and it will be difficult to see what you are shooting at or what is hitting you at times. The auto-aim feature is helpful in this case but when the player uses a weapon without auto-aim such as a grenade launcher or sniper rifle the aiming is sluggish at best and can often cause the player unnecessary damage.

Overall:
Now The 3rd Birthday may appear a bit odd as a sequel to the Parasite Eve franchise but it can be better seen as a reimaging due to the amount of changes. Aya Brea returns but the gameplay and design are quite different from previous titles. The body switching mechanic is not only interesting in its own right, but is also implemented well. The camera holds back the title and many fans will be upset by the way that Aya has changed and, even though the story is good in its own right, the way it is presented is a bit disappointing. The game has a respectable length to the title for a Shooter-RPG, clocking in at around 12 hours for one playthrough with New Game+ options letting the player start the story again with all of their levels and weaponry intact.

I give The 3rd Birthday

Dungeon Siege III set back a month; releasing in June

Square Enix’s Dungeon Siege 3 was originally set to be released this May but that is not going to be the case anymore. Square Enix stated today that Dungeon Siege 3 will instead be released on June 21st in the U.S. and June 17th in Europe, effectively pushing the release date back a month for both territories.

A statement from President and CEO of Square Enix Mike Fischer stated:

“Although the final polish phase has demanded a bit more time than originally planned. We want to assure fans and followers that the additional effort will allow us to deliver an action-RPG worthy of its rich heritage.”

There was no specific console mentioned in the delay so this means that the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will all release alongside one another. Dungeon Siege III is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and will include much of what fans loved about the dungeon crawling series, including a new magical gun wielding character, knight trained by ninjas and two other playable characters.

345 Games established; to bring Ugly Americans and Deadliest Warrior sequel to XBLA and PSN

MTV Networks Entertainment has established that they will be opening up a brand new development studio and will be calling it 345 Games. This comes after the success of their Deadliest Warrior: The Game which sold quite well across the PSN and XBLM. The studio will focus on creating games from programs that air on Spike TV and Comedy Central.

They also revealed in this announcement that the first two games that they will be working on is a sequel to the successful Deadliest Warrior game, called Deadliest Warrior: Legends. This sequel will pull even more fighters from all periods of time and include twice as many fighting arenas as before. There is a new campaign mode which has not been elaborated upon yet as well as a number of enhancements to the combat, such as a more precise projectile system and more fighting options. Deadliest Warrior: Legends will be released sometime in the middle of July and cost $10 or 800 MSP.

The second game being developed by the newly founded studio is Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon. This makes one game being developed from Spike TV and one from Comedy Central. The game will contain tons of authenticity from the show itself as it will feature the same illustrators from the show, be scripted by the writers of the show and even feature the same voice actors. The story will be told by plenty of cut scenes animated by the original illustrators as well. The game will feature co-op gameplay that will allow players to take advantage of the twin stick shooter style. It will be released in August of this year for $10 or 800 MSP as well.
