Third Blade out now on Apple iPhone

Korean mobile developer Com2Us today released Third Blade, their newest Action RPG available on iOS devices.

Judging from the screenshots, the game looks gorgeous, and seems to feature some classic RPG gameplay. If that’s the kind of thing you’re after for your iPhone or iPad, look no further! With a long line of popular mobile games behind them – RPG and otherwise – Com2Us’ latest release should be a good portable RPG experience.

The company describes the game as follows;

“Wading through a gorgeous but mysterious forest, you start to grow uneasy. As you and your companion go deeper into the woods, you are overwhelmed by an onslaught of monsters, who get progressively more vicious and complicated. But you’ve got tricks of your own up your sleeve: three weapon styles including dual wielding, one-handed blade, and an enormous ‘buster’ sword!”

They also list features such as levelling up skills and weapons through three tiers, performing combos, and fighting various enemies across 28 battlefields. It all sounds like a standard role-playing game. But it looks so damn pretty! With an art style like that, as long as the gameplay is solid, it will resonate with plenty of people.

Try it out if you’re into RPGs, and let us know what you think, and stay tuned for our review.

Mortal Kombat: All Rapped Up!

Its fairly obvious: Mortal Kombat is pretty much the biggest thing in the video game world right now, right up there with the new Nintendo 3DS. The new game is insanely popular at the moment, a new web series based off the game debuted with 5 million viewers, and now this new rap song by Jace Hall is taking the internet by storm, collectively with over 65, 000 views on youtube in less than a week!

From Jace Hall, the man behind the popular ‘I Play WoW’ song, the ‘Mortal Kombat Rap’ makes a lot of references to the Mortal Kombat universe, the gaming community, as well as popular songs through hip hop history, including iconic rappers such as Eminem, Nelly and even Vanilla Ice. Paying even more video game homage to the franchise, the beat that is rapped over is a remix of “Techno Syndrome” by The Immortals, the popular Mortal Kombat theme song taken from the 1995 & 1997 Hollywood live action films based on the series. If your a fan of Mortal Kombat, definitely check this out if you havn’t already, it certainly gets you in the mood to crush skulls and decapitate fiends! You can download the song for free here, and check the music video below!

NBA Jam Available on iOS

iOS and Android have proved to be valuable platforms for replaying classic games you can’t play without owning the original consoles.

EA have revived the classic arcade game, NBA Jam, available in the iTunes App Store from today.

The game has received a graphical facelift from the pixely look of the ’90s, but still maintains the playful visual style. The original voiceover announcer, Tim Kitzrow, returns with his classic lines, plus a few new ones.

Long-retired players of the actual NBA also return, including Scottie Pippin, Dennis Rodman, Dr. J, Scott Skiles, Karl Malone, Detlef Schrempf, and Danny Manning. None of these names ring any bells for me, but if they get you all nostalgically excited, then you’d probably want to snap this one up. In addition, the iOS version has some new players to unlock as well.

There are two control schemes, and three play modes to try out. The meat of the game will be the classic Campaign, where you play through a season, defeating all the other teams, and unlock players and cheats. As the game is on a portable system, there’s also a Play Now mode, where you simply select a team and jump straight into a match – perfect for smaller, bus-ride-length sessions. Or you can play against a friend, in local multiplayer via Wifi or Bluetooth.

Whether you remember the original in the arcades and home console ports of the mid-nineties, or are just looking for a solid basketball game for your iOS device, EA’s handling of an old Midway IP should satisfy.

New trailer for Inversion released

It seems Saber Interactive love playing with limitations of time and space, and their next game is no exception. Saber Interactive have released a new trailer for their upcoming title, Inversion, due to be released in 2012.

Inversion is a third-person shooter where players will actually have control over gravity itself. Brought to you by the same people that developed Timeshift, this new title promises to bring an interesting element to gameplay not often seen in standard shooters. The trailer itself showcases a mindbending visual of how a world without gravity works, and throws beautiful graphics in the equation as well.

Inversion will be available on the 10th of February, 2012 for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Check out the official Inversion site here, or take a peek at the trailer down below.

Otomedius Excellent given some details from Konami

There are some games that are released in Japan that you know will be localized eventually. Popular RPG franchises, sequels to successful franchises, etc. But then there are games that you are surprised to hear are coming out of Japan and onto Western shores. One such pleasant surprise is Otomedius Excellent from Konami. Konami America has released some details about their to be localized eventually shoot’em up.

Otomedius Excellent will be a bullet hell styled game with 2D side scrolling action where players will play as nine different anime styled characters that will play through brilliantly drawn graphical environments. Players can team up with two friends at home or on Xbox Live and if you want to you can always take a look at any pictures you have unlocked in the gallery mode.

One thing that is interesting to note is that the title is being released to retail for an unnanounced price. This move may appear a bit surprising to some but it has been done before. Deathsmiles from Aksys games was released to American audiences last year and was also a shoot’em up style game so perhaps Konami believes that Otomedius Excellent will pull in those same fans as well as even more.

A pair of Mass Effect 3 screenshots to take a look at

No your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. Game Informer has been given two exclusive screenshots for Mass Effect 3 and has placed them online for the world to see. The two screenshots can be seen both above and below and show Cerberus forces fighting against Shephard on the Salarian homeworld known as Sur’Kesh. This is the first time we have seen the Salarian homeworld in actual gameplay so a new planet will be available this time around.

The Cerberus Network seems to be attacking this Salarian city but exactly why they are there is anyone’s guess. Currently no other information was released so take a quick gander at these screenshots and contemplate just what else they have added into Mass Effect 3.

Politician calls for 18+ ratings; would it work?

In a bid to push for an 18+ rating for video games in Australia, Federal Minister for Home Affairs Brendan OConnor has compiled a table of games comparing their ratings across various countries. Many games on the list such as Borderlands, Bulletstorm, Duke Nukem Forever and WET to name just a few, were rated M15+ in Australia while being adults only (17-18+) across Europe, US, Canada and NZ. In what I could only assume would be pressure from gaming companies and the massive profits that would be lost if the Australian market was excluded, these games are being pushed into the wrong categories and into the hands of many impressionable kids around the country. Don’t get me wrong I actually haven’t got any issues with a 15 or 16 year old kid playing whatever games they want but it’s a little bit out of hand when 5 years olds play war games or get that demonic look on their face while taking out pedestrians in GTA.

OConnor believes that “If the new category is introduced, it could result in computer games that are currently classified M15+ being re-classified R18+, providing a new level of protection for children”. While I do believe that passing a law such as this is a step forward for the gaming community I think its goals as set out by O’Connor will fail. My argument is that Mr OConnor is basing his argument on the fact that introducing these new laws will keep these games out of the hands of young children and it won’t. Laws are already in place to keep children under 15 from buying these games but does this stop them, no it doesn’t. The only thing that will stop children of a young age from playing violent and disturbing video games is their parents awareness or concern for what their kids are doing.

What an R18+ category will provide is a means for parents who do monitor their childrens gaming activities to be better informed of the games content. As a parent you may deem a game labelled M15+ as suitable for your 14 year old son but would not consider looking at the R18+ range. Currently parents are being slightly misguided due to the massive inconsistency and variation of games all lumped together under the M15+ rating. Interestingly OConnor notes that games that are currently deemed unclassifiable such as Mortal Kombat will remain so under the new laws, as many parents were worried that new R18+ laws would see the introduction of even more raunchy titles.  Without starting a debate, surely if there was an R18+ rating in place then games like Mortal Kombat could be reintroduced for sale to their intended audience with fines in place for retailers caught selling it to children. Sure they could buy it over the internet, but they already can as the PS3 is a multi-region machine and there’s a multitude of websites just eager to supply desperate gamers with a copy when the legitimate stores cant.

While it may seem a step in the right direction, and I do agree with keeping certain games away from kids I really don’t think it will keep the games out of the hands of those who want to play them. Kids these days have seen pretty much everything from Sly Stallone wasting over 200 enemies in his last Rambo film to Sub Zero ripping out a spine in the original Mortal Kombat (which I remember the hoard of schoolkids waiting to play at the local milkbar).  And with his statement regarding currently unclassifiable titles it doesn’t even look as though it will benefit adult gamers and give them access to these previously unplayable titles. F any of this was going to work there would need to be a universal ratings system that correlated closely with movie ratings. There’s no point banning a violent video game but allowing an equally violent movie to be available at the cinemas.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy, the online web series debuted on youtube last Tuesday, and since it has collectively received over 5 million views on youtube. The series has been praised by many as a glorious return to the series’ mature presentation, and has given the Mortal Kombat a more realistic approach to the characters, changing many aspects of the storyline, but fans reception so far seems like they don’t seem so mind much, many actually embracing it. It is an anthology of nine live action episodes and sheds light on the motivation behind each character’s participation in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

“Kevin Tancharoen delivered an amazing production that millions of fans around the world are enjoying,” said Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.  “We couldn’t be more pleased with the reception it’s received.  This is truly a testament to the quality of the series and the ongoing popularity of the Mortal Kombat characters and franchise.”

The high anticipated first episode of the series entitled “Jax, Sonya and Kano Part 1” debuted on April 12 exclusively on Machinima’s YouTube channel, and can be viewed here.
