Malevolence: Sword of Ahkranox Preview

malevolence

Malevolence: Sword of Ahkranox is a rather unique feeling, looking and playing game in todays gaming environment. The team behind the title have taken the conventions of much older open world RPGs, like The Elder Scrolls and Might and Magic, and applied them to a more modern title. Add a little bit of what I’m pretty sure is procedural generation and you’ve got yourself a pretty accurate basic idea of Malevolence: Sword of Ahkranox.

So right when you start the game, before you even launch it, I’d suggest changing all of the games settings to suit your setup. For me, this meant that enabling widescreen mode and enabling 32 bit graphics was a must. There are also other settings like game detail and bloom density. I’d really suggest finding a spot that looks best for your machine. While the game isn’t exactly graphically intense, some settings may look and run better on certain types of setups.

Okay, so you’ve done some config and now it’s time to actually play the game. You’ll find that by clicking on the new game button on the in game menu, you’ll be taken to a character generation page. Once again, this is very reminiscent of classic games where you would choose a portrait and a voice packet that suits you and then go on to name your character. From what I can tell, there is very little impact (if any) of different selections on the gameplay of the game.

As the game begins, you’re taken through a FMV cutscene that tells you a little bit about the lore of the world and your place within it. Apparently there are these beings that are born every few generations that can wield the Sword of Archanox or something. These beings (from what I can tell) are generated as full adult humans within this temple location. However, something goes wrong during your generation into the world and you are instead brought to life in a city somewhere. With guards chasing you, you run off and a mage helps you out by throwing you into a portal leading you to the middle of nowhere. That ends the cutscene and begins your game.

You’re dumped into a world consistently filled with next to nothing. The most you’ll see right at the start of the game is some trees, grass, rocks and maybe a hill or two. It quickly becomes evident that you must adventure out to try and find -anything- really. And, well, there are things to find in this game. They just feel like they’re really spaced apart.

Movement in this game is a little strange at first. Imagine that you are on a grid and that you can only move in one arbitrary direction at any one time. This is how the movement in Ahkranox is played out. While it is kind of strange to have this movement scheme in the open world, it makes sense once you head into dungeons.

I remember heading west for like 30 minutes before I ran into some kind of abandoned household. Could I enter it? There wasn’t a door and random spam clicking lead me nowhere. So I left that area and headed north. I passed a few similar locations, but one was covered in jars. It was here that I found some loot. There were also some abandoned camps and camp fires that could be looted for gold and other valuables. However, despite looting a bunch of locations and travelling for well over an hour, I had yet to reach any kind of civilisation or anything remotely like a dungeon.

Just I was about to give into despair and boredom, I encountered a graveyard. It should be noted that during this journey, I had mastered the local map. I still have no idea how the other two work. Anyway, there was this graveyard and it had a crypt or a mausoleum in it. There would definitely have had to have been a dungeon here, right?

Well yes, there was! And even better, it seemed pretty well tuned to my skill level. What was odd though, was that the entrance to the crypt was a solid wall on the side of the object. Quite strange. So I headed down into the crypt and engaged in combat with some foes. One of which dropped a cool helmet. I immediately equipped it.

What’s interesting about the inventory is that it hugely resembles the inventory systems found in classic RPGs. You’ve got the generic looking figure on the left screen and the inventory on the right. The more things you have equipped, the more things just kind of glue themselves to the figure.

Combat in Malevolence: Sword of Archanox is a little strange. If I had to liken it to anything, it’d be turn based combat. What’s odd about the game is that when a monster is near you you’ll notice that your movements become a little more jerky. This is because the game is taking this split-second to move the monster unit in your direction. However, the monster can only move after you’ve had your movement turn, so as long as you don’t head towards it or box yourself in, you may never actually fight that monster.

malevolence-sword-of-ahkranox-002

The one thing I can’t quite work out about the combat is the mechanics. I’m not entirely sure if I should be clicking on an enemy once per combat turn or if I should be spamming the attack button or if I should be timing the attacks to the enemies. In my experience by spam clicking, sometimes you’ll hit the enemy and sometimes someone will parry someone.

Over the course of my journey, I encountered many abandoned households, many abandoned camps and many dungeons. Some of these were above my skills, some below, but I never once encountered another living soul. Are there other people living in the world of Ahkranox? If my journey is to support me, no, no there is not (I’d also like to suggest here listening to the wizard dude at the start). But then, why have the player finding gold? Surely there’d be vendors somewhere? Maybe I was just traveling in the wrong direction? Let’s hope that your journey will be a kinder one.

Overall Malevolence: Sword of Ahkranox is shaping up to be a great game. Fans of classic RPGs and players that love adventure will find this game pretty intriguing. I know I did.

Rage of Bahamut Turns 1 Today

rage-of-bahamut-logo

The most popular card game on portable devices, Rage of Bahamut, celebrates its first birthday today. It has been a massive year for the Rage of Bahamut team as the game currently boasts over 3 million or so players with hundreds of thousands of players logged in at any one time.

To celebrate the titles birthday, the Rage of Bahamut team are giving away free card packs to all players. It’s a bit hard to find, but in the Home menu, there is a yellow link leading you to the Card Pack page and from there you can obtain this free 3000 Mobacoin pack containing: 10 Rare or higher cards, Holy Powders, Cure Waters and Goblin Powders. It also includes 30 Bazaar points, so that you can sell off or buy additional cards to other players.

Rage of Bahamut is a free game on the Google Play and iOS stores. It is supported by completely unnecessary, but game enhancing, micro-transactions. I have yet to spend a single dollar on the game and am currently ranked ~22k in the Battle Rankings.

Sony stock nose dives following PlayStation 4 reveal

sony-stock-drops
Following Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal (or lack thereof) at the PlayStation Meeting 2013, something quite shocking occurred. Immediately after Sony’s conference, stock in the company took an immense nose dive, not exactly what you would expect following the revelation of the company’s future plans and strategy for the next generation of gaming.

The stock for Sony Corporation closed at -1.23% following an adjusted dip of less than 2%, which is certainly cause for concern for the company. This is definitely not a good sign and is most likely attributed to the hesitance shown on Sony’s part in actually showing the PlayStation 4 console. Instead of showing the console itself, Sony simply opted to save it for E3 2013, a strange decision to say the very least and clearly one that Sony have felt the repercussions of with this news.

What do you think of this shocking news? Was Sony right or wrong in withholding the PlayStation 4 console? Let us know in the comments section below.

guardians-of-middle-earth-snaga-reveal-01

The latest in a long line of downloadable Guardians has surfaced and he’s eager to get in the fight. Snaga the Striker is out looking for blood and with deadly abilities like being able to stun targets and steal their own health, he’ll surely find it. Strikers are light weight but heavy hitters when placed in the right positions and so players will have to be smart just where they employ Snaga’s unique abilities.

Guardians of Middle-Earth is a downloadable title by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Brothers. The game pits teams of five players against one another in epic arena style combat. A very well designed MOBA exclusively on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, players can get their hands on Snaga himself for $2.50 or 160 Microsoft Points respectively (or completely free for holders of the Season Pass). For our own thoughts on the game as a whole feel free to read our review over here.

Capcom Release New Gameplay Trailer For Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

dogma-arisen-01

It has been quite a newsworthy day, but lets remember the generation we are still in for a minute. Right now, one of the finest Action RPGs that consoles have seen is set to release a full on expansion. I am of course talking about Dark Arisen ffor Dragon’s Dogma – and things are shaping up nicely for the add-on as a new trailer has been revealed, showing off some new enemies players will come across in the game.

What does this trailer hold?

Watch as a band of heroes descends into the depths of Bitterblack Isle and encounters the horrors below. After successfully defeating a ferocious Cockatrice, these stalwart warriors will encounter Necrophagous in various forms. Garms, a band of ravenous twisted lupine beasts that spew a blinding fog, descend on the carcass of the Cockatrice and attack the party; an Elder Ogre, a larger and deadlier form of its surface dwelling cousin, squares off with the party in a dark hallway; and most fearsome of all, the Cursed Dragon, twisted into a truly wretched foe by the darkest of magicks, bears down on the group, seeking to devour any flesh it can.

I honestly put off playing Dragon’s Dogma when it originally released as I was too caught up in Skyrim. When you put the two side by side however, Dogma is the true winner as I have recently fallen in love with the game, and this new expanision is looking to tighten my relationship even further. Check out the clip below, and expect to see Dark Arisen on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 23rd.

Bioshock Infinite Goes Gold

bioshock-infinite-screenshot-01

Read up on your warped American History and look out for that Songbird because Bioshock Infinite has officially gone gold! Announced via Irrational Games’ blog, the eagerly awaited next instalment from this award winning series will be coming to a store near you on March the 26th.

Creative Director of the game, Ken Levine spoke of the achievement: “Today, I’m happy to announce that the game has gone gold. What that means is that it has been approved by both Sony and Microsoft (and the PC Gods, natch) to be sent to the manufacturing guys to load up fleets of trucks with BioShock Infinite and be driven to a store near you on March 26th.”

Bioshock Infinite places players in the role of Booker DeWitt, a disgraced former agent who is sent to Columbia to “rescue” Elizabeth and bring her back alive in order to clear his many debts. Things are not always as they seem however and players will be rapidly plunged into a world of chaos, where gamers’ own moral compasses will be broken and you’ll need to figure out just who your friends and enemies really are.

“Nobody has ever built a game quite like this. It’s a shooter, but a shooter that brings you to very uncomfortable and dangerous places. I can’t demand that you play the game; I can promise you, however, that once you have, it will be an experience you won’t soon forget.”

Following similar tones from the previous two games, Bioshock Infinite will allow players to combine guns, a handy gadget called a Sky-Hook and some incredible powers of control, destruction and confusion; adding up to some very fun signature gameplay.

“Who is Booker, and what is the debt that drives him to Columbia? What are Elizabeth’s powers and why has she been locked up since she was a child? Why does Booker have the letters ‘AD’ branded into his right hand? And what, in God’s name, is the Songbird.

Columbia is a city teeming with mystery. I’m glad to say that one mystery is over: On March 26th, you will be able to play BioShock Infinite.”

Fans the world over will be able to get their hands on the game on March 26th, with the title arriving on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

Check it out, would you kindly?
