Greenlight Spotlight: “The Legend” – PC Survival Horror from Elder Productions

The_Legend_Still_04
So Elder Productions have been cooking something up lately that looks… tasty to say the least.  It’s called The Legend and from what I can tell, it’s going to be beautifully terrifying. According to the development team, this free to play first person horror experience uses the latest Crytek engine (CryEngine 3) and, as you can see from the stills, the use of lighting (and the abundant lack of…) appears integral to the creation of the game’s spooky-ass atmosphere.

Although some in the Greenlight community have drawn parallels between The Legend and Slenderman, Elder have stated that the notes featured in the gameplay teasers will not play anywhere as near a central role, nor will the protagonist be as powerless. They’re merely teasing out the info by saying that the protagonist will simply be “more dangerous” and offering us the odd still of a weapon or two amongst the trailers.

From the information given by the development team, it looks as though this will be a mixture of Far Cry, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Doom 3 (notably because of the apparent use of Doom’s infamous ‘you can only equip your flashlight or something else’ item management system) to bring together all of the elements that make horror gamers squeal with that familiar and masochistic combination of terror and joy.

According to Elder Productions, this game will be completely free through Steam and will not require Crysis 2 or any other prerequisite gaming software, and although discussions are going on about Mac OS compatibility for this title, Elder state that although they’re looking into this, it looks unlikely for the time being.

Next Xbox to be unveiled on May 21

new-xbox-reveal

Today it was announced by Microsoft that they will be holding an event in Redmond, Washington on May 21st at 10 AM PDT. The event is called “Xbox A New Generation Unveiled” so it is quite obvious that the company will be revealing their next Xbox console, whatever they decide to call it, at this event.

To go along with this announcement Major Nelson stated that “On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19 days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.”

There have been some disturbing rumors circulating about the next Xbox console, so we will finally learn if any of these are true in a little under a month.

Call of Duty: Ghosts box art and consoles leaked by retailer

call-of-duty-ghosts- (1)Unless someone very skilled with photoshop decided to send the retailer Tesco some fake box arts, it looks like the next Call of Duty game has been leaked out ahead of Activision‘s official announcement.

The box art which can be seen to the right and also below reveals that the new game is called Call of Duty: Ghosts and while this is still a rumor at the moment, the fact that a Target ad also containing the information was discovered points towards legitimacy.

We’ve reached out to Activision for comment but we’ll likely hear of an official announcement sometime within the next few weeks.

XCOM FPS re-reveal to happen this week

The-Bureau-01

Remember that XCOM first person shooter that hasn’t surfaced since E3 2011? Well it looks like 2K Games finally is going to make an announcement regarding that title. According to a blog post on 2K’s website, the re-reveal of the game will be in “only a matter of days” and that it has “undergone an evolution” since the last time we saw it.

To be a bit more specific, the blog post says the following:

“The creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration,” said 2K in a blog post. “2K’s culture allows our studios the freedom to refine their visions, to explore new ideas, and to deliver the best possible experiences for players. Through this exploration, 2K Marin has refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts.”

Square Enix ending digital manga distribution in US and France

square-enix-online-manga

Today some sad news for manga fans has been revealed. The company will be shutting down their digital manga store that allows users in North America and France to purchase a number of manga volumes and read them online. The shut down will occur on May 23rd but the company did state that anyone who has purchased manga will still be able to read it after the service ends, though whether this will remain the case in the future is unknown.

What makes this news all the more unfortunate is that likely a large number of manga fans probably didn’t even know that this service existed. That coupled with the fact that Square Enix recently reported a major loss that saw the company’s CEO Yoichi Wada step down from his position in the company.
