Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey Review

berserk-golden-age-arc-2-battle-for-doldrey
Berserk The Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey
Studio: Studio 4°C
Publisher: Viz Media
Format: Streamed via Neon Alley

Overview:
The Berserk storyline has been going on for quite some time. So long in fact that I was barely born back when the manga first debuted back in 1990. However over its two decade long run it has been quite popular and even received an anime adaptation back in 1997. Now the series is being revisited with a trilogy of films covering the “Golden Age” arc of the manga and while the first movie was already released in North America by Viz, the second movie still won’t be released for quite some time. That is of course, unless you have access to Viz’s Neon Alley service where the second movie, The Battle for Doldrey, debuted this weekend. How does this movie fair? Let’s find out.

Story:
The storyline for Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey picks up shortly after the events of the first movie with Griffith’s words about true friends still resonating in Guts’ mind. However despite those words, Guts remains with the Band of the Hawk and battles alongside Casca and Griffith when they join with the King’s forces to take over the fortress of Doldrey.

In fact, this second movie joins the Band in the middle of a battlefield. However the numerous battles that the Band enters begin to take their toll, not only causing Casca and Guts to temporarily be separated from the rest of the group, but also giving their characters a chance to grow. Despite this growth however, Guts comes to a decision which will see him leaving the Band of the Hawk. When Griffith’s attempt to stop his departure is immediately thwarted, the lives of Casca, Guts, and Griffith take a turn for the worse.

Thanks to the fact that this is only a movie with a standard run time, it is forced to condense a large portion of storyline and character development into less than an hour and a half of run time. This means that even at the best of times, the storyline is compressed to such a degree that outside of the three main characters, Guts, Casca, and Griffith, barely any of the other characters are given much screen time outside of an enemy officer which appears throughout this movie as a recurring enemy for Casca to battle against.

This makes things even worse when you factor in the amount of time on battles and trying to develop these characters in meaningful ways. It also doesn’t help that while Casca does grow as a character in this movie and we begin to see Griffith’s downfall into insanity, everything is cut rather short thanks to the fact that the movie simply runs out of time to portray everything and ultimately ends with a cliffhanger of an ending. The poor pacing becomes one of the biggest issues with the plot despite some decent character growth on the main cast.

Visuals:
Those familiar with the first movie in this trilogy will likely remember how the animation studio chose to implement both 3D CGI elements into action sequences and background scenes alongside standard animation techniques. While some of the fighting choreography is great to look at and many of the deaths portrayed in these battles are very brutal, the basic animation here is the lowest of the low. Not only is the 3D animation disjointed and poorly detailed, it simply pales in comparison to even the most basic fighting animations found in the industry.

Whenever standard animation techniques are used, the movie actually looks pretty decent with a number of outstanding looking backgrounds to go alongside the characters which are usually nicely handled whenever they aren’t presented with 3D models. It is worth noting there is a bit of female nudity here including a few scenes that come close to sex and one full sex scene that doesn’t show off any major full blown nudity but viewers should be prepared for that aspect.

Audio:
Since The Battle for Doldrey was streamed on Neon Alley, the only audio option available was the English dub. This isn’t too much of an issue however thanks to the fact that the English cast is rather decently handled. The main cast of Guts, Griffith and Casca are all voiced well though some of the side-characters are poorly voiced. So much so that whenever a minor character speaks, it only proves how much the series ultimately only focuses on a handful of important characters.

As far as the soundtrack goes, the movie sports a number of nice set-pieces which play alongside the action scenes well though again it is a mixed bag outside of the action, as many of the other tracks are largely forgettable.

Neon Alley:
Now, it has been awhile since I’ve visited the Neon Alley app for watching anime and it appears that not much has changed since my first run with the service at launch. When the movie began I initially chose to watch it on the PlayStation 3, however when doing so I found that the movie often had terrible buffering problems and would suffer from artifacts appearing on screen often.

Because of this, during one of the commercial breaks, I switched to the direct internet connection on the Xbox 360 version of the app and thankfully the movie no longer suffered from these buffering breaks and actually played at a higher resolution since it seems that the quality of the broadcast is determined by the viewer’s internet connection as there is no option to set it yourself.

The aforementioned commercial breaks aren’t much of an issue since thankfully they are always focused on various anime and manga releases and thanks to the fact that the ability to pause or rewind is not available on Neon Alley, these commercial breaks are essential for a quick run away from the television to perform various non-television related activities.

While this may harken back to the days before everyone had DVRs, at least then most television viewers had the ability to record via VHS if they, for whatever reason, had to step away from the television for an extended period of time. While not much of an issue for half hour programming, committing the nearly two hours of time required to watch a full movie on Neon Alley could easily see viewers missing snippets of the movie.

Overall:
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey seems to have a lot going for it at first, unfortunately this potential is squandered. The storyline’s basic principle is sound and the main characters are given some development in this movie and to help all of that, the English dub is nicely handled and many of the action sequences are nicely choreographed. However the rushed storyline creates a disjointed feeling and the simply bad looking 3D CGI is awkwardly used and detracts from how great the normal animation looks. It also is worth noting that thanks to this being the Neon Alley stream; viewers have to also handle the various limitations of the service itself.

Jagged Alliance: Flashback Gameplay Scene Released

jagged-alliance-flashback-logo-001

Danish independent studio Full Control today released a downloadable gameplay scene for their game  Jagged Alliance: Flashback. The scene depicts a combat scenario set in the jungle and ancient ruins of the fictional Caribbean Island of San Christobal, showing the community the look and style of Full Control’s planned reset for the cult turn based franchise. The island will hold many hidden secrets, humorous stories and hostile environments, which makes a perfect setting for a fun and challenging game with lots of  twists and turns. Gameplay features will emphasize the core pillars that made the original games great: deep strategy, thrilling action and character RPG elements.

Jagged-Alliance-Flashback-04

The scene can now be explored and is available for download as PC, Mac and Linux builds via the Jagged Alliance Kickstarter page. It should be noted that Jagged Alliance: Flashback is currently in pre-production and both the style and core features are subject to change. The team has currently raised over $235,890 to successfully reset the franchise, and with a funding goal of $350,000.00, have five days to raise the remaining funds.

“The Jagged Alliance series have always been played out on temperate pacific islands – looking back at Back in Action and Jagged Alliance 2 from an artistic point of view – trife brown colours dominated the landscape,” said Jesper Andersen, Concept Artist at Full Control. “We  have been influenced by games such as Dishonored that oozed dirty, dark and filthy visuals without succumbing to photo realistic textures. With Flashback we want to combine a realistic approach with strong colours to stand out from the masses.”

Jagged-Alliance-Flashback-03

High profile members of the Modding Community already joined the Team to help make the game easier to modify. Chris Camfield, Sir-Tech veteran, also joined the Board of Advisors. Chris has worked on the implementation and design of several Jagged Alliance titles and ended up as lead designer on the unreleased Jagged Alliance 3.

Highlights of Yuko Miyamura Q and A Session

Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-Asuka-01

The Japan Foundation recently housed the Evangelion Exhibition in one of its few showings outside of Japan. Special guest Yuko Miyamura, the seiyuu of Asuka, attended the event, working on a voice acting workshop as well as providing insight into her work on Evangelion via an in depth question and answer session.

Regarding the unstoppable force that is Evangelion, Miyamura explained what the series meant to her.

“So Evangelion has continued for so long and it has become so popular and first of all I want to say that I’m absolutely happy and honoured that its become something like this. I’m happy, absolutely ecstatic to be a part of this. Maybe one reason was that the airing of Evangelion also doubled up with the spread of the internet, so the distance of foreign fans and Japanese fans got so small that it allowed foreign fans to also be a part of this movement, this phenomenon. I thought that was really good timing for the airing of Evangelion. The meaning of this, and I’ve been thinking for a long, long time, being because there are so many fans that love Evangelion, foreign and in Japan, I just began to think that this was a part of a movement to bring the overseas cultures and the Japanese cultures together as one. And I’m part of this? I’m just really happy to be part of this movement.”

Evangelion-Gallery-12

When asked about the mysterious Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, Miyamura gave insight into the man himself, as well as an interesting story from the recording of series.

“If I had to describe him in one word, it would be that he is an otaku. He is known as one of the top four otaku in Japan, but he’s also a very persistent man. He is fairly pragmatic and he won’t stop until he gets what he wants from his actors. That means about twenty-thirty retakes for different scenes in Evangelion. In my opinion, otaku’s are intelligent, very intelligent people and he is also that. Sometimes I think, this guy must be travelling in space. What is he thinking? Sometimes I think that, and you just have to wonder what he’s doing, what he wants. That might be why he’s thought to be pretty mysterious and pretty intelligent but in one word he is just an otaku like us. For example in Death and Rebirth, there is a scene at the end of the movie, I’m sure you all know it, where Shinji strangles Asuka and there’s a little voice I had to act, where she is strangled and trying to breathe. I did thousands of retakes for that, just so many, and I got so confused that I didn’t know what he wanted. What do you want? Do you want me to die? (laughs) So Megumi Ogata, the voice actor for Shinji, decided to do this: “Okay, Miyamu.” that’s my nickname, “Lie down.” So I lie down and she got on top of me and started to strangle me. That was recorded, and that was ok. (laughs)”

Evangelion-Gallery-11

Miyamura also gave her opinion on the news that Anno will be voicing the lead in the newest Studio Ghibli film.

“I’ve never heard of this. (Miyamura claps) As a voice actor it doesn’t really matter what your voice is like, so long as your voice is fit for the character you’re acting out. So if his voice will fit well with the character he is voicing then it’s good, it’s fine. However, I hope he goes through a lot of troubles (laughs) and I hope he has to sit through a lot of retakes (laughs) and has to agonise himself in the process of thinking “What does the director want out of me? (laughs) Not only that, I would like to see him go through this. (laughs, claps, cheering)”

One fan asked Miyamura, in a somewhat roundabout way, about any changes that may have happened during the production of Evangelion Kyu and she provided answers for all interpretations of the question.

“Kyu, the movie itself is unlike the TV series, it’s unlike any of the movies, it’s unlike any of the newer movies. It will be a completely different thing and because it hasn’t aired out properly in English, I can’t really speak much about it. But if that’s the sort of change you are thinking of then it’s a big change. The script changes all the time, it basically just doesn’t exist, so that’s normal. I don’t think there were any drastic changes to the whole production, her character or anything like that. Jo, Ha and Kyu, the three movies, were actually supposed to finish with just three movies but in the process of making Kyu, the director was like “This really long. We need another movie after this.” (laughs) So I guess thats another change that happened during Kyu, a big one I guess. “Oh we’ll just make another movie, nothing big” (laughs) But I’m convinced, well at least I assume and I hope, that in the director’s mind, his spacious mind from time and space, that there is something in there. That he knows that the ending is like this and that he will direct the movie like this and there will be one direction and one ending. Let’s go right towards that. I think. (laughs) But other than that there have been no big, drastic changes.”

Evangelion-Gallery-09

Miyamura also weighed in on the heated topic of subbed versus dubbed anime, keeping the issue burning with questions of her own.

“Yeah, that’s actually a very good question and it’s a question that I would actually want to ask all of you. I usually watch anime with Japanese voices and English subtitles and I feel a lot of the time that the subtitles are short and most of the time can be pretty wrong. This is because it’s very difficult because subtitles have a limited word count to convey a lot of information so I know its difficult. So I am actually wondering, it is actually a mystery to me, if the sensitive Japanese nuances are conveyed to the audience by this short sentence. I actually want to know that. I actually have a daughter who’s now eight years old and she watches anime in English and Japanese and sometimes I want to know which is actually better for her, because she currently can understand some level of Japanese and English, which one she feels more comfortable with listening to. But it seems like she forgets which language she was actually listening to after she’s watched something. She’ll still remember the anime itself, so it’s not really the language itself as it is, she doesn’t remember it word for word or as a language, she remembers the feeling that she’s left with after watching anime. We all know how this feels. So while language is also important I don’t think it’s the most important thing when you’re watching an anime. It’s just a question that is something I want to personally know and ask all of you here today.”

Laike’s PC Download Deals 5/17/2013

dark-souls-amazon-saleThis week’s Deal of the Week goes to Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for $7.49 USD on Amazon.com. This game is part of the Amazon MAYhem sale and is the cheapest price so far for the game.

Dark Souls is hailed to be one of the best games released and famous for being hellishly difficult. The PC edition is plagued with problems relating to the terrible hack port job, locking the game at 720 resolution and 30fps. Thankfully, modders have come to the rescue! DSfix provides a variety of changes to improve the game, including allowing the game to render at 1080 and adding different ambient occlusion algorithms. Be sure to check out our review of Dark Souls if you need convincing.
