Resident Evil Revelations
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platform: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), Playstation 3, Wii U
Release Date: May 20, 2013
Price: $49.99

Overview
Resident Evil 6 was one of those games that you either loved (like we did), or hated. The lack of horror caused a great divide between the monstrous fanbase, leading to a lot of talk about what the series should do next, and just where the franchise should go. Resident Evil Revelations, which launched months before on the 3DS was actually the most loved title the namesake had seen since the likes of the fourth installment, and that was coming from a portable entry. Capcom are ready to capitalize on that and halt the negative chatter by releasing Revelations on consoles. Sure, the graphics getting an upgrade are a sure thing, but can a portable title make the transition to bigger screens and still be great? Let’s find out.

Story
Now, a good part of you have already seen this plot aboard the S.S. Zenobia and beyond unfold already on the 3DS version, so I will save you from a good portion of the details you can read in that review. I want to take a second to speak about how this plot plays out on consoles. As a brief reminder, this narrative places Jill and her partner Parker on a hunt for Chris and his temporary sidekick Jessica as they try to find answers about the lost city of Terragrigia. The plot is no different and plays out in the same, episodic fashion, leaving little to the imagination with a good number of cutscenes and journals laying about to give the player a clear and vivid perspective of the situation.

resident-evil-revelations-360-screen-04

Yes, I still find this plot to be one of the most enjoyable to date, and yes, any fan new or old will be able to jump in and follow the events as they unfold, but the transition of the plot comes off as a bit odd due to the portable nature of the original compared to this console counterpart. You see, Revelations was made for the 3DS – and that means that the intended audience were those on-the-go type gamers who want to play in bursts rather than soak in hours behind a television. A good portion of recent titles in the franchise feature episodic tales, but Revelations in particular feels slightly (and I do mean slightly) out of place due to the way each chapter is broken up into smaller chunks for quicker consumption. This is not a problem really, but load screens are – and having to wait behind a good number of loading screens that take you away from the experience just to see a ten second cutscene can be a tad irratating to those who just want things to play out more streamlined. Of course this is an epic adventure into the dark and the atmosphere still sets that tone of unease, but expect to be interrupted from time to time as you engross yourself into one of the most fascinating stories to date.

Gameplay
It was hard to believe that I was playing such a sharply made Resident Evil on a handheld last year, but considering how much legwork has became involved with the latter entries, Revelations has a lot to live up to as a port. It mostly pulls things off effortlessly, bringing back that over the shoulder third-person perspective to a much broader crowd of fans. Also like the original, each character plays nearly the same, featuring their own unique arsenal, with plenty of pick-ups of ammunition and herbs to be found to make the journey bearable. Being that we are not on the 3DS anymore, players are going to notice that the controls have been remapped and tweaked a bit to provide the same kind of experience on a normal controller. Players can scroll through weapons and grenades by utilizing the d-pad, with the face buttons being utilized for item usage, melees, and event triggers (or the action button for the old-school folk).

resident-evil-revelations-360-screen-01

It wouldn’t seem like a difficult change to make to bring the experience to a controller, but the lack of a touch-screen takes a bit of the clever design away from the game. Before, we were able to access and change up our inventory at the touch of a button, or solve puzzles by tracing fuses with the stylus. Now we have everything handled with the control stick or the face/shoulder buttons, and while this does help give the game the appeal of the classics, it does not feel as imaginative or quite as fluid as it did on the 3DS. Dodging for example requires the player to time their dodge in the direction of the attack with the A button. Yeah, it works – but you are almost guaranteed to botch it a few times as nailing the timing with the stick on the controller without a prompt amps up the difficulty when it comes to dealing with precise movement. The map is now featured on the main screen, and can be accessed in full from the in-game menu. I remember enjoying my map being located on the bottom screen of my 3DS, but the ease of exploration is just as great within this console version, as players have full control of their map and can spin it around at any angle to figure out where they need to go next.

resident-evil-revelations-360-screen-03

Luckily, even though the controls feel a little less clever this time around, the game still plays wonderfully. Revelations has some well placed enemies to ensure there are a good number of scares for the player, and the emphasis on ammo preservation runs high to give the player a sense of tension. The Genesis Scanner is now easier to use with the controller as well, so finding more ammo and secrets come with less stopping, letting the player take in their surroundings in full as they explore the icy depths or dark hallways of the Zenobia. Those who want more replay out of the main campaign will also be happy to know that a harder difficulty has been added known as Infernal Mode, which replaces enemies and items to provide a more random session.

resident-evil-revelations-360-screen-02

In my opinion, due to the now discounted price of Revelations on the 3DS alone – I would say that the main reason to buy the console port aside from not owning the first platform would be just to experience Raid Mode. Just like the original, the concept is to simply stay alive – alone or with a friend, while waves of enemies pop in. The console version ups the ante by adding in Rachel and Hunk as playable characters, more outfits, weaponry, enemies, and other small features, making the mode feel more fleshed out and enjoyable. I will even go out of my way to say that the “horror aspect” of the franchise that fans have been complaining about with titles like Resident Evil 6 makes a better comeback in just this mode than an any console styled Resident Evil game we have seen in years. Imagine you are struggling for bullets, you have low HP, and herbs are not even an option anymore. That fear of more enemies appearing creates an amazingly intense atmosphere, and drives home the survival horror that Resident Evil is all about.

Visuals and Audio
This is going to be the main reason most will want to upgrade from their portable versions of Revelations, and by “this”, I am talking about the graphics. The models themselves look fantastic, showing a ton of detail down to the threads on our heroes’ attires, and the effects such as water and blood seem up to par with what we see on current generation platforms, so they come as a pass. The enemies don’t look nearly as polished, but are still rather menacing enough as well. Oddly enough, it was the framerate that caused the most problem during my hefty time with the game. While Revelations is a port of a portable game, there really shouldn’t be much of an excuse to have the game chug while trying to load the next area as the visuals – while decent, are not as demanding and should have been able to render without seeing load screens or framerate drops. The bonus costumes for the characters however are sweet icing on the cake of Raid Mode, giving a ton of incentive to keep the game in your console for hours on end.

resident-evil-revelations-360-screen-05

There isn’t a lot to say about the audio, honestly. The 3DS version seen fantastic voice acting from the cast we have grown accustomed to over the years and a haunting atmosphere due to the creaky doors and knobs on the Zenobia, and that has come over perfectly to the console version. I still find Keith and Quint to be utterly annoying, but the soundtrack is still sets the player up for a thrill-ride, and personally, that is all that matters when it comes to the sound in any survival horror game.

Overall
Resident Evil Revelations isn’t as good as the 3DS version, but don’t think for a second that it’s existence doesn’t matter. Every single Resident Evil Capcom have delivered this generation have been either highly praised or criticized by the hardcore fan-base that have been with the series from the start, and this release brings in a balance by delivering a fine dose of much needed horror and tension to consoles yet again. In ten years time, Revelations is going to be looked at as that hidden gem in the series that everyone fondly remembered for taking us back to when creaky doors and empty rooms left us uneasy, and the action you experienced was done at your own will. That is why I recommend this port to anyone looking to restore their faith in this classic franchise, as unless you already played enough of the 3DS version – this is one upgrade that is worth the investment.

‘Shadow Warrior’ Reboot Announced for PC and Next-Gen Consoles

shadow-warrior-announced-04

Independent developer Flying Wild Hog (Hard Reset) and publisher Devolver Digital (Serious Sam 3: BFE) have announced a re-imagined Shadow Warrior for the PC, PS4 and the next Xbox. Apparently “health pick-ups, no weapon limit, ridiculous one liners, unlimited shurikens, and more Wang than you can handle” have been confirmed.

Shadow Warrior was a 1997 first-person shooter by 3D Realms that mixed combat with guns, blades and magic. Zilla Enterprise’s corporate shogun is ordered by his employer to find a legendary blade called the Nobitsura Kage which is connected to ancient gods from another realm. The player must discover the truth while pushing back a demonic invasion.

The new Shadow Warrior is launching on PC via Steam and other digital download services this fall (spring for us Aussies) with a next-gen console release set to follow in 2014.

Chakra the Invincible – India’s First Superhero

Chakra-The-Invincible-02

At this year’s Free Comic Book Day event I managed to stumble upon an upcoming series that is the newest brainchild of a certain infamous comic-book genius. Stan Lee the acclaimed creator of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and the Avengers  seems to be now more than ever working on all cylinders. after coming up with Verticus for iOS and his cameo appearance in the Amazing Spider-Man Video Game, Stan is back to what he does best: writing stories, creating heroes and the worlds they protect. Now, we are privileged to meet his newest hero: Chakra the Invincible.

The story centers around 14 year old Raju Raj, a technological genius, who since the death of his parents lives with his older brother in Mumbai. Raju in his determination to unlock the secrets of human potential, develops a special suit that activates the mystical yoga-like powers of chakra  in his body giving him him a variety of special abilities. Whenever he is called upon to help those in need, Raju transforms into Chakra the Invincible. For you anime-fans out there, Chakra is kind of a combination between Goku and Naruto – he can fly, shoot energy blasts from his hands, enhance his own strength, and even generate force-fields to protect himself and others.

The series is a joint effort by Lee’s own POW! Entertainment and Indian comic book distributor Graphic India. Unlike the majority of Stan the Man’s library of creations, Chakra the Invincible isn’t aimed at a western audience and instead is targeted towards young readers in India. Don’t be alarmed however, despite GI being an Indian Company producing a book targeted to an Indian Audience, Chakra the Invincible will still be published in English and available in a comic-book store near you.

Stan Lee, in a conversation with Graphic India, which appears in the Free Comic Book Day preview issue of Chakra the Invincible, stated that his motivation for creating an Indian superhero was that;

The project came about when my good friends at Graphic India, Sharad Devarajan and Gotham Chopra, told me they were establishing a business to create new characters and heroes from India. I thought it would be exciting to work with them, bringing my own style of superhero storytelling to India and collaborating with their amazing artists to develop a brand new Indian Character.

Chakra-The-Invincible-01The company tagline for Graphic India is “The Power of Story” and it looks like Chakra will fit this mold perfectly. In the first issue we see Chakra as an inexperienced superhero, who while being eager to help those in need is also still learning the true extent of his powers and how to properly control them. Like many of Stan Lee’s other heroes, it looks like young Raju will go through a lot of personal development as the story progresses.

The comic is being beautifully drawn in an art style that reflects today’s cartoon animation styles by renowned Indian artist Jeevan Kang (Spider-Man: India). Kang’s simple, beautiful art combined with Graphic India’s strong emphasis on creating fantastic in-depth stories, and Stan Lee’s honed craft of unique superhero storytelling all look like they will meld together in a winning combination.

For those who want to give Chakra the Invincible a look for themselves, Graphic India has made the Free Comic Book Day issue available online to read at their website. While there, be sure to take a look at some of GI’s other franchises such as “Ramayan 3392 AD” and “Devi” that also have free previews available.

Stay tuned to Capsule Computers for more information about Chakra the Invincible as it becomes available, and until then…

Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar Part 2 Review

war-on-geminar-part-2-box-art
Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar Part 2
Studios: AIC, BeSTACK
Publisher: FUNimation
Format: Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack
Release Date: May 21, 2013
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview
If done correctly, slowly building up to a specific event in any story can result in a product that is not only memorable, but truly entertaining. However if this is done incorrectly, it can lead to a slow paced start that has little to no pay off once everything is said and done. With the first half of Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar behind us and the storyline finally about to kick off, does Part 2 contain the pay-off viewers of the series have been waiting for?

Story
As you likely know at this point, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar focuses on the story of Kenshi Masaki, Tenchi’s younger half-brother who has been transported to another world by unknown means. After being tricked into attempting an assassination on the newly crowned princess of the Shtrayu Empire, Lashara, he begins working as her servant.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (1)

While the first half of the series focused on world building, developing relationships and expanding the large roster of characters present in this series, little focus was given to the machinations of the group behind Lashara’s assassination attempt. However in the final episode of Part 1, a strange fortress appears on the outskirts of the Holy Land academy as various male Sacred Mechamasters aligned with the sinister force have begun taking out guards within the academy, limiting their defensive capabilities.

Thus begins the actual story driven half of War on Geminar. It is revealed that the man behind the assassination attempt and now the assault upon the Holy Land is Babalun, the ruler of Lashara’s Shtrayu Empire. As his plans begin to fall into place and the attacks on the Holy Land force the students and female Mechanoid pilots into submission, Kenshi must reveal his true abilities to the students of the school and fight back as a male Sacred Mechamaster piloting the Mechanoid of Light from prophecy.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (2)

However despite his best efforts, Kenshi is only able to hold the attacking forces back long enough for the evacuation of everyone upon the Holy Land, including his allies upon the Swan. When Babalun’s true desire for the Holy Land is revealed, it is up to Kenshi to bring the scattered forces of the various Empires together in order to launch an assault to take back the Holy Land and put a stop to events which will see the entire world fall under the merciless control of Babalun or even worse… be completely destroyed.

Thanks to the fact that part one of War on Geminar focused on explaining the way things work in the world of Geminar, introduced viewers to the main characters and main side-characters and provided multiple explanations for situations which occur in part two, the fact that this second half of the series rushes forward into an action driven plot works quite well.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (3)

There are a handful of events that do sidetrack Kenshi and the group upon the Swan but these are minor and still play a role in gathering the forces of Geminar together under one banner. The various harem antics of the series are overtaken by the main plot but they still exist, but rather than being purely fan-service driven, they instead focus on the emotions of the characters involved, usually regarding how they feel towards Kenshi.

It is interesting to note that while past knowledge of the Tenchi Muyo franchise is not required to enjoy War on Geminar, there are a few questions that the series brings up that those not familiar with the franchise will not recognize. This includes the revelations of Kenshi’s mother’s true identity, his mysterious ability to summon the light hawk wings despite not being of Jerian heritage and the real reason that Kenshi was sent to Geminar in the first place.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (4)

When all is said and done the series does leave viewers with a number of questions left unanswered which unfortunately may not be answered, but thankfully the series does end on a rather high note that is still more than satisfactory despite these unanswered questions. With the nicely developed characters and world from Part 1, an action driven storyline and plenty of information both about the world and Kenshi awaiting viewers in Part 2, as well as plenty of harem comedy and slapstick comedy in both parts, War on Geminar makes itself quite memorable and one that even newcomers should be checking out.

Visuals
One of the biggest highlights of War on Geminar is still the way that the character’s faces react to various situations and portray their emotions, even if many of their reactions are over-exaggerated for comedic effect. While characters aren’t the main focus of this half, their overall designs are still nicely detailed and also quite diverse, even when the female Mechamasters’ outfits are designed with fan-service in mine.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (5)

This second half of the series focuses more on action than the first half and thankfully the combat is choreographed well, especially whenever Tenchi fights with his unusual fighting style in his white Sacred Mechanoid. It is worth noting that there are a few shortcuts taken in animation quality when the characters fighting are shown, but these action sequences are a nice highlight.

It is worth noting that while fan-service is still evident in part two of the series, it is far less prominent since the obvious harem distractions take a backseat to story development and as mentioned before, any fan-service that is present is presented in a rather simple manner with no actual nudity shown.

Audio
As mentioned before, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar features a large cast of characters, many of which have a lot of speaking roles. In this second half a handful of new characters are introduced and they are voiced as well as the rest of the characters in the series up to this point. Again I must mention that the cast has done an excellent job with these characters as their portrayals match their personalities perfectly.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (6)

The series continues to provide rather basic background music, though a few standard background tracks do become a bit more noticeable in this second half since the storyline decided to pick up. As for the opening and ending themes, they remain the same with “Follow Me” by Sound Around” and “Destino” by Alchemy+ being used respectively. That isn’t much of an issue however as both of these themes are enjoyable to listen to in their own way and are paired with nice visuals.

Extras
With the first half of the series sporting a number of bonus features, some viewers may be concerned that the second half of the release will be rather limited in bonuses. However that is not the case, while there are the same clean opening and ending theme and trailers for FUNi releases there are also a few new Japanese promotional materials such as sneak peeks of episodes 7-13, presale promotional videos, teaser trailers, web trailers and even a Japanese voiced special that focuses on giving viewers a glimpse at the recording of War on Geminar’s radio broadcast.

war-on-geminar-part-2-review- (7)

There is also another episode commentary, this time on the final episode in the series, episode 13. The commentary follows the same theme of the last commentary, with Joel McDonald as the host. He discusses various aspects of the show and the casts’ background history along this long commentary track which is a bit more technical than your average commentary.

Overall
Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar Part 2 capitalizes on the amount time the first half of the series spent character development and world building by taking the cast of characters viewers have been following for some time now and throwing them into an all or nothing battle that will see Kenshi fighting alongside his newfound allies against an organization planning the downfall of the world.

The second half of the series tones it down on fan service and while the animation on the action scenes have a few shortcuts, they are well presented and again the characters are nicely voiced by FUNimation’s English cast. Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar may be a spin-off of the series and focuses on an entirely new cast on a brand new world, however it is also one that both newcomers and longtime fans should not pass up.
