We Gamed Victorious with Alienware’s New Gaming Laptops

“The most powerful 14-inch laptop available today”

A couple of our editors received the opportunity to attend the Alienware launch party for their new line of gaming laptops, just last night. The Alienware 14Alienware 17 and Alienware 18 (number specifies inches…no more M17x, etc.) were first revealed at E3 2013 and are now available for purchase from the Dell Alienware online store.

The Alienware 18

Minutes after arriving at the event, a brief presentation was given on the brand of Alienware, its place in the market and of course, the new gear. Something to note is how well the brand has expanded, across Australia specifically, since coming under the Dell banner. Through sales and research data, it is approximated that Alienware own 45% of the Australian gaming laptop market share; we simply say approximated because, as was admitted during the speech, it’s very hard to define the market in these terms when laptops are multi-purpose devices. They are gaming laptops, but that’s obviously not all they do. Still a very impressive number.

We were then able to take a closer look at the 3 beasts. Alienware has always had that unique and iconic chassis design, but this magnesium alloy-framed redesign is sleeker and sexier. The former was bulkier and less stylish to say the least. That’s not to say these models are thin or light as air; a lot of power has been packed into these machines, and the design needs to compensate for that. For full specs, visit the reveal article linked above and click through to the Alienware website within if you’d like further information. In basic terms, let’s just say that they are true powerhouses. We got to see this first-hand with an unreleased title – now we’ve got your attention.

Ubisoft was generous enough to offer two pre-release Splinter Cell: Blacklist codes for the occasion, and we got to play the game ahead of its August 22nd release date. One was running on the 17, the other on the 18. Now, we can’t  give details on the game itself (not yet anyway), except to say that if you loved the last entry in the series, you’ll definitely enjoy Blacklist. What we can go into is the experience of playing it on these brand-spanking new laptops. Visually, we set everything we could to its highest settings and it looked superb – with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 7 series graphics card, we shouldn’t be surprised.

The Alienware 17

Not once did it stutter or falter, and no loud fan noises could be heard – something the Alienware engineers have worked hard on eliminating whilst still providing highly efficient cooling. The full 1080p Anti-Glare 300 Nit Display also impressed; I’ve rarely seen such an effective anti-glare screen before. Something we also noticed were the subtleties of the power button and wi-fi/caps lock indicators; they have been worked into the redesign in a very streamlined fashion. Battery life is our one primary concern, but all in all, we had a great experience trying out these gaming laptops.

We’d just like to thank Alienware for inviting and feeding us – greasy, greasy food…we were extremely careful about not smudging any of the hardware! The crew will be at PAX Aus in July, which is where we hope to see the new Alienware X51 gaming desktop up close and personal. For those who still physically go to the shops (people still do that?!) keep your eye on your local JB Hi-fi as the official retail partner for Alienware; they should be stocking the Alienware 14, 17, 18 and X51 soon enough.

Face Noir Gets English Release Date And Trailer

face-noir-release-trailer

Face Noir is the sort of name you may pass by at first. It sounds almost nonsensical in the English language. It turns out, though, that it makes a pretty sweet point-and-click adventure game. You’ll take on the role of private eye Jack del Nero as he tries to clear his name after being falsely accused of murder.

To date, only folks in Germany and Italy have been able to get their hands on the game, but Phoenix Online Studios (creators of Cognition series) have teamed up with Face Noir‘s developers, Mad Orange, to localize the game into English. The English version of the game will be released worldwide on July 18 as a PC download.

When the game comes out, it will cost $19.99 USD, but you can preorder it right now for $15.99 AND get the MP3 soundtrack as well right here.

Spelunker and more Game Gear titles hit the eShop

spelunker-01

This week, Nintendo have got another little assortment of titles hitting the eShop, both old and new. Sticking with the Game Gear rush we have been seeing as of late for the 3DS, Sega have added in Sonic Labyrinth and Sonic 2 for $4.99, while Crystal Warriors can be swooped up for $3.99.

As for new releases, the 3DS is also seeing some love when it comes to motorbiking, with Urban Trial Freestyle seeing a release at just $5.59 until July 4th. This title includes a track editor, customization, and a lot of other activities to partake in, and it bares a heavy resemblance to a smaller version of Trials.

NES fans will also be happy to know that the classic Spelunker can be purchased for $4.99 on the 3DS Virtual Console service, which was one of the first deep exploration titles to hit the market. This year marks the 30th Anniversary for the favorite, and Tozai Games have stepped in to give their own comment on their title hitting the platform:

“When I served as executive producer on the NES game back in 1985, we had no inkling of how huge the Spelunker phenomenon would become,” says Scott Tsumura, Tozai’s co-founder. “For a character who dies so easily in the game, his notoriety has endured for three decades now, and he continues to gain new fans as Spelunker is released on contemporary platforms.”

Kokuga also comes to us at a price of $14.99, which is a shooter from game studio G.rev, offering a bit of thick strategy and multiplayer antics to get into. Finally, those wanting to take their Wii U out for a night of gambling can pick up Vegas Stakes for $7.99 for the Wii U’s Virtual Console. Keep in mind that a new promotion is offering 20 extra Club Nintendo coins for any Virtual Console title purchased between 6/28 to 6/30.

I am digging these Game Gear titles and the many appearances of Sonic thus far for the most part, and it looks like I may need to expand my memory card as a result. What do you plan on snagging up this week? Leave a comment down below and let us know.

Hotline Miami Review

Hotline Miami
Developer: Dennaton Games
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Platforms: PlayStation 3 (Reviewed), Vita, PC, Mac, Linux
Release Date: June 25, 2013 (PS3, Vita), October 23, 2012 (PC)
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview
If the game weren’t called “Hotline Miami,” “Violence” could have literally been the name of the game. Though it’s been out for other platforms since late 2012, the game makes its gory, stylistic debut onto consoles and handhelds with this release onto the PlayStation 3 and Vita. How does this indie game stand up now that it’s made it to consoles, away from the safety of a mouse and keyboard? Will it clean your clock or should you curb stomp it? Let’s find out.

hotline-miami-screenshots-01

Story
You wake up. You’re unsure of where you’re at. All you know is that the first room you walk into, there are three masked figures watching a glowing television screen. Where were you before this? It’s so hard to recall. The masked figures press you for information, but before you have a chance to recall, it all fades away.

When you wake up, you’re in your apartment. It’s April 3, 1989 and you’re in Miami, the city that keeps the roof blazing. As you stumble around your apartment, you realize there’s a message on your answering machine. You’re given an address, and on your way out the door you grab a rubber mask.

Thus begins the violent, gory story of a man fans have come to know only as “Jacket.”

hotline-miami-screenshots-04

Gameplay
The setup for each mission in Hotline Miami quickly becomes an interesting experience. You wake up in your apartment, stumble around, looking at recent newspaper clippings or what have you, then you check your answering machine. This is where your next mission (hit, assassination, etc.) is given to you, and you’re always told to be discrete.

When you head out, you’ll drive to the location, ending up right outside the front door of the place you’ve got to clear. After choosing the mask you want to wear for the mission (affecting not only your look, but other stats as well), you’ll be free to walk around and scout out the place, since the entire bottom floor is visible to you from outside the house. Once you’ve figured out your plan of attack, you’ll have to go in and execute.

The combat in Hotline Miami is fast and brutal, but it’s also one of the most well executed and satisfying features the game has to offer. Though you generally start with only fisticuffs, once you have a weapon in your hands, a world of possibilities open up to you. Want to try a quieter approach? Kick down the door and knock the first guard to the floor then fling your knife at the second. Want to be a bit louder? No problem, but beware that guards all around will come after you.

hotline-miami-screenshots-05

Stealth can be your friend, especially since you’re so heavily outnumbered throughout the game. The interesting twist is that you have a score throughout the missions, and you’re rewarded much more heavily for being bold in your attempts. Getting newer weapons also hinges on achieving a high score.

Retribution is just as swift coming back at you though. One bullet or lead pipe to the brain basket and you’re back to the last checkpoint. That’s another point where Hotline Miami shines, though. You will die in Hotline Miami…a lot. Much like Super Meat Boy, though, they have you back in the action in the blink of an eye, ready to give it another go. It seems like a small thing, but it keeps the flow and pace of the gameplay in “Go” mode at a much more satisfying clip.

Beyond the delicious, frenetic combat, there is a very dark story being told here. After completing missions, you end up in the same bar, supermarket, etc., that you’ve gone to so many times. You weren’t originally a killer, but you’ve become one and you’re quite efficient at it. Hotline Miami will lead you through a deeply twisted tale that the squeamish should probably avoid. Fans of movies like Drive will soak up every minute of it, though.

The translation of the game from PC to console passed the test with flying colors. Dual joysticks work well for aiming and a helpful targeting system can give you the edge you need in a tight situation.

hotline-miami-screenshots-03

Visuals
Hotline Miami has some fantastic visuals. In going with the top-down 8-bit design, they’ve managed to treat the gameplay a bit more like an old-school game. The styles and colors of the 80’s were all captured beautifully, down the hot pink and neon blue colors, appliances in each place, style of the clothes, and the game’s graphics themselves. It can make the game feel a bit disorienting at first, but once you adjust everything flows beautifully.

The game still manages to evoke a real sense of how sobering Jacket’s life can be. With every kill, blood splatters the floor in gruesome fashion. The masks also add a certain level of uneasiness to the game, helping pull you into this terribly seedy Miami underworld while giving you an alternate persona.

hotline-miami-screenshots-02

Audio
Hotline Miami has one of the best soundtracks for a game of its caliber in years. The game features nearly two dozen tracks that play into everything from setting to situation. For example, M.O.O.N.’s song Hydrogen, played during a particularly intense mission, is like a shot of adrenaline to our chest as its techno bass beats kick into high gear. You’ll be tapping your feet the entire time you’re playing this game…and you’ll probably want to get the soundtrack for yourself regardless. It’s that good.

Overall
Hotline Miami is a fantastic package. If you can get past the gratuitous gore (albeit in 8-bit), there isn’t much here you won’t like. The game’s graphics are stylish and fluid, the soundtrack absolutely sensational, and the combat flows so well, you’ll always be glad for more. Hotline Miami deals with some pretty intense adult themes and material, so you may want to keep it away from the kiddos. Everyone else should go out right now and get this game. It’s arguably one of the best indie games of this generation.

Evangelion and Schick Come Together For Operation: Refresh 10,000

Fresh from the shower and ready for some manscaping...err...umm.
Fresh from the shower and ready for some manscaping…err…umm.

This is a bit of odd news but what makes it truly funny is that we’ve seen stuff like this far too much in the past. We all know the company Schick right? They make razors and shavers and they keep us all, pretty much, hair free. Now we all know what Neon Genesis Evangelion is right? I’m sure if you’re reading this that, yeah, you do. Well Schick Japan has partnered up with the Evangelion movies, once again, for another promotional campaign which will be called “Operation: Refresh 10,000”.

They're so beautiful and clean!
They’re so beautiful and clean!

Basically this promotion is just to show the Schick Hydro 5 which is, supposedly, endorsed by no other than Gendo Ikari. Schick will be giving away 10,000 razors, hence the name, to random winners. The draw begins on Thursday and will run until July 29. Each sample kit will include a Hydro 5 blade holder and three grams of the special shaving gel which I’M going to say is made from 100% LCL.

Go ahead and watch the commercial which is in our Featured Video section below. It is both beautiful and horrific which is actually a lot like the Evangelion franchise itself. Very Interesting.

Don’t forget to hit up our comments section and drop us a line and remember: It doesn’t take an apocalypse-bringing half robot to know when you need a shave so get onto it now!
