Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Box-Set
Author: Hayao Miyazaki
Illustrator: Hayao Miyazaki
Publisher: Viz Media/Madman
Release Date: December 10, 2012
Price: $55.95 – Available Here

Overview
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is arguably one of the most important anime films of all time. It is the film that started it all for legendary anime studio, Studio Ghibli. Nausicaa has gone on the inspire countless anime, manga and all manner of entertainment since its release. But this isn’t about the film, this is about the manga that inspired it.

In 1982, Hayao Miyazaki began drawing the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga series. He mentions in the author’s notes of this deluxe box-set release that he didn’t have much faith in his ability as a mangaka. However after experiencing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, I can say without a shadow of doubt that Miyazaki is a humble man. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is a manga epic.

Story
It goes without saying that Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is unforgettable. It is a tale so immense that Miyazaki himself concludes it by saying that although our journey with Nausicaa is over, there is still so much that will go left untold. It is a benchmark of great story-telling. It is the sense that even though there are no more pages left to turn, the characters and their world lives on, in our hearts and in our minds.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is well known for its epic environmental tale that questions the affects we have on the world around us. Many Studio Ghibli fans in the West are likely to have first acquainted themselves to the film before the manga, despite the manga being released first. There are a number of differences between the two works, some big, some small. But at their core, both works are instilled with a deep-seeded love for the environment and the wonders of the world around us.

It is very clear that Miyazaki has an agenda behind Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and he has a message that he wants to get across. He manages to get that point across without ever being overly preachy and with a deep emotional impact to boot. This may very well be his magnum opus as far as manga goes.

If you are a fan of the film, you will no doubt find yourself salivating over the rich amount of detail and exploration given to the world of Nausicaa and it’s cast of characters. The manga goes deeper than the film ever could, providing greater insight and more colour to the world and characters we have come to love over all these years. This is definitely a must-read for fans of Nausicaa, it is undoubtedly the full-picture that Miyazaki envisioned for this story and one that must be experienced.

nausicaa-boxset-manga-2

Artwork
Miyazaki is nothing if not a beautiful artist. The worlds and character that he imagines are perfectly conveyed through his richly detailed artwork that is both gritty and surreal in its conception. The fantasy world of Nausicaa is fully-realised with every little detail bursting with life. On top of his artwork, Miyazaki has a great sense for framing his scenes, with great panel-work and angles that show definite traces of his work in animation. There is also a real hint of influence from Osamu Tezuka, with a art structure and direction not unlike Tezuka works such as Apollo’s Song.

Extra Content
This deluxe edition box-set release from Madman Entertainment and Viz Media is absolutely remarkable. It comes bundled with a plethora of bonus content, that makes it definitely pack a nice big bang for your buck. The box-set is housed in a lovely hard-cover box, while the books themselves are also hard-covered. Inside each book is a number of colour pages and art from Miyazaki himself that are utterly gorgeous in ever regard. On top of all of that is a lovely double-sided poster that comes inside the box. It is all in all a great package and the greatest release the manga has seen to date.

Overall
What more can be said about Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind that hasn’t been said? The praises of Miyazaki have been sung for decades now and his legacy of work honestly speaks for itself. Nausicaa is a masterpiece in every regard and this is the perfect release for what is one of the greatest manga epics the medium has ever seen.

Miyazaki believes that we are at the starting point of an incomprehensible world. We may not understand it, it may scare us, but in spite of it, we must live. It’s a lovely notion that. If you have never experienced the magic and wonder of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, now is the time. It’s time to let the wind sweep you off your feet and take you on a journey you’ll never forget.

Iron Force Review

Iron Force Review
Developer: Cool Fish Games
Publisher: Chillingo
Platforms: iPhone (Reviewed), iPad,
Release Date: 25/07/2012
Price: FREE – Available Here

Overview

It’s an exciting time for mobile gaming. We’re seeing revolutionary new genres and concepts, hours of gameplay for less than $1, titles with graphics that arguably rival current gen console titles and even smooth online multiplayer. Iron Force is a strong example of online multiplayer done right on iOS. It may not be flawless, but the excitement of virtually murdering a fellow human being can never be replaced and Iron Force captures it perfectly. Even if the game doesn’t interest you, you should still pick it up regardless as it really does showcase the power of current mobile gaming. Oh yeah and it’s free so you have no excuse!

Iron-Force

Gameplay

Iron Force is an online multiplayer tank battling game much in the same vain as World of Tanks. Players duke it out against each other in Tanks, earning experience points along the way to level up and improve their vehicle.  The game runs on the free-to-play concept but before you dismiss it – Iron Force is a game that actually pulls it off well. The way this works is that upgrades can take time to deliver to you, but using in-game currency or in-app purchases you can speed up the process. The same thing applies for fuel which is needed to battle, so players are restricted to how often they can play in a day unless they want to pay. While this is a major obstacle for many free-to-play titles on iOS, Iron Force generally doesn’t make you wait to long – about enough time for a quick Facebook break. Also purchases don’t feel forced and the game encourages you to just grind more instead so it all seems rather fair. Battles earn you two types of currency – a typical money currency and a rarer diamond currency awarded you throughout your battles. Cash can be used to purchase upgrades, while diamonds can be spent to speed things up and if you save for long enough – buy better tanks. On top of this there’s tournaments, leader boards, legions to join and more so it’s safe to say it’s set up well for a strong community to flourish. Every day you log on you get a sweet little gift as well. How thoughtful!

Iron-Force-2

So with all that sorted – how does it feel once you actually get inside the tank? Well sadly, a little slow at first. As you level up however players will definitely feel an immediate increase in both power and fun and it can grow to be a rewarding experience. However this doesn’t kick in until you’ve unlocked a N2O boost for your engine and the aim/scope option for your turret. So while it does kick off to a slow start things do tend to improve after that obstacle. Gameplay can be a little clunky at times but it’s no deal breaker and connections are generally pretty strong. Sure it’s not perfect but about 80-90% of the time you can expect smooth gameplay as you destroy tanks worldwide. The upgrade system is deep but there’s not much strategy involved in combat so generally whoever has the best tank is going to win. The only exception of coarse is power ups which are found on the battlefield which results in a Super Smash Bros type situation where everybody is running for the power up to give them that edge in battle. It gives the game a type of party atmosphere and really makes the game fun. One major flaw of the game however is that once you get a better tank you lose all your upgrades and the game starts to suck again, forcing the player to build their machine again from scratch. It’s worth it but still very annoying.

Iron-Force-4
Audio & Visual

Presentation in Iron Force doesn’t go leaps and bounds to impress you, but what’s present is nice. While graphics are a little blocky some nice attention to detail with textures is good and while maps generally tend to play out the same there is a nice variety in the aesthetics for what’s on offer. Top it all off sound effects get the job done to assist in making the tanks feel like tanks and like all military games you can expect the typical horns, marching drums and motivational “epic” sound. Much like everything else in the presentation it’s pretty much what you’d expect. It doesn’t need or want to blow you away, it’s just there to set the tone and keep you engaged in the atmosphere in which it does so successfully.

Iron-Force-5

Overall

Iron Force isn’t a perfect game – the controls can be a little clunky, the presentation won’t blow you away and it does require a lot of patience. The game is very slow at first, but if you can make it through that players will find a deep upgrade system and that the game is set out and ready to support a very active community. The free-to-play model doesn’t feel forceful with in-app purchasing and for the most part gameplay feel smooth when battling opponents from distant locations. If you’re rocking a mobile device you should definitely consider giving it look as it could be one of the best online multiplayer titles for mobile gaming since Order & Chaos Online. Plus it’s free – so it’s an easy recommend for online multiplayer fanatics.

Slash Only 3 Event Coverage & Cos Play Photos 2013

Slash-Only-3-2013-Beijing-China-002
Slash Only 3 – Beijing China 2013

The third annual Slash Only #3 event too place today in Beijing China! So as always it was another perfect excuse for the Capsule Computers Crew to attend and cover the event.  As always Slash Only #3 event was open to the public with 1000 tickets being sold online and also at the door (after 1pm – only 100 tickets made available).  Ticket prices were set at  40RMB (approx $5USD/AU) per person, so it certainly was a very affordable price if you’re a Dojinshi/comic book fan eager to pick up the latest Dojinshi’s and merchandise from popular TV Shows, Movies and games from the US and UK “Only” Yes you heard that right.  Slash Only, only focuses on US and UK stuff and this time around absolutely NO Japanese Anime, Shows, games or movies were allowed.

Slash-Only-3-2013-Beijing-China-091
Mad Rush to buy Dojinshi was on for young and old!

Slash Only #3 was held at a different venue from the first two events which were at Beijing Workers Indoor Arena, also known as the Beijing Worker’s Gymnasium which hosted the 2008 boxing events for the Summer Olympics. This time Slash Only 3 took place at Beijing Garden of World’s Flowers (an exhibition centre for plants and flowers) The size of the hall was slightly larger than Beijing Workers Indoor Arena but still much smaller than other Dojinshi conventions we’ve covered in the past. A total of 1000 tickets were made available to the public via online purchasing.  As we’ve come to expect from Slash Only events, the organization was fantastic and the staff were very helpful.  The event started a little earlier than usual due to massive heatwave with temperatures reaching as high as 38 degrees Celsius at 9:30am in the morning so fans were allowed in half an hour earlier. And as always the mad rush to buy thier Doujinshi and merchandise was on for young and old!

Slash-Only-3-2013-Beijing-China-021
A wide variety of Dojinshi merchandise for sale!

What the event organizers also did to entice the fans was offer everyone attending a chance to pick up and collect the Slash Only trading card game cards. (similar to other card games like Magic The Gathering) These cards were not for sale at the beginning of the event, and initially were given away to the fans once they purchased merchandise from any of the vendor booths. However, at the end of day the entire collection comprising of 24 cards went on sale and massive lines were quickly formed and anyone interested in picking up the entire set were able to do so for only 20RMB ($3US/AU). This was certainly a great little incentive cooked up by the organizers (GA EXPO)  for the fans which everyone really enjoyed.

Harley Quinn Cos Play ~ AWESOME!

Today’s event drew an impressive amount of Cos-Play characters dressed up from US and UK TV Shows, Movies and Games. Check out the pictures below in the gallery (we also have a link to our full gallery images hosted on Facebook) a lot of effort and time was certainly spent into some of these outfits which I must say were very interesting and amazingly well designed. All in all Slash Only #3 event was a great day out for the fans with a fun and enjoyable Doujinshi event! Latest Dead Rising 3 screenshots show it can be as wacky as ever

dead-rising-3-july- (5)

Back when Dead Rising 3 was announced to the public, many past fans were concerned about the fact that what was once a colorful, often wacky, game had become something gritty and serious and completely devoid of the charm that the Dead Rising series had.

Well, since that reveal Capcom has been trying to show that Dead Rising 3 is indeed still the same game everyone knows and loves and the latest batch of screenshots of the game continue to prove this point. As you can see below, players can do everything from wear dresses while wearing a Servbot head and placing traffic cones on zombies’ heads, fighting zombies with a beam sword in a suit of armor and even boxing while wearing a bull mascot.

TownCraft Review

TownCraft-Logo

TownCraft
Developer: Flat Earth Games
Publisher: Flat Earth Games
Platforms: iPad
Release Date: 24th July 2013
Price: $5.49 – Available Here

Overview
Welcome to TownCraft. A quaint and casual game for you to relax to. So here you are, smack bang in the middle of two kingdoms with nothing to your name. Gather resources from the world around you and build yourself a town for others to envy. Let the construction begin!

TownCraft-02
I hear Eden Valley is nice. Mind the apples though…

Story
TownCraft doesn’t really have a story, not surprising considering the type of game it is, though it does have some vague details. You are back in the days of olde, making your way in the medieval wilderness. You desire to build a kingdom of your own and elevate it to a status of great revere. To the west lies King Oligarchy, a narcissistic king, and to the east is Queen Omnibus, a warrior who ‘tames’ surrounding kingdoms with her sword. You sit in the middle. Each of the three available maps also contains story elements of their own. Eden’s Valley takes place before the King’s Feast, for which you must help prepare, whilst Lake Placid and Rock and Pool have you fending off impending threats. These scenarios alter the dialogue of the travellers you happen by and change the quests that they present you.

TownCraft-03
Does this seem like a fire hazard to anyone else?

Gameplay
TownCraft has a fairly simple playstyle, especially to those familiar with sim builders. Search the land for material, meet the requirements for building and then…build. To begin with, the game features a tutorial mode that provides a step by step walkthrough for the basic principles of the game. Starting from crafting your very first hatchet, the tutorial progresses into more complex elements, such as gathering the materials for a house. The tutorial is not compulsory, so you can skip straight into the game if you so desire.

Once you feel confident enough in your TownCraft knowledge, you can progress to the game proper and begin your own adventure. Stranded once again in a wilderness, it its up to you to forage and craft without a guide. However, unlike tutorial mode, all building options and menus are available from the outset. As you progress, you gather handy recipes, detailing what components are needed to build an object, in case you ever forget. As your town upgrades, NPCs can be found wandering the main street. These characters engage in general conversation and may pass quests for you to complete, such as gathering twenty pieces of wheat. These characters may also join your young community, setting up shop in…well, your shop. You are then able to purchase their wares in your ever going quest of civilisation.

Following its own style as a true casual game, TownCraft also possesses a cheat option, a fairly rare option in games nowadays. In the pause screen, simply hitting cheat will endow you with a plethora of items, saving you a lot of time and work. If you’d rather build your palace from the get go, one click is all you need. Also included in the pasue menu is the option to spawn the various NPC classes. With these option combined, you can go from a stick to a hustling, bustling city in a manner of minutes.

TownCraft-05
It means timidness. He’s a jerk…and his name is Iceberg.

Visuals and Audio
TownCraft has a very simplistic art style to it. The player character is a chibi, giving the game a cartoonish and casual air. The world itself also gives off a very clean vibe. As the world is divided into square tiles, it appears very organised and, once again, simple. The clean blues and greens create a visually soft world, with even the reds and oranges scattered throughout the map being subdued. The game allows you to truly appreciate the visual, via the menu option that allows you to turn off the menu interface. You are also able to view the area far beyond where you’re character is currently standing, allowing you to simply watch.

The game has a very pleasant and slow paced soundtrack behind it. As you journey through the wilderness, mellow tunes play behind you. Piano, acoustic guitar and flutes are used to create a calm atmosphere. Most notably, the music activates during certain events, such as the flute beginning when day breaks. More often than not though there will be no background music whatsoever.

TownCraft-04
Totally legit. No cheating. Just crafted 411 hatchets by hand…

Overall
TownCraft is casual gaming to the truest extent. No advertisements, no micro-transactions, no “rate this game” pop-ups. Nothing but the game. There is no sense of urgency involved at all, allowing you to play at your own pace. The mechanics are simple and there is a fairly wide variety of objects to gather, mine and build. All in all, TownCraft is a game that lets you sit back, relax and enjoy.

Hakaba Kitaro Review

Hakaba-Kitaro-01

Hakaba Kitaro
Studio: Toei Animation
Publisher: Siren Visual
Format :
DVD
Release Date: 18th July 2013
Price: $49.95 – Available Here

Overview

Myths and legends are always romanticised and there are plenty of series’ that like to center around that idea of demons and ghosts existing, sometimes they just can’t get it right but sometimes that just get it spot on! Let me introduce you to Hakaba Kitaro, this series definitely did it right. It looks old but isn’t, it tells ancient stories but doesn’t feel ancient itself, it just does it right and although the series has been going on for many many years and there has been a whole bunch of reiterations I still feel it stands its ground and is good enough to still be relevant in this day and age.

Hakaba-Kitaro-04

Story

The story of Hakabe Kitaro is one that I really like. Basically it follows the life of a small child named Kitaro who happens to be the last one left in the “Ghost Tribe” which were a race of demon/ghost people who used to live on land but were oppressed by us humans once we had a good enough grasp on science and weaponry. Kitaro’s parents are found by a man who was investigating a strange appearance of a ghost in a hospital, they were eventually found dead and were buried by the man, that’s when Kitaro was born. He crawled out of his mothers grave and the man who had found his parents had a little freak out and, more or less, ditched poor baby Kitaro. Eventually this man raises Kitaro and tries to integrate him into human life but it really doesn’t go to well because the two are not fans of each other but that’s just the way it goes I guess. I found the story to be really good because it was written in such a perfect way. There’s the story that we’re all given, the one about this small ghost-child living in normal society, but it’s all the little stories that make up the big stories that I found made this series great. Another note, before I move on, is that they somehow shift between comedy and just dark situations in a way that you barely realise and even when you do it’s as if it doesn’t matter because they’ve done it so well.

Hakaba-Kitaro-05

Every couple of episodes Kitaro will come across another obstacle to deal with or another person/mythical being to help and it goes on like that for the entirety of the small series (well until the last few episodes, but I don’t want to wreck it for you) yet it doesn’t get old and it doesn’t get boring, instead you’re excited to see the next mythical being that will cause some sort of trouble for Kitaro. The other thing that is great about this series is the very metaphorical look on things, every situation is dealt with in different ways and it makes you really think about which way is the right one. Do we go about things the greedy, human way or do use are bare instincts (like the ghosts/demons) to determine what it is we should do? It’s interesting to see the divide between ways of life. There was an episode where Kitaro wanted more things, material items I’m talking about, yet he had no idea about jobs or money or why humans even want it but throughout the episode, after countless mistakes, he realises that money controls the human and really it’s the only way to survive. The fact that the story forces you to think without exactly telling you what to think is what made this series fantastic.

Hakaba-Kitaro-02

Visuals

When it comes to art style, Hakabe Kitaro really takes the cake. The entire series is dark, both story-wise and aesthetically, I found myself watching the first few episodes entirely in the dark just so I could see the screen clearer. The entire series has this filter over it to make it look like it’s an old film and as if it was shot on some crappy, B-Grade camera and it just outright works to the series’ advantage. It actually felt like the Anime wasn’t an Anime but a Manga that was brought to life, what I’m trying to say is that it was like watching a Manga instead of just watching another Anime. The characters, the scenery, everything just seemed like a “Manga brought to life”. They also managed to put a great deal of colour into seemingly dark scenes, I’m talking light greens and hot pinks in places where those colours should absolutely not be BUT it works, don’t ask me exactly how I just know that I wasn’t annoyed or upset by the contradiction in colour and in my books that’s a good sign. The one thing I didn’t like was the use of CGI in the series, it wasn’t super bad, it just felt out of place in some scenes and I though that it really wasn’t necessary.

Hakaba-Kitaro-03

Audio

I’m going to start on a big note here, this was something they DIDN’T do but I’m really happy about: it was entirely in its original Japanese dub, there was no English dub and I think that was on purpose because there’s no way such an old-school, Japanese style of Anime could’ve been enjoyed in English, not only that but the Japanese voice actors were spot-on with their tones and the voices. The music was extremely traditional and, considering it is set in the 1950s, it fit like a glove. You had the mixing of the traditional Japanese music and a bit of the Western style which is, obviously, symbolic of the change in times. Some of the sounds in the series were fairly haunting, they got the semi-horror vibe done really well, it definitely had me glued to the screen.

Hakaba-Kitaro-06

Extras

There are actually a couple great extras on the discs. You’ve got your regular Clean Opening, story board clips, trailers for other series’, and so on but the one really cool extra is the “Interview with Shigeru Mizuki” who created the series and has worked on it for many, many years. It’s just nice to see that little bit more, I know it’s not a great deal but the fact that it IS an interview with the series creator is fairly special and it should be brought to the forefront.

Hakaba-Kitaro-07

Overall

Hakaba Kitaro is a great little series, you can watch it in a few hours, because it’s only eleven episodes, and not get bored of it. It’s one of those series’ that has you thinking about it when you’re not watching it, it has you craving it when you can’t possibly watch it. There aren’t a lot of shows that can do that. To enjoy this though I feel that you have to be a fan of the semi-horror, yokai-style, demon, ghost, supernatural types of series’ and it really doesn’t hurt to know a little bit about Japanese mythology, it adds to the series, it really does. But really, at the end of the day, the series only really had one or two things wrong with it and they were fairly small. If you’re into the ancient, supernatural stuff don’t pass this one up.
