Overview
There are a small number of RPG franchises that can stand the test of time and consistently see popular releases over a nearly twenty year period of time. One such franchise that has done this is the Tales series from Namco Bandai and among the numerous titles they have released, the eleven year old Tales of Symphonia is often regarded as being the best game in the series. As such, when an HD release of that game and its sequel Dawn of the New World was announced for release fans of the series were ecstatic. Well now that Tales of Symphonia Chronicles has been released, does the original Symphonia hold up as well as we may remember?

Story
The land of Sylvarant is slowly dying as the mana needed to grow crops and sustain life is slowly disappearing from the world and only the “Chosen One’s” journey of restoration can bring mana back to the land. Since the last Chosen failed in their journey, a girl named Colette in Iselia has been raised as the next Chosen and when she is summoned to start her journey; her childhood friends Lloyd Irving and Genis Sage leave the village to help protect her on her journey.

Now while Tales of Symphonia’s storyline sounds like the most basic set-up for a JRPG story and honestly it is a bit simplistic. The world can be saved by a group of younger heroes fighting against everything in their path. At least that is how Symphonia seems at first, as the game’s story quickly grows in scale as the player advances through the journey of restoration. What begins as a few small hints quickly leads to interesting plot twists culminating in a great story made all the better by the colorful cast of characters found within the story.

While Tales titles generally have a likable cast of characters, Tales of Symphonia’s characters are probably the best around. Each of the characters have their own stories that develop and grow alongside the main plot, something that is rare in today’s RPG standard where character growth is usually kept at a minimum. Then again, it also helps that as mentioned before you can’t help but love the cast’s personalities and their interactions with one another.

tales-of-symphonia-chronicles-tgs- (11)

That being said, what comes as a disappointment to many who pick up this bundle, Tales of Symphonia’s sequel Dawn of the New World is not only unimaginative but ties the story to two generally unlikable new characters. Sure many of the characters from the first game return but there is a lack of connection between them. So while it does help continue the story so players can see what happened after the events of the first game, it is an unfortunately bland experience with a story that is overshadowed by the first so much that many may wish it wasn’t there.

Now as a quick mention to the characters in the game, throughout both Tales of Symphonia titles there are numerous “Skits” that appear at specific times or found at specific areas. These skits are small tidbits of dialogue between the characters as they either discuss something that just happened or something at random. These moments really help bring the cast to life as characters and, even though we are limited to only character portraits in the first game, these skits the characters are highly expressive and reveal more about themselves than the basic story lets on.

Gameplay
Many Tales titles have a very standard style of gameplay that can be both simplistic and in-depth at the same time. As players venture out in their journey in the original Tales of Symphonia they will be able to explore numerous towns, venture out into the open world, enter dungeons and solve little puzzles to advance, all while fighting against numerous enemies. The same can be said for Dawn of the New World, though the overworld map is removed from this game.

Tales-of-Symphonia-Chronicles-oct- (5)

Players will be spending the bulk of their time fighting against enemies in both of these games as both of these titles are classic JRPGs which means that they do not pull any punches and will require the player to grind levels at points to face off against upcoming bosses. Once again Dawn of the New World is downgraded in this aspect, the combat system is incredibly fluid and fun to use. Every battle takes place in real time with players running around the field in straight lines as they charge at their opponent to defeat it. Using “Artes” (Skills) is as simple as one button press to always keep the action fast paced and even the most inexperienced RPG player can find themselves comfortable with this enjoyable system.

Of course if you want to make things a bit more complicated, players can also choose to set up their AI partners to perform certain actions and many enemies in the game have various elemental weaknesses and strengths that can be exploited to deal increased damage. There are also “Unison Attacks” that can be performed which sees all four party members being able to perform an Arte at once to deal a large amount of damage to an opponent. Depending on what skills are used and when they are used can also allow players to unleash a final combined attack that deals additional damage to help serve as a coup de grace for most basic foes.

Tales-of-Symphonia-Chronicles-oct- (19)

Now, as mentioned above Dawn of the New World’s battle system is not quite as enjoyable as the first game’s and this is mostly due to the fact that players can use various monsters they have created pacts with in battle instead of players. While this is a neat idea and one that we have seen used since, it doesn’t offer the same feel as the first game, especially since most of the time these monsters are almost mandatory party members.

Visuals
Now taking one game that is over ten years old and creating an HD experience is quite a challenge but thankfully I can say that Namco Bandai has tackled the challenge quite nicely as the various character models and the environment in Tales of Symphonia look gorgeous and smooth compared to the GameCube version and there are even some shiny new pieces of artwork that is used for Skits and Mystic Artes as well as some bonus costumes from more recent Tales games if you have a PS3 save file for Xillia. It is worth noting though that the over world is still incredibly under detailed and it almost appears as if the company did little to touch it in their revamp.

tales-of-symphonia-chronicles-sheena

As for Dawn of the New World, it is easy to say that this title does look better than its predecessor since it was created back in 2008 for the Wii. It also abandoned the same character style for a more modern look which took to the new coat of paint better than the first game, but it seems that a lot of the environments have lost their charm because of this.

Audio
It is worth noting that although both games in this collection have been given the HD treatment, very little was done to improve the game’s voice over. That being said, the company has offered for the first time ever the Japanese voice track for the game which means that players can choose to listen to that instead. The English cast for Symphonia remains very impressive to this day and considering how many gamers have fond memories of the title, hearing their Japanese voices will serve as either a treat or a shock. Anyways, as mentioned the game’s voice work was not revised which means that the voice actor changes in New World still remain which means that if you don’t feel like trying it out on the first game, then you should probably use it on the second.

Tales-of-Symphonia-Chronicles-oct- (12)

One thing that the Tales series is known for its incredible soundtrack and Tales of Symphonia does not disappoint as the game features some amazing pieces of music throughout the game and even Dawn of the New World is impressive to a lesser extent.

Overall
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles takes one of the best Tales RPGs in the series and combines it with one that many fans would rather forget. Tales of Symphonia is the shining example of what a JRPG should be and the HD modification from Namco has made the game as viable as ever for today’s gamer. Although a number of fans would have been willing to jump at the cheaper than normal price for the original Symphonia alone, it is at least nice that Dawn of the World is bundled in even though it is eclipsed in every way by the other game and it allows players who might have never touched the second game to see how the story continues.

Overview
Originally released to positive critical acclaim in late 2010, Dead Nation was a game that grabbed the attention of PlayStation 3 gamers around the world. Now, four years and a new console generation later, Sony, Housemarque, and Climax Studios are hoping to recapture bottled lightning with an updated version of the game. How does Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition stand up though? Does it merely shamble along or will it eat your brain?

dead-nation-apocalypse-edition-screenshot-04

Story
In line with the clichéd stories of so many other zombie games, the world has been infected by a virus. Turning the entire populace into a shambling horde, few are spared from the necrotic disease. A year after the virus outbreak, Jack McReady and Scarlett Blake find themselves in a position where they must leave their shelter to find food and water. Immune to the current strain of the virus, they set out to secure their supplies, but a this will be no ordinary scavenging run.

dead-nation-apocalypse-edition-screenshot-03

Gameplay
Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition is a top-down isometric twin stick shooter. At its core, the controls are simple. You’ll maneuver around the world, taking down zombies with a variety of guns and grenades. You’ll have to stab, sprint, and scramble to conquer the odds and survive.

The controls in Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition feel smooth and responsive. Jack and Scarlett are given several maneuvers to help them through the wreckage of civilization. You’ll run with the left joystick, aim with the right joystick, fire with R1, and throw grenades with L1. Beyond that, you can use the D-pad to switch grenade types and guns, giving you the ability to formulate and execute various strategies on the fly. The game also utilizes the Dualshock 4’s built-in speaker to let you know when you’ve picked up health or other items, or to let you know what weapon or grenade type you’ve just switched to. It’s a pleasant surprise and it can be helpful in a pinch.

dead-nation-apocalypse-edition-screenshot-05

As you work through each mission, you’ll be able to interact with a variety of objects in the environment to get money or collectibles or to activate traps for the zombies. You can get health packs from vending machines, take money from the trunks of cars, and pick up collectible mementos that offer an amusing tribute to the fallen. You can also shoot barrels to make them explode, set off car alarms to attract a zombie horde and blow it up, flip on electric fences, and more. It makes exploring each level and interacting with the environment fun and interesting.

When you complete a portion of each mission, you’ll be rewarded with a checkpoint. These offer a momentary welcome respite from the horde, but more importantly they give you a chance to buy and upgrade weapons as well as equip any new armor you may have discovered. They also replenish your health, giving you a fresh start for the next leg of your journey.

dead-nation-apocalypse-edition-screenshot-02

As you explore and fight through the city, you’ll encounter an impressive array of shambling foes. You’ll want to keep a watchful eye of your surroundings, as the game does a fantastic job of sending environment-relevant zombies after you. Near a police station? Expect undead with police uniforms and orange jumpsuits. Is that a high school bus up ahead? You’ll get to see zombies in football gear and cheerleading outfits. Firefighters, biker gangs, and much more join an impressive cast to keep things interesting. On top of the regular zombies, you’ll also encounter special zombies that can sprint, jump, slice, and even shoot at you. There’s rarely a dull moment!

Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition offers several different game modes to play through. While everyone will probably want to take their time and work through the storyline alone, they can also choose to play it with a friend, both on the same machine or online. On top of the story mode, the game also offers several other modes to try your hand at. Arcade mode lets you choose various paths as you continue to gear up while zombies get stronger with each passing round. You can also pick up the PlayStation 4-exclusive Challenge mode that lets you chase down your friends’ high scores. A particularly interesting new mode, though, lets you livestream your gameplay to Twitch, offering your viewers choices at various times to alter the challenge for the player. There’s a great variety of modes to try and the livestream option feels like a great gateway for some interesting viewer-driven options.

dead-nation-apocalypse-edition-screenshot-01

Visuals & Audio
The upgrade to HD has been a good jump for the Dead Nation franchise. Everything is sharp and immersive. The detail of the environment and zombies keep things interesting and thematic, adding to the immersion. The various particle effects (fire, fog, etc.) also do an excellent job of drawing you into setting.

The audio job serves the title well. The music sets an eerie mood without distracting from the on-screen action. The guttural screams and groans of zombies give you a sense of urgency and panic as you wander through the mist. The incorporation of audio output to the Dualshock 4 is a fun, helpful feature as well.

Overall
Overall, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition is a great game. The gameplay is fun, the game looks great, and the audio design will help draw you in as well. With a variety of game modes and cooperative play, there’s plenty here to keep you blasting away both alone and with  a pal. Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition does an excellent job bringing a last-gen classic to the current generation.

Moe Mascot Izumi Matsumoto Returns

Izumi-Matsumoto-Promo-Pic-01

Anime fans will be excited to shave today as the Izumi Electronics Company release their second line up of razors, promoted by their moe mascot Izumi Matsumoto.

The pink haired 19 year old distributed the first set of razors last year in shops around Akihabara; the limited release electronic shavers featured her face on the front of the handle and came with a special carry pouch that showed her winking. The new IZF-V315-E has gone one step further and fully incorporates Matsumoto into the product; a full illustration of her is shown on the front of each shaver and a special display will also be included in each package.

The three bladed shaver is the newest product from the Izumi Company and is both waterproof and more durable than previous models, it’s also only available online with a limited stock of 500 units. Good luck trying to find them from the selected list of retail sites, each pack cost around 6000 Yen ($60USD) so it would be wise to get two of them (and send one down my way).

Izumi-Matsumoto-Promo-Pic-02

For those of you who want to know a little more about Matsumoto herself; she is 156cm tall, loves to eat strawberries, considers decomposition to be her special skill and has her own twitter page with over 2000 followers. This is one of the weirder anime razor crossovers that have been released, but the creativity behind the promotion is pretty interesting and it’s unlikely this will be the last we see of her.

Let us know what you think about Izumi Matsumoto and the shavers by leaving a comment down below.

Tomoaki Kohguchi The 64 Year Old Cosplayer

Tomoaki-Kohguchi-Cosplay-Pic-01

Cast your minds back to last year when Attack on Titan was airing, it was around half way through the season when a photo of an old man in Dot Pixis cosplay was uploaded and the resemblance is nothing but spot on. I am happy to say that this was not a one off occurrence as this awesome man is an actual cosplayer and has recently turned 65 years old.

His name is Tomoaki Kohguchi and has become somewhat of a public figure in the anime community; when he’s not working his day job as a businessman, he’s attending conventions in Japan dressed as characters from various anime including One Piece, Ao No Exorcist and of course his right on the nose Master Rochi from Dragon Ball Z. Kohguchi is also a member of the Hiroshima Cosquerade Committee, a group that runs various cosplay events in order to promote Japanese pop culture within the Hiroshima prefecture. You can find out more about the turtle hermit by checking out his twitter or Facebook page, the latter of which has over 39,000 likes.

Hozuki No Reitetsu Episode 9 Impressions

Hozuki-No-Reitetsu-Episode-9-Screenshot-01

Hozuki No Reitetsu
Episode 9 – The Ultimate Example Of Ruin Through Wine And Women/Awash With Drunks Who Came Home

Another week, another episode and I’m so glad because I cannot get enough of Hozuki No Reitetsu. Welcome back to another installment of Hozuki No Reitetsu Anime Impressions, I hope you’ve all been as excited about this new episode as I have! This week marks the release of Hozuki No Reitetsu episode nine: An episode revolving solely around drinking and the effects it can have on certain people. As Hakutaku tries his hand at out-drinking Hozuki and certain residents of hell start an alcohol-fueled uprising against a mythical monster the audience comes to the realisation that maybe too much of a good thing can actually be pretty bad, even if that good thing is sweet, sweet booze.

Hozuki-No-Reitetsu-Episode-9-Screenshot-04

The Ultimate Example Of Ruin Through Wine And Women:

You know…sometimes it’s hard being a sex-crazed, conscience-ignoring, party fiend…not that I’d know anything about that. This half of this weeks episode shows us that medicine men like to have a good time too; babes, booze and everything in between, Hakutaku loves it and he’s not going to bring his rock and roll lifestyle to a halt just because he can’t hold his liquor…though it does bug him that Hozuki can drink like a fish.

After one hell of a sex-fuelled night with one of the most beautiful “ladies of the night” working in hell, Hakutaku wakes up to a headache and the same thoughs every occasional overindulger has when waking up from a night on the grog; “I’m never drinking again”. That thought is short-lived though, especially after Momotaro mentions Hozuki and his intolerance the alcohol. “He drinks like a serpent!” Hakutaku says as he makes a mental decision to go and drink with the citizens of hell at a chilled nightspot.

Hozuki-No-Reitetsu-Episode-9-Screenshot-02

Momotaro, being the kind-hearted worker he is, agrees to tag along with another one of Hakutaku’s silly ventures into hell, luckily “Tao-Taro” (as he’s referred to by Hakutaku) gets along with Hozuki and the gang…though you can’t really say the same about Hakutaku. The rest of the episode has Hozuki and the other-worldly pharmacist go head-to-head verbally as each one tries to outdo the other in some way shape or form. Though I’m not necessarily a fan of Hakutaku , I do actually enjoy the episodes that he’s present in simply because of the way Hozuki acts when he’s around.

It’s like the two characters revert back to children, constantly in competition, constantly butting heads and constantly being told how similar they both are to each other. It’s funny, I’m actually grinning slightly at the simple thought these particular scenes. What’s good is that the series shows all the different sides to its main character; he’s a fairly stoic lead but we’ve practically seen every die of him whether it be his sleepy side, his silly side or his jealous side, we’ve seen it all and some thanks goes to the involvement of Hakutaku who forces him into the more”adolescent Hozuki” situations.

Hozuki-No-Reitetsu-Episode-9-Screenshot-03

Awash With Drunks Who Came Home:

This half of the episode, though under a different title, continues directly off of the first half. Everyone that was previously drinking in the bar seems to have had their fill, including old King Enma who’s another bourbon and cola away from a non-stop storytelling session regarding his uninteresting grandchildren…King Enma has kids? Who knew! Hozuki is brought news about a somewhat rebellion that has sparked in one of the alcohol-based hells. This one just so happens to be a place where the souls of those who have done wrong while under the influence of alcohol (that’s essentially all of us) are sent and tortured for the rest of infinity.

It’s not that bad of a hell to be honest, they kind of just can’t have alcohol…there’s no physical torture of any kinds. If it was me, I’d just sit back and take it, at least I’m not the guy locked in the iron maiden for eternity. It seems like the caretaker for this particular hell Orochi, an eight-headed snake monster from Japanese mythology, felt like a bit of sake…the only problem is that there’s no alcohol allowed in this part of hell so once the souls of the dead booze-hounds found out…well, let’s just say this particular portion of hell quickly became party central. Hozuki turn up to a horrifying sight; hundreds of drunk people! All in one place! It was like a damn music festival and Hozuki is here to pull the plug and shut it all down.

Hozuki-No-Reitetsu-Episode-9-Screenshot-05

Once he finishes giving Orochi a lecture about not having alcohol in the area, Hozuki does his best to come up with a plan to teach these souls a lesson they’ll never forget but unfortunately he comes up dry. Hakutaku, who’s slithered in like the nosey snake that he is, makes a deal with Hozuki: He’ll let him in on the plan he’s concocted to torture these euphoric souls but only after Hozuki cuts him a “phat” check that’ll pay for the bill he racked up ordering hookers and buying alcohol. Hozuki accepts and the plan is set in motion: Gives these souls as much booze as they can handle. No! Give them more booze then they can handle! Force them into hating the thing they used to love, it’s a nice throwback to the cliche line a father would say to his son after he finds out he’s been smoking; “You like to smoke? Well here, smoke the whole packet!”, classic!

Hozuki No Reitetsu does one thing so well above all else that it does; it finds a way to take these epic mythological legends and turn them into silly characters that act entirely opposite to their stories. Orochi, a scourge in the world of Japanese mythology, is nothing but a groundskeepers in Hozuki No Reitetsu! One that can’t even do his job right. No one fears him, they simply…”know” him like you would know your neighbour. That’s not just for that particular character either, Hozuki No Reitetsu seems to be able to turn anything into a quirky and super silly version of whatever it used to be. I find it funny considering anime usually does the opposite. Over exaggeration is always present in anime but under exaggeration is something that Hozuki No Reitetsu has over all the rest and, my God, does it do it well!

Pokémon The Movie: “The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie” – New Information Released

- A Japanese Poster Of The Movie -

Over the weekend that just passed, the official site for the upcoming Pokemon X and Y anime movie “The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie” was updated to include not only an official summary of the story itself but also some information regarding new characters introduced specifically for the film. A few weeks ago we brought you news of the movie and its storyline but at that point in time there had been no official synopsis released, there was only a small explanation that gave us a simplified view of the plotline but that has now changed seeing as an official one has been released.

The Diamond Ore Country is a beautiful land located deep underground, where the “Jewel Pokémon” Carbink live in peace and prosperity. In this country, a giant diamond known as the “Sacred Diamond” can be found. The Sacred Diamond has played the role of an important energy resource throughout the ages. However, the princess of the Diamond Ore Country, Diancie, currently does not possess this power.

Having encountered Satoshi and Pikachu, Diancie sets out on a journey to save her country; a journey in search of the “Life Pokémon” Xerneas, seeking its sacred power. Along the way, Rocket Gang, the thief named Marilyn, and a Ninja thief attack Diancie. Can Diancie save its country? And what is the fate of Satoshi and Pikachu! Along for the journey are the parent-child combo of Milis and Argos, but on the journey, they find a cocoon where the “Destruction Pokémon” Yveltal, which is said to have once eradicated all life in the Kalos region, sleeps…

Pokemon-XY-Movie-The-Cocoon-Of-Destruction-And-Diancie-Japanese-Poster-Art-02

The brand-new characters Marilyn, Ninja Riot (referred to as “Ninja theif”), Milis and Argos (both of which were not mentioned above) are the four movie-only characters that were revealed alongside the synopsis. Marilyn and Ninja Riot (alongside Team Rocket and Yveltal) will serve as the antagonists of the movie. Marilyn is the owner of a Delphox, Ninja Riot a Greninja and Milis (NOT one of the antagonists) a Chesnaught.

Milis and her father Argos are said to be two characters who will help Ash and co. throughout their adventure with Carbink to save the Diamond Ore Country. A small group four Carbink have also been revealed as characters who will join Ash and their princess Diancie for the movie, they’ve even been named: Daii, Majima, Knight and Joke. Daii is apparently an elder Carbink while the other three are referred to as “butlers” or “subordinates”.

Below we’ve provided a small gallery with images of the newly announced characters for all of you to enjoy. Keep your eyes on the site though because we’ve also caught wind that a new trailer for the movie has been or is soon to be released and I can assure you we will report on it as soon as it drops. For now just enjoy the few images we have.

J-Stars Victory Vs. – Trailers Released For Jonathan, Toriko And Others

– Jonathan Joestar In Action –

If you’re a frequent reader of the site you’d know that almost every week the good people over at Namco Bandai games release a bunch of trailers that focus on some of the individual characters of the upcoming action/brawler titles; “J-Stars Victory Vs.“. In the past we’ve seen characters like Goku (DBZ), Seiya (Saint Seiya) and Arale (Dr. Slump) take the spotlight for their very own character trailers.

This time around we’ve been gifted with five character-specific trailers, all of which I’m sure will make fans of Shonen Jump real happy: Medaka Kurokami (Medaka Box), Taro Yamada (Chinyuki Taro to Yukaina Nakama Tachi), Jonathan Joestar (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Meisuke Nueno (Hell Teacher Nube) and Toriko (Toriko) are the five characters spotlighted in the new batch of trailers, all of which can be seen just below this post so head down there now to give them a look and don’t forget; “J-Stars Victory Vs.” comes out in Japan on the 19th of March for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita.

Medaka Kurokami (Medaka Box):

Taro Yamada (Chinyuki Taro to Yukaina Nakama Tachi):
