Pop-Up City Farm Planted in Bustling Canary Wharf Station – Alex James Launches ‘Be a Farm Hero’ Campaign from King

Survey Reveals a Massive 9 Out of 10 City Dwellers Want More Local City Farms

LONDON, April 9th 2014: – Britain, take a break, spring is in full swing and it’s time to bloom! The ‘Be a Farm Hero’ campaign, championing the benefits of embracing a bite-size piece of the country life to de-stress from the chaotic city living, was launched today with a pop-up farm experience set amongst the gleaming skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. Bringing the tranquility of the countryside to the city, the ‘Be a Farm Hero’ campaign is from Farm Heroes Saga, the new match-three game from King, the creators of the phenomenally successful Candy Crush Saga.

New research findings, commissioned by Farm Heroes Saga to celebrate the game’s launch, highlighted a large proportion of urban dwellers crave the country life to relax. In response to this,Farm Heroes Saga has teamed up with Alex James, Blur bassist turned farm owner, to launch a global campaign encouraging more city dwellers to ‘Be a Farm Hero’ and try a bite-sized portion of farming as a way of switching off from busy city living.

In London’s Canary Wharf, Alex James today laid the foundations of the ‘Be a Farm Hero’ campaign, encouraging city workers to roll-up their shirt sleeves, muck in and learn some simple steps to grow their own produce, even using their office desktop space to create their very own green area.

“I completely understand the lure of country life having made the switch from city living myself,” said Alex James. “The opportunity to grow your own fruit and veg shouldn’t be limited to those who live in the country. Farm Heroes Saga brings a taste of the country to the city. Urban farms are a fantastic escape from the concrete jungle and it’s been brilliant to raise a few smiles from the Suited and booted Up farm in Canary Wharf.’’

The Event

In the dedicated allotment space in the pop-up farm, the public were treated to live demonstrations, given top tips for sowing  their Cropsie seeds and learnt how easy it is to start growing, even if they don’t have a garden or windowsill. To show how growing can even work in the office space, a lucky few had their pen pots, mugs and filing trays given a special green makeover, filled with soil and seeds, to help brighten up their working day.

Farm Heroes Saga is played by millions across the globe every day as a way to switch off  for a few minutes and have fun on their stressful city commutes” said Tommy Palm, Games Guru at King. “Always wanting to create moments of fun for our players and in response to this global research, we’re encouraging city dwellers to be Farm Heroes themselves.  It’s well known that tending to plants or vegetables can keep stress at bay and put a spring in your step, so, we’re bringing these key qualities of the game to life by encouraging urbanites to roll up their shirt sleeves and grow their own Cropsies after the well-loved characters in the game.”

Seed packets of carrots, strawberries and lettuce were handed out for people to join the campaign and start growing. At the pop-up farm it was not all grow, grow, grow, with pampering sessions on offer, including nail art with a farm-themed twist, professional therapists offering Shiatsu massages, and also a chance to meet selection of adorable farm yard animals for that authentic countryside experience – all in the middle of Canary Wharf.

Survey Results

The campaign comes off the back of a survey conducted by Farm Heroes Saga highlighting the extent to which people feel deprived of greenery, boxed in by their concrete jungle. More than half (52.2%) of respondents felt that lack of green areas contributed to city living stress, whilst in the capital only a third of Londoner’s (33.9%) claimed to have access to a garden, compared to over 40% nationally.

The Farm Heroes Saga team is also educating people about the opportunities to tend to their plants on their desk as the survey showed that almost half of Londoner’s (45%) forget to take breaks during their busy working days, compared to the national average of nearly one in four.

When it comes to de-stressing, nearly one third of people say that playing mobile games like Farm Heroes Saga and Candy Crush Saga helps them chill out, with a quarter saying that it gives them a brief escape from the real world.

King, the world’s leading casual games company and creator of global hit game Candy Crush Saga, recently launched Farm Heroes Saga on mobile and it’s now available to download for free on iOS and Android platforms.

Additional findings from the UK and European survey included:

  • A whopping 90.6% of people agreed there should be more community gardens, city farms and rooftop gardens in cities and urban areas.
  •  Three quarters of people living in Paris (78%) and Madrid (73%) reported they found their city lives stressful, compared to 60.9% of Londoners.
  • Almost half of Londoner’s (45%) in a national survey said they forgot to take breaks during the day because they are so busy, compared to the national average of nearly one in five (19%).
  • Nearly one third of people say that playing mobile games helps them chill out.
  • 1 in 5 (22%) of people who play mobile games said it gives them a little escape from the real world, jumping to over 40% of 16-24 year olds.
  • 52.2% of respondents felt that lack of green areas contributed to city living stress.
  • Only 1/3 of Londoners (33.9%) claimed to have access to a garden, compared to over 40% nationally.
  • 45% of London’s forget to take breaks during their busy working days.

Egg-stravaganza Across the Ages: Forge of Empires Celebrates Easter!

Hamburg, April 9, 2014. InnoGames just implemented this year’s Easter Event into its online strategy game Forge of Empires. The Easter Event 2014 introduces a range of new buildings and avatars – it will also be possible to upgrade special buildings from previous events to a players’ current age. In order to gather those items, players have to collect eggs, which are hidden all over a city’s decorations. InnoGames also released a video, explaining the feature.

Friendly bunnies dash around the game’s cities and hide eggs behind bushes, trees and other decorations. At the brand new Easter Trader, those eggs can be exchanged for special buildings, units and upgrades. Even blueprints for a unique great building are exclusively available during the Easter event! Players can help their friends and neighbours by hiding eggs in their cities too, allowing them to gather the valuable goods faster. The Event will run until April 23. Players can trade Easter Eggs until April 27.

Forge of Empires is a browser-based strategy game, where players, tasked with leading their own city to prosperity, can research new technologies, build impressive historical buildings and enlarge their sphere of influence through military campaigns and skillful dealing. The game has recently been awarded the title of “Best Browser Game 2013” at the German Computer Game Award (Deutscher Computerspielpreis).

With about 120 million registered players, InnoGames is one of the world’s leading developers and providers of online games. The Hamburg-based company has scored major successes with games such as Tribal Wars, The West and Grepolis

Constant C Review

Constant C
Developer: International Games System
Publisher: International Games System
Platforms: PC (reviewed), Xbox 360
Release Date: 7 March, 2013
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview

Constant C has been around for the best part of a year, but only launched on Steam in March after a successful Greenlight campaign, it’s also seen a release on XBLA. Taiwanese developers International Games System have been around for a long time, making PC and arcade games since the early 1990s. This title is yet another indie puzzle platformer, and even its core game mechanics play into another trend of the indie scene: the manipulation of time, gravity and space as the core means of puzzle solving.

Story

Somewhere in the depths of space the laws of physics have ceased to function. Time has stopped aboard an experimental station, and all its scientists have disappeared. The only things left functioning in the temporal freeze are the station AI and a little rescue robot, the player character. After restoring power to the AI the rescue bot is given the ability to get things moving again – any object that comes within the circular time field around him will once more be free to move through time and space.

His task is to collect data tubes and restore the AI to full power so that the station (and of course, the entire universe) can be saved from the mysterious mishap. The story is barebones in terms of plot elements but little details keep it ticking along: the AI expresses itself with emoticons, grabbing enough of the data tubes unlocks cut-scenes,  and of course the repair bot finds that he is not the only thing loose in the station…

Gameplay

Constant C takes a quick session of play to open up, but when it does it proves to be a very smart, taxing little puzzler with tight physics. You begin the game with no powers at all, but swiftly get powered up with your own personal bubble of temporal normality- meaning that any objects within that circle around you act once more as if time is passing normally. Boxes suspended in the air will fall to the ground, deadly rotating gears will rotate once more, and moving platforms will be restored to life.

Whilst this is a fun mechanic in itself, things are improved immensely when the ability to tinker with gravity, as well as time, unlocks soon after. Initially changing the direction of the gravitational field can only be done with pre-placed switches, which is obviously a little limited. A few stages later however and you can do it independently, opening up the range and complexity of puzzles that the game can and will throw at you. It’s one of those titles that took me a little while to get my brain into, but after half an hour of feeling like a blundering idiot, I got to grips with the mechanics and found myself thinking in the correct way.

That said there are still a lot of deaths to be had in Constant C, as falling just a little too far will mean instant death. It’s a very clever limitation that means you can’t dodge the puzzles by just flinging yourself and the obstacles around. You can play by trial and error if you like, but later, multi-step stages punish this approach- there are no checkpoints in the fairly short (in gameplay terms at least, there’s lots of thinking time to add) levels. You do have the ability to zoom out and pan the camera, enabling a bit of forward planning if you don’t feel like dying ten times in order to figure out the level.

constant-c-screenshot

Of course the puzzles become ever more complex as you collect enough data tubes to unlock new rooms. Falling boxes and moving platforms are joined by destructible crates, balls, lasers and more, and the fact that gravity acts upon these things only when you’re close to them adds an element to the puzzles that I found really fresh and exciting. Momentum also plays a big part in the game, especially if you plan on taking on speed run mode, which challenges you to complete levels in seemingly impossible lengths of time. Rotate the rooms successfully and you can throw your robot around corners and across obstacles, completing a level in seconds if you time everything just right.

Even playing through the game normally requires precision, especially in later levels where the tiniest movement can mean the difference between success and failure. Constant C supports both keyboard and 360 gamepad input, and even though I usually find a gamepad more comfortable in this type of game, I found that the keyboard controls here were just as good at the job. In addition to the time attack mode there are also more data tubes than you need scattered throughout the levels, so there’s plenty of opportunity to go back to an earlier stage and pick up tubes by solving puzzles that just weren’t going anywhere before.

Audio & Visual

There are a lot of sci-fi infused puzzle platformers out there, and whilst Constant C’s general aesthetic isn’t anything new, it boasts some nice details that set it apart. Most obvious is the character model of the repair bot, an oddly sweet concoction of black and white. It’s silhouette-like appearance is echoed in the darkness that surrounds each level, and the lighting throughout is surprisingly well done. What’s really enjoyable are the subtle touches- the way that the background elements come to life as you pass them, and the soot marks left by the explosion of robot that marks a failed run.

There isn’t any voice acting and the sound effects are fairly standard and unobtrusive. The soundtrack is great though, and is appropriately sci-fi without being too sombre.

constant-c-01

Overall

Constant C is a tough but fair puzzler that will intrigue anyone who likes to challenge their brain. Well made and well executed, its gravity and time manipulating mechanics work together extremely well and solving some of the later puzzles is incredibly satisfying. Players who really enjoy the game have the chance to dig in and perfect their technique with the time attack mode, and the presentation is sweet and subtle, with just enough story to pull you along.

Love Live!’s second season licensed by NIS America

love-live-school-idol-project-season-2-promo-artWell that sure didn’t take too long. Yesterday we posted that Crunchyroll would be streaming Love Live! School Idol Project’s second season but we also mentioned how last year when the first season was licensed for streaming on Crunchyroll, that NIS America also revealed that they had picked up the rights to release the series in North America.

At the time we wondered whether or not NIS America would pick up Love Live! Season Two as they have yet to release the first season or announce a release date as of yet, but it looks like we didn’t have to wait long for that announcement. Today the company has announced that they have licensed the second season of Love Live! and just like the first season, they are planning on giving the anime a home release sometime in the future.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions English dub release announced

Chuunibyou-Demo-Koi-ga-Shitai-screenshot-01

Earlier this year Sentai Filmworks announced that they were planning on releasing a number of anime titles in May this year, one of which was an anime many fans have been waiting for, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!. However when they announced that they were planning on releasing the first season as a subtitle only release, these fans were rather angry.

As such, Sentai has been listening to their fans and have just announced that they will be releasing an English dubbed version of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! Season 1 sometime later this year. This will be a limited edition numbered box set that will be released on both Blu-ray and DVD, though the exact release date has not been announced at this time. As for the subtitle only DVD release, it is still set for May 27th.

LEGO The Hobbit’s Launch Trailer Prepares for an Adventure

lego-the-hobbit-screenshot-01

LEGO games are sort of like marshmallows. Sweet, good in moderation, and surprisingly filling. Today, WB Games delivered a marshmallow of their own with the launch trailer of LEGO The Hobbit, the brand new title that allows players to relive the telling of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug.

As always, the charm is high with this one, and fans of the two films will be happy to know that there will be further installments down the way as the trilogy wraps. For now however, you can pick up LEGO The Hobbit in stores for just about every console under the sun as of today. Watch the clip down below.
