The truth shines through…

Episode 4: That Wish is Blasphemy

Well last episode certainly gave us a better idea of Akira now didn’t it? Having broken Yuzuki during their match, Ruko is noticeably shocked when her friend reappears more chipper than ever. But has Yuzuki managed to overcome the mental anguish inflicted on her, or is it all just a facade? The second one…it’s a facade.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-4-02
Hitoe’s awkward around people? I never would’ve guessed

Having had her wish brutalised by Akira, Yuzuki was understandably angry and depressed at her impossible situation. Seeming to opt for the comfort of loneliness, an apparent change of heart led her to Ruko’s place. After spending the night joyfully cooking, cleaning and chatting it up with one of the coolest grandmothers in anime, Yuzuki and Ruko share a brief moment of honesty. Showcasing just how close a friend she considers Ruko, Yuzuki reveals her reason for competing against fellow selectors. To her credit, Ruko doesn’t judge her friend for her wish, which is nice…I guess. I mean being there for your friends is good, but at what point do you take a step back and discuss the issue objectively. I’m not saying that Akira’s barrage of insults was right by any means, but come on. It’s her brother she’s pining for. Somebody needs to sort that out.

On a purer note, Hitoe manages to finally overcome her shyness (barely) and accepts Ruko’s invitation of friendship. Plus, since she was there, Yuzuki is now her friend as well. Bonus. As they begin a beautiful new friendship, we learn that Selectors are indeed able to play WIXOSS just like any other person, as long as they leave their LRIGs out of their deck. So it would appear that the cards possess more power than initially revealed. Not merely an extension of their Selector, they are the key into the battle realm. As the girls have fun playing a card game the way it was meant to be played, we are also granted a rather rare case of interaction between the LRIGs themselves. Witnessing Hitoe finally interact with other people, Midoriko laments over the fact that now she no longer needs to battle, having already attained her wish. Though happy for her Selector, Midoriko is also clearly sad over the prospect of being forgotten. After an interjection by Tama, Hanayo and Midoriko begin to have a rather cryptic conversation regarding the true nature of the LRIGs. Though we aren’t given any real facts, there is definitely something more to these cards. Something that Tama isn’t even aware of.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-4-03
How can you say no to that face?

But this is WIXOSS, so things don’t stay rosy for too long. Ready and raring for another battle, Akira enlists the help of a veritable army of girls who attend Ruko’s school in order to track her down. Luckily for Akira, Ruko’s fellow highschoolers are apparently some of the dumbest and most over the top people on the planet, resigning themselves to literally hunting Ruko down in order to appease Akira. At one point a girl straight up insults her teacher for asking what is going on. Seriously, put that kid in detention or something. Do celebrities really have enough power that “civilians” will do anything to make them happy? Man society is out of whack. Anyway, after managing to capture Ruko, she is brought to Akira and a battle begins…or it would’ve if Iona hadn’t interrupted. After staring Ruko down, the new Selector somehow knows that she does not possess a wish of her own, describing her participation in WIXOSS as blasphemous. Pretty harsh words coming from a stranger. Though it does once again call Ruko herself into question.

More than anything, this episode shows us that Ruko is developing quite the appetite for combat. It’s gotten to the point where a number of characters have noted the similarities between Ruko and Tama, who we already know has a bit of a bloodthirsty side. Though Yuzuki explains that a fight with Akira may lead to Ruko hating WIXOSS, she nevertheless wishes to battle anyway. However, this isn’t a simple love of the game. No, Ruko is at her happiest when in a Selector battle. The regular stuff just doesn’t cut it. Though she claims to have no wish of her own, last week showed us that Ruko is in fact closer to realising her desire than anyone else. Now I’m not sure about you, but for me this is one of those times where mystery serves as a source of unrest. At this point it seems like all Ruko wants to do is fight and, with the power to change reality in her hands, who knows what that means for everyone else…Selector or not.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-4-04
Keep your friends close…

With Ruko left contemplating her inherent lack of desire and Akira left pining for battle, we may yet bear witness to quite the confrontation. After all, when two battle hungry Selectors clash, sparks are sure to fly. Plus, with Iona now in the mix, who knows where the Selector’s individual paths will lead them?

“Transformers” To Crossover With “Neon Genesis Evangelion”

Coming straight out of a Japanese hobby magazine this news piece is one that I’m both confused by but also thrilled about seeing as it brings together two of the greatest semi-robot-related franchises of all time; “Transformers” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion”. The picture you see above looks pretty simple I suppose; it’s basically “Optimus Prime” with the colour scheme of “Eva-01” from the “Evangelion” series but it seems as though looks truly can be deceiving because it’s much more than just that.

Word around the internet is that “Takara Tomy”- a Japanese toy, children’s merchandise and entertainment company – actually has plans for a “Transformers” and “Evangelion” crossover. Whether this means they plan on just releasing a figurine of this re-coloured Optimus Prime or that plans go much deeper and a whole line of crossover figurines are in the work is so far uncertain. No specific information on the collaboration was revealed but what came with the magazine ad was a riveting tale to get us all pumped up for what is to come:

The Angels are invading. Breaking a long silence, the mysterious life-forms known as the Angels suddenly appear. The weapons the UN forces gather together in retaliation can’t even scratch them. In the end, they turn to the secret agency, NERV, to manage the anti-Angel strategy.

With Neo-Tokyo 3 in their sights, the Angels slowly advance upon the city…but suddenly a spaceship comes hurtling down from the sky above the Angels: the Sky Lynx! Out of the ship emerges warriors of the far-off planet Cybertron. They’ve come to investigate after noticing an unusual energy reading.

“We can’t let a disaster like the Second Impact occur on this planet.”
“What?! What are these monsters?!”

The shocked Cybertron convoy sets its sights on an enemy much bigger than themselves.

Rebuild-Of-Evangelion-2-Screenshot-01

Had this been released on the 1st of this month I probably wouldn’t have believed it but it’s far too late for an April Fools’ joke, right? Congratulations to all of you out there who have written a “Transformers” X “Evangelion” fanfiction…it looks like your day has finally come. Now the story description for the crossover above does mention a “Cybertron Convoy” so my thoughts on this project is that Optimus Prime wont be the only “Cybertronian” getting a sweet new paint job. I’ve no idea what else there is to say…this is simply amazing. Clearly we haven’t been given all the information on this project so stick to the site for any and all news and information as it gets released.

Mario Golf: World Tour Demo Impressions

mario-golf-world-tour-title-01

With Mario Golf: World Tour releasing in one week’s time (May 3rd in Australia), Nintendo have kindly released a demo so we can try the game before we buy it. The demo offers three holes each from three different courses (the full game offers 10 courses) as well as two challenge modes. One where you have to collect a coin before sinking the ball and another where you have to go through three rings first before putting the ball in. It’s a rather generous demo that gives a good taste of what to expect and also offers a decent challenge to get you hooked. Read on for our full impressions.

mario-golf-world-tour-screenshot-02

Camelot and Nintendo together has always offered a magical and well polished experience and I’m glad to say that Mario Golf: World Tour continues this tradition. If you want this game to play like the previous two Mario Golf games that have appeared on the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube, you will be very happy as the actual gameplay has not changed at all. You can choose from auto or manual mode. Regardless of which mode you’re in you tap A (or the touch screen) to start your shot and A again when you’ve reach your desired power on the meter. If you’re on auto mode that’s it for you, but if you want a bit more control over where your ball lands then you can go pro and try to stop the meter right on the line to ensure a perfect shot that can have top spin, super top spin, backspin or super back spin applied to it, which can have a huge effect on where the ball lands if it comes in on a flat angle. The system was always great and still is here, but there is still alot to consider before you even get to hitting the ball. Club selection, wind speed, what surface your ball lies on, obstacles, slopes and more all have to be considered so that you can get the ball going where you want it to.

mario-golf-world-tour-screenshot-05

A simple tap of the camera button will allow you to map out your shot, with the camera taking you to the place your ball will land with a grid placed underneath and giving you an aerial view if you hit the camera button again. You can move the grid with the d-pad while moving the camera with the control stick (or gyro scope if motion control is your thing). It really gives you the control to map out your shots and only gave me some small issues when I was trying to hit to a much higher ground during the cliff course. Character selection is important here and offers even more to consider as they all have different stats, with some characters having lots of power while some have a curve to their ball trajectory (the demo has Mario, Yoshi, Peach and Bowser playable, with Bowser having a curl in his shot). This is a great way at offering more diversity into the game and means picking the right characters for the course or challege hole will be very important.

mario-golf-screenshot-03Apart from the standard courses there were also two challenge holes to partake in and they are pretty tough. The ring one in particular took me about eight tries to complete as you really have to think about what order you hit the rings in and where your ball lies in order to hit the next one. You also can’t waste a shot as you have to come in under the par limit of 5 and there are three rings on the course all which require seperate strokes to reach. It was good to see some real difficulty being offered in this title (the previous entries were also rather difficult in parts) and for me this was the highlight of the demo. The other challenge hole was a bit easier, with the player having to collect a coin before sinking the ball. The fun thing about this hole was the bullet bill item box you could hit, which let your ball travel in a straight line after it got off the ground rather than arcing. The full game is promising heaps more of these types of items.

mario-golf-screenshot-10

Visually the game is very impressive with everything looking colourful, vibrant and lush. The courses are full of imagination and contain all the Mushroom Kingdom nuances that you would expect from Mushrooms to giant Wigglers and Goombas. Each character looks fantastic and all have different reactions to the score they achieve on a holes. For example if Mario hits a birdie he will grab a star and run around the course while Yoshi will do a massive flutter jump. They’re fun to watch and don’t really get too repetitive as you’re celebrating right alongside them as the sense of reward is great especially after you sink a long putt or get the ball in from a chip in. In terms of audio, all the sounds are great (especially nailing a perfect shot) and all the famous character voices are there. (Who can get tired of Mario saying Woohoo!) The music here is your standard Camelot Mario Golf/Tennis soundtrack as well which is by no means a negative as the tracks have an epic, regal sound that really fits.

mario-golf-world-tour-screenshot-04

If you’re looking for the sequel to Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (which released way back in 2003) then here it is. With excellent gameplay, visuals and audio this will be a hard title to pass up for the 3DS if you’ve ever been into the series or love the Mario sports game as this is one of the best examples of one that has been done right with lots of love and care poured into it, and this is just the demo!. The full game will feature a story mode in Castle Club where you can compete in tournaments and earn customisable gear for your Mii and much more which will be sure to keep players coming back. New courses and characters are also being offered in three DLC packs. Check back for our full review of Mario Golf: World Tour upon it’s release.

“Sentai Filmworks” Licenses “Captain Earth”

Captain-Earth-Promotional-Poster-Cropped-01

Sentai Filmworks” – an American anime publisher and distributor – announced yesterday that they have acquired the license to the newest “BONES Studio” anime “Captain Earth“. Revolving around a young man who’s dream has always been to reach the stars like his father (an astronaut) once did, the series follows his journey from “seemingly normal boy” to “savior of the universe” as he discovers he has the ability to pilot a powerful “mech” that may just be the only defense force against the incoming extra terrestrial attacks.

Sentai-Filmworks-Logo-01

“Captain Earth” reunites a great deal of the crew who worked on another “BONES Studio” series “Star Driver”. The series began its air in Japan (and on “Crunchyroll”) on the 5th of April and is being streamed as part of the Spring anime season alongside series’ like “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders”, “Majine Bone” and “Black Bullet”. “Sentai Filmworks” have mentioned that they plan for a home video release but there has been no word as to when we can see that so stick to the site for any and all news as it is released.

ICEBERG INTERACTIVE HERALDS 4X STRATEGY TITLE ENDLESS LEGEND ON STEAM EARLY ACCESS

Watch the New Trailer and Play Amplitude Studios’ Follow-up to the Award-Winning Endless Space

Haarlem, The Netherlands – April 24, 2014 – Iceberg Interactive and award-winning indie studio Amplitude Studios herald the arrival today of the Alpha build of its gorgeous new 4X fantasy strategy game, Endless Legend, now available on Steam’s Early Access Program. Following 2012’s seminal 4X space-strategy title, Endless Space, Endless Legend is set in the same Endless universe, and offers players the chance to develop a fantasy civilization through seamless turn-based combat on the dying planet of Auriga. Players have the ability to pick one of eight beautifully crafted factions, thrust heroes into tactical battle using a variety of strategic terrain, develop technological and political power, and conquer the planet through diplomatic or military means.

Watch the new trailer on YouTube HERE: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IW_A_Q2WB0&list=UUZVeEavzrEZvLazxwKKTRiQ

“We have poured our hearts and souls into making Endless Legend,” said Romain De Waulbert, creative director, Amplitude Studios. “And we believe gamers familiar with Endless Space will see we’ve listened to their feedback and will enjoy the totally new seasoned approach we’ve taken.”

“With Endless Legend, Amplitude Studios continues to prove why it is a talented and remarkable studio,” said Erik Schreuder, CEO Iceberg Interactive. “Endless Legend is an enormous game with a distinct art style and incredible replay value, as demonstrated even in the Steam Early Access version.”

Endless Legend is a turn-based 4X fantasy strategy game that takes place on the planet Auriga, a once-beautiful planet destroyed in a massive cataclysm. Players build their nations through tactical, military, and political means on randomly generated, hexagonal worlds of varying altitudes with the ultimate goal of developing the most powerful civilization on the planet. Gamers will encounter long harsh seasons, assimilate smaller factions into the mix to increase their chances in war, fight battles with a variety of powerful heroes, and create a robust economy using Dust (money), food, production, science, and more.

  • Single or Multiplayer: Endless Legend takes place in the Endless Universe and employs new twists on combat, pacing, events, environment and single- and multiplayer gaming for one to eight players.
  • Eight fantastic, unconventional factions – including the Vaulters, Broken Lords, and the Wild Walkers – create a distinct take on the over-used ‘Tolkien-esque stereotypes.’ For the Alpha build, players can select three out of the eight factions and advance through the use of weaponry, technology, and other “Endless” elements, such as the Dust as per Endless Space.
  • Minor Factions: Of the 16 minor factions, 10 are currently available in the Alpha build for players to incorporate into their empire.
  • Research around 100 technologies across four eras through quests and research, while collecting Dust, luxuries, and strategic resources tradable at the marketplace.
  • Eight potential win scenarios for players experience through culture, trade and conquest. Example of a win: One enables your race to discover an ancient spaceship, leave the planet, and become and embryonic version of one of Endless Space’s galactic factions.
  • Endless Legend does away with skill trees with branching paths, instead enabling players to accumulate enough experience to advance to the next age without linear paths to follow.
  • Explore unknown territory by sending heroes into every corner of the world to find mysterious artifacts to equip troops.

The Classic Pack (currently on sale at $26.24) includes:

  • Endless Legend game- Instant access to the Alpha version and all versions including the release.
  • Official Digital Soundtrack (available at release)- All Endless Legend tracks created by FlybyNo in mp3 format.
