Overview

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-01

The Samaritan Paradox has been one of the more interesting point-and-click puzzle titles that I’ve had the pleasure of playing. Developed by Faravid Interactive and published by the same company that published The Cat Lady, Screen 7, The Samaritan Paradox is one title that you should not overlook on your list of purchases. The game is available on Steam for $9.99, and can be played on both the PC and Linux. If you’re interested in difficult yet rewarding challenges in the form of an unraveling puzzle, The Samaritan Paradox might be the title for you.

Story

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-02

In The Samaritan Paradox, you follow Ord Salomon, a troubled cryptologist in almost every facet of life. He’s a recent single, he makes no money, leading to late payments on his rent, and he can’t seem to find the topic he’s looking for due to a writer’s block for his thesis paper. His friend notices his troubles and seeks to break him out of his rut. Ord is known to be an exceptional cryptologist, but it gets in the way of his other goals. So to solve this little issue, his friend gives him a book to read, one written by a man who recently passed away. However, Ord finds a code within the first few pages of the title, and looks for the author’s daughter to see if it means anything to her. She shies away from the message and its possible meaning, but allows Ord to delve deeper into the mystery. What could it be that the deceased author wants his daughter to find so badly, and why is she trying to avoid it so badly?

Gameplay

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-04

The gameplay follows the rules of a basic point-and-click puzzle title. Clicking around the different rooms Ord passes through will provide different available actions, depending on the objective of your current level. Clicking on a chair might yield a message stating that it is a piece of Ikea furniture, or that you don’t think you need to sit down at the moment. Clicking on a statue might also yield a message stating that you should look deeper into it and how it may interact with other objects. The game leads you down the path to discovering the mysteries revolving around the book without giving away all the secrets. Surprisingly, I found the game a little difficult at times. Faravid Interactive certainly did us no favors by providing us with an easy game to complete. Players will have to truly think like a code-breaker and seek to put one plus one together. The games depth creates a very strong sense of mystery, and you can’t help but get sucked into the world that Ord Salomon lives in.

As I made my way through the level, I eventually took a pen and a piece of paper out of my drawers and decided to immerse myself into the world of Ord Salomon. Every time I found myself in front of a puzzle, I would start writing down what I needed to do, what I’ve stumbled upon so far, and how each item interacts with each other. Now of course, I only do that because I like to get into the heads of my characters and become them for a much more interesting experience, but not everyone will have that sort of method. The game has a way of bringing that side of me out into the open, and it’s been a while since I’ve played a puzzle game that’s led to me whipping out the old pen and paper.

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-03

While the gameplay and overall mechanics of the title are comfortable enough to handle for both first timers and hardcore puzzle enthusiasts, the characters are slightly under-developed. Each of the characters are introduced in a handful of words, or not at all. Some people don’t really mind the character’s background and history, but it makes a difference in the overall scheme of things. Also, one of the things that I found difficult to look past was the way the chapters progressed. In the beginning, the game was very well-structured, and it flowed very nicely, but as you made your way through the levels, it sort of tapered off and you left with a sour taste in your mouth as you tried to put pieces of the puzzle together with no success. I felt like it was difficult to fully understand at the end because of that, and honestly, it was almost a deal breaker for me. Other than that though, the game plays quite nicely and it still gave me about 8 to 9 hours of very enjoyable game time.

Visuals & Audio

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-05

The visuals are nothing spectacular, but it’s an ode to the past point-and-click titles. At times, I found the graphics to be perfectly fit for a game of this genre, because it handles the atmosphere and emotions invoked when playing a point-and-click puzzle so well. The voice-acting, however, was a bit hit and miss. Ord’s voice was done very professionally, and you could really tell what his personality and character was like. A mild-mannered cryptologist that could calm and deter a riot. The voice-actor for Ord was terrific, but I can’t say the same for some of the other characters. For example, Sara Bergwall, the daughter of the deceased writer Jonatan Bergwall, had bursts of enthusiastic and purposeful voice-acting, but it would quickly die back down and become a bit more inhibited. It certainly made it less appealing for me to listen to, but I put that behind me so that I could really get into the game.

Overall

The-Samaritan-Paradox-Screenshot-06

As a point-and-click title, The Samaritan Paradox is a completely worthwhile game to purchase, though certain players might be left with more than a little doubt by the time they reach the end. Puzzle enthusiasts should definitely check the game out. The journey towards the finale is a very entertaining and interesting one, and is more than able to make up for the slightly shoddy voice-acting and confusing conclusion. The puzzles are not easy in the least bit, and players will have to really think to solve any of the levels. I highly consider the game and would definitely recommend playing it for the challenge.

A call for help…

selector infected WIXOSS
Episode 7: That Girl’s Desire

I said it before and I’ll say it again, being a Selector sucks. It’s stressful, terrifying and as far as we know has had a 100% failure rate thus far. Sounds positively inviting doesn’t it? Though it took the destruction of a life close to hers, last episode saw Ruko crack under the pressure of Selector life. Though as much as it pains her, can she bring herself to leave it all behind?

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-7-02
If at first you don’t succeed, use a bigger weapon

No. If there’s one thing this episode does, it’s show us that despite all of the fear, all of the pain, all of the sadness, Ruko loves to battle…like a lot. Too much in fact. Unlike those who enjoy WIXOSS around her, Ruko’s love of battle is presented as an addiction. And a serious one at that. Just seeing other people playing the game is enough to make her anxious, causing her to seek out an opponent. Though we’ve all seen Ruko’s increasing love for battle, this is the first episode to outright state how relentless her desire is. Despite declaring multiple times that she’ll never battle again, she folds so quickly when Iona presses the issue. She doesn’t even agree to fight for justice or revenge or any particular reason, she just does, despite claiming she didn’t mean to. It’s honestly pretty sad to see her try to fight against her urge to battle and ultimately failing. This whole situation makes WIXOSS oddly analogous to drugs. Think about it. All the “cool” kids are doing it, they all think it’ll change their lives for the better and none of them truly understand the consequences of their actions. Of course it could just be an anime about vaguely defined card games and magic wishes, but my description sounds more philosophical doesn’t it?

This week also gives us a chance to learn a little more about Iona, the until now stoic and mysterious figure in the Selector world. Though she is indeed all of these things, she is also more like Ruko than you would expect. Sharing the same lust for battle as her, Iona explains to Ruko the rush of WIXOSS and how it provides an escape from her life. Not a bad life mind you, just not a good one. Apparently being average just wasn’t cutting it for the aspiring model. One similarity that I found interesting between the two Selectors was the LRIGs they carry. Though both appear to frail and pale girls, they possess and incredible thirst for combat and a personality that isn’t entirely what you’d expect. Granted that Uris is far more sadistic than Tama, both wish for nothing more than a strong opponent. Whether or not it is the LRIGs causing Iona and Ruko’s desire to fight is unclear at this point, after all the LRIGs could be manifestations of the girls themselves. Iona certainly lets Uris do most of the talking.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-7-03
Unsettling…

Another thing that I noticed about Iona/Uris and Ruko/Tama this episode is that they all distinctly declare they’re love for battle, as I’ve said countless times thus far. But they never once mention their love of victory. This is especially noticeable when Tama learns the word “forever”. In her childish simplicity, Tama says that she wishes to battle forever, a sentiment that nobody openly disagrees with. Which puts an even darker twist on an already dark representation of WIXOSS. Not only are they battling for no reason other than pure desire, they don’t even have an end goal. Honestly, how can you tell where someone stands if they have no true convictions?

One surprising factor of this episode was the reveal that Iona was the Selector who crushed poor Hitoe and destroyed her life. More than tat though, it was the reaction to this revelation that was surprising…in that there really wasn’t one. Sure Ruko started to get mad, but she was immediately cut of by Iona and asked to battle. This started a whole thread about wishes and lack of wishes and battles and love of battles, whilst poor Hitoe was kinda forgotten about. Though I guess when you really think about it, it loops back and supports the whole addiction theme. Both Ruko and Iona are so hungry for battle that they honestly forget about the outside world. Ruko herself says that in the heat of combat, everything else just fades away. I guess the series realises this, because they decide to throw in a scene of an emotionally broken Hitoe, just to remind us that she’s still an actual factor in the series.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-7-04
Aki-creepy…

So…Ruko huh? Not exactly the sweet, innocent girl she appears to be is she? Sure we’ve seen other characters doubt her motives, but this episode dove right into that subject and shattered the illusion entirely. Anyway, apparently everybody’s Aki-favourite character is still around despite her three  losses, somehow retaining her knowledge of the Selector world, something I’m sure we’ll learn about next episode. Same with that red, glowing scar…what’s that about? Oh yeah, Yuzuki also did some stuff this episode, WIXOSS stuff. She beat someone, so that’s good maybe…but seriously what’s up with Akira.

Veterans with extensive experience in the games industry, Casual Brothers was created as a new journey, as if we were starting from scratch in the world of downloadable games. We want to give a fresh, young and modern image, an online image. In this new beginning, Casual Brothers is like we use to be not so long ago, a bunch of guys working as a kind of garage band: no big offices, no big budget, no bosses; just a group of friends making what we believe and love: videogames. Our first title, Orc Attack, grew day-by-day, from a little casual game, hence our name of Casual Brothers, to something that we think is bigger and better, in part by chance, but above all, by every day’s hard work. HEAVY BULLETS UNLOADS THE CYLINDER INTO STEAM EARLY ACCESS

HEAVY BULLETS UNLOADS THE CYLINDER INTO STEAM EARLY ACCESS
– Don’t Forget to Reload –

São Paulo, Brazil – Through the dark art of video game publishing, Devolver Digital has teamed up with nom de plume Terri Vellimann and the surprisingly handsome musician Doseone (Samurai Gunn) to launch the procedurally generated FPS Heavy Bullets on Steam Early Access. The debut game from Brazilian developer Terri Vellimann is available now as a pretty damned polished beta and the community is invited to provide feedback and suggestions through the last two months of development. American musician/producer/rapper/gentleman Doseone is providing the score and sound design for Heavy Bullets and will be posting works in progress and streaming music sessions to give the community an insight into his process.

Heavy Bullets arms the player with a simple yet stylish revolver and six devastatingly plump bullets with the goal of resetting the security mainframe to restore order and reap the rewards of a job well done. To succeed in the game, players will need to move carefully and make smart use of their bullets, items, and the environment as rushing into new areas is the fastest way to get killed in the untamed wild of the neon corridors.

Starting in September 2013, developer Terri Vellmann launched the alpha version of Heavy Bullets on the TIGSource forums and has been updating the game based on feedback from a core group of players following the game. Now through the Steam Early Access period, Terri Vellmann will continue to integrate community feedback on gameplay, combat mechanics, and visual tweaks on a wider scale with a final launch planned for July 2014.
