EA’s 2015 E3 Presentation: The Complete Recap

ea-e3-01

Welcome to Capsule Computers live (or semi-live) recap of events with the 2015 E3 showing for EA. Below are the announcements as they occur, laced in some opinion as needed of course, so let’s get to it!

mass-effect-andromeda-logo

Right off the bat, Mass Effect: Andromeda is announced. That is quite a big way to start. There is a Holiday 2016 date as well, but the trailer doesn’t show much. This will be one of those trailers that people break down and hunt for clues on later, as it shows a few maps, planets, and so on. I will have to do some investigating myself later.

A talking suit comes out to get the show started, promising new IPs “unlike anything you would expect”, which then rolls into Need for Speed. I suppose the trailer looked good, but it did leave a bit to be desired as the guy who spoke afterwards hyped it up to be much bigger than what we saw in the clip. “The richest customization ever” should keep Need for Speed fans happy though. November 3rd everyone, because there is nothing coming out that month.

Also, what is with this newsticker showing times of announcements? EA, you’re not the Grammy’s.

need-for-speed-ea-01

Now we have Joe Dirt’s cousin and some female making no sense as we look at more Need for Speed and its customization options. We learned how colors change in this clip. From red to redder. Now we have official gameplay and the graphics are well done, but its basically Need for Speed with twitter capability (who checks Twitter in their car while racing?).

star-wars-knights-of-the-fallen-empire-01

Star Wars: The Old Republic is on stage. I haven’t heard that name in a good while. A new expansion is coming with new stories that have that “rich, Bioware storytelling”. Knights of the Fallen Empire is due out October 15th and is more than welcome. Good to see EA didn’t give up on it.

unravel-ea-e3-01.

Next up are the two original IPs, and I am kind of curious. Enter Unravel. So far we see an image of a yarn cat named…Yarny. This game was crafted to be deeper than your typical game, and is a puzzle/platformer. Unravel sounds interesting and I am listening but the guy on stage is shaking like a leaf. Buddy, if you blow this – your studio gets to visit that big Maxis in the sky. The trailer is shown and color me impressed. This game has a wonderful soundtrack and looks like a ton of fun.

Go ahead give it a watch:

Next we have…

plants-vs-zombies-e3-01Ok. Stop.

Back to business, Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is being detailed, explaining the plants are on the attack this time around. There is an evil villain attempting to build Zomburbia, and while the plants attacking the zombies is a bit odd, the story is slightly charming in a weird way.

Graveyard Ops is a new four-player co-op mode, and the Imp is detailed – showing off his chaotic stylings. SuperBrainz is a new melee class for the zombies, while Captain Deadbeard is a sniper class. Z-Mechs are also available for large enemy battles. The game looks well constructed and a lot like the first installment, but that really isn’t a bad thing. New Solo modes and split-screen have been added due to demand, and the “Free Content Updates” have me curious as EA and free are not words you typically use in a sentence together. Take a look at the newly revealed gameplay to see everything in action:

Remember PopCap? Just curious if anyone remembered.

nhl-16-ea-e3-01

Oh boy, NHL 16. Its hockey. I don’t know what to say except I enjoyed Mutant League Hockey. The standard sports titles are shown off, and it seems NBA Live 16 is out next.

nba-live-16-02

Thurfboart

Yep, EA are not giving up on this NBA property. The face scan feature is being tested – and Hoop Gawd (yes that is his moniker) is demoing the product. September 29th the game releases, and Game Face HD launches beforehand for mobile to allow players to easily scan their faces. You also up your swag from what EA tell us when you play the game, so there’s that. I love how they are talking about features that have been around since the Genesis, acting like it is new just because the last NBA title was a mess.

ea-watch-apple-01

EA Mobile is talking. 400,000 hours of gameplay. Apple Watch. That image above covers the conversation. Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes was also announced with tons of characters that reek of micro-transactions, and Minions Paradise is also announced. Sigh. Yes, EA are cashing in on Minions now. The crowd is so quiet. I really hate these types of games, and I dislike this guy trying to talk about shenanigans that Minions get into. I am sorry, dear reader. I just careth not.

fifa-pele-01

Now we have FIFA. Here is a very trailery trailer for FIFA 16. Out comes Pelé and the fans love their celebrity guest. He tells a story and we hear about moments as the EA rep tries to craft his stories into a promotion for FIFA 16. He seems nice, but this is rather boring and the rep gets him out of there after too much talking happens. I guess it is worth stating that female players are now in the game.

and HOW IS PELE STILL TALKING!

mirrors-edge-catalyst-01

The crowd cheers for Sara Jansen who is out to speak about Mirrors Edge: Catalyst. We finally see a bit of gameplay and get a look at the setting – with Gabriel Kruger being named as the main antagonist. There are also no levels, loading screens, or stops that are man-made. I can easily say that is a big deal and the highlight of this presentation. This trailer is also fantastic. February 23rd folks, mark that date!

Robert Flores is out speaking about Madden 16, explaining how the fantasy mode will be tied into the game. Its Madden and it has a lot of fluff right now due to the drawn out explanations, but I assure you, its Madden.

battlefront-ea-e3-01

What is better than Peter Moore? Peter Moore of course. He is out speaking about Star Wars: Battlefront. Frostbite, Frostbite, Battlefront, Frostbite. And now for the lovely Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir  to take the stage to talk about the game itself (no disrespect to her dialogue but she sounds so bored). After a lot of stills, we finally get to see the game itself. Actual multiplayer (as if there is another mode) for Battlefront). This is Battlefield.

I hate to sound negative, but I lived Battlefront I and II for years, and aside from the scenery and models, it seems like Battlefield. I am not saying its bad, I am just saying it doesn’t fit its namesake. It is Star Wars, but Battlefront? Eh, we shall see.

That is it! Not the worst show ever, just a very boring show with only a few highlights. November might have become an easier month on the EA front, but with Gamescom coming, we might be able to see better clips and coverage from EA.

Best of Show: Mirror’s Edge, Yarny and his humble developer, and Mass Effect: Andromeda

Worst of Show: Pele being shoved off the stage, The entire mobile section, and honestly – the Star Wars: Battlefront clip (remember folks, this is just my opinion).

Thanks for joining us and stay tuned for even more E3 2015 coverage!

Tom Clancy’s: The Division Release Date Accompanied by Backstabbing Gameplay

The-Division-Screenshot-10

Ubisoft had more of The Division to show off at their E3 2015 press conference and this time around it happened to focus on a team of players entering “The Dark Zone” which is a dangerous areas where players will not only have to worry about AI enemies but other players as well.

In the video you’ll see the team take down bad guys and steal items before heading to the extraction location. However before being extracted, the team kills a group of newcomers that were once allies all before one of the team members decides to leave the group and kill his wounded friends to take all of the loot for himself.

The presentation ended with the announcement that Tom Clancy’s: The Division will be released on March 8, 2016 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It is worth noting that a beta for The Division was also announced to go live on Xbox Live in December and will come to all platforms in early 2016. You can sign up for that beta here.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole Announced at E3

South-Park-The-Fractured-but-Whole-screenshot- (1)

Ubisoft came out swinging for their E3 2015 press conference by starting things off with the sequel to one of my favorite games last year in the form of South Park: The Fractured but Whole. This title will be a brand new RPG adventure that will feature everyone’s favorite South Park characters as they take on their super hero personas. This means that players will take on the role of a new kid once again while joining Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman in a new hilarious and outrageous RPG adventure.

Players will delve into the crime-ridden underbelly of South Park with Coon and Friends. This dedicated group of crime fighters was formed by Eric Cartman whose superhero alter-ego, The Coon, is half man, half raccoon. As the New Kid, players will join Mysterion, Toolshed, Human Kite, Mosquito, Mint Berry Crunch and a host of others to battle the forces of evil while Coon strives to make his team the most beloved superheroes in history.

Star Wars Battlefront Debut Gameplay Footage Features Hoth

star-wars-battlefront-screenshot-005

At the end of their E3 2015 press conference EA mercifully gave those who stuck around a little reward by debuting the first gameplay footage of Star Wars Battlefront. This footage was set on the planet of Hoth during the “Walker Assault” mode.

As the Empire, you must accompany AT-AT walkers as they march towards the Rebel base to destroy it. And as a Rebel, you must do everything you can to stop them. It was also revealed that Star Wars Battlefront will offer split-screen co-op with AI and one on one battles so you can play with friends however you like. You can check out the gameplay trailer below and as for the game, Star Wars Battlefront is currently set to be released on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 17th.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Release Date Set for February 2016

mirrors-edge-catalyst-screenshot-003

While EA’s E3 2015 press conference started out great, it became extremely tedious after a very short while to the point that some were actually happy that the Twitch stream died. That being said, there was a silver lining and that happened to be the few minutes they spent talking about Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will tell players Faith’s origin story as it follows her transition from a careless woman to the fierce heroine we know. The developers went on to say that the game will take place in an entire open world and feature no levels and no load screens. They closed their brief Mirror’s Edge Catalyst presentation out with announcing that the game will be released on February 23rd, 2016 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Announced for 2016

mass-effect-andromeda-logo

We have known for a bit that EA was working on a new Mass Effect title and the company kicked off their E3 2015 conference with something that was sure to hook viewers. They started with the newest game in the Mass Effect series but it won’t be called Mass Effect 4 like some thought, it will be called Mass Effect: Andromeda instead. Outside of the actual announcement of the game, the only other detail EA shared is that the title will be released during the holiday season in 2016 for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

While we may hear more about the game later, or not until next year, you can check out the reveal trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda below.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain E3 2015 Trailer Released

Metal-Gear-Solid-V-The-Phantom-Pain-TGS-screenshot- (13)

Konami has released a nearly six minute long trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in honor of E3 2015. The footage shows off plenty of brand new segments but gives us very few details on what exactly to expect, though you will definitely want to stick around to the end of the trailer for a certain reveal.

You can check out the video below and as for the game itself, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is currently set to be released on the Playtation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on September 1st and will be released on the PC on September 15th.

The Walking Dead: Michonne Mini-Series Announced by Telltale

the-walking-dead-michonne-screenshot-001

If you thought that Telltale Games already had enough on their plate then you will be surprised to hear that they are adding at least one more thing in the form of a three episode mini-series called The Walking Dead: Michonne. The story of the mini-series will take the Michonne from the comic book series and explores her untold journey during the time between issues #126 and #139 allowing players will discover what took Michonne away from Rick, Ezekiel, and the rest of her trusted group… and what brought her back.

The game will start being released this fall on PC/Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and compatible iOS and Android-based devices, though Telltale did note that the first episode of The Walking Dead: Season Two will be required to play the mini-series, but they went on to say that more info on that will be given closer to the title’s release.

Microsoft’s 2015 E3 Presentation: The Complete Recap

e3-recap-microsoft-01

Welcome to Capsule Computers live (or semi-live) recap of events with the 2015 E3 showing for Microsoft. Below are the announcements as they occur, laced in some opinion as needed of course, so let’s get to it!

halo-5-guardians-01

We start off with Bonnie Ross from 343 Industries opening the show. She seems friendly enough, and we are starting with Halo 5. We are getting a bit of gameplay footage with a bit of story with this one – which is pleasant to see.  The game looks like Halo of the past but with fantastic visuals. There isn’t a lot of exploration being done in this demo, as Master Chief is being pushed forward at a rapid pace. We shall see, I suppose. Decent demo. Josh Holmes takes the stage and talks about the “epic scale” of the narrative, and how it will blend into the multiplayer with Halo 5 Warzone. This reminds me of what Halo 4 tried, but I don’t know what to think of it yet. Guess it will be a wait and see in terms of longevity.

e3-ms-2015-01

Moving right along we have a brand new IP and wow those visuals are nice. Those titles just stated that it is made by Kenji Inafune, so I am already pumped. It is dubbed Recore and we don’t have a lot to go on, but it will be nice to learn more before the “Spring 2016” launch. Speaking of that, here comes Phil Spencer to remind us that it is exclusive. Thank you, as I didn’t see it at the bottom of the screen during the trailer in bold lettering.

There is a lot of talk from Phil Spencer about features and BAM! There is a bombshell. Xbox One will feature backwards compatibility. That is awesome and should definitely heat up sales without a doubt. A new guy is out explaining the feature…and its a download service of sorts where you simply transfer data by the looks of it. Mass Effect looks decent in the demo, and you can use all of the sharing features of the platform. This of course means you can take screenshots and stream.

The new Xbox Elite wireless controller is getting a bit of screentime. I really wish Microsoft would stop using the word “Elite”. Its a controller with customizations that do look nice, and that is about it. Read more about it here because I do not have time to speak about buttons.

fallout-4-e3-microsoft-01

Todd Howard from Bethesda takes the floor to speak about Fallout 4. They are calling this a gameplay reveal, but the Bethesda conference kind of showed us this already. I know people had problems with the graphics when we saw that first trailer, but it honestly looks great. Mods that are created on the PC will be able to be shared on the Xbox One at no cost. That is fantastic news and a big step in the right direction.

ea-access-01

Oh boy, its EA. The excitement is just stellar. EA Access for just $5 a month (he really wants you to know it!). Woo. You also get to play games beforehand. Again, woo. EA are now announcing Titanfall and Dragon Age: Inquisition will be hitting the service. EA Access will be available for free during this week to Gold members. Hmmm. I guess that is a nice trial.

forza-6-e3-microsoft-01

Now we are getting somewhere. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is now a thing. The trailer is a trailer, and we are now back to Microsoft promoting….Forza 6. Call me cynical but I just don’t care. There are too many Forza titles right now for such a new console. September 15th is the release date, however. Yay, cars.

A world premiere follows right after, and it certainly looks dark. That is because it is Dark Souls 3, which was expected. Following that clip is a new trailer for The Division. This game is finally coming together and I want to love what they have done with it since, but after Watch Dogs I would say its still a wait and see. The president of Ubi steps up to the stage to a cold ovation. There will be an exclusive beta later this year for the Xbox One, meaning 2016 is a more likely date for it. He is now promoting Rainbow Six: Siege, which will come with Vegas 1 and 2 for free as we roll into a trailer. I don’t know, I am just Ubi’d out and their conference has not even started yet. Maybe its because I am waiting for Beyond Good and Evil 2.

gigantic-e3-microsoft-02

A very colorful game has just appeared that will be on Windows 10 and Xbox One. It is a free-to-play title called Gigantic. Before you can blink comes a ton of Xbox Live titles and honestly, I can’t even keep up to type the name. There is like two seconds of footage per game – but there is Goat Simulator and like 20 other titles from what flashed by. I think I saw a new Army Men?

indie-xbox-logo-01

Speaking of indie games comes Tacoma from Fullbright games, which is kind of impressive, Ashen is also on the stage and has my attention. The character models seem to be made of wood based on the art style, and it seems to be a puzzle/adventure game. Rolling into Beyond Eyes from tiger and squid (that is a developer name). It seems to be about a little girl and the discoveries she has in her world as she appears to be blind behind her eyes as the models are fading in and out. That is out this summer. Cuphead – a new platformer is being shown now and it pulls off its 1930’s cartoon gimmickry well. In fact, I would say it looks amazing. A nice, swingy soundtrack to boot. I have to give it to Microsoft as they certainly stepped up their game – so to speak in this area of indies.

I want you all to take a gander at how awesome Cuphead is. Damn, this is marvelous.

Xbox Game Preview is another word for Steam Early Access, and I hate Early Access, so it can die. They do have a free trial, and that is an improvement, but I just cannot get behind the concept due to how poorly developers have utilized it on Steam.

There we are. Rise of the Tomb Raider has some gameplay and damn it is brilliant. A lot of the climbing mechanics look to be on par with the last game, but the little animations are far more detailed. Jona from the last title is also back, assiting during this section of gameplay. We also have a release window of “Holiday 2015”. Good luck not pushing that back.

rare-replay-logo-01

Holy shit! Its Perfect Dark! And Banjo! and Conker! A lot of Rare games being shown off. It seems like a collection of Rare titles is coming for just $30 and Viva Pinata, Conker, Banjo, and many more are on the disc. Rare Replay is set for an August 4th release date. That is outstanding! Craig Duncan comes out to speak about the collection (which has 10,000 gamerscore to be had), and we have a new announcement. The most ambitious, according to Duncan. The game seems to be a multiplayer title where players are pirates and go on adventures and have sea battles. We then see an official title, appropriately labeled Sea of Thieves.

sea-of-thieves-01

Next up we have Fable Legends is free to play, and coming this holiday. I can’t say I am impressed by this game as it looks colorful, but lacking of personality. Kudo is out speaking about Windows 10 and oculus and how an Xbox One controller will be released with the device. Microsoft Hololens is also seeing some promotion and Kudo is keeping the same cuecard expression as he reads off his excitement.

fable-legends-01

It seems I have also been pronouncing Mojang wrong for four years as well. Learn something new everyday.

This girl. Is speaking about. Minecraft. And pausing after. Two to Three. Words. Minecraft is coming to Hololens. The demo is honestly quite interesting as the game interacts with you voice and more. I can say this could be big if it is executed right, as the ability to put the world on a surface seems like something out of a futuristic film. Very nice stuff here and a big step in the virtual reality market. I can’t really put it into words, so here is a video that was magically edited in because of magic:

Gears of War Ultimate Edition has been announced. A new Gears of War title is also being shown, with a gameplay demo taking place. It honestly reminds me more of The Last of Us than Gears, but it does look good. The title is of course – Gears 4.

gears-4-logo

Phil Spencer is back on stage rocking his Rare shirt, which makes me a bit happy. I am honestly surprised there hasn’t been a Call of Duty trailer, so maybe Sony will do that honor. It seems we are at the close with a stellar video package. I have to say that Microsoft did really well this year as they seemed to listen to their fans. They also had a lot of great titles to show off and aside from the fact that it is the same ol’ group of sequels, I am very impressed on how enjoyable the show was to watch as a whole. That is a wrap!

Best of Show: Gears 4, Rare Replay, and BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY!

Worst of Show: Ubisoft speaking, EA acting like people still play Titanfall. Fable Legends is also a bit sad to look at due to its free-to play nature.

Thanks for joining us and stay tuned for even more E3 2015 coverage!
