Overview

The year is 2110. Humanity has begun exploring space and experimenting with ways to adapt the human body to the environment of outer space. Earth ends up at war with an alien species known as the Wulgaru for an unknown reason. Team Rabbits is a group of genetically enhanced children who are being trained to fight in the war against the Wulgaru. Toshikazu Asagi, Kei Kugumiya, Tamaki Irie, Ataru Suruga and Izuru Hitachi are the members of Team Rabbits, which is also commonly known as the Fail Five. Their teamwork is greatly lacking at first, but they eventually become close to each other and develop both as individuals and as a team. They slowly learn how to pilot their mecha suits, but almost lose their new identities and their lives in the process.

Story

It comes as no surprise that Majestic Prince is an unoriginal series based on its premise. Some unoriginal ideas used in this series include: genetically enhanced children, a mecha suit that fuses with the pilot’s DNA and an enemy race that looks suspiciously similar to humans. The idea of genetically enhancing children in order to prepare them for piloting mecha is disturbing, but not original. On this version of Earth, children are taken from their parents/guardians at the age of 12 and have their memories erased. Essentially, they are raised and ‘enhanced’ for militaristic purposes. They have to develop new identities, but some begin to seriously question their existence as a result of this process. The actual process of genetically enhancing the children is not shown, but it is a particularly disturbing idea nonetheless. That the humans turn out to be the distant ancestors of the Wulgaru is not terribly surprising. The lack of surprises in this series goes to show just how stale the genre is at this point, and how little effort has been put into making this series stand out.

Majestic-Prince-Screenshot-01

The Wulgaru think of themselves as superior to the humans. They are only interested in advancing their own society; the majority of them could not care less about the other races that have evolved from their gene pool. Prince Jiart, the brother of the king of the Wulgaru, is depicted as particularly lustful and barbaric. His evilness extends as far as raping a Wulgaru woman, one of his own kind. He then immediately has sex with a colleague of his, a high-ranking person who, for some reason, has no problem sexually objectifying herself. Considering that mecha series are almost always set in the future, it makes no sense that these series continually present despicable and downright evil men and fail to promote gender equality at all. The author of the original manga clearly did not care about the potential female audience. Not just for the aforementioned reason either, but also because Tamaki and Kei are poorly developed characters. Tamaki is always going on about guys and pickled squid guts and Kei is constantly baking suspicious-looking cakes that always have far too much sugar in them. There are some hints at romantic feelings between some characters, and there are some emotional moments later on in the series, but the characterisation itself is disappointingly weak. Suruga provides some entertainment with his incredible knowledge of weaponry, but Asagi’s constant upset stomach should not be the most noteworthy element of his character during the first half of the series. Izuru’s wish to be a hero is understandable, but still generic. It is difficult to become invested in any part of the series. What could have been a sad and moving moment in the second half of the series instead ends up being a generic plot point that is entirely predictable. The series could have been better if it depicted the events that occur after the war with the Wulgaru ends, although this problem may be rectified when the new OVA episode and film are released.

Visuals

The visuals are almost entirely unimpressive. When a mecha series has bad animation, something is very wrong. There is a heavy reliance on 3D CGI, but most Japanese studios except Square Enix have yet to master the use of 3D CGI in anime. The textures look cheap, unrealistic and outdated. Furthermore, as is common with this type of animation, frames are missing from most sequences featuring 3D animation. This is intentional, but it shuddering animation simply does not look good. It is hard enough to enter a sense of disbelief while watching this series, and this consistent problem with Japanese 3D animation does not help at all. The 2D animation is average, but not bad. The action scenes are extremely fast paced, so much so that it becomes hard to follow what is happening at times. There is surprisingly little blood, but there is a small amount of blood present in a few shots towards the climax of the war. There is not one element of the animation that stands out in a positive way, making it worse that there are several attempts at ‘fan-service’ throughout the series. Tamaki has unnaturally large breasts; they bounce around frequently, and, realistically, are probably causing her enormous back pains. The different level of gravity in outer space cannot be used as a defence for this either, seeing as this problem is also present when she is on Earth. The same problem exists with Reika Saionji, the head mechanic of Team Rabbits, as well as other characters who wear revealing clothes even in cold settings.

Majestic-Prince-Screenshot-03

Audio

The voice acting in the English dub ranges from average to slightly above average. The adult characters sound believable. The voice actors of the children give a reasonably convincing performance too, but Monica Rial is once again an annoyingly bad choice for a child character. It is impossible to believe her performance as Tamaki purely because her voice sounds nothing like a 15-year-old’s voice. This is not the only problem with the English dub, unfortunately. There are several missing lines of dialogue throughout the series. To find out what these lines were, the English subtitles should be turned on. Unfortunately, having the subtitles on while listening to the English dub reveals another problem. That problem is the inappropriate translation of elements the original script. The most noticeable instance is the use of the word ‘have’ instead of ‘rape’, the latter being the translation used for the subtitles. The meanings of other statements are altered too, so it is not recommended to listen to the English audio track unless you absolutely have to watch anime with English-dubbed audio. The background music is slightly above average. It is fitting, but does not stand out in any other way. The theme songs are below average.

Majestic-Prince-Screenshot-04

Extras

The Japanese promotional videos and the textless opening and ending animations are supposed to be included as extras. However, they are not present on any of the discs. The information on the back of the box suggests that they should be on one of the discs, but the individual package details for Parts One and Two do not support this.

Overall

It takes a few episodes for the story to start making sense, which is not a good way for an anime series to start. There are just a couple of episodes that really bring the series down to the point of being unwatchable, but even considered as a whole, Majestic Prince could have been a lot better. The personality ‘traits’ given to the main characters make it difficult to develop an emotional attachment to any of the characters. The poor use of characterisation in anime and manga is by no means a new problem, but it is a shame that the characters and just about every element of the plot end up being as generic as it gets for a mecha series. It is not the worst series to spend ten hours watching, but it does not stand out in any positive way.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Prologue Gets E3 Trailer & Release Window

Kingdom-Hearts-HD-2-8-Final-Chapter-Prologue-screenshot-01

Kingdom Hearts III is perhaps one of the most anticipated titles of this generation but unfortunately it’s still a fair ways off from being in our hands. To tide us over, Square Enix is bringing us the sort of third ‘remastered’ Kingdom Hearts game titled Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and just a week shy of E3 a new trailer has been released in multiple languages including English which you can view embedded below.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (or KHHD2.8FCP… I’ll just call it 2.8) includes two playable games and a cinematic retelling. The first playable game is a remaster of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance which originally released for the Nintendo 3DS back in March 2012. The second game is an all new adventure called Birth By Sleep 0.2 – A Fragmentary Passage and features Aqua as the playable character. The trailer also gives us a brief glimpse at what may be Terra, who was last seen being lost to the darkness in Birth By Sleep.

Kingdom-Hearts-HD-2-8-Final-Chapter-Prologue-screenshot-06

Lastly, Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover contains cinematics based on the mobile version of what was originally a browser based game in Kingdom Hearts Unchained X (pronounced chi). This story predates all games that have been released before and tells the tale of the Foretellers, which seem to have some connection to the zodiac with each member representing an animal. In a separate announcement, the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter announced the mobile version will be coming to both iOS and Android in Europe (and maybe Australia) in the near future. The game is already available in North America and Japan.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 will be releasing worldwide in December of this year so we don’t have to wait too long to get a first hand glimpse of how beautiful Kingdom Hearts III will look like as both Back Cover and Birth By Sleep 0.2 will be using the same engine as that game. Speaking of KH III, at the very end of the trailer it says to expect more information this U.S. winter (Dec, Jan, Feb). Don’t forget to check out the trailer for yourself below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

SYDNEY, 9TH June 2016 – Open Bionics, the award-winning robotics start-up, Eidos®-Montréal, the award-winning video game studio that is the home of the Deus Ex® franchise and Razer, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced that they will be working together to bring Deus Ex inspired augmentations to life. The three companies will partner up to help bridge the gap between fiction and reality, working together to design, 3D print, scan, power, and create affordable bionic hands. This “Augmented Future” initiative will combine the expertise of each company, with the ultimate goal being to make fashionable robotic prosthesis accessible to a larger audience.

The Deus Ex Universe® depicts a near future where human beings are equipped with prosthetics that give them enhanced capabilities. Although being a fantasy world, the Deus Ex Universe is recognized for being at the forefront of the discussions on transhumanism and bionic augmentations. Eidos-Montréal’s team of artists are striving to create state of the art designs inspired by this universe and the characters within it. Adam Jensen, the main protagonist in the series, was a particular source of inspiration when creating the designs for both The Titan Arm and The Adam Arm prostheses. These, and other prostheses, will soon be available for everyone, from adults to kids of all ages, with models being created for both boys and girls. Eidos-Montréal and Open Bionics are providing these blueprints and designs royalty free, granting anyone the ability to access and use them whenever they wish.

Open Bionics will devote its team of experts to bring these models to life, using the latest technology in 3D printing to create unique prostheses. “Working with Deus Ex to re-imagine the future of bionic prosthetics has been a fantastic creative process. It is has been made even better by seeing people wear the bionic arms and get so much enjoyment out of it. This collaboration goes to show how bright the future of bionics is. We feel lucky to have been able to work with the design team at Deus Ex. They’ve been incredibly generous with their time and ideas throughout this project. We’re excited to see this relationship continue to grow” said Joel Gibbard, CEO at Open Bionics.

The Razer “Stargazer” camera and a motion tracking technology will help to bring this bionic arm initiative to a virtual setting, allowing people to digitally ‘try on’ the arm at events, effectively enabling a real-time demonstration of how the arm would look and move if it they were actually using it. “We’re excited to contribute to this incredible partnership with the Razer Stargazer. As the world’s most advanced webcam, it is a precise hand tracking solution that allows everyone to experience first-hand the future of augmentations,” said Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan.

Releasing in 2017, the bionic arms will be available for viewing at multiple events, including E3 and Gamescom. More information on www.augmentedfuture.com

New Dragon Ball Super Trailer for Future Trunks Arc Released

Dragon-Ball-Super-Screenshot-02

The hype for this Future Trunks arc of Dragon Ball Super has been around for a month or so now but it’s really reaching the peak just a few days out from the first episode of the arc airing this Sunday in Japan. The YouTube channel for Dragon Ball Heroes, a Japanese only card game, has released a brand new trailer promoting the arc.

It mostly shows footage you may have seen in last episodes stinger and next episode preview, but there are some new shots to look at here including some clearer images of the enemy ‘Black’ who appears as various forms of shadows in the trailer and some more shots of Mai and Trunks together.

Dragon-Ball-Super-Screenshot-01

Check out the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think is going to happen in this first episode of Super’s latest arc. Personally, I’m feeling that Trunks is unfortunately not going to be able to rescue his mother from meeting her end at the hands of Black which will surely be a huge emotional scene as Trunks barely has anyone in his future world. I don’t know but I do I am excited as hell to watch this when it airs.

GTA Online: Further Adventures in Finance and Felony Now Available

grand-theft-auto-v-screenshot-045

It’s finally here, possibly the biggest update to GTA: Online so far is live. “Further Adventures in Finance and Felony” introduces the option of starting up your own company for buying and selling illegal goods. CEOs will need to purchase an executive office to get the ball rolling. SecuroServe Special Cargo Network will get players in touch with everything they need to run their company: a black market for buying and selling illegal goods and purchasable warehouses to store their ill-gotten gains.

grand-theft-auto-v-screenshot-047

In addition to the new corporate content, some new jobs and challenges have been added for Grand Theft Auto VIPs. Three new jobs and two new challenges will help fund black market purchases or new toys. Speaking of new toys, some new vehicles are being added alongside the previously announced Pegassi Reaper. The HVY Brickade is a armoured transport vehicle on steroids while the Bravado Rumpo Custom is a little more of a low key transport vehicle. Of course if you are looking for some wheels for pleasure instead of work, there are some brand new sports cars at Legendary Motorsport, too.

grand-theft-auto-v-screenshot-046

Rockstar has also added a brand new Adversary Mode. There are two teams, the winners and the losers. The only way for the losers to win is to kill a member of the winning team and swap places with him. Those who play the new mode this week will be rewarded with double RP.
