Electronic Arts has announced that they are planning on officially revealing Star Wars Battlefront II during “The Galaxywide Premiere of Star Wars Battlefront II” panel at the Star Wars Celebration Orlando. This event will be held on April 15th and the panel will be at 2:30PM ET/11:30AM PT.
The company went on to say that the panel will feature developers from DICE, Criterion and Motive to show off a small glimpse of the game as well as a debut trailer. Since very few fans will be able to attend the event compared to the overall number of actual fans, the event will also be broadcast online.
After a fairly long wait it seems like Activision and Bungie are prepared to give us some new information for Destiny 2. With a teaser image as well as a new one minute long teaser trailer that is simply titled “Last Call” we now know that the company is planning on giving us the full reveal later today.
While we know very little about the game other than the trailer, found below, it has revealed that there will still be timed exclusive content for the PlayStation 4 version of the game that will last until fall 2018 where, if it is anything like the original game, will be rather thin by that point.
Nearly everyone has been to an amusement park sometime in their life. Whether it was a big name that has parks all over the country or an independent mom and pop organization with a smaller focus, many of us enjoyed a theme park in some form. Eventually we learned the reality of these magical places but what if there happened to be a theme park where that magic was real and their visitor’s happiness was their lifeline. Well you have Amagi Brilliant Park and now that the anime has been released in the West, is it worth trying out?
Story
Seiya Kanie might be a narcissistic perfectionist who thinks he can do no wrong but even he knows better than to turn down an invitation from a girl wielding a strange flintlock she pulled from under her skirt. Even if this girl happens to be a recent transfer student who wants to take him to an amusement park named Amagi Brilliant Park. With Isuzu Sento pulling him along with her dry attitude he travels through what can only be described as a destitute amusement park that has clearly seen better days.
With most attractions either too lame, extreme, or fallen into complete disrepair and many of their employees appearing to have completely checked out of reality Kanie ends up furious by the time his strange visit to the park comes to an end. With only a delightful snack appearing to be the selling point, he manages to meet with the manager of the park, a young girl by the name of Latifah. While this may seem like your average park fallen on hard times, things begin to take a unique twist when it is revealed that this young girl is actually a real princess and that the Amagi Brilliant Park is in fact home to magical creatures who have left their homeland.
Initially skeptical but quickly convinced otherwise, Kanie learns that the park has fallen into such disrepair that they’ve failed to reach 500,000 visitors for three years in a row and if they don’t manage to reach that number this year then they will be forced to shut down. What would normally be a simple change of occupation for some would result in the death of nearly everyone in the park as their magical realm, Maple Land, used to provide them with the happy energy they needed to survive but without it their only source has come from the people visiting the park. With no more park, they will simply begin to disappear and it is up to Seiya to use his skills to bring in an extra 250,000 visitors in three months as their newly appointed park manager.
One of the most interesting aspects of Amagi Brilliant Park is that it manages to combine fantasy elements and slice of life development together in a nearly flawless manner. While many series may lose time trying to introduce various characters or solve small problems while sacrificing development of the core storyline, this series manages to do both at the same time as nearly every action that the characters make ends up helping the park in some form. Whether it is introducing us to new characters that end up pulling their weight more in the park or developing new ideas for ways to attract customers, both of these work together to create an interesting series to watch.
This is helped immensely by how amusing the cast of characters is. Kanie comes off as a jerk with great ideas but he also grows to care for his fellow workers even if he tends to not show it. Latifah plays a smaller role for most of the series due to her fragile nature though as one would expect, the series’ core storyline relies heavily on her sickness during the final episodes as we learn more about the reason the park was built and why she appears so young.
The main characters that tend to interact with Kanie though tend to be the blunt Isuzu who rarely speaks her mind outside of one development where she’s afraid to share too much and three mascot characters that are almost always able to make you smile simply due to how out of character they are with their appearances. Whether it is the pink cat with a perverted nature who likes explosives, a lazy sheep with a temper, or the most stand out character who hates being called a knock-off, a mouse who will appear quite familiar to fans of the Full Metal Panic series.
Thanks to this collection of characters as well as plenty of others, including the Elementario Fairies, and the way the story is handled viewers will be quite delighted with what Amagi Brilliant Park has to offer. It is worth noting that although the series’ core story does come to a conclusion on the twelfth episode, the thirteenth episode does continue the story a bit in more of a side manner, making for a fairly odd feeling conclusion but this does little to dampen the entertaining combination that is this series.
Visuals
It is quite evident that when Kyoto Animation began working on Amagi Brilliant Park that they made sure to put their best foot forward in an attempt to convey just how downtrodden the park really is. The first impressions of the falling apart park help set the bar for the changes that are made over the course of the series as we continue to see improvements made in the background.
The other aspect comes in the form of the character designs. With bright and colorful designs that are nicely detailed with quite a number of unique looking characters, especially in the forms of the park mascots, you’ll always be eager to see what will happen next thanks to these designs. It is interesting to note that there is a bit of fan-service in this series but it is kept fairly tame or is poked fun at by the more lascivious characters being punished.
Audio
Sentai Filmworks has made sure to provide both the original Japanese voice track as well as their freshly recorded English voice track for viewers to choose between. The English voice cast does an amazing job here with their characters though a few of the singing segments do sound a bit off in the English version when compared to the Japanese track. That being said, other than these few moments though the English voice work is exceptionally well handled in this release.
The soundtrack throughout the series is fairly standard in nature outside of the aforementioned insert songs that are performed by the characters. The opening theme “Extra Magic Hour” by Akino with bless4 is a great opening track for the series and is a delightful song to listen to and as for the ending theme we have “Elementario de Aimasho” performed by the Japanese voice actors for the four Elemental fairies and this theme song serves the series well with a satisfying light-rock closing that touches upon each of the elements of the girls.
Extras
The standard version of Amagi Brilliant Park comes with the special English version of the “Extra Magic” opening theme performed by the original singer, clean versions of the standard opening and ending theme, trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases, and finally an OVA that was released after the series concluded. This OVA touches upon Isuzu’s feelings a bit as she works to provide Seiya with a fitting gift for his birthday.
Overall
With a collection of great characters and a unique theme that manages to combine fantasy and slice-of-life elements in such an entertaining manner fans of both genre will appreciate what Amagi Brilliant Park has to offer. With some great production values and memorable themes, this anime series may not delve too deep into some aspects of the fantasy realm but it does deliver in nearly every other aspect.
Osamu Tezuka is widely considered one of the founders of the manga industry as he created numerous classic series that have been revisited numerous times. This includes incredibly popular series such as Astro Boy and Black Jack, with the latter receiving a prequel series in recent years. With the character and series Black Jack being familiar for many fans in the industry, we knew little about the characters early days before becoming the underground surgeon and that what Young Black Jack is meant to cover. So now that the series has been released in the West, is it worth picking up?
Story
Long before Kuroo Hazama took on the name of Black Jack he was once a medical student during one of the most disruptive times in history. Set during 1968 and the following years, the Vietnam war is in full swing and while people have begun protesting for change around the world, Japan is just getting started with its own people protesting and seeking better conditions. As such the majority of the students that he would be working with have begun rebelling against the standard practices held by the old guard in the hospital but unlike them, Hazama would rather study and refine his skills as a surgeon.
While this does little to earn him many friends, his first real case comes at him fast and immediately exposes the risks of falling back on old ways. After a terrible train crash leaves many patients injured, a young boy with severed limbs is immediately discarded by an older doctor who prescribes amputation as the only method. Knowing that there is a better way, Hazama steps beyond his position as a student to take on the patient and reattach his limbs. Despite his eventual success, he is shocked by the poor nature of almost everyone around him thanks to his superior writing the child off as someone who could barely be saved and the fact that the parents of the child eventually resort to blackmail to pass off the majority of the surgery fees.
This isn’t the only time that the dark nature of the medical world or the scummy side of humanity is exposed in Young Black Jack but one would have had to ask for some better pacing in this series. Throughout this twelve episode season viewers are treated to a series that takes a bit to establish itself by dipping its toes into the societal ills in the world as well as the problems directly affecting Hazama before diving into multiple three episode long mini-arcs that use history as a backdrop.
This includes follow Hazama as he travels to Vietnam only to be captured and have to deal with the issues of both being a prisoner of war as well as soldiers who are struggling to not only survive the war, but determine just what is right and wrong. A brief trip to Chicago where racial divide continues to play a major role in society after the death of Martin Luther King Jr. that not only touches upon those issues but also the dark side of science and humanity, before bringing itself to another three episode arc only to end on a rather bland note in yet another one-off episode that does little to really establish Hazama as Black Jack other than simply saying that he would eventually go on to take a different path than most doctors.
By utilizing historic backdrops we see a number of unique storylines that throw Hazama into the middle of a social and political divide where he witnesses the horrors that humanity can inflict on one another both through prejudice and the corrupt side of medicine. While these set-ups work well in context, the actual execution for most of these events is flawed primarily due to the complete lackadaisical effect that most events play out for Hazama.
Rarely are we given a look beneath his calm exterior to see that things are actually deeply affecting his outlook on the course of medicine. In fact on more than a few occasions he reacts completely emotionless, something that doesn’t really pan out when compared to the Black Jack that fans eventually know him to be. This combined with the lackluster finish for this anime season, leads to a bit of a divide between what fans of the classic series expect and how things are left off.
Visuals
Although adapted from a 2011 manga series, the series took clear inspiration from the designs of characters from Tezuka’s works. This means that many character designs have the same clear distinct appearances that one would expect of Tezuka’s classic works. This means that many key characters are rather nicely designed and feature great expressions, though Hazama does feel a bit too stilted at times with his almost complete lack of interest in most events that occur around him.
It is also worth noting that despite being a series that features a large number of surgeries and scenes that take place during the Vietnam war, there is very little blood or gore involved and while surgery is shown quite often, viewers are presented with a side-view of the action or simple highlights of Hazama’s sewing and surgery techniques against a simple background, making for an appealing but overly simplistic artistic choice.
Audio
This release of Young Black Jack only offers the original Japanese voice track accompanied by English subtitles. For the most part this works well enough though considering the number of American characters that appear and certain scenes, it is rather surprising that an English dub wasn’t provided. That being said the Japanese voice cast works well enough though viewers will need to keep up with the subtitles during operating scenes if they aren’t familiar with medical series.
The soundtrack for the series is fairly standard fair for a series such as this with a mix of dramatic and heavier tunes used during operations and darker scenes. As for the opening theme for the series, it is titled “I am Just Feeling Alive” by Umi Kuun and is rather upbeat and catchy to listen to, albeit not exactly the type of song that one would expect from the series. The ending theme is “All Categorize” by Takuto and is more toned down to the point of being too simplistic in nature.
Extras
The only real bonus content included in this release come in the form of clean versions of the opening and ending themes as well as some trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases.
Overall
For the most part the series works well enough as a medical drama that tells a number of stories featuring surgeries of many kinds in numerous environments but those expecting to see Hazama’s reactions to these events will be rather disappointed. Young Black Jack sets itself up as a prequel to an extremely familiar character for fans of Osamu Tezuka’s works and while it does a great job using historical backdrops and conflicts to place the lead character in areas that would work well to mold him into the doctor fans know he becomes, his lack of reaction and often missing tension during most story arcs will leave fans of the series unsatisfied.
XSEED Games and PQube have announced that they now have a set release date for Akiba’s Beat in North America and Europe with the game arriving on May 16th and May 19th respectively for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. To go along with this announcement they have released a new story trailer as well as some new story details.
With dual audio support offering both the English and Japanese voice track for over 22,000 spoken lines Akiba’s Beat follows the story of Asahi Tachibana, a textbook NEET, living a lazy, cozy life in Akihabara, the infamous Tokyo suburb renowned for its proliferation of anime and video game merchandise, maid cafes, pop idols, and all other forms of counterculture indulgence. To him, every day is Sunday, and every Sunday is a fun day. Little does he know, however, that every day is about to become Sunday for real.
Caught in a temporal loop, where the day restarts as soon as it ends, Asahi is one of only a chosen few whose memories don’t reset with it. He and his merry band of time-displaced losers must now scour Akihabara for signs of “delusions” – people’s innermost fantasies made manifest, changing the cityscape and the behavior of its citizens alike. It is the duty of this ragtag team (whether they like it or not) to infiltrate and destroy these delusions, restoring the natural order of Akiba in the vain hope that this loop may be their last.
