Sydney – Monday 5 June, 2017. The Sydney Opera House will host Australia’s first Minecraft competition in the Concert Hall on July 2 and 3. “Minecraft at the Sydney Opera House” brings to life one of the best-selling video games of all time, its 120 million-plus players captivated by a world of limitless exploration and creative possibilities.

Minecraft’s first Australian festival will invite fans of the game to dig (mine) and build (craft) anything and everything, from castles and farms to the Sydney Opera House itself. A true choose-your-own-adventure experience, the festival will be unbeatable school holidays entertainment for children, families, and Minecraft devotees of all ages.

This event is about bringing Minecrafters together to share ideas, challenge each other and to meet the creators of one of the world’s most popular games. The Opera House’s grand Concert Hall and Northern Foyers will be transformed into a Minecraft extravaganza spanning three sessions over two days. Attendees can come and go between the main competition on stage and the activities in the foyer.

Minecraft at the Sydney Opera House is designed for everyone: from dedicated players of all ages – who can compete to win an Xbox One – to parents and educators who can understand and unpack how the game can be applied in an educational setting – and even younger siblings who can meet – and challenge – new friends.

Alongside the competitions, Lead Creative Designer of Minecraft, Jens Bergensten, will participate in the interactive sessions. Lydia Winters, Brand Director of Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, will share her Minecraft tricks and tips and answer fans’ questions.

Need for Speed Payback Announced for PC, PS4, and Xbox One

EA and Ghost Games announced that Need for Speed Payback will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows on November 10th. The new Need for Speed game is set in the fictional city of Fortune Valley, a city inspired by Las Vegas. Players will be able to live out their The Fast and The Furious fantasies in the game’s story mode that follows the story of three characters: Tyler the racer, Mac the showman, and Jess the wheelman. Each character is looking to even the score with The House, a cartel of casino owners that run Fortune Valley.

Need for Speed Payback will feature a wide variety of missions, such as heists and car battles. Ghost Games is boasting that Need for Speed Payback features the deepest car customization system in the entire Need for Speed franchise. Players will be able to tune even the most humble lemon into a high speed supercar with the system.

EA also announced the Deluxe Edition and pre-order bonuses for Need for Speed Payback today. Those who opt to buy the Deluxe Edition will also get a special license plate and NOS colour, in-game discounts, and reputation bonuses. Pre-orders will come with the “Platinum Car Pack” that comes with an exclusive platinum blue tire smoke and the following five vehicles:

Xbox Games Pass Now Live with a 100+ Titles

Microsoft’s monthly subscription service Xbox Games Pass is now live for all Xbox One owners in 31 countries. The program has been in beta testing with Xbox Insiders since March. While the testing phase consisted of a small library of games, Xbox Games Pass is rolling out with a library of over 100 Xbox 360 and Xbox One games. Members can download any of these games to their Xbox One and have unlimited access both on and offline for a monthly fee of $9.99 USD/$10.95 AUD. The current library of games can be found at the official mini-site and features a mix of both AAA titles and small indie games. Microsoft has announced plans on adding games each month to the library.

Xbox Games Pass members will also get a 20% discount an Xbox One game purchase and 10% discount on DLC purchases of all games that are currently in the Xbox Games Pass library. To celebrate the launch, Microsoft is offering a free 14 day trial.

Steam Direct Fee Structure and Upcoming Steam Store Updates Announced

Developers have been anxiously awaiting new details since Valve announced they would be scrapping Steam Greenlight and revamping Steam Trading Card in hopes of cutting down the number of shovelware and asset flip titles. Today, Valve released new details in a blog post about the upcoming Steam Direct program that will replace Steam Greenlight.

Valve proposed that developers would pay an initial fee of $100-5000 USD to get their game onto Steam which then would be repaid back to the developer as the developer sold copies of their game. While Valve originally planned to go with a $500 fee, they have now opted for a lower $100 fee to ensure small developers will be able to afford the fee upfront. The lower fee is especially important for developers consisting of only a single individual from countries with weaker currencies like Russia or India, as coming up with $500 USD may not be realistic.

Valve also revealed some upcoming changes planned for the Steam storefront. They are continuing with their emphasis on the Steam algorithm to find PC games they think buyers will enjoy. Valve is also looking to find ways to use more human feedback to shape the suggestions the algorithm provides. This may come to a disappointment to some who were looking for the return of a focus on newly released titles.

Finally, Steam Curators will be seeing some new features in the near future based on feedback. Valve plans on providing Steam Curators with more tools to share information about the game, such as allowing embedded YouTube videos. Curators will also be able to create custom lists of games. For example, the system will allow curators to create one list for all recommended games and a second list for interesting fantasy games. Valve is also looking at creating a system that will get Steam Curators in touch with game developers to give them pre-release access to games in hopes of raising awareness for new titles. There is no word when this system will go live, but it is definitely on the to do list.

Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

[Platform: PlayStation®4 and Windows PC; Release: 2018] – Developed by Edelweiss, the talented indie team behind the acclaimed shoot-’em-up Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a side-scrolling action platformer inspired by Japanese mythology that breaks up the action with rice growing sim gameplay. The approach is simple and fun – similar to tennis, players serve up balls but instead of striking them with rackets, they shoot the balls with guns, rocketing them high into the air. Using this unique yet intuitive mechanic, competitors are placed in the center of 3D arenas surrounded by screaming fans where they participate in timed rounds with the main objective of shooting balls into goal rings for points, accumulating the highest score possible before time expires. Depending on which moves work best, players can pick up balls, dribble balls by bouncing them off the ground and catching them for a second before throwing balls in the air to be shot. 

Gunball is an easy game to pick up and play, making it the perfect first-time experience for players new to VR. However even seasoned VR pros will find Gunball to be deep and intense, allowing players to immerse themselves in the experience and pull off insane trick shots on the way to racking up the highest scores in the world! Fans of competitive sports will find themselves vying for the best scores, to earn the title of best Gunball player.

The game features two themed environments – an audience packed sports stadium and an explosive rainbow volcano – each with five different goal ring layouts featuring varying obstacles per environment. Compete against friends and other Gunballers around the world to achieve top ranks on the Steam leaderboards!
