LIONSGATE ANNOUNCES LANDMARK PARTNERSHIP WITH OVERWATCH LEAGUE™ CLUB LOS ANGELES VALIANT TO PROMOTE STARZ ORIGINAL SERIES ASH VS EVIL DEAD

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 22, 2018) – Global content leader Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B) today announced a partnership with the Los Angeles Valiant of Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch League™ to promote season three of the Starz Original Series Ash vs Evil Dead. The partnership, which will see Ash vs Evil Dead become the Valiant’s sole and exclusive jersey sponsor through at least Stage 2 of the inaugural season of Overwatch League, is a unique example of a true content brand sponsorship in professional sports.

Ari Segal, LA Valiant’s President and COO, said, “Ash vs Evil Dead is a content property that is highly contextual to gaming and to our core demo and fan base. By creating truly unique, money-can’t-buy experiences for our fans around that property, we elevate the fan experience to something that aims at more than merely being a fan of a team; instead, we’re building a real community of people that activates around not only the Valiant, but also other properties or events from which it derives value and enjoyment.”

Peter Levin, the LA Valiant’s Chairman and Lionsgate’s President of Interactive Ventures, Games, and Digital Strategy, continued, “The Valiant’s audience, the audience for Overwatch League and esports generally, is one of the most elusive and yet highly sought after demographics. At both Lionsgate and the LA Valiant, we continue to think three dimensionally about how to reach and authentically connect with that constituency.”

As part of the sponsorship, Valiant fans will be given unprecedented access to Ash vs Evil Dead experiences, including exclusive screenings at Lionsgate’s studios in Santa Monica, Q&A/AMAs with creative voices behind the franchise, meet-and-greets, and more.

LA Valiant CEO Noah Whinston added, “This jersey sponsorship is a message to our fans that we will continue to work with partners and brands that look to add value to the fan experience. Lionsgate is completely aligned with us on this philosophy, as evidenced by this landmark partnership, and we will continue to create and integrate brands, events, and content to push the frontier of how teams create differentiated and lasting connections.”

The new Ash vs Evil Dead-sponsored jerseys will debut in competition during the first week of Overwatch League’s Stage 2, when the LA Valiant play the Shanghai Dragons at 5:00 PM PST on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Broadcast details can be found on The Overwatch League website, www.overwatchleague.com, and on Twitch at Twitch.tv/overwatchleague.

The third season of Ash vs Evil Dead will premiere Sunday, February 25, 2018, on Starz.

GameChanger Charity Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary as 2018 Donations Surpass $18 Million, Treyarch Chairman Mark Lamia Joins Board of Directors

GameChanger Charity and Former Twitch EVP Jonathan Shipman Reveal ZOTT, a New Web-based Content Platform Revolutionizing Patients’ Freedom to Play, Learn and Socialize

MENLO PARK, Calif.Feb. 22, 2018 – GameChanger Charity, a global non-profit enterprise providing aid and relief for young people battling life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families and caregivers, is commemorating its 10th anniversary with the news it has already secured donations valued over $18 million for 2018. The lion’s share of this achievement is thanks to a generous in-kind gift from Microsoft of one-year Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, which will be distributed to patients in children’s hospitals around the world and help further drive GameChanger’s outreach efforts.

“As a young cancer patient, I was stunned by the lack of entertainment, education and social interaction available in hospitals, as well as by the devastating effects this absence of communal and intellectual stimulation can have on kids and young adults,” said Taylor Carol, who co-founded GameChanger Charity with his father, Jim Carol, in 2007 after his own experience with childhood leukemia. “GameChanger was born from the belief that every person has a right to play, learn and socialize. We’re immensely grateful for every opportunity we’re given to bring even a moment of joy into the lives of those who fight the impossible each and every day.”

In addition, GameChanger Charity has announced that Mark Lamia, Chairman and former Studio Head of Treyarch, an award-winning development studio in the Call of Duty® franchise, has joined GameChanger Charity’s board of directors. This is the latest creative addition to the board, which includes massively popular YouTuber Jordan Maron, also known as CaptainSparklez.

“Ever since I learned about GameChanger’s mission, I have been inspired by their work to join their calling, which proves the power that human connection and play can have for those facing the unthinkable,” said Lamia. “Today I’m honored to join the passionate people who have made this force for good possible, as we look forward to the next decade of gaming and giving.”

GameChanger Charity is also proud to reveal a new venture called ZOTT (www.zott.tv), a private, for-profit subsidiary of GameChanger Charity created to advance its mission to improve the lives of patients around the world through technology and innovation. ZOTT is an over-the-top (OTT), multi-channel media distribution platform with a network of highly curated entertainment and educational content services for patients and administrators in hospitals. ZOTT has appointed Jonathan Shipman, a founding member and former executive vice president of broadcaster product development and video platform technologies at Twitch, as the company’s new president.

“I know from my own son’s experience the positive impact meaningful opportunities to play, learn and socialize can have for those fighting through a life-threatening illness and the ensuing recovery, especially at a young age,” said Shipman. “ZOTT is a new leap forward in patient engagement and support, with the power to scale GameChanger’s founding mission for socioeconomic good upward around the world. You’ll be hearing a lot more from us in the coming year.”

ZOTT is currently in pilot programs at a number of prominent pediatric facilities around the United States, including Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. ZOTT has also partnered with the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Children’s Hospital Colorado to measure the platform’s impact on patients in a wide range of developmental and rehabilitative categories as it grows further.

Video Review

Overview

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall is the first major expansion to the 2016 4X strategy game. Rise and Fall introduces the new age system that mimics rise and fall of civilizations over time, along with a new overhauled government system that adds city loyalty and governors. Of course, no Civilization expansion is complete without the addition of a variety of new units, leaders, and buildings.

Story

As with the base game, there isn’t much for story in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. There is a lot of writing in the game itself, though. The in-game encyclopedia that provides short tutorials and serves as a reference guide is well written and edited. All the new leaders have small dialogue lines for diplomatic encounters. The lines are solid, and there are even a few that will elicit a chuckle.

Gameplay

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall’s new government system adds a loyalty meter for each city. Cities too close to cities from other civilizations or too far from friendly cities will suffer a loyalty penalty. If the loyalty meter drops to zero, the city will rebel and become a free city. At this time, other cities from nearby civilizations will begin exerting influence, with the civilization exerting the most influence adding the city to their roster. Governors, government policies, Golden Ages, and certain buildings can all increase loyalty in a city.

Each civilization can recruit up to seven governors to raise the loyalty of a city and impart special bonuses. Research in the civics tree will unlock governor titles that can be exchanged for new governors or improve existing ones. Each of the seven governors have their own specialty, so choosing governor abilities and assigning them to the right cities can give a border city a little more peace of mind or help a new fledgling city get off the ground quicker.

The new era system tracks all the achievements by a civilization in each age. At the end of each age, players can choose a dedication that will award bonus Era points. Players will need to hit a minimum number of Era points per age to earn Golden Age and avoid a Dark Age. Dark Ages hit players with a severe penalty to loyalty, making their cities vulnerable to rebellion. Being stuck in the Dark Age also provides players with an opportunity for greatness. Special policies will help players dig themselves out of their hole. If the player manages to achieve enough points for a Golden Age, they will be rewarded with a Heroic Age that gives them three Golden Age dedications.

Rise and Fall’s Era and loyalty system tightens up the feel of the game. As a casual 4X strategy player, the grand scale of the genre can be a little overwhelming at times. I like how the age system gives a shorter-term goal for me to aim for. At the same time, the ebb and flow of ages adds another layer of strategy to city building and more risk for colonizing new continents. The system also makes border disputes a lot more challenging, as having other civilizations building cities by the border can mean Dark Age will send poorly managed border towns into rebellion.

The new expansion adds several new leaders, units, and buildings to the game. Additionally, some tweaks to the diplomacy system has been added. The new leaders are a mix of old favourites and new faces to the series. There are some intriguing options for the new leaders with some interesting abilities. I am a huge fan of Poundmaker and the Cree, as he’s one of the few leaders designed for pacifist victories in mind. The new changes to diplomacy are interesting. Players can now create specific types of alliances for extra bonuses and can declare emergency alliances under certain circumstances. I like the idea of the emergency system, as it gives other players a chance to even the playing field. Players can declare an emergency in response to certain conditions like a nuclear weapons launch. Both the targeted player and the group of players who joined in on the emergency will be given separate objectives, with the winner netting themselves some serious bonuses. The emergency system in practice fell a little flat for me. The current set of conditions needed to trigger one feels a little too restrictive, as it doesn’t provide options for slowing a cultural or scientific victory.

Visuals

The graphic experience continues to be excellent. The new leaders, governors, and units fit well in the game’s overall style. The Era system’s UI is visual in nature and conveys important information with a quick glance to the bottom right of the screen. I love the UI colour change that represents the player’s civilization age status.

Audio

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall adds to the game’s already strong audio experience. The sound effects are solid. The new leaders’ voice actors are enjoyable, though it would be impossible for me to judge the actual quality of voice acting as the leaders speak in their native languages. The soundtrack continues to impress. The new music starts with music from each civilization’s culture and slowly begins to fuse it with more traditional, epic sounding video game music as ages continue. It’s a stellar soundtrack that I hope they release in full.

Overall

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall is a solid expansion. Not all the changes are perfectly executed, and the expansion doesn’t change the gameplay too radically. However, Rise and Fall tightens up the gameplay nicely and is worth a buy.

RACERS, REV YOUR ENGINES! NEW COOPERATIVE ARCADE RACING GAME TRAILBLAZERS COMING SPRING 2018

RACERS, REV YOUR ENGINES! NEW COOPERATIVE ARCADE RACING GAME TRAILBLAZERS COMING SPRING 2018

Rising Star Games and Supergonk reveal first details on ground-breaking racing title coming soon to all major gaming formats

LONDON, UK – 22 February 2018 Videogame publisher Rising Star Games, in partnership with new UK-based independent game developer Supergonk, today announced that Trailblazers, the world’s first true, second-to-second co-operative arcade racing game, will be unleashed across all major gaming platforms from Spring 2018.

Trailblazers is a fresh new co-operative racing title with an innovative on-track game mechanic: paint the track, boost on your colour and work as a team to win! Racing in teams of up to three-versus-three, players paint the track as they race, capturing key areas to dynamically change the racing line, then boosting on their team’s colour. Racers who drive with flair and style will also amass skill points to blaze their way to victory! Players can experience the blistering high-speed action with up to six players online, or locally via split-screen for up to four local players with additional online or CPU-controlled challengers.

“The Supergonk team is proud to announce Trailblazers: our vision of true co-op racing designed from the ground-up with team play at its core”, said Ben Ward, founder of Supergonk. “The brand new paint/boost mechanics introduce a fresh layer of second-to-second strategic thinking which can’t be found in other racing titles. As huge racing game fans, we feel that the genre often hasn’t been as innovative as we’d like. Our aim with Trailblazers is clear: create a brand new IP to reinvigorate the genre and build an unexpected new racer that we ourselves want to play”.

Loaded with multiplayer thrills and a series of single-player challenges across an extended campaign mode, Trailblazers is an audio-visual onslaught of retro-futuristic style and attitude. The game takes place in a lavishly presented world from the creative mind of BAFTA award winning artist Will Milton. Players race through expansive and stunning scenic tracks set across locations ranging from mountain tops to lush forests and arid desert valleys. Aural soundscapes are provided via the officially licensed soundtrack featuring leaders of the Future Funk genre, including Get On Up by Skope, Bad King Kong by The Derevolutions, and Dead Ringer by A.Skillz.

In Trailblazers players will race as, and alongside, a diverse cast of characters. Each driver plays a vital role in the racing community and unfolding story of the Trailblazers world, and each has a unique role and driving behaviour. Players can also choose from a showroom of the fastest race cars in the galaxy, each with customised stats to fit every play style and track type.

“We are thrilled to have worked alongside Supergonk to help realise their vision”, said Martin Defries, Managing Director of Rising Star Games. “The game is superb, the ambition high and the opportunity vast. We are keen to show the gaming community across the world just how great this game is”.

Trailblazers, developed by Supergonk and published digitally by Rising Star Games, will be available globally from Spring 2018 across all major gaming platforms. Keep your engines running for incoming additional information about gameplay modes and features of this ground-breaking new arcade racing title, by following Rising Star Games on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or visit the Trailblazers website.

‘Spellsworn’ PvP Brawls Hit the Arena on March 13

Frogsong Studios Celebrates ‘Spellsworn’ Upcoming Launch with FREE Weekend on Steam

Malmö, Sweden — February 22, 2018 — Swedish developer Frogsong Studios today announced that their PvP arena brawler, Spellsworn, will move out of Steam Early Access into a free to play commercial launch on March 13th. From today through to February 25th, players can enter fast-paced spellcasting matches in the Spellsworn Arena on Steam for free.

“The game is in the final development stages, and so we are excited to invite everyone this weekend to experience intense battles of wizardry in the Spellsworn arena free of charge”, said Stefan Jonsson, CEO of Frogsong Studios. “After the official release, we will introduce a Founders Edition, which new players can purchase in order to get two Legendary Skins and two Legendary Staffs. Early Access supporters will automatically become the Founders and as a token of gratitude will get two additional items, exclusive to our pre-launch players.”

In Spellsworn, players rely upon tactics and quick reflexes to outsmart and obliterate opponents, using a well thought out combination of spells across different disciplines. Players battle it out in teams or free-for-all over intense five-round matches for up to eight players. Between each round, the magic arsenal can be customized by trading or upgrading spells to switch up strategy and mess with the minds of rival wizards. The magic mayhem reaches another level once the hazardous environment begins wreaking havoc on the playable field, causing damage over time to each player pushed off of the arena. With an ever-changing environment that poses as much of a threat as the enemy, adaptation is just as important as a quick hand and mind. In a world gripped by a war of magic, only the skilled and strong will be victorious!

Spellsworn is available on Steam Early Access for $9.99/€9.99/£9.99

Raising Arizona Review

Raising Arizona

Studios: Circle Films
Publisher: 20th Century Fox
Platforms: Cinema
Release Date: Out Now

Overview

The Coen brothers are distinct auteurs in the cinema making landscape which are known for making films that are made to both replicate and subvert entire genres of film. Their body of work attracts a dedicated cult following who appreciate the off-kilter style and narratives that their films so often feature. Raising Arizona is one of the earlier works of the brothers but it certainly worked to establish them as carving out a unique niche for themselves in the Hollywood landscape. Eager to immerse myself in more of their cinematic madness, I hopped on down to George Street cinemas to watch the In the House screening for the first film I’ll be reviewing of their new season.

Once again, our hosts for the evening were Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn who opened up the proceedings with lively interactions with the audience before settling in to discuss some of the film’s trivia. A tidbit I noted from their discussion before the film was the fact that Cage demanded that his hair be made to stand more on end the more stressed his character became. To quote Quinny “Cage is playing a cartoon character in this movie” and after having seen it, I pretty much agree with his assessment.

Story

Our story follows the flawed yet wholesome romantic relationship between convenience store robber “Hi” McDunnough (Nicolas Cage) and police officer Edwina “Ed” (Holly Hunter) who fall in love as Ed takes Hi’s mugshots over the years. After getting married and moving in together, the couple try to have children but their hopes are dashed when they find out that Ed is infertile. Compounding their misfortune, they are turned down for adoption due to Hi’s extensive criminal history. In the midst of their despair, the couple hear that a wealthy local businessman had recently fathered quintuplets with his wife. In hearing this bit of news, the couple determine that a redistribution of babies is in order and decide to kidnap one of the bouncing bubs for themselves.

The plot proceeds in typical Coen style with plot points and elements coming out of left field and then taking centre stage in the foreground. You’ll be treated to a significant degree of eclectic near-absurdism as new elements, characters and emotional arcs are thrown out of nowhere and immediately fit into the film’s twisting and wild milieu. Upon reflection in writing this review; I have realised that the Coen’s did put more foreshadowing into this film than I had earlier thought but were very good at obfuscating it in the general thrust of the film’s pacing. The two Snoat brothers (John Goodman and William Forsythe) especially surprised me when they entered into the film’s central narrative. It’s a testament to the skill of both Goodman and Forsythe that they are able to inhabit the screen as both central and bit-characters when need be with Coen’s highlighting or diminishing their presence accordingly. Similarly, Hunter’s performance as Ed deserves recognition for being able maintain a strong screen presence while acting opposite the film’s greatest asset and liability… which brings us to my next point.

A lot of your enjoyment of this film will rest upon how much leeway you’re willing to give Cage in his performance. Cage pretty much pulls out his trademark style for his addition to the film. There’s really no better way to describe Cage as an actor than Quinny’s quip about him being a living cartoon character. It’s a rare director who knows how to make use of this particular brand of insanity which Cage brings to almost every production he’s in but I know but I’ve seen it and I know it can be done. The Coens do an admirable job of harnessing the madness but gorram, they needed to get him to pull himself together on the accent.

What works to Cage’s strength is that since it’s a Coen Brother’s movie, which features the general narrative milieu I was talking about earlier, he doesn’t stand out as much as he does in other films.  I’ll even go out on a limb and further say that Cage’s performance finds a comfortable home with the Coen’s narrative. It’s an assemblage which works and ultimately adds to the film’s credit but if you’re someone who is adamantly anti-Cage, then I don’t believe this will be the one to win you over…

Visuals

The film accompanies the Coen’s offbeat narrative with an equally offbeat visual direction. There’s an almost uncanny feeling to the Coen brother’s visual style which makes their shots feel both realistic and not. There’s always something in the frame of a shot or sequence to throw things off kilter and break your immersion. Luckily, this effect works in the Coen’s favour as it helps keep the audience on the back foot and open to the film’s humour. It’s clear to see the hand of an auteur behind the wheel in this film’s visual composition and it’s one of the reasons why I feel the Coens are able to consistently find a cult audience for their work.

Audio

This film has an interesting offbeat soundtrack to it to add to the overall eclectic charm of the whole film. It’s a discordant mixture of banjos, yodelling and classical music. The fast pace of the musical accompaniment generally adds to the comedic effect of the frenetic action on the screen. The vocal yodels and banjo give the film a rural American feel which fits in with our characters of simple means and desires. They do a great job of accompanying the film’s themes and tones but ultimately don’t leave an impression beyond it’s runtime. The music does it’s job but doesn’t quite leave a bigger impression.

Overall

The film’s narrative is pretty much in keeping with the signature Coen style of absurdist maximalism with the ensemble cast putting in great performances to make the disparate story elements work together. Even Cage’s onscreen presence is giving a good home in the Coen’s extended stable of performers. Matching the discordant story is a unique visual style soundtrack which work together to add to the film’s overall charm and comedy. This film was certainly charming and although it is not my favourite Coen brother’s film, it is certainly one I enjoyed being given the opportunity to see.
