Hey, remember that update to Gran Turismo 5 we talked about yesterday? Yea, it’s out now. Like right now. Go turn on your PS3 and insert the disc right now so that the 1 hour downloading period can begin. So you have the process started now? Good. Once you have finished reading all of the Capsule Computers articles that were posted today you can go to your PS3 and start enjoying the Functionality Update 2.0 that adds mid-race saving options and a bunch of other awesome goodies.
If new tracks, cars and paint jobs are more your thing though, then you will have to wait a little longer. The DLC for GT5 is not coming until October 18. Good thing you will already have the update out of the way when it launches though!
It has been 2 weeks now since Hunter x Hunter made it’s grand premiere to critical acclaim (check out our review of episode 1 and episode 2). Now the voices of several pivotal characters for the Hunter Exam arc have been cast.
The newly cast roles for the Hunter Exam arc are as follows:
Satotz – Toshio Furukawa (Piccolo from Dragonball)
Hanzo – Daisuke Kishio (Kaname from Vampire Knight)
Tonpa – Toshiharu Sakurai (Doranikov from Doraemon)
Nicole – Norihisa Mori (Amori from the older Hunter x Hunter anime)
Beans – Ichitaro Ai (Pukamon in Digimon Xros Wars)
The most interesting of which may be Norihisa Mori, who is to date the only cast member to appear in both the new and old series.
You will be able to see all 5 of these voice actors in action as their characters make their debut appearance this Sunday when the Hunter Exam properly kicks off. What do you think of these new cast members? Let us know in the shoutbox or comments section.
Squids is the debut game from the Game Bakers, a company made by industry veterans. The Game Bakers team have some AAA console games under their belt, so Squids is sure to be a great game.
Squids is an RPG based underwater, where an infectious black ooze is threatening their ecosystem. The black ooze basically turns creatures into evil zombie-like creatures that you and your squid buddies have to fight off. You get to choose from four classes, meaning that you construct your party based on the four classes’ strengths and weaknesses. Given that most RPGs are based around three classes, so this reinvention is interesting news, and hopefully it pans out well. But given the developers, it seems to be in the right hands.
Emeric Thoa, Game Bakers’ CCO and co-founder describes the game as having the “depth hardcore games are looking for, along with the accessibility casual gamers expect on the iPhone or iPod touch”.
The screenshots look as fun as they are cute, I mean squids with hats? Come on, that’s pretty awesome.
Squids is available now for $0.99 at the iTunes store – HERE
It will also be released soon on iPad (HD), Android, PC, and Mac.
Think of this as your little bit of awesome for the day.
After weeks of teasers including on set photos and character shots, Marvel have finally released a trailer for the Avengers, and it doesn’t disappoint!
Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury all get their moments, as does the new Bruce Banner/ Incredible Hulk.
The story of course is all about the first teaming up of the heroes to form the Avengers, and will see the return of Thor villian Loki as part of the opposing side. By the looks of it the new team doesn’t gel together quite from the off – and surprise surprise that it’s Tony Stark stealing the show.
The Joss Whedon directed movie is still a long way off – it’s not released until May next year – but it’s shaping up to be a great start for Marvel’s superhero supersquad.
You know what they say: when the bat’s away, the crazies will play… or something like that. That’s loosely the premise of WB Games’ upcoming team shooter, Gotham City Impostors. A couple of us here at Capsule were lucky enough to get into the beta over the weekend to get our vigilante on.
The game takes the Joker’s infamous advice, and employs a “not-so-serious” approach to itself – a nice contrast to Christopher Nolan’s increasingly gloomy Batman films. As such, Gotham City Impostors plays much like a cross between Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life: Counter Strike, with a tried-and-true team multiplayer structure dressed up in a playful atmosphere.
Batman and the Joker are away from Gotham City for undisclosed reasons (my guess is that they’ve eloped), and so two teams of unstable fans have emerged to battle it out in their absence, in classic Deathmatch and Capture-the-Flag style matches.
It’s probably best not to ask too many questions about the scenario, but the important thing is the game works. It plays a lot like Counter Strike, with the visual style of TF2, reimagined by Tim Burton. So expect fat guys in Joker makeup and hot chicks in Batman masks, duelling over territory of questionable strategic value.
Rather than being divided into classes, each player chooses their weapon combinations, from either preset loadouts or cobbling together their own sets to fit their play style. Levelling up unlocks more weapons and mods for them, as well as gadgets, which give players boosts or new abilities. These can allow players faster movement speeds, more damage resistance, etc, but others vary the gameplay further. The grappling hook can be used to zip out of danger in a pinch, or climb to a rooftop or balcony and pick off opponents from an unexpected vantage point. There are plenty of others we didn’t get to try, but the unique strategies these open up will keep players on their toes.
The only game mode on show so far was Psyche Warfare, which is essentially a reskinning of the staple Capture the Flag mode. Both teams compete to collect a battery in the middle of the map and use it to power their propaganda machine, defend it while it charges up, yada yada. The difference is, once it’s powered up and your propaganda is spewing everywhere, your opponents will be rendered as useful as shooting gallery ducks, confused and unable to attack. So celebrate your mini-victory by running around and picking them off – just watch out for their particularly shameful slap attacks.
Using the incapacitated enemy team as a reward system is genius, and shows off the sense of humour that permeates the game. Every aspect creates a consistently light-hearted, amusing tone, from the new approaches to classic gameplay mechanics, to the dialogue, to the wording of items in the menus. It’s not hilarious, but its self-aware sense of fun is refreshing.
The only problems I’ve seen with the game are the kind you’d expect to encounter in a beta, and the developers are ironing these out as we speak. I’m confident that once the final build is released, Gotham City Impostors will quickly find an enthusiastic, dedicated community.
The game will be available for download through the Playstation Network, Xbox Live and Steam early next year.
Last night I was lucky enough to get a shot at a few of the stages and modes of Battlefield 3, and I have to say I was impressed. First off we watched a presentation from the developer of Battlefield 3, which you can see HERE, and then we were left to roam free. There was campaign mode set up on Xbox 360s, PS3s, as well as Co-op set up on some PS3s.
First off, I just have to say wow. Wow.
My first shot at it was on the Xbox, with a Razer Onza controller and Razer Chimaera headset. EA and Dice certainly know their stuff, because pairing up with this superior controller and headset really brought it to another level. The first thing I noticed was the graphics, I know that main thing that’s been publicised about Battlefield is the amazing graphics, but I wasn’t prepared for just how good they were.
For a taste of it, here is the first of many examples I will be drooling over, the glare coming off the sun as you exit a tunnel makes you feel like you are literally walking out of a tunnel wearing headgear. Plus, walking through the streets, the banners on the sides of the buildings were flapping in the explosion-ridden breeze. This small attention to detail speaks volumes about the game.
The campaign levels I played through were so involving and interesting that I could have sat down and played through the entire game in one sitting. It wasn’t just the visuals, but the sound. The whole thing drew you in and had the entire experience and feel of everything your soldier was doing. The tactile experience extended to the cutscene, where you could literally see the dust particles floating around in the air.
The gameplay was great, the weapons handled well and the controls were user friendly. The game had a good way of introducing you to the controls quickly and making you get accustomed to the feel of the game without pressuring you too much in the beginning.
I won’t go into the game itself too much, but at one point you got to take out a sniper with a rocket launcher. A freaking rocket launcher. You get to watch half the building fall apart under the ownage of your rocket launcher.
The co-op mode wasn’t quite as impressive as campaign, perhaps the levels that we played through weren’t as visually impressive as the campaign levels I tried, but again the gameplay was quite fun. Although, to be honest for half the level didn’t seem to require co-op tactics. Once in the meat of the battle, that was when everything hit the fan. Being thrown in the middle of the battlefield was fantastic, at first it was messy and bewildering, but once you get familiarised with it, it totally kicks ass.
I have to say, I was keen for Battlefield 3 before, but now I’m practically frothing at the mouth for it.
Make sure to check out our interview with the global Battlefield community manger HERE. Plus, take a look at the gallery of photos below!
Battlefield 3 comes out on October 27 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Make sure to grab your copy when it comes out, it is definitely gonna be worth it!
