Layoffs hit Obsidian, South Park development team affected

There is some bad news today coming out of Obsidian Entertainment as it has been revealed that a number of people inside the company have been laid off, even some people who were currently working on developing the upcoming South Park RPG. Everywhere from Obsidian’s own forums to LinkedIn pages list various layoffs, with the LinkedIn pages showing the loss of some South Park developers.

To make things even worse, a next-gen game project that was meant to be in development has also been canceled, as Jason Fader was meant to be the project lead on something called Project North Carolina, however he too has been laid off as he has stated on his Twitter. Things are grim at Obsidian but we have reached out for comment and we wish everyone who lost their jobs the best in their future endeavors.

Super Monkey Ball on PS Vita allows level creation from pictures

Even though the PlayStation Vita has been out now for nearly a month, Sega’s Super Monkey Ball series has yet to make an appearance for the brand new handheld. However today Sega of Japan has launched the official website for the game and this website contains a number of reveals.

One of these reveals is the fact that the game will be released in Japan on June 14th and that it is being called Super Monkey Ball Tokumori Asobita! which translates loosely to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz in English. Other than that they also revealed that players will be able to create new Monkey Ball levels from pictures they take with the Vita’s camera and there is even a co-op mode, pictured above, which tethers two Monkey Balls together. Currently Sega of America has yet to announce when Vita owners can expect the title, though we have reached out for comment.

Bioshock Infinite calls in Handyman in second part of Heavy Hitters video series

Irrational Games today introduce the next enemy for Bioshock Infinite in their Heavy Hitters series of videos: the Handyman.

Let’s not beat about the bush: the Handyman is the kind of enemy that makes you crap your pants. With both power and speed, when the solid mass that is the Handyman comes hurtling towards you, along with that unnerving noise as well, you’ll just want to get out of the way at all costs.

According to the video, the name comes from his giant hands, and the character is loosely based on toy models. But is it man or machine? All that remains is to watch the video if you’ve got the nerve.

Bioshock Infinite launches October 16th, 2012, on Xbox 360, PC and PS3.

The Walking Dead game nearly Alive

Are you a fan of The Walking Dead? Yeah? Well are you a fan of Telltale Games? Yeah? Well that’s good, because Telltale Games have been cooking up a game based on The Walking Dead for quite some time now and have confirmed that the game is nearly alive.

The game is currently undergoing certification for the Xbox Live and Playstation Network which will last roughly 6 weeks, with the game getting a release no long after certification.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead game follows similar suit to Telltale’s Back to the Future game’s in that it is an episodic adventure styled game. The Walking Dead game however does not focus on the hero of the comic books and TV series, Rick Grimes, instead choosing to focus on another original survivor Lee Everett.

The game is also confirmed for release on PC and Mac in the future. But for now Telltale have their sights aimed for the Xbox Live and Playstation Network. Just what the doctor ordered, am I right? More Zombies.

Gamevil Releases First DOTA-Like Game in Plants War

Gamevil has released their new real-time mobile action game, Plants War. Plants War is the first DOTA-like game to be released onto the mobile market so far, so if you’re a fan of DOTA then this will definitely be a great game for you to pick up. The new defense strategy game pits two opposing forces in one battle arena to defend their towers and destroy the opponent’s one.

Plants War takes place after humans have abandoned Earth, leaving it riddled with pollution, in a Wall-E-esque sort of way. There is only one safe place for the plants, the Dryad Forest next to the magical Lake Naiad. In the game, the players must help Leafy and his plant-y friends defend the sacred lake from the Beasts.

You have to train up Heroes, so make sure to keep your tactics in mind as you train them up in levels and achievements. There are also several Heroes with unique abilities for you to use, and a special achievements and award system.

VP and Head of Gamevil USA, Kyu Lee, has said this about the game:

Plants War is a DOTA-like game that integrates RPG leveling up with real-time action strategy. We are excited to bring this new popular genre to the mobile market with the support of KOCCA and IDEABOX.

Plants War is available NOW for FREE on iPhone, iTouch and iPad. Grab your copy HERE.
