Men In Black 3 Review

Men In Black 3
Studio: Amblin Entertainment
Publisher: Columbia Pictures
Format: Cinema
Release Date: May 24, 2012

Overview

Men In Black 3 is the third film in the Men In Black movie franchise based off the comic book series published by Aircel comics (later Marvel comics) with a few alterations to the premise. Rather than going for a darker, murder all witnesses tone, the movies opt for a more ambivalent approach to extraterrestrial threats as well as showcasing almost parodious comedic elements.

Taking the premise of a secret government agency set in place to monitor and police alien threats and visitations to earth, The Men In Black are the team that handles these potential threats on a daily basis. The stories told within the movies follow the agents J and K and their investigations into alien activities.

Story

The story in Men In Black 3 is one of comedy and time-travel. It follows the premise of having one of the organisations leading agents, Agent K, being removed from time by a time-travelling ex-alien convict with a grudge. With Agent K removed from his time-line, we can see which effects this has on his partner, Agent J’s, life on earth and with the MIB.

How would your life be affected by an event that suddenly saw someone that had a significant impact on your life being removed from a time since before you had even met? How would the people around you react? These, and more, are questions that the film takes on and appreciates throughout the story.

What I particularly enjoyed about this film was the way that it contrasted the life of the older Agent K of 2012 against the younger Agent K of 1969. Up until Agent J travels back in time, Agent K is shown as an emotionless old man who seems to be void of any human emotion whilst he is on a case, and is even less open while he is off one. This contrasts nicely against when After Agent J travels back in time and meets a younger Agent K who seems to be a little more into life than he was as an old man. This kind of character development is well played throughout the film by showing Agent J’s attitude towards him being comedically shocked at one point thanks to the differences.

The storyline element of time-travel was one that I thought was played quite well in this film. One particular scene that I found to be quite memorable was one where Agent J is fighting a particular Alien and he purposely takes hits from the enemy in order to travel back in time and use that same sequence against it. This is something I would like to see in some more videogames and movies.

The story in Men In Black 3 is one that is certainly enjoyable and is often quite humourous. However, it does feel that it is a little quick, but I’m not sure if that’s out of enjoyment or a short running time.

Visuals

Visually Men In Black 3 is a fairly amazing film. And what I mean by this is that it was bright, colourful and vibrant to look at, even while wearing 3D glasses which can often screw with the colours of a film.

What I found particularly respectable was that everything in the film felt very Men In Black. A fear that I had going in was that because of the time spent between movies, things may not have been redesigned as well which could have impacted on the films aesthetics.

So what makes a Men In Black film aesthetically Men In Black? It’s gotta be the black suits, right? Sure that’s part of it, but maybe there’s more. How about that MIB control room and how it’s all white and far more technologically advanced than regular technology? Surely that’s a part of it. Shiny Alien weaponry with more power than 1000 suns? Those are there too. Aliens! Aliens are it aren’t they? Not entirely. The aesthetics of Men In Black encompass all of these things and more and it is something that the third movie got right. This film, visually speaking, felt just like a Men In Black film.

What a lot of people might notice with this film is a lot of the visual references to past events. Like, for instance, Agent J has a picture of Frank the dog alien thing above his bed and Agent K has an opening wall full of guns like the one seen it Men In Black 2. The movie is littered with throwbacks like these, particularly towards the start, and will stick out to anyone that has seen the first two movie recently.

The last thing I want to talk about with the visuals is the additional 3D option. Sadly, like most 3D movies, the novelty wears off quite quickly and it feels like you’re just watching a regular film after a short while. Also, the 3D is never really fully utilised to its maximum effect. I’d say watch this in 3D if it’s available to you, but you’re not losing anything by going with the 2D option.

Audio

Audibly, Men In Black 3 is pretty good. making it’s return is the instantly recognisable Men In Black theme tune (not the song by Will Smith) in the movies score. I actually quite like the way they used the theme in this film, giving Agent J’s investigation an even more authentic feel.

Even better than the familiar score is the way everything in film sounds. The Aliens have their particular quirks, each weapon has it’s own sound and of course, the neuralyzer has it’s usual memory wiping sounds. I feel that if they had of changed any of these things, the movie would have lost that usual MIB charm and would have been the worse for it.

What I absolutely loved about the film though, was the way audio was used as the basis for comedy within the film. A familiar scene is at the start when Agent O begins to quote an alien verbatim and begins garbldeygooking. It was so hilarious, the thunderous laughter said so.

Overall

Men In Black 3 is an entertaining film to watch that will not only keep you laughing, but will also keep you engaged in the story that spans multiple timelines. Nothing particular about this movie changes the franchise, but it does evolve it. Fans of the first two movies will absolutely love this film.

SEGA has today announced that their upcoming first person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines will unfortunately be delayed until February 12, 2013. The game had previously been announced for a “Fall 2012” release date, but today SEGA has reconfirmed the official release date which pushes back Aliens: Colonial Marines further away from gamers’ hands until early next year.

Last month’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view was a near perfect event with some superb main event matches where the participants delivered some truly compelling and emotional performances, and even the undercard was decent enough. As soon as John Cena pinned Brock Lesnar on the steel steps to end what was the best main event in recent memory, it became pretty clear that WWE had a very difficult act to follow, as they raised the bar too high for themselves.

It became pretty clear that Over the Limit 2012 was going to be a throwaway pay-per-view at best, and by the time the card was finalised it seemed as if it was going to be like a typical WWE Raw Supershow and not a good one either. In fact, Over the Limit has a track record of being the most underwhelming pay-per-view of the year.

Over the Limit 2012 did not end up being the total train wreck that we predicted in CC Powerslam Episode 5, that said it wasn’t a very good show either but it had some moments of brilliance. As per usual, there were two squash matches, one with Brodus Clay and the other with CC Editor in Chief’s favourit wrestler, Ryback. The show also opened up with an over the top battle royal, with the winner getting a chance to compete for either the United States Championship or the Intercontinental Championship. Not to mention, there was a glorified squash match in the Youtube pre-show where Kane defeated Zack Ryder.

Well this Overview section is Over the Limit already, let’s get this review rolling!

Tag Team Championship Match – Kofi Kingston and R-Trtuh (c) vs. ‘ZigSwag’

This was supposed to be a forgettable filler tag team match, but it ended up being the best worked match of the entire pay-per-view. This was a very thrilling and fast paced contest with all the combatants brining in their A-game, especially Dolph Ziggler. The chemistry was there, and the match took some crazy twist and turns. There were several and cool unexpected spots, with the crowd really alive and hot. The match ended in a flash with Kofi Kingston hitting a surprise Trouble in Paradise for the victory.

It’s been too long since we have seen a memorable tag team title match, and this contest surprised everyone. All the participants delivered a performance so intense and compelling, that it made the Tag Team Championships look legitimate, instead of it being some low-card championship. The tag team division does not need more teams, it just needs compelling stories and superb match ups featuring wrestlers who are actually motivated to put on a top notch match.

Overall: 4/5

Divas Championship Match– Layla (c) vs. Beth Phoenix

Another pleasant surprise, this match turned out to be far better than what anyone was expecting. It had decent time, a lively crowd, and the announce team actually calling it properly. Beth Pheonix and Layla were able to prove the worth of the highly underutilised women’s division, by putting on a solid and virtually botch-free (gasp!) contest. The contrast was good, with Layla offering the more fast paced style of wrestling and Beth bringing in the power game.  This was a very fast paced and well worked match that featured plenty of solid wrestling, reversals, and near falls. The ending was perfect, with Layla hitting her finisher out of nowhere for the victory, and the announce team did a great job in calling that finish. The women’s division is capable of so much more, but this match is a step in the right direction (please stay on it WWE).

Overall: 3.5/5

World Heavyweight Championship Fatal 4 Way- Sheamus (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho

This was a very run-of-the-mill Fatal 4 Way match with a very predictable finish that could be seen from a mile away. There wasn’t anything wrong with the match, if anything it was a fun little contest that was pretty short for a Fatal 4 Way, but it was fast paced and packed full of finishers and signature moves. Everyone in the match did a decent job, and it pretty much became a battle of finishers and signature moves, with each superstar being able to land almost their entire repertoire. It had some cool spots, but in the end it was a forgettable contest with Sheamus ending the match with the rather weak looking ‘White Noise’ finishing manoeuvre.

Overall: 3/5

Intercontinental Championship Match – Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Christian

This match was not advertised in the build-up of Over the Limit, but it certainly was a welcome addition. A battle royal opened the show which showcased an interesting mix of wrestlers, with the biggest surprise being Christian, fully healed from the injuries that held him back for months, even causing him to drop out of the inter-brand tag team match at Wrestlemania 28. Christian won the match, and in an unexpected face turn, decided to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Intercontinental Championship.

This is perhaps the best match Cody Rhodes has had in 2012, seeing as how he was stuck in an awful feud with the Big Show. This was a decent match, there was good in-ring chemistry and Christian put on a great performance with no signs of ring-rust. There was nothing particularly special about this match, considering the fact that it was booked during the pay-per-view eliminated any compelling storytelling. It was good for what it was, with a finish that could have been executed a little better. That said it, was a solid comeback match for Christian and winning the belt will help regain some of the momentum he lost due to injury.

Overall: 3/5

WWE Championship Match – CM Punk (c) vs. Daniel Bryan

Probably the most hyped match on the card, and one that was made for the Internet Wrestling Community. The actual build-up of this match was practicially non-existant on television, instead WWE decided to publish a series of articles on their website highlighting the rivalry from the independent wrestling circuit. In other words, this match was made for pro wrestling hipsters.

For what it’s worth, this was a brilliant match from a technical wrestling standpoint. Fast back-and-forth action, plenty of submissions, high risk moves, and other modern wrestling conventions. This match featured the kind of wrestling that made Ring of Honour so popular among the hipster crowd. Great wrestling spectacle aside, this match sorely lacked story, and it sorely lacked in-ring psychology and dynamic. This was a very run of the mill wrestling clinic, which really isn’t what makes a match spectacular, just look at CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho at Extreme Rules 2012 and Undertaker vs. Triple at Wresltemania 28, they had little to do with fancy mat-based wrestling but they were amazing because they told a compelling story and showcased a ton of passion and emotion. This WWE Championship match at Over the Limit was devoid of it all.

CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan is not a dream match, nor will it be the greatest rivalry unless it’s booked with a better story on-screen (the average WWE viewer does not care or know about the independent circuit). If anything, Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus had far better in-ring chemistry and story than this match.

Worst part was the ending, a typical controversial finish where there is a simultaneous pin-fall and submission. Punk was able to retain, and the ending ensures that the feud will carry on to No Way Out. I just hope the story surrounding it gets better. Doesn’t matter what I say here, all the Internet Wrestling Fans are going to call this match of the year.

Overall: 3/5

Face of WWE vs. Authority of WWE Match– John Cena vs. John Laurinaitus

One word sums up this match: Awkward. This was almost embarrassing to watch, as it wasn’t really a match, instead it felt like an overbooked segment on WWE Raw. The crowd wasn’t really into it, and there was nothing here that was remotely close to being a proper match. The whole thing was a joke from start to end, it dragged on for too long and it even had comedy segments. The ending was even more awkward with Big Show making a predictable hell turn to help John Laurinaitus defeat John Cena. John Laurinaitus deserves some props for being able to take some legit bumps, but otherwise this was a joke of a main event, one that did not do any favours for John Cena. Cena had such an amazing match with Brock Lesnar last month, and this awful main event at Over the Limit really kills his momentum because he was really starting to get over with the fans again.

Overall: 0.5/5

Overall:

Over the Limit 2012 was as underwhelming as we expected it to be. There were some really pleasant surprises in the undercard, and while the World Heavyweight and WWE title matches were well worked, they suffered from a poor build-up and non-existent story. The main event was an absolute joke that could have been booked a lot better. Overall, like the years before it, Over the Limit will be the most underwhelming pay-per-view of the year. At least the mid-card wrestlers came out looking good.

Hope Times #4 Reveals More Hitman: Absolution

The fourth edition of the Hope Times, the in game newspaper of the town of Hope, South Dakoda, featured in the upcoming title Hitman: Absolution, is now available to read. The latest edition details another tragic death, one involving a mechanic working on a car before being crushed. However, it is not what it seems. It looks like Agent 47, the main character in the Hitman series, may have some involvement in the death. Accompanying this news bulletin in a new screenshot, which is above this article.

Hitman: Absolution will be released for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. A concrete release date has not been determined as of yet. However, with E3 around the corner, Square Enix may announce a date.

Concept art for the next Tales Of game shared by Famitsu

As reported by Andriasang earlier today, Japanese gaming publication, Famitsu, has shared the very first concept artwork for the recently announced Tales Of game, which is meant to be a departure from the series’ norm. The first concept art gives a little glimpse of how much of a departure this game is going to be.

The artwork shows off some of the locations and set-pieces that may be included in the final game. What is clear here that they’re going for a  futuristic sci-fi setting with a post-modern twist, unlike the more medieval fantasy (occasionally steam-punk) themed setting of traditional Tales Of games. The artwork here shows off a bustling city with buildings, bridges, towers, and even public train transport.

This all looks very interesting, and it seems this upcoming Tales Of title will do for the series what Final Fantasy VII did for the Final Fantasy series. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.

Resistance: Burning Skies Spreads The Chimera Virus

With the release of Resistance: Burning Skies for the Playstation Vita only a mere ten days away, Frank Simon, Senior Managing Producer at SCEA decided to come down to Australia and reveal a few social features of the first person shooter. The feature that Simon talks about is quite strange. He actually talks about how owners of the game can infect other Playstation Vitas with the Chimera virus. No, it will not turn you Vita into a Chimera, but it will help you with multiplayer. An infected Vita will give players a multiplayer bonus.

In addition to being infected, gamers can also spread the virus itself, infecting friends and complete strangers. This is achieved through the use of near, the location based app. With that said, it seems that spreading the virus will be more effective with Wi-Fi/3G models, but possible with the Wi-Fi only models as well. You can hear Simon talking about the new social feature in a video below. Resistance: burning Skies will be released across Australia and New Zealand on May 31. Capsule Computers will be reviewing the game, so check that out once it is done.

The Dictator Invades the Box Office

The Dictator opened in Australian cinemas last Wednesday and managed to beat out the Avengers for top spot, making an amazing $5.9 million in the first five days. The Dictator also managed to make 21% more than Sacha Baron Cohen’s other hit movie, Borat.

Everyone’s been raving about Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest movie, as it takes on the cinemas.

4 out of 5 stars. ‘…he’s concocted what I think is his most sophisticated film to date.’ Margaret Pomeranz, At the Movies

The Dictator is a comedy that explores the political tensions and dictatorship, and just how far a dictator will go to continue to lovingly oppress a country and save it from democracy. Sacha Baron Cohen shows off his comedic skill in spades and is well supported by Anna Faris, who plays the doe-eyed naïve woman to a tee.

The Dictator is out in cinemas NOW. Check out Capsule Computers review of The Dictator HERE and the trailer for the movie below!
