Blue Exorcist Collection 1 Studio:A1-Pictures Publisher:Madman Entertainment Format:DVD (Subtitles Only) Release Date:June 6, 2012 Price: $59.95 – Available Here
Overview:
It’s hard to argue that Blue Exorcist wasn’t one of the most popular anime series of 2011. It seemed like almost overnight, the entire anime fandom had their eyes on Kazue Kato’s creation. To ascertain exactly what made Blue Exorcist so popular is a difficult task to undertake. From the outside, there doesn’t appear to be anything especially remarkable about this anime. So how has it managed to captivate audiences worldwide? What is it about Blue Exorcist that so many people have connected with? Well after viewing the first collection of the series, I think I understand now.
Story:
I’ll be frank, Blue Exorcist is as typically shonen as they come. There is nothing about Blue Exorcist that is particularly new or creative, in many ways it is incredibly derivative from other much better series. It takes a lot of inspiration from shows like Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho, as well as many other shonen anime. But this is actually what makes Blue Exorcist so enjoyable. It feels like a culmination of a lot of the better ideas the genre has had. Sure it’s derivative, but it’s only deriving from the good bits.
The plot of Blue Exorcist feels very much like Yu Yu Hakusho meets Fullmetal Alchemist. You have a protagonist whom is your classic delinquent with a heart of gold that is ultimately involved in all kinds of supernatural mayhem, all the while attending school like any ordinary kid (see Yusuke Urameshi). This protagonist also happens to have a close bond with his brother, a bond that grows stronger after the loss of a parental figure (see Ed and Al Elric). Oh but wait that’s not all, the protagonist is actually in fact part demon and is the progeny of the King of all Demons himself (see Yusuke Urameshi again for something eerily similar). As I said it’s all too familiar, but it works well enough because the execution is superb.
While it may be a very familiar affair, Blue Exorcist does have enough of it’s own identity stamped out that it’s easy to look past it’s use of other anime’s ideas. For one, the series implements a vast cast of characters that seemed to keep growing with each episode. There were some characters that I found a little too on the nose for my liking such as Ryuji Suguro otherwise known as ‘Bon’. I found his character to be a little too over the top at times, but the rest of the cast really does shine with incredibly detailed characterisation and well crafted one off stories for them to be fleshed out in.
This first collection’s pacing has been rather slow paced, which did leave me pondering when things will kick into gear. But the final stretch of episodes in this collection did impress me with it’s direction despite some miss steps in the lead up. I feel that this series has a lot of potential to take itself to great heights, many of which will rely on the path the second and final collection decides upon. As a single collection in and of itself this 13 episode pack felt like the foundations for what is to come. We got some great characterisation and an impressive amount of world building. How will the series deal with a more lengthy story arc? We will have to see.
Visuals and Audio:
Now this is a series that truly impresses in terms of aesthetics. These HD visuals are what I expect from all modern anime. The quality is top notch and the art style is distinctive and inviting. Just a quick glance and you are enveloped into this world of exorcists. That right there is a craft that not many anime understand, engrossing viewers almost immediately is something special and Blue Exorcist does that extraordinarily well.
From an audio stand-point I find it somewhat disappointing to say that this release does not feature a dub track and is merely subtitled only. But that probably won’t turn away the more hardcore audience that generally seems to prefer subs. It is a little disappointing though for the more casual viewers however that aren’t as accustomed to subs as the hardcore fans are. If you are in the more casual audience and prefer dubs, wait a while and pick this up when it gets it’s eventual dub release, but if not the original audio is sure to please everyone else.
The series soundtrack is phenomenal and certainly one of the better soundtracks I have heard in a long time. I took an instant liking to the opening theme by Uverworld. It’s just that good. All in all they couldn’t have gotten better backing tracks for this series.
Extras:
Thankfully Blue Exorcist makes up for it’s lack of an English dub by implementing a plethora of juicy special features for us to sink our teeth into. The collection features a special animation called ‘Ura-Ex’ (B-Side Exorcist), textless opening and ending themes and some web previews for each new episode (these are more cool than they sound). It’s a nice little buffer of extras to add on to the 13 episode count of the collection and ultimately makes for a mighty enticing purchase.
Overall: Blue Exorcist is nothing new. If you have ever watched a shonen anime before, you will see things here that you have definitely seen before. But that’s okay, because Blue Exorcist does a good job with it’s execution. I understand why this series is so popular and I believe that it is because it feels like a culmination of all the things that shonen fans love. Whether you like delinquent characters, brotherly bonds, cute anime girls or supernatural powers and creatures, Blue Exorcist has you covered.
This is certainly a good watch for shonen fans, but if you are looking for something new – look elsewhere. Not only that but if a lack of dub is deal breaker for you, then maybe it’s best to wait for the dub release. Ultimately Blue Exorcist is what it is, a summation of the best ideas this genre has and for that alone it makes for an enjoyable series to spend some time with, even if it doesn’t shock or surprise you.
Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, JFK, and Narita are just some of the names that come to mind when thinking of international airports, but what makes them so famous and successful? Megacities! These concrete jungles breathe life to airports and vice versa! In Game Insight’sAirport City, which is now available on iPad, players strive to achieve this mutual interdependent relationship between an efficient airport and its neighbouring city. In turn, money earned from the seven different classes of planes can be used to further develop the airport by improving passenger terminals, building more runways and hangers to house the gods of the skies. In addition, players can expand their city by purchasing more land and building residential, commercial and utility structures. Other features of this free-to-play strategy game, originally released for Android devices and social networks, include flight management that will take passengers all over the world, the import of items internationally and the completion of hundreds of quests and tasks for the characters you meet.
There are a few anime series out there which you pretty much don’t want anyone to catch you watching as they would be absolutely terrible to explain, such as Queen’s Blade or Ikki Tousen. Now it seems like another one of these boobalicious anime is going to begin airing in Japan sometime soon.
Then again, given the fact that the anime is actually the Senran Kagura anime, the amount of bouncing breasts and provocative scenes seem adequate enough. For those who don’t know, Senran Kagura is a 3DS game developed by Marvelous Entertainment which currently has a sequel in development, that featured busty ninjas in side-scrolling action. It is worth noting that the below footage is from an attendee at Comiket 82 so the video is a bit low in quality.
If Mugen Souls’ moe characters and visuals weren’t enough to overwhelm you yet, then perhaps the different features talked about in the two trailers released today by NIS America will be able to finish the job. In the first video found below we are treated to some customization footage that allows players to not only change the costumes of the main cast but also create their very own peon from scratch.
Below that video a number of the game’s features and overwhelming damage levels are shown off. Those interested in picking up the title should note that Mugen Souls is a PlayStation 3 exclusive and is set to be released on September 18th.
Racing fans dying to know what it’s like to race through real world cities may finally have the chance to experience it in game, provided they’re okay with it being top-down. Playstos Entertainment has announced that their newest game, Real World Racing will feature the real streets of worldwide cities such as Rome, Paris, London, and Berlin, just to name a few.
Featuring real-live high resolution aerial photos and an engine built to blend them into a playable map with 3D cars and objects, players have the chance to see the realistic scenery rush by as they speed ahead. Additionally, the game will have a career mode, arcade racing, online play, 80 different cars to drive, and weather conditions to stiffen up the competition. With the release of Sleeping Dogs less than a week away that means it is time for the standard launch trailer release for the game and today Square Enix has chosen to abide by this tradition and has released the below action packed launch trailer.
As you can see in the trailer below, undercover cop Wei Shen will have to balance his morals as a police officer between staying alive inside one of the most fearsome criminal organizations in the world. Players will be able to experience viscious hand to hand combat, brutal gunplay and more things that we can mention in one sitting. Players who remember Wings, the WWI fighter plane shooter from 22 years ago, may be interested to hear that Cinemaware is interested in bringing the game back and better than ever. Their hopes are not just to re-release the game with a makeover of graphics, but to add much, much more to the game. New missions, new story elements, enhanced animations, art and sound and additional music tracks are planned to add to the package if Cinemaware can find the funding on Kickstarter. But, fans of the original needn’t worry as the style of gameplay and structure will remain the same.
Pledge amounts vary in reward from a copy of Wings: Director’s Cut on the system of their choice, PC, iOS, or Android; to a collection of digital books related to the game, to a physical replica of the 56th Aerosquadron Journal as seen in the game, all the way to a ride in a WWI-style biplane.

If you ever thought that the Angry Birds game needed a more feminine looking bird to take down those nasty pigs well… you are about to get that bird. Today Rovio revealed that a cute pink bird, so far named “Pink,” will be added into the Angry Birds Seasons version of the game.
The company revealed the existence of this bird through a cute little trailer found below where we see Pink blowing bubbles while also hating on those egg stealing pigs. Currently it is unknown what Pink’s abilities will be, though they probably will involve bubbles of some sort. The exact release of this pink bird update is currently unknown but exciting nonetheless!
If you thought that Rayman: Legends would have an all male cast again then you were wrong, because today Ubisoft released a new trailer showing off a new female warrior called Barbara. As you can see in the video below Barbara looks like a viking warrior and wields an axe.
Currently there are only a few details known about Rayman: Legends, though it is worth noting that the Wii U is the only console that the game has so far been announced for, though with more information promised at Gamescom, we only have a few more weeks of waiting to learn if picking up a Wii U will truly be necessary to play this gem of a game.
