Platforms: iPhone (reviewed), iTouch, iPad
Release Date: September 13, 2012
Price: Free

Overview
Mobile gaming and science fiction gamers rejoice!  The people over at Bulkypix Studios have created a wonderful game called, Soldiers vs. Aliens, in which you must travel to nine different worlds and fight your way through hordes of alien creatures and rescue stranded survivors while you are at it. They also include a very immersive upgrade and customization system for you to spend your in-game currency on.

Story
The game has quite a gigantic story. The game begins with your first mission which is pacifying the aliens from the N.A.C.O. science center. After you complete this mission, you understand why your soldier keeps his helmet on but, that will be a surprise for when you pick up the game.

The game continues on as you get a distress call from a high security transport and you must rescue some survivors. Yes, some of you may be thinking to yourselves, why gee that sounds like it leads to a good story. Well, it does up until you get to a certain point in the game and the missions begin to repeat themselves with you going and pacifying areas in the universe or saving civilians again. This sort of repetition begins to get old pretty quickly.

Gameplay
The gameplay is pretty simple, you move sliding your finger on to the soldier and moving him like that and you then shoot by tapping or holding another finger on the alien you are trying to kill. The gameplay is a little difficult to use at first if your are like me and have ginormous hands but, it does tend to get easier to use over time.

Aside from the campaign mode which was mentioned above, the game includes a survival mode. The survival mode is just like any other type of survival mode you would play but, the enemies get a whole lot more difficult as you progress right up until the point to where you know you have no chance of surviving.

The game has many weapons for you to choose from, each having its own unique firing method so it gives you the feeling that they are all unique in their own way. One of the great things about the weapons system of the game is that you don’t just go into battle with only one weapon, you are able to choose from the list of weapons you have purchased while you are mowing down the aliens with your trigger happy finger. They were also kind enough to include some equipment to use in the game like turrets or grenades but, they have minor affects on some of the more tougher enemies you shall be facing.

The game includes an armor customization also in which you can choose from different types of armor. The only problem with it is that all the armor upgrades upgrade you to the same amount so there is truly no reason to buy more than one armor set.

Visuals
The games visuals are quite nice. Yes, they might not be the best visuals that are out there but they do fit the game. With the detailed varieties of aliens and the armor your solider is equipped with, you can be assured that they are truly one of a kind. The visuals do not lag at all but, I did seem to have some technical glitches at a few points but as I played on they seemed to go away.

Audio
The game has the epic war music you would expect from any game like it. The audio tracks make you feel like you are a soldier about to go to war and face a threat you have never faced before.

The games sound effects are pretty good also. Each guns has their own sound affects and the aliens make a neat little screech when you kill them and splatter their guts all across the floor.

Overall
Soldiers vs Aliens is a pretty good game. With it’s gameplay, audio, the whole nine yards! While the game has some issues, they don’t really seem to harm the game. The game has a so-so story that could do better and some glitchy visuals every now and then but, you can’t say anything bad about the game, the reason being? It’s free. If I were them, I would have given this game an actual price but, you got to love when a good studio like Bulkypix is generous enough to give you it for free. Now get off your butt and stop eating those donuts soldier and prepare to pick up this game!

Lawsuit Delays Marvel ‘Phase One’ Box-Set

After the recent release of the monumental blockbuster The Avengers, on DVD and Blu-ray, hard-core Marvel film fans have had to look forward to September 25th for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled Blu-ray box-set. But now the enticing box set, which includes Iron Man 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel’s The Avengers, has been delayed.

The Tesseract! Not powerful enough to stop a lawsuit?

German luggage company Rimowa GmbH is suing Marvel for using its patented Topas attaché case design in creating their own case, housing the 10 disc, 6 film Blu-ray collection. Samuel L. Jackson used a real Topas attaché case during filming as Nick Fury, hence the continued use of the design. Although Rimowa provided the filmmakers with a genuine case for the movie itself, according to the complaint filed as initially reported by THR, “Marvel did not obtain any license or authorisation from Rimowa to make replica copies of the cases for any purpose.”

Almost an exact replica…

Rimowa’s lawsuit stands on the grounds of trademark infringement, trademark dilution and unfair competition, and the company are looking for a cease action on any further marketing or advertising, and consequently sale, of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled Blu-ray box-set, so long as the case design in question resembles their Topas attaché case.

“Puny lawsuit!”

Now, according to Amazon, “Marvel is planning to offer a similar collection in new packaging. The new collection will include the original titles offered with the first version of the item, and we expect it will be available in the spring of 2013.” Although such a long delay, or any delay at all, is sorely disappointing, it has become clear via a statement made by Disney to IGN that Disney is attempting to make up for the delay by giving customerseven more than the content and features that were first advertised” in the delayed set. Does this make it up to any of you who have pre-ordered the Phase One box-set?

Mutant Mudds’ Bonus Levels coming to the 3DS

Mutant Mudds hit the eShop this year, and brought back an old school vibe that filled our 3D handhelds with hope and nostalgia. Recently, the platformer hit the PC with some extra levels, and Renegade Kid have stepped in to let us with the 3DS version know that we will soon be getting the bonus stages as well, through free DLC.

Jools Watsham, Co-Founder of Renegade Kid sent out this tweet as re-assurement.

All 60 Mutant Mudds levels tested/completed. Looks like this game is nearly ready for eShop prime-time!
Nearly = 4 to 6 weeks btw. Mudds needs to go through Nintendo testing and then get in the queue for update/release.

Awesome to the “Max” indeed. Renegade Kid have been on a roll as of late, and it will be exciting to see just what will be next from the developer on the 3DS (and all other platforms for that matter). When the update for Mutant Mudds goes live, we will be sure to let you know so stay tuned!

Expendables 2 Review

Expendables 2
Studio: Millennium Films
Publisher:  Lions Gate
Format: Cinema
Rated: R
Release Date: August 17, 2012

Overview

Stallone and his star studded team of Expendables are back for yet another action packed non-stop gun blazing adventure in the Expendables 2. The original crew of Barney Ross, Less Christmas, Yin Yan, Gunnar Jensen, Toll Road and Hae Caesar are back joined by two new faces, Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth (Billy The Kid) and Yu Nan (Maggie).  With an unsettled debt, Mr Church (Bruce Willis) tracks, finds and demands that Ross complete one more simple job to pay back the debt that he still owes from their last mission, so the crew have no other choice but to set out and get the job done.  In what should of been a simple get in, get out operation, unfortunately goes horribly wrong and one of Ross’s members is killed. Ross and his team are then compelled to revenge their fallen team mate and take down a formidable enemy in a hostile territory. As always the odds are stacked against them, with a high chance of no one getting out alive, the Expendables do what that do best and that is find them, track them and kill them and get back in time for corn flakes.

Story

In true Expendables fashion the action kicks off straight away as it did in the first movie with the crew deep in enemy territory located in Sindhupalchawk, Nepal on a rescue mission to find and extract a Chinese Billionaire held hostage.  Driving in on three armored vehicles the assault on the enemy base goes off like clockwork, and the crew save not only the Chinese Billionaire but also Ross’s old buddy Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who was on the same mission to save the hostage but got captured and was getting beat up and interrogated. For any action fan out there the opening scene is a thing of beauty especially the added bonus of the one line catch phrases that we’ve heard so many times but never get old.

On the way out Ross and Christmas are ambushed and surrounded by the enemy in what seems to look like a no way out situation. But in the blink of an eye Billy The Kid saves the day and instantly cementing his rightful place as the new member of The Expendables crew. You get to see a whole lot more of Billy’s skills right up till the dramatic escape as Ross constantly emphasises how awesome the Kid is with nearly every shot he pulls off.  With the Chinese Billionaire safe and sound in Ross’s plane, Yin (Jet Li) who I must say certainly was very impressive in the opening few scenes showing off his awesome martial arts abilities, accompanies the Billionaire back home as they parachute their way to safety somewhere over China, unfortunately never to been again for the remainder of the film.

With the opening job done, the main story mission is introduced, Mr Church (Bruce Willis) tracks down and confronts Ross saying that Ross stole the $5 million dollars that he payed him to complete the last mission (The Expendables) that supposedly did not end up exactly how Mr Church had intended it.  With this little unresolved money problem, Mr Church offers Ross a simple straight forward mission of collecting a package located in a high security safe on a plane that crashed somewhere in Albania and returning it back to Mr Church.  The mission is certainly a walk in the park for Ross and his crew so Ross accepts knowing that once this job is done he’s clear of his debt.  Mr Church however adds a wildcard to the mission explaining that Ross must take specialist for the safe cracking job (Maggie) in which Ross is not very happy but can’t do nothing about.

The collect mission actually goes well and the crew successfully break open the safe and obtain the contents within it, but on the way back the crew are confronted by Jean Vilian (Jean Claude Van-Damme) the lead “Bad Guy” for the film who has taken one of the team hostage and threatens to kill him if they don’t hand over the package.  After a tense few minutes of negotiations Jean Vilian and his team obtain package and as he makes his escape via helicopter, but before doing so Vilian heartlessly kills Ross’s crew member as they watch helplessly unable to stop it. At this point the crew are left ponder on what to do next.  Should they (A) Pack up and go home empty handed with their tails between their legs or (B) Find Vilian and his small army, Track them back to their base of operations and Kill them all, collect the package and avenge their fallen team mate.

As this is The Expendables 2, Ross and his team chose option B and head off on a very daring, action packed mission to recover the package stolen from them, take down Vilian’s crew and blow up everything along the way.  The story does slow down a bit during the later part of the movie but then certainly picks up at the end with the final confrontation between Vilian’s small army and Ross’s team who at that point are also aided by Mr Church, Trench (Schwarzenegger) and Lone Wolf (Chuck Norris) which I must say did a fantastic job with his time on screen.  They even had time to throw in a Chuck Norris joke in which certainly had me laughing out loud.  The two final battles between Lee and Hectar were well executed, fight choreography was done remarkably well, but did end a little too quickly.  The final fight between Ross and Vilian was also handled well, but in my opinion ended way too soon.  Being a fan of both Van Damme and Stallone both actors used their trademark moves and the dialog between them both during the final battle was well scripted and also very entertaining.

My only gripe was how Jean Claude Van Damme’s character was handled.  With him being the “Big Boss” there wasn’t enough Bad Boss character development. Certainly he did take down and kill one of Ross’s team mates but that was all we really saw from him until the ending of the film.  What would of been nice was to see Van Damme take down, and hurt more of Stallone’s team. It’s a pitty that Jet Li (Yin Yan) left early into the movie and didn’t return, but a one on one battle with these two famous martial artists, Jet Li and Van Damme where Van Damme could of beaten the Jet Li to an inch of his life would of added a little more value to his character and cemented him as a true Bass Ass Boss ready for Stallone to take him down in the final battle.

Visuals & Audio

The Expendables 2 has it all, if you’re a fan of action movies, then you’ll certainly enjoy every gun shot, every punch and kick, every head shot and all the blood that goes with it. Set pieces and explosions from start to finish look spectacular and very well executed.  Of course for a movie such as this you have to accept a high level of unbelievably but with taking that into consideration The Expendables 2 pulls off these explosions and action scenes remarkably well.  Audio and sound from every gunshot, snapped neck, knife thrust and high powered assault rifle rings in your ears making you feel like your right in the middle of the action alongside Stallone and his merry crew. There were a few times in that dialog couldn’t be heard over the excessive gun shots and explosions but it’s easily forgivable once you see an awesome headshot being pulled off you quickly forget what was just said and marvel at how well the production crew pulled of something that looked so real so quickly.

Overall

Expendables 2 is a must if you’re a fan of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jet Li, Scott Adkins, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Yu Nan, Chuck Norris or Arnold Schwarzenegger.  No other action film out there has all these star studded hard ass movie action actors all under the same roof.  Even though most of the actors are getting on and should be in a museum or retired the novelty factor of seeing your favorite alongside alongside your other favorite is well worth the price of admission alone.  With rumours already in the works that the Expendables 3 will be starting film production at the end of 2012 and stars such as Steven Segal, Nicolas Cage and even Jean Claude Van Damme returning, it looks like Stallone and his merry band of Expendables are not going anywhere anytime soon.

‘The Last of Us’ PAX Prime Demo Footage

At this year’s E3 event back in June, Sony’s press conference highlighted first-look footage at many PS3 exclusive titles. Amongst them was the show-closer, and one of the most talked about gameplay unveils in recent memory in Naughty Dog’s ‘The Last of Us’. Those 7-odd minutes of gameplay had the auditorium in awe as Joel and Ellie traversed a post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh, getting themselves into conflict inside a (once) ritzy hotel with some uncouth scavengers.

Mock bathroom set up at PAX for The Last of Us demos!

Well, just last week at PAX Prime in Seattle, Naughty Dog showed off an extended, alternate gameplay walkthrough of the very same hotel area. The new demo explored a sneakier, stealthier approach to traversal, avoiding most of the scavengers all together, and gave off a more “kill only as necessary” vibe. Command prompts are also visualized for the first time as we get a fuller image of what the game’s final HUD will look like, and how we will interact with the world around us.

Now, where’s that ladder…?

The 15 minute PAX demo also displays a much slower, tense pacing that is more indicative of the final product as the E3 demo was streamlined to fit time constraints for their slot in the press conference presentation. A great example of this streamlining is the placement of the ladder found by Joel and Ellie early on in each demo. In the E3 demo, the ladder was conveniently placed against a wall for the main characters to climb and progress quite quickly. In the PAX demo, the ladder was discovered to be placed on top of some indoor scaffolding, of which Joel and Ellie had to find a way to ascend to reach and attain the ladder, before setting it in the appropriate position to progress further through the hotel. To check out the jaw-dropping (not so) behind closed doors demo for yourself, click the video below!

Gravity Rush character may join PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

It seems that SuperBot Entertainment just can’t keep a lid on their staff, or at least Sony’s staff, because there have been so many rumors leaking out about PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale that one would think it would look like swiss cheese at this point.

The latest rumor happens to be an update to the PlayStation All-Stars website which was very quickly removed. However AllGamesBeta managed to grab an image of the bio stating that Kat, the main character of Gravity Rush would be joining the roster of PlayStation All-Stars. Now the bio itself looks extremely similar to all of the already official bios, and with Kat already being included in the next Hot Shots Golf game, she is quickly becoming a household name. As such it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see this gravity controlling lady as a fighter when All-Stars is released soon, though currently this should be taken as nothing more than a rumor.

Fairy Tail author sketches reveal the female form of Natsu and Gray

You remember an early episode of Fairy Tail where most of the cast had their bodies swapped around so that Gray would be in Lucy’s body and Natsu was Gray? Well what would happen if the Fairy Tail characters happened to have their genders switched around?

Well today Fairy Tail’s author Hiro Mashima took to his official Twitter page to release a handful of sketches of each character’s alternate gender, which can be seen in their entirety below. Of course in the case of Happy, it happened to be a whole species change instead. It would certainly be a censors nightmare if Gray was actually a female all along right? No Erza sketch has been revealed at the moment for fans of the powerful swordswoman.
