Top 5 Reasons Why Kirito Sucks Compared To Haseo

kirito-vs-haseo-001

Both Kirito and Haseo are characters from stories that involve MMORPGs (Sword Art Online and .hack//, respectively), but what makes these two particularly similar (and great for this type of list) is that they both have very similar characteristics and stories. For instance, both characters are black garbed, both have lost a loved one and both primarily use multiple weapons. There are a bunch of other similarities between the characters, but this is not a list about those.

This list chronicles why it is that Kirito sucks in comparison to the superior Haseo character. Read on to find out why that is.

1. Of both multi-weapon users, Haseo has many more weapons.

At a glance, you may think that I have selected this category because Haseo has two weapons from the get-go. However, this is not the case. Any .hack// fan or even anyone that’s played the games will be able to tell you that despite the weapon looking like two daggers, it is essentially one item. This means that it is considered the same weapon regardless of which weapon hits.

sword-art-online12
Oh, only two of the things. Such a disappointment.

However, as you learn throughout the Sword Art Online storyline, Kirito is actually a special kind of user able to use multiple weapons. This puts Kirito at an advantage until you realise what Haseo’s class actually is. He’s something called an Adept Rogue, and as such, is able to switch between the weapon types of different classes but can never use them as effectively as that actual class itself.

So, from a sheer firepower perspective, Haseo is essentially able to switch out to any weapon that he has learned to use in relation to the needs of the battle. However, Kirito is stuck with his dual over-powered swords obtained through luck.

Let’s say that hypothetically both characters were to fight with only weapons and no special abilities. Haseo would be able to wipe Kirito easily, just based on the fact of having a wide array of weapons at his disposal. Even if Haseo were not to use enchanted, Epic, or what have you weapons, he would still be at a distinct advantage.

dot-hack-g-u-trilogy-0023
Guns, daggers, swords, scythes and more, Haseo has got them all.

Also, being able to switch between daggers, swords, scythes, chainswords, guns and more is way more cooler than just having two swords of any rarity. When in doubt, rule of cool.

2. Haseo’s “edgy” look is edgier than Kirito’s.

Edgy is one of those buzzwords that Anime fans like to throw around to indicate that a character is trying to be different by dressing in a cold or dark manner. This is usually thrown around in jest because, really, every character that tries to look edgy ends up dressing in a similar manner and it’s not actually edgy.

However for this comparison, I have taken to using this definition of the term:

  • nervous, apprehensive; : creatively challenging; cutting edge; leading edge; : on the edge between acceptable and offensive; pushing the boundaries of good taste; dodgy

As we can see (refer to the top image), both Kirito(left), and Haseo(right), dress in a manner that fits this definition quite accurately. However, Haseo is dressed far more edgy than Kirito for a number of reasons. The most important of these reasons is that Haseo’s wardrobe actually changes in a way that is more than slightly.

dot-hack-g-u-trilogy-0021
A player in demons clothing.

What I mean here is that throughout the games, the anime series and the movie, you see Haseo go through a number of different outfits. At one point, his outfit is so edgy that he literally looks like he’s wearing the skin of some kind satanic demon rather than any kind of clothing. How is that for maximum edginess? What’s Kirito got? Fabric? Fairy wings (that every other character has)? The same design just reworked slightly?

He has nothing on Haseo in the department of edginess and this is one of the reasons why Haseo is greater than Kirito. So therefore, if Haseo is greater than Kirito in edginess, then Kirito must suck at being edgy in comparison to Haseo.

3. In reference to the aftermath of a coma, Haseo had it much worse.

So we remember in .hack//SIGN that character Sora and how he was killed off towards the end of the series? Well it turns out that he is actually the same person that plays the character of Haseo in .hack//G.U. So make this a little more clear, the same person that plays the character of Sora in the games canon is the same individual that plays the character Haseo in the games canon. So In the first version of [The World] Haseo was the character Sora and in the second version of [The World], [The World: R2], Sora plays the character of Haseo.

Anyway, as we know, both characters were placed into a coma during each of their respective storylines. In Kirito’s story, while he was comatose, he got to have fun and go on magical adventures where every girl in the game wanted to put his penis into her mouth. But for Sora, he didn’t get that at all. Or if he did, there’d be no way he’d be able to remember it.

You see, while Kirito was out there having fun and banging Asuna, Haseo was busy recovering from a traumatic attack that left him with no memories of his past life. So picture this, on one hand, you have a character who’s life has been filled with tapping-booty and on the other you have a character with no memories. Which one would you rather be? You picked Kirito right? I thought so.

sword-art-online-sexy
Booty such as this.

Even though Haseo lost all of his memories, even though he could no longer even recall what memories he had, he still stayed the same person. He even went for a similar look to his previous character, he was still getting all the girls and he was still kind of a douche.

What’d Kirito go through to become cool? Oh that’s right, nothing. If anyone is cooler than Kirito for being in a coma, it’s Haseo.

4. One character killed a guild and murdered an admin to free a girl, one player killed many hundreds of players daily and worked alongside admins to save another.

On the Sword Art Online side of things, we have this guy Kirito and he seems like a pretty cool guy. That’s until you hear about his reputation, anyway. He’s kind of out-casted by the society within the game for using many game altering potential hacks and even withholding life saving information gained from the exclusive Beta test that he was a part of. This labelled him as a “Beater”, which is an amalgamation of beta-tester and cheater. Who would want to be friends with anyone that uses hacks and would keep life saving information away from you? Heck, at one point he gets an entire guild killed because he didn’t want to be outed as the douche that he so sorely is.

dot-hack-gu-wallapaper-001

On the .hack// side of things, we have Haseo. He seems like a bit of a douche until you hear about his exploits in the game. I don’t mean technical exploits either, for while Kirito was busy using game breaking systems, Haseo was doing things based on his skills alone. Do you know how earlier I was saying that Kirito gets an entire guild killed because of his insecurities? Well, Haseo kills an entire guild of Player Killers in one massive battle. That guild? It had over 100 members. If that wasn’t badass enough, this was only one battle of this type and his reputation as the most skillful Player Killer Killer in the game leads us to believe that he has done this before.

Even further, both players had the attention of the admins of either game. In Sword Art Online, the creator of the game, “Kayaba”, had his eyes on Kirito for his special game breaking dual-wielding abilities. Kayaba was also the mastermind behind putting all the players in a comatose state in Sword Art Online. Considering that Kirito had a power that could rival his, he had to have him killed. However, things don’t go as planned when Kirito, using the power of love, once again hacks and breaks the game causing Kayaba to be defeated and enabling Kirito to return to the real world with the rest of the surviving players. This scene, though, is not the one I was thinking of when I added this section. I was thinking of how, once again, Kirito uses the power of love to hack into an unopenable door thanks to more hacks and then he hacks his way up into his girlfriends room with hacks and then in a sword fight against the new bad-guy who’s name I don’t remember, he hacks some more and becomes the uber-hack before killing the villain in the most cliche’d edgy moment ever.

sword-art-online-plot-holes-001

Haseo on the other hand was being watched by the games admins because his character was one of a few that could summon parts of the games code called phases. These phases were once part of the Morganna system, but considering that was destroyed with the previous part of the world, these phases became avatars that players could summon to assist in the battle against system bugs known as AIDA. This makes Haseo cooler because his modifications are system sanctioned and are used to save his beloved in a legitimate and fair manner. Kirito breaks things to win, Haseo wins fair and square.

5. Haseo went from zero to hero not just once, but twice. Kirito had to have his stats carried over to win.

Here I’m referring to the events that take place in the early parts of .hack//G.U. (and late in .hack//ROOTS) and in the middle of Sword Art Online. Kirito is simply not as cool as Haseo because, once again, he uses cheats and hacks in order to be the hero that everyone wants to fellate; even his own sister! It’s okay though because she’s really only just her cousin. However, Haseo not only maxes out his character, but due to a run in with a vagrant program, he has his stats completely wiped, thus making him have to start right from the beginning in order to save his love interest Shino.

dot-hack-g-u-trilogy-008
Someone comes at you with one of these, you don’t stand there and take it.

This means that Haseo has to max out his character again, which he does, which goes to show how much it is that he really cares for Shino. Compare this to have-a-hack Kirito, who never has to go through any bullshit in order to get all the women hanging off his penis, and always starts at maximum stats. Who would you root for? The lazy-ass that just turns up on the day, or the guy that’s been training for years, only to have to train for years again?

I’ve got my money on Haseo, simply because, anyone that has to undergo all that training only to lose it all and then goes through it again, is someone that not only has the skills but also the determination to get things done. This is why Kirito is not as cool as Haseo, he’s a lazy cheater. Haseo on the other hand. Well? He’s the real deal.

Hyperdimension Idol Neptunia PP revealed in Japan

hyperdimension-neptunia-cast

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series has quickly become an annual franchise in Japan but this time around the game may be something a bit different than every Neptunia game before it. According to Game Nyarth, this week’s Dengeki PlayStation has announced that the next Neptunia game is called Hyperdimension Idol Neptunia PP.

Literally zero information is currently known about the game, though Game Nyarth does list the title for the PlayStation 3 but other Japanese sites seem to be just as confused as the rest of the world. Given the above image showing only part of the cast of characters that have been in Hyperdimension Neptunia revealed so far, it could easily be an Idol type of game similar to the Idolm@ster series or a spin-off of a different kind. Any guesses?

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Coming to the Wii U

lego-batman-2-dc-super-heroes-01

Very good news for those looking to add some LEGO to their Wii U collection as Warner Bros. have announced they will be bringing the hit 2012 release to the Wii U. Along with the port job comes some new features as well, such as usage of the Gamepad.

How will this work, you ask?

Players will navigate through Gotham City using an enhanced interactive map and select their favorite DC Comics characters to assemble a powerful team of heroes, all with the use of the controller’s touchscreen.  They can even enjoy the entire game experience on the GamePad in off-TV mode, or have a second player join in on the TV, so they can fight crime together without having to share a single screen.

Yeah, it’s just a port, but a port of a solid product – and more blue cases on shelves is something the Wii U is in heavy need of right now. Expect this new and improved LEGO romp to hit stores this fall.

Toki Tori 2 cuts the Chatter in Exchange for Charms

tokitori2text-01

Good afternoon to all of you hungry Wii U owners out there, or night if you are reading this in the middle of the AM. Here is some interesting news for your mid week concerning the up and coming Toki Tori 2. Today, Two Tribes announced on their blog that the game would feature no text, letting animation and puzzle solving tell the little story that this world has to offer due to the obvious cost issues that surround translation.

Is that a problem? Not at all, I’d say. In fact, it actually makes me want Toki Tori 2 even more as we don’t often see these types of releases exit their safe bubbles, especially on a Nintendo console. So there you have it, folks. No text in Toki Tori 2 – and that is a good thing.

CC Top 10: Top 10 foods in gaming

0

Hey folks. It’s time for another CC top 10 list! With cooking shows all the rage in the modern media in both Australia and the US, I thought, why not make these often droll and over-dramatised shows a bit more interesting? Make some interestingly unique foods! Like the ones in video ga- … wait a minute…

So as you’ve probably guessed, this top 10 list is all about the culinary masterpieces of the gaming world. Now let me specify, unlike many other top 10 foods lists out there, this list is NOT about the top 10 foods to eat while playing video games. We can all agree that pizza, chips and soft drink would win that. Not exactly what you call high class cuisine. No, this list is about the foods that can only really be found in unique incarnations in the universe of various video games. Now, the standard rules of the CC top 10 apply here: I can only include entries from games I’ve played, and I want to restrict it to one per series. Additionally, this is a list about FOOD, not consumables. So things like potions, feathers, flowers and other non-foods are exempt. To start us off, a couple of honourable mentions to:

–Anti-gravity chocolate from Conkers Bad Fur Day, for being an interesting health system that floats in mid air, and provides an explanation of said floating.

–Honeycombs from Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, because it follows the trend of bears eating honey. Right Pooh Bear?

–The Superspicy Curry from Smash Bros Brawl, thanks to its ability to piss off every person that isn’t able to get it for themselves. Especially annoying if grabbed by Metaknight.

Now that those are out of the way, let’s start with our number 10 entry:

10) Rare Candy – Pokemon

rare-candy-01

While eating candy in excess may not necessarily be good for you, it most certainly will be for you Pokemon! Rare Candies are technically a food by virtue of their title, and therefore a reasonable consideration for the tenth spot on this list. If you’ve never played Pokemon, here’s the rundown. Rare Candies are special items that the player can happen upon once every so often (rarely, as the name implies) and increases the level of the Pokemon that eats it by one. This effect will always occur, regardless of experience points, unless the Pokemon is already maxed out at level 100. Each use also provides a tiny bit of health restoration. This level up ability of this miraculous food has been known to be abused in the earlier games, particularly red and blue version. C’mon, you ALL did the Missingno cheat to get 126 of the damn things at once. Admit it.

9) Bananas – Donkey Kong

donkey-kong-banana-hoard-01

Have we ever seen Donkey Kong actually EAT a banana? Not in any instances I can recall, but yet he still hordes the bloody things… If he didn’t want them getting stolen all the time, he should just eat the damn bananas. Just as any platformer series has its collectibles in each level, Donkey Kong’s item of choice just happens to be his favourite food. Collect 100 and obtain an extra life. Pretty standard drill. That is, until they get up and start talking. A banana shaped alien named Xananab was actually featured as a character in Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber. Consider that next time you’re eating a yellow stick of potassium. You might be eating space people!

8) The Chimichanga – Deadpool

chimichanga-01

Okay, so the game isn’t out yet. But if we know anything about the Merc with the mouth, it’s that Chimichangas will feature extensively. For those that don’t know, a Chimichanga is sort of like your standard Tex Mex burrito, just deep fried and filled with ALL of the good stuff. A meaty, veggie, cheesy filling with a generous helping of chilli, Jalapenos and spices. We can only imagine the effects that these “life-changing” foods will have in the game. From health restoration, to damage increases, to temporary invincibility, to the very real possibility of promoting Deadpool’s flatulence and subsequently weaponizing it. And if it doesn’t… well, it totally should.

KILLER FARTS!! That’s be totally awesome!

Yes inner yellow voice. Yes it would be.

7) Chilli Dogs – Sonic the Hedgehog

sonic-chili-dog-01

While kids who grew up watching cartoons in the 90’s already knew about Sonic the Hedgehog’s affinity for the Chilli Dog, it did not become canon in the games until 2008 when Sonic Unleashed was released. However, his love of these meaty treats has become one of the longest running jokes in both the television series and the ARCHIE comics. Additionally, this food obsession was eventually translated into the games. In Sonic Unleashed, which used a rather convoluted experience point system, Chilli Dogs were valuable rewards that provided huge EXP boosts for the hedge/werehog. In Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic was sucked into the Arthurian Legends with enjoying two Chilli Dogs, which he dashes to save from a significant fall. Still not entirely sure how the writers of the cartoons came up with the idea that a hedgehog would be partial to hot-dogs with a chilli and mince garnish. Then again… he’s able to reach those sorts of speed with fire trails behind him… Perhaps those bean products are more powerful than we give them credit for.

6) Mushrooms – Super Mario

mushrooms-01

Ah the iconic mushroom. Promoting the muscle growth in plumbers and extending their life expectancy by an entire 100% Mario’s most famous power-up has certainly evolved in some interesting ways these last few decades. What started out as a simple palette of a red growth mushroom and a green 1-up mushroom has grown to include the poison mushroom, mega mushroom, golden mushroom, striped mushroom, flight mushroom and a bunch of new ones whose effects most of us can only guess at anymore. Not only to these mushrooms provide an excellent food source for our plumber brothers, they also make pretty good fuel for go-karts, giving them a nitrous like boost when consumed by the engine. I still find it a little disturbing that the staple food of the Mushroom Kingdom just happens to be the exact same thing that the locals are made of. Hmmm… Seems that sentient foods are something of a recurring theme in gaming…

5) The Pork chop – Minecraft

minecraft-porkchop-01

In this game, players can subsist off nothing but BACON. Okay, technically it’s a pork chop, but it still comes from the same animal. Until players are skilled enough (and have a thoroughly creeper-proof base) to learn how to cultivate wheat and tend to animals, the humble pork chop is still probably the simplest, easiest and most effective food within the world of Minecraft. Eating a raw piece of pig will grant a small health boost, until you figure out that you can cook the bloody thing for a dose of massive health restoration. Pigs are plentiful in the land and provide some of the best low effort baconish sustenance to be found. Most people in the real world can’t live off bacon alone, but balls to that, this is MINECRAFT. Reality went out the window the moment we started punching trees.

4) Lon Lon Milk – Zelda Ocarina of Time

lon-lon-milk-01

This is a list of FOOD, not POTIONS. Therefore, the blue, red and green potions from Ocarina of Time are exempt from this list of gaming cuisine. Lon Lon ranch is usually the first place that Link is able to pick up a bottle to hold things in for his journey around Hyrule. However, the bottle doesn’t start empty. The first bottle of the game is filled with a generous helping of Lon Lon Ranch’s signature Milk product. Enough for 2 serves of 5 hearts each! That’s 10 whole hearts! Sure the product itself might be rendered inferior once you catch a few life restoring fairies, but still, it’s an iconic food brand in gaming. It’s good enough for the Hyrule Royal Family. It’s good enough for the hero of time. And you don’t see Young Link drinking a fairy in his Smash Bros Melee taunt, do you?

3) Cake – Portal

portal-cake-01

It’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie it’s a lie…

THERE. Now that we’ve got that out of our systems… The enticingly delicious and moist cake. For anyone that has ever played and finished Portal 1, the legend of the cake needs no explanation. For the uninitiated, wondering what the hell this meme was even about: here’s the rundown. Portal players control Chell, a test subject for the rather mysterious Aperture Science Enrichment Centre. Upon completion of the “legitimate” test chambers of the centre, the controlling AI GLaDoS fails in her attempt to kill you for science. Feigning sincerity, she promises you a party and cake if you were to submit to her will and not attempt to escape the freakish test chambers. Naturally, the players have none of it, because it’s obviously a lie. Right? … …right? Well as it turns out, there really was a room with party decorations and cake that gets shown to the player upon completion of the game. It looked like chocolate. Your own fault players. Maybe next time someone throws a party for you, you won’t be so rude as to not attend.

2) The Sandvich – Team Fortress 2

sandvich-01

The Heavy’s food of choice, and popular enough within the TF2 community that it received its own “Meet the” video alongside the rest of the Team Fortress 2 cast. A unique unlockable item for the Heavy class, the choice to take a Sandvich into the field comes at the cost of foregoing one’s shotgun. (Which, to the Heavy is no big loss.) The Sandvich grants the Heavy the ability to self heal themselves back to 100% health, though it takes a few seconds to eat, and shouldn’t be attempted under pressure. And since the Heavy tends to be the character class that dominates the most attention on the TF2 battlefield, the ability to self heal an entire 300 hit points comes in handy. Sandvichs can also be dropped for allies to also self-heal, but only to a limited effect. Heavies are the only class able to draw out the full potential of the bread, diary, veggies and new meats for its full nutritional effect.

1) The Mysterious Wall Chicken – Castlevania

wall-chicken-01

The exact nature of this enigmatic food is still a mystery to many gamers to date, hence the name ‘Mysterious Wall Chicken.” Throughout the insanely difficult Castlevania 1 on the NES, health items were at a premium, and any bit of health restoration that players could find would be an absolute godsend. The most significant health item within the game was the roast chicken, which could be discovered by breaking walls and other areas of the game environment. What’s partially mysterious about the chicken is why it is there at all in Dracula’s castle (since I’m pretty sure Dracula doesn’t eat chicken), but another mystery that arises is how the heck this food is remotely edible after being stored in a brick wall. Seriously it should have rotted without proper refrigeration. And we know bad chicken to be poisonous! The fact that these pieces of poultry were hidden within solid stone still bodes the question of what the developers at Konami thinking when they decided that the most appropriate place to hide a roast chicken was in the wall. This trend has been taken as something of a running joke over the last two decades by gamers, and has been referenced heavily in fan work, and other games since. (For example, Dust: An Elysian Tale references this by providing the exact same food under the exact same name which can only be obtained by breaking down walls.) To the game designers’ credit, the selection of the locales of the wall chicken was pretty clever; often putting them at points where the developers assumed the player would need them most. Most players of the game now have a pretty good idea of where to find the wall chicken now after multiple play throughs, but it still doesn’t detract from the initial question that rattled around in all our heads: “What the heck is chicken doing in the wall?”
