Overview

‘Mass Effect 3: Citadel’ is the final piece of DLC for the trilogy and aims to give players a high end-note to bookend the “Shepard Saga” with, whilst also pulling on a proverbial heart string or two. Adding entirely new locations and reuniting crew members of games past, ‘Citadel’ packs a lot of content with its whopping 2-part, 4GB download size. But how does this content fare in providing fans the send-off they deserve…the one they were promised? Read on to find out.

Story

Like many other missions and DLC begin, Shepard receives a new email at his private terminal. This time, the message is from Admiral Hackett, who has ordered the Normandy into the Citadel dry-dock for repairs. He also tells Shepard to visit Admiral Anderson’s apartment in the wards, but doesn’t say exactly why. Succeeding Shepard’s arrival, Anderson makes contact via video feed all the way from Earth. He expresses to Shepard that he no longer needs the place as he just can’t leave Earth again, not after this war. Littered throughout the apartment are audio logs featuring Anderson reflecting upon his life and career. Entering the rumpus room (of sorts), you discover why as the first half of an exclusive ANN interview with the Admiral can be played on the TV screen in the room. The interview was interrupted with the arrival of the Reapers.

Soon, Shepard receives an email at his private terminal – which is situated in that same room. It’s an invite from Joker for a meal at the local sushi restaurant, Ryuusei, which is on the Silversun Strip. After you arrive, the two quickly deduce that they were both sent identical emails that neither physically typed up. One Maya Brooks – Staff Analyst of Allegiance Intelligence – frantically scrambles to reach the duo, informing them that someone has hacked Shepard’s accounts and is trying to kill him. This is when all hell breaks loose…it was an ambush. After fighting his way out of the establishment – and through their fish tank floor – Shepard continues on towards a shuttle bay, which is where a returning Wrex (if he is alive in your continuation) saves Shepard from another attack and helps him escape.

Mass-Effect-3-Citadel-01

At this point, the rest of your current crew arrive at your newly acquired apartment to help track down the identity thief and get some revenge. The soldiers who attacked Shepard are of an organisation called CAT6. They were armed with high-grade silenced pistols, M-11 Suppressors, which do massive damage (one of only two new weapons along with the M-7 Lancer). After Shepard picked one up during the initial gun fight, Liara gets Glyph to analyse it and the resulting information leads them to a local casino owner named Elijah Khan, who is a weapon smuggler. This is where things get truly interesting, and so I won’t spoil any more of the main plot. I will say, however, that the culprit is a familiar face…and most certainly not one that you would expect. What I will write about is the stuff after the action portion of the DLC…

Once that plot line is carried through, the crew finally make use of their supposed free time to relax, catch-up and bond before the upcoming climactic battle with the Reapers. First of all, I don’t understand how they could even be afforded such luxuries when considering the situation at hand…but, then again, this whole DLC is very light-hearted and does not take itself seriously at all. The shore leave is just a story device to give the fans that chance to say goodbye to the characters they’ve grown to love over the years and should be appreciated as such. I played Citadel as its own contained experience, so I only ever travelled between the apartment and the Silversun Strip. But, with each return to the apartment, I would receive new emails from crew members – past and present – who wanted to meet up.

You are able to call specific parties up to your apartment, but are must also meet others out in different areas of the strip (if you desire to at all). These rendezvous are sometimes downright hysterical. For instance, Kaidan stops by to cook dinner for the two, which Shepard grills him on, quipping, “All these close calls I’ve had, only to be taken out by dinner….Can it at least be quick and painless?” And yes, I had to use “grills” in that sentence. There are also a couple sombre moments, the biggest of which involved Thane’s son Kolyat organising a memorial for his Father. Shepard and the entire crew speak highly of Thane before Kolyat pulls you aside to present some video messages from Thane that never got through to Shepard. Watching these was a sad moment, but knowing that you got to visit him after they were recorded lifts that sadness, at least slightly.

Mass-Effect-3-Citadel-02

Once you are ready, you can buy party provisions and make preparations for the extravaganza. You have the ability to pick and choose who to invite, so your experience may well differ from mine. Friendly advice: invite Grunt…ever seen a Krogan wasted? This is your chance! Anyway, as the night progresses, people become more inebriated and free to act a fool. The night is recorded via a group photograph that stays on one of the television sets through to the next morning. Once the dust has settled, you are tasked with investigating the aftermath, which accommodates some more memorable scenes. It’s only here that you can discover a bedside data-pad sent by Mordin that holds some of his recordings, which are always entertaining. Finally, the crew prepare to board the Normandy for possibly the final time as Shepard and his love interest share a brief, reflective moment on the D24 docking bay.

Gameplay

For the first section of gameplay, you are mostly using the brand new M-11 Suppressor as its silencer allows you to progress stealthily towards your escape route. This is the first true stealth section I can remember in a Mass Effect game, at least for a long time. The theme of stealth rears its head again as you infiltrate the Silver Coast Casino. There, you must mingle with patrons as Brooks makes her way to the ventilation duct upstairs. Subsequently finding it rigged with an alarm, Liara then hands you a device that allows sight of the electrical wiring in the floors, as well as the direction that security and cameras are looking so that you may locate the relative circuit boxes controlling the alarms and said cameras. There are a few circuit breakers that need to be hacked, but with security all over, you must send your accomplice to distract the desired guard while you do so.

There is no real challenge in this up until the final room which is blocked off by a motion sensor. Here, there is one stationary guard, one patrolling guard and two cameras. These sections are not too long or involved, but they are nice pace-breakers which provide something new in the way of gameplay that is relatively well done. In regards to gun-play, the CAT6 mercenaries – who are dishonourably discharged Alliance soldiers – are formidable foes, especially on the higher difficulty settings. There are three types of CAT6 enemies: the Heavy, the Sniper and the Specialist. The Heavies are particularly tough as they carry ballistic shields that can take a lot of punishment. The Specialists are also troublesome as they deploy Disruption Drones which do heavy damage with a kamikaze-like attack.

Mass-Effect-3-Citadel-04

The Silversun Strip is home to the Silver Coast Casino and Castle Arcade, both of which enable completely new experiences for the player. You can earn some credits in a game of Quaser, Roulette or Varren Racing in the casino or try your hand at Shattered Eezo (fighting simulator), Relay Defence (tactical line defence) or the Claw Game (we all know how those work) in the arcade. But, you will almost undoubtedly spend the most time at the Armax Arsenal Arena, where you can set battle conditions and enter a simulation against three waves of your chosen enemies. Depending on your score, you will earn either a Bronze, Silver or Gold token which can be redeemed for prizes which vary from additional Squad Members to Maps and Enemy Combat Sets. Following each battle, you will receive a private email from a fan or otherwise who will request you complete a battle under their specified conditions. They will rewards you with a myriad of things, from money to weapons modifications – of which there are 7 in this DLC.

Finally, we come to the party at the conclusion of the DLC. Now, there is not much in the way of actual gameplay here, but I just wanted to note a few things. Firstly, the party proceeds in stages which can be managed by specifying to Glyph whether or not you want a quiet time or a rowdy time. There are also many instances where two or more individuals are having a “friendly debate” and you must choose sides, much like in the main game where you could support one person’s argument over another. There is one mini-game (if you can call it that) involving James Vega that actually occurs during your separate hangout session where he spots your gym equipment in one of the bedrooms and challenges you to beat his chin-up record of 182. I thought I could initiate the pull-up sequence and then time would flash forward to Shepard surpassing that record, but I was instructed to alternate pulling the left and right triggers (Paragon and Renegade prompts) all 183 times…and there was no achievement attached to it! I spent 15 minutes doing that! Damn Bioware!!!! But the accompanying dialogue was funny enough to keep me entertained during.

Visuals & Audio

Mass Effect has always had a very consistent, hard, futuristic sci-fi look which carries on from the level/environmental design through to the colour palette. In Mass Effect 3, to reflect the dire tone of the story, there were less vibrant locations to explore. Citadel works to change that with the Silversun Strip, which is a colourful, neon-heavy mirror of our own Vegas Strip, though much shorter. Even your personal apartment presents a completely different atmosphere, feeling like a bachelor pad of sorts – though with a lot less tacky furnishings. Speaking of which, its furniture can be customised but only to a very limited extent. The additional items do little to change the overall visual motif of the hangout, and the changes to the decorations that I made actually reverted back once the party mission had started (although, only for that mission).

Mass-Effect-3-Citadel-03

The expert teaming of Sam Hulick, Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan has returned and once again resulted in some fantastic musical pieces. In your personal apartment, up-beat, dance/electronica tracks can be cycled via stereo controls in numerous rooms. They are a big part of the ensuing party’s atmosphere near the end of the game, especially as everyone gets rowdier and begins to dance the night away. As a somewhat hidden feature (could easily be looked over), more tracks can be unlocked by winning them as prizes in the claw game at Castle Arcade. The ‘Combat Theme’ plays like a dance track with its techno-inspired “drum and bass” beat, slight phasing and reverb, but it works. However, the emotional tunes always stand out to me the most, and in Citadel there are a couple of gems in particular.

“Lost in You” is a lighter, brighter version of the emotional “Lost Without You” from Mass Effect 3. There’s also a song that plays as the crew board the Normandy after their shore leave is over, resigned to the probability that this could be the last time they all see each other…it comprises solely of strings and piano, and is very powerful. Finally, in-game, Liara plays a piano solo version of Vigil from the original Mass Effect soundtrack, which is resonant and beautiful – definitely the highlight of the OST for me. With all that being said, unfortunately, audio is also the only department that had any failings as I experienced multiple audio glitches and jumps – the worst of which was the unintentional overlaying of the ‘Normandy track’ with the previous scene’s that really wrecked the mood of the ending.

Overall

Mass Effect 3: Citadel is an amazing, hilarious, fulfilling chunk of fan service that is sure to put smiles on every Mass Effect player’s face. Simply put; this is Bioware’s love letter to us, to the trilogy that has helped define their legacy and to Commander Shepard. Citadel is brimming with call-backs to fan-favourite moments, basically being one giant ‘Easter Egg’. Want to know what EDI thought of specialist Traynor finding her voice attractive? Want to hear another of Mordin’s famous songs? The list goes on and on…there are so many awesome homages, references and uproarious one-liners and conversations here that will have you reflecting on the good times – although, once it’s all over, the melancholy kicks in. I wanted the party to continue forever…now the mourning has started all over again. ‘I won’t say it’s been easy, but we’ve had a good run…the best’.

A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda EX announced for release on XBLA

extinction-agenda- (4)

Today Aksys Games has announced that they will be bringing a unique looking game to the Xbox Live Marketplace sometime this summer. The game is called A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda EX and if that sounds a bit familiar to you, then you may have heard of the original version of the title, A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda, which was released a couple of years ago on the PC.

The title is being developed by Extend Studio and Orgio Games and will feature a number of new weapons, enemies and exclusive areas as well as a brand new soundtrack and upgraded visuals. To go along with the game’s announcement, Aksys released a number of screenshots for the title which you can check out below.

Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons Walkthrough Trailer

Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons, a new game from developer Starbreeze Studios and publisher 505 Games, has just gotten a walkthrough trailer to show off and make sure players understand the game’s key feature.  As can be deduced from the title, the game has two main characters an older and younger brother, but this game is not at all a co-op game.  Players will in fact be tasked with controlling both brothers at the same time with a single controller.

Those getting concerned about how a game like that will be able to play shouldn’t worry too much as the walkthrough trailer mentioned above shows not only how easy it is to control both characters, but why it is important for a single player to control them both.   The controls themselves are simple and intuitive enough, just watching the video makes it easy to wrap your mind around it.  Besides just the core gameplay, Brothers will also include an emotionally deep story set within an immersive environment without the need of a HUD.

Being lead by Swedish director Josef Fares, Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons will be coming to XBLA, PSN, and PC via Steam in Spring 2013.  Players can click the images in the gallery for a more detailed look at the game and watch the walkthrough trailer embedded below.

Laike’s PC Download Deals 03/08/2013

arma-3-deal

Winter will not die here. It keeps coming back like a zombie. So I guess I have an excuse to stay inside and play more video games!

Steam has introduced week long deals, joining their weekend/midweek madness sales and daily deals. These don’t seem to be advertised as openly as the other deals that are easily found on the front page. This week, Tropico 4 and all of its DLCs are on sale. If you’re a huge fan of Tropico 3 or you are waiting for the SimCity servers to finally start working (yeah, I just went there!), check out Tropico 4. I highly recommend purchasing the Collector’s Bundle. For an extra $2.50, you get all the DLC. Modern Times is a must purchase for the game and is worth $4.99 on its own.

The weekend deals is Football Manager 2013, a staple management sim that puts players behind the soccer bench. It’s 50% off, definitely on the low end of the pricing spectrum as far as this game goes. Personally, I’m not a huge football fan, so I couldn’t appreciate the series enough to play for any length of time. But it is definitely a dense, information heavy game. If you plan on buying it, skip down to Greenman Gaming, as they have a cheaper offer. The Max Payne franchise is on sale this weekend for 66% off. Max Payne 3 and all of its DLCs is at some of its lowest prices yet. I would skip on buying Max Payne 1 and 2 as its gone down to 75% before. I enjoyed Max Payne 3, although I wasn’t a huge fan of the bright colours of the Brazil. Check out our review of Max Payne 3 here.

Greenman Gaming has some interesting titles on sale this weekend. They are running another 20% off coupon, make sure you use  GMG20-P4DLK-FKYRS at checkout! Football Manager 2013 is also 50% off this weekend, when bundled with the 20% off coupon, its a much better deal than Steam’s offer. Tripwire Interactive’s two big shooters are both 75% off this weekend. Killing Floor is their undead slaughtering co op shooter. If you enjoy Left 4 Dead’s defensive finales and aren’t so hot on the moving from place to place parts, Killing Floor is probably for you. They’ve recently introduced Steam Workshop which definitely squeezes some extra mileage out of the game. Red Orchestra 2 is also on sale for 75%. If you’re looking for a hyper realistic shooter but find Arma II’s controls are too overwhelming, Red Orchestra 2 is an excellent choice. From Dust is also 75% off. Its an excellent atmospheric game cripped by some pretty frustrating DRM. Bulletstorm is also 60% off at Greenman Gaming this weekend. I really enjoyed the single player portion of Bulletstorm. Its extremely crass, ridiculous, and utterly fun. I wouldn’t have recommended it at full price, but is definitely worth it at 66% off.Check out all of Greenman Gaming’s weekend sales here.

Speaking of Arma, Arma III‘s alpha began this week. Bohemia Interactive is taking a page out of the Minecraft playbook and offering the alpha and beta versions of the game at a steep discount. Those who purchase during the alpha will be charged $32.99 USD and will have access to the alpha, beta, and full game. Those who buy during the beta will pay $44.99 and then the game will be $59.99 on release. Arma III is still a dense military simulator, but the controls have been simplified in comparison the Arma II, feeling a bit closer to the newer Operation Flashpoint games. If you find Battlefield 3 is still too arcade like for your tastes or you enjoyed Red Orchestra 2, I highly recommend Arma III. Right now the alpha is still very glitchy, features are still missing, and the game only ships with 4 gameply demos, but it also comes with a full scenario editor and modding functionality built in. Buy early, save yourself some dough!

Origin is running a Mass Effect anniversary sale. All three games are steeply discounted, and the the whole trilogy can be purchased for $25.00. I’ve been dragging my heels on playing Mass Effect 3, but Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 easily make my favourite games of all time list. I highly recommend the series.

Get Games is running a Strategy Sale this weekend. There are a ton of strategy games on sale, both big and small. Bigger names include Heroes of Might and Magic VI Gold Edition, RUSE, and Disciples III all for 75% off. Most of the gamers are older titles, so they can almost all be had for $7.49 or less each.

Hellsing Ultimate Collection 1 Blu-Ray review

hellsing-collection-1-cover-01
Hellsing Ultimate Collection 1 Blu-Ray
Studio: Gonzo
Publisher: Madman Entertainment
Release Date: Out now
Price: $59.95 Available here

Overview

Hellsing is an anime series about all things supernatural. Vampire lords, crazily religious regenerators, zombies, ghouls and every other many of nasty creature that goes bump in the night. Based on the widely popular Manga series of the same title, Hellsing has seen two different anime incarnations in recent years: The original anime run by the same name, and the later OVA collection labelled as ‘Hellsing Ultimate’ (similar to Full Metal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood.) Amongst fans, Hellsing Ultimate is still widely regarded to be the superior of the two incarnations. Featuring the first four fifty-minute length OVA’s of the series, Hellsing Ultimate Collection 1 offers itself as the perfect introductory collection to the series. If you think that the good and terrifying name of vampires have been desecrated in recent memory by a book and movie franchise that shall remain nameless *coughtwlightcough*, then Hellsing Ultimate promises to restore that faith.

hellsing-ultimate-screen-01

Story

The plot of Hellsing Ultimate is set in a universe where monsters run rampant throughout the world, and a mysterious organisation manipulating is powers beyond the average man’s mortal understanding. The only organisation that can keep this madness in check is the order of Protestant Knights, Hellsing, and their secret weapon: a vampire named Alucard.

From the very first episode, viewers will see that Alucard is not your average bloodsucker. Unlike many of his kin, he willingly follows the orders of humans, and protects them rather than hunt them. He drinks donated blood out of blood packs and doesn’t take pleasure in killing humans. (Well, okay, that’s not technically true. He very clearly enjoys his job when it involves killing of non-innocents.) He is also absurdly powerful gun-wielding hunter whose mentality borders on madness. Honour bound to the Hellsing organisation, Alucard travels the world taking care of any problems of a supernatural nature as their number one field agent.

hellsing-ultimate-screen-09

We are later introduced to a number of other key players within the organisation, including Hellsing’s leader, an ex-vampire hunter turned housekeeper, a former policewoman turned vampire fledgling and a French gun-for-hire who runs support for the rest of the group. However, it is revealed that Hellsing are not the only organisation using super powered individuals to their advantage. The Catholic Church and their Iscariot organisation also have their own secret weapons, chief among them Father Anderson, a warrior priest with supernatural powers, and Alucard’s main rival of the series. With the relationship between the two groups strenuous at best, a sudden surge in supernatural incidents and crimes leads them to uncover a sinister plot by another particularly famous historical regime that would see the world plunged into chaos.

The collection takes on a violently unique look at both supernatural legend, and the belief systems of several dominant religious organisations. The series isn’t afraid to challenge the notion of classic good vs. evil, and is quite happy when it comes to venturing into religiously blasphemous territory. All four episodes feature numerous instances of pure, bloody mayhem. To the kind of fans who grin wildly at over-the-top moments of violence coupled with purely badass execution of said violence, then this is certainly a series for you. Hellsing does a great job at making this excessive level of violence just seem downright COOL.

hellsing-ultimate-screen-08

The namesake of the series ‘Hellsing’ is derived from the name of the founder of the Hellsing organisation, the famous vampire hunter who defeated Dracula in legend (or Alucard in this case.) Speaking of Alucard, he is easily one of the show’s selling points. He was voted Best Male Character for the Japanese Animation Awards in 2008, and watching this first collection, it’s pretty apparent why he’s so popular. His personality quite deep and complex, displaying a side that’s honourable, philosophical and well mannered, while at the same time sadistic, arrogant and violently gleeful. His abilities are powerful and unique, but not without limitations, and the execution of his job he performs with a just the right mix of satisfaction, joy and madness.

Visual

Hellsing Ultimate has really come far in terms of its graphic evolution from the original Hellsing anime release. The character detailing is a significant improvement over the original with much better defined colours, outlines and animation flows. Environments are highlighted as dark and edgy with stark colours to help differentiate the significant colours and styles of the foreground. The visual quality of the Blu-Ray release even improves over the original with a sharper and clearer picture quality that really makes the visual stand out, especially the special effects. The entirety of the collection invokes a mood of darkness, best expressed through the abundance of long and over-cast shadows in environments and more often than not having said shadows juxtaposed by pools of recently split blood.

hellsing-ultimate-screen-06

Character designs are animated particularly well too, with many of the lead cast featuring distinctive looks and features. Up-close shots really make an effort to accentuate facial expressions to convey emotion on the parts of the characters. Most often this is evident in Alucard’s mad grins, the monstrous teeth of vampire feasting scenes and in the fear in the faces of those to be feasted upon. Alucard’s predominantly red attire truly stands out in a dark and gritty sort of fashion, whereas other characters like the light hearted Seras portray a brighter and more wacky visual style that compliments her role as comedic relief in the series.

A tip for parents, you REALLY want to check the OLFC rating on this one, because when the rating says “Strong Violence”, don’t take it as a suggestion. It genuinely means it. Hellsing Ultimate is one bloody piece of entertainment. The level of violence is not what you call realistic, but this works to the shows favour. Over the top violence works well when it does not invoke realism to the extent that it makes the audience nauseous or queasy. The typical violent scene, probably best accentuated in episode 2 involve cuts, gashes and explosions that reduce many to clouds and pools of red, but no exposure to ultra realistic elements like bones and torn flesh.

Audio

hellsing-ultimate-screen-03

It must be said straight off the bat that Crispin Freeman’s voice work as Alucard is nothing short of spectacular. The characterisation of this sadistic, bloodthirsty protagonist in voice alone is intimidating. As the lead character, his voice carries traces of the similar theme of madness and mayhem held throughout whilst still retaining quite a lot of sophistication and charm. As a whole, performances like this are why SUB fans are missing out. The rest of the cast are also very well adapted into English, with the exception of a few odd lines that are more likely than not a simple case of poor translation.

The musical quality is also quite good, though nothing that will blow the minds of the viewers. The music often has a dark swing put on the events of the plot, which work in tandem with the shadowy visuals quite well. Vocal tracks are often well implemented to compliment the religious undertone of many of the action scenes, particularly the ones that occur involving Iscariot and situations of divinity. Alucard’s own theme is a well-paced, sophisticated sounding Jazz piece which belies his sadistic and violent side. The track still compliments his character very well based on his characterisation as the series protagonist. The main theme of the collection is an interesting similar sounding jazz piece with a spooky vocal undertone, providing a fantastic atmosphere of foreboding violence, which is sure to ensue.

Extras

hellsing-ultimate-screen-02

Hellsing Ultimate boasts quite the extras package in the Blu-ray release. Special features include many of your standard Madman release pieces, like promotional trailers, Japanese commercials and extensive commentaries by the English dub cast. However, this collection also contains a number of other surprisingly entertaining bonus features. Chief among them is a karaoke version of the Major’s speech from Episode four. Having this villainous rant played for us in song is pure delight, even if a bit oddly uncomfortable considering the subject matter of the lyrics. The extra section also features a recorded panel event from Anime Expo 2007, where the English voice cast addressed fan questions and performed their VA duties in signing and stopping for photographs. The extra section also includes a Geneon Booth section which takes viewers on something of a virtual tour of the Hellsing mansion, explaining its history and significance to the story.

Overall

hellsing-ultimate-screen-07

Hellsing Ultimate is undoubtedly a series that appeals to a certain kind of anime fan. The series as a whole is a complete rollercoaster of madness and mayhem. The kind that where you can’t help but laugh maniacally when you see the lead character tear down scores of pitiful resistance. The comedy to action to drama ratio is very well balanced in this series. Sometimes it will make you gasp. Other times it will make you chuckle. But most of the time it will make you grin and laugh with Alucard-esque fervour. The series is undoubtedly enjoyable, and it will make you feel just the tiniest bit disturbed and guilty for thinking so. A thoroughly entertaining descent into madness and violence as a whole, Hellsing Ultimate is definitely one collection that you should check out and bring out a little of that inner insanity.

Hell on Earth has arrived. And his name is Alucard.
