Pokemon X and Y Save Game Glitch

The dreaded Lumiose City!
The dreaded Lumiose City!

Pokemon X and Y has been out for little under a week at this point in time and, let me just say, we’re all very lucky that this glitch was discovered sooner rather than later. Basically there has been reports coming from around the globe of people not being able to load their Pokemon X and Y (you can read the reviews here and here) save data after previously saving their game in Lumiose City. If you’re not too sure which one Lumiose City is; it’s the big town that looks a great deal like Paris and you fight the Electric Gym leader there. Players have stated that after saving in the city and returning to their 3DS to begin playing again their console acts unresponsive and their save game never loads, people have come to the conclusion that the only way to continue playing the game is to delete your old save data and start again…unfortunately.

- Spots NOT to save in Lumiose City -
– Spots NOT to save in Lumiose City –

The picture you can see just above this little paragraph is Nintendo’s response to these “rumours” of save game glitching, as you can see in the pictures there are three pokeball legends that indicate where it is NOT safe to save. If you’re in the Lumiose area I suggest you take a glance at the image and work around it accordingly. I didn’t have this problem while playing in Lumiose City but a LOT of people did so just be careful while travelling through the big city.

J-Stars Victory Vs. – Femme Fatales Added To The Mix

Boa-Hancock-anime-01

Up until this point Namco Bandai’s upcoming PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita fighting game J-Stars Victory Vs has, pretty much, been dominated by a male roster, well now that’s about to change because we’ve just caught wind of some super sexy ladies who will be kicking butt alongside these juggernauts of Anime and Manga. One Piece’s Boa Hancock, Bleach’s Rukia Kuchiki, Nisekoi’s Chitoge Kirisaki and To Love-Ru’s Lala Satalin Deviluke will be the first group of ladies to make the jump to the game.

J-Stars-Victory-Vs-01

All of them, apart from Boa Hancock, will be Support Characters only. Boa Hancock will be a fierce fighter with her Mero mero Sweet Wind attack that can turn enemies into stone alongside a flurry of other techniques that’ll be used in battle against the other character. The support characters aren’t too far from great either with Rukia being able to freeze enemies, Chitoge can disable the use of support characters for your opponents and Lala can heal you as she cheers along. Another great update for this piece of news is that a release date has finally been announced, J-Stars Victory Vs is set for a release on the 19th of March 2014 so start getting pumped up for the release and keep your eyes on the site for any and all news and information to be released.

Mega Dead Pixel Review

 Mega-Dead-Pixel-01

Mega Dead Pixel
Developer: About Fun
Publisher: Chillingo
Platforms: iOS (iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad) – Reviewed on iPad
Release Date: 17th October 2013
Price: Free – Available Here

Overview
Video games have progressed in leaps and bound since the dawn of their creation. Its become that game characters are so realistic that they bear the likeness of real people. Millions of points of detail are used to create these true to life figures…But that’s a lot of effort. Why bother when you can have boatloads of fun with just one pixel?

Mega-Dead-Pixel-02
Sweet headphones pixel bro

Gameplay
Mega Dead Pixel is a genre unto itself. A self proclaimed Arcade Retro Pixel Endless Faller, or AARPEF for short, the game provides you with your own little one by one pixel buddy to control. You may move Pixel left and right with the directional arrows provided, whilst you automatically fall downwards. The main aim of the game is to fall and try your hardest not to die, a simple principle. Littering the screen however, are a number of obstacles designed to impede your descent. These objects take a number of shapes, from swords, to space invaders, to simple one by one pixels just like you…but stationary and evil. By touching the edge of these shapes on your eternal journey downwards, you are able to paint them to increase your score. This is a dangerous game, as one column too far and pixelly death shall rain down. You can, however, boost your defensive capabilities by collecting white pixels scattered across the level. For each collected, Pixel will increase in size. The larger you make him, the faster he will fall. Whilst this makes the game a tad harder, it also provides you with the ability to take hits equivalent to your new size. Each time larger Pixel suffers damage, he will whittle down until he returns to his basic form.

Mega-Dead-Pixel-03
Colours and shapes a plenty

On the topic of size, you may also have the chance to activate a super ability, known as Mega-Pixel. By painting a number of objects in rapid succession, Pixel will transform into a massive size and fall…fast. Be careful though as you shred through the screens as, along with racking up mondo points, you will very quickly whittle Pixel down into little Pixel. There is no amount limit to this power, so feel free to use it as many times as you want per level, though you’ll have to paint fast. You are also capable of destroying shapes whilst not in Mega-Pixel mode, though you will need to upgrade your form. Essentially you trade white pixels for objects as you crash through them, though the score you gain is directly proportionate to the size of the object. You may also gain additional objects to spread across levels by purchasing them with the currency of the game: gold pixels. Sensing a pattern here?

Along with additional shapes, gold can also be used to purchase music, revive tokens and even hats for Pixel, to liven up your day. However, there’s one thing that every gamer understands and wants: power-ups. As you progress through the game and build up a nice little stockpile of gold, you gain access to bonuses that will be added to each level. You may acquire an increases painting range, an invincible shield, pistols for shooting and even an instant Mega-Pixel power. Naturally these are time limited power-ups, so use them wisely.

Mega-Dead-Pixel-04
Now that’s one mega pixel

With each level you complete, you are presented with missions to complete. Starting off easy, they can be as straight forward as falling one hundred metres in a single drop. As you complete them, they progressively become more difficult. After a certain point, the game provides you with three missions to complete in each run…if you are able. They also mix it up a little with new objectives, like painting twenty five blocks, reviving yourself and activating Mega-Pixel. These give the game a bit more variety, providing you with goals to accomplish…whether or not you can actually do it is up to you though. Every point you earn throughout your numerous runs gathers in a single pool. Once you reach a certain threshold a Pixelwall is unlocked, granting you a new object in the Shop along with a special background. The game also explains that when you reach a certain total score, you will unlock a secret. I wonder what it might be.

Mega-Dead-Pixel-05
What a well hatted fellow

Visuals and Audio
Centring around a single pixel protagonist, Mega Dead Pixel possesses a naturally simplistic style. Pixels everywhere. Shapes made of pixels, coins made of pixels, protagonist made out of pixels…pixels. This, quite obviously, gives the game an old schools style, which it is fully aware of. Note the Space Invaders whip scattered amidst the obstacles. That being said, the game certainly is colourful. With our hero and all related power-ups being white, it isn’t difficult to tell which pixels to aim for. This also contrasts with the black pixel objects, immediately showing you which objects to avoid…or just barely touch in order to paint them multicolours.

The game also throws a techno/chiptune soundtrack at you to draw you into this pixel world. Featuring ten tunes in all, there’s a fair variety to listen to. There is also an option for you to choose which song you want to hear as you play, with a randomise option included. During each level, you will also notice  sound effects as you perform various tasks. Each of these are different enough from each other that you will immediately know what just happened, be it good or bad.

Mega-Dead-Pixel-06
A regular pixel artist

Overall
Mega Dead Pixel is simple, both gameplay wise and visually…and that’s part of what makes it so damn fun. The game knows what it is and plays to it beautifully. Its colourful, provides you with enough incentives to want to play it and has some pretty sweet chiptune beats. You fall, you paint, you explode, you start over again.

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 2 – The Battle For Doldrey Blu-Ray Review

 Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-00

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 2 – The Battle For Doldrey
Studio: Studio4°C
Publisher: Madman
Format:
DVD, Blu-Ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: 16th October 2013
Price: $34.95 – Available Here

Overview

Much like what is being done with the “Rebuild Of Evangelion” movie series it seems as though the veteran Anime/Manga Berserk is also being remade into a line of high-action, beautifully animated films that will bring the old story into the new generation in a way that only movie remakes seem to be able to do. As part of the Reel Anime 2013 set of screenings, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 2 – The Battle For Doldrey is the most recent, Western-released, film in the new “Golden Age Arc” of movies. It is an incredibly straight-forward film that really leaves nothing to the imagination and it is highly obvious that it is for an older audience. I was given the Blu-Ray version of this movie to review and, while it seemed to lack certain things, it was a great pleasure viewing it. Read on to see my full thoughts on this release.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-01

Story

I want to start off by just outlining the fact that I have NOT seen Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 1 which, now that I’ve seen this one, I will definitely seek out and watch. The point of me outlining that fact is that it seems as though this movie is directly connected to it’s predecessor, that’s obvious, and while there is a large gap of years between the events of the first and this film it is still obvious that one must watch it from the very beginning so as to understand more of the story and of the ways that characters interact because, without that previous knowledge, it is a little hard to settle in. Because this movie is in a line of movies that intend to cover a great deal of the series’ stories I really can’t get into a lot considering the impact of these movies becomes heavier if they’re all watched in sequence, as a person who hasn’t done this it is, once again, very obvious.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-02

The story follows Griffith, Guts and The Band of Hawks who are a team of highly trained soldiers that work under the lead of Griffith and the command of Guts, both of which seem to be of great importance to the series. Guts WAS an incredibly skilled mercenary but it seems as though Griffith has employed him to work with The Band of Hawks because of his combat prowess and incredible power on the battlefield. This movie focuses on the taking of a mighty castle, Doldrey, and how it is up to The Band of Hawks to do what has not been done for hundreds of years; overcome the castle of Doldrey’s forces and make it their own. This seems like a basic description of the story but, essentially, this IS the story and I don’t think it needed to be any more than it was. The film ends on a cliffhanger, an extremely erotic (watch the movie) and brutal cliffhanger that, as a long-time fan of Anime, I can see leading into something epic and extraordinary.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-03

What I enjoyed about the story was that there wasn’t a great deal of dialogue and there wasn’t a great deal of overly-descriptive explanation by characters yet I understood what was going on the whole time which I think is really good for a medium like film. Characters didn’t seem to have much depth to them, characters apart from the main three or so, and that was a little bit disappointing yet this movie was extremely action-driven and a lot of that character development could possibly have been placed in the first iteration of the movie series so I can’t exactly fault it. The pacing seems a little odd for a film but, once again, when it is set out to be a series of films all leading fro one to another I can’t fault it too hard because audiences will go into this movie knowing exactly what to expect. Possibly my favourite aspect of this story was that it centred around a war that WASN’T taking place in the Edo Period of Japan. It was extremely European and so full of action and consequence that I couldn’t help but enjoy it. It’s supernatural undertones, which only popped up briefly, were a nice touch because I feel like they will be brought to the forefront sometime in the series.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-04

Visuals

The animation was absolutely fantastic yet it’s use of CGI I found to be overused and fairly unnecessary. All of the battle scenes and all of the background character were CGI animated which makes sense for a lot of movies or series’ out there but I loved the traditional animation so much in this movie that I almost yearned for it during the times where it wasn’t present. I just found that the traditional animation was so smooth and fluid that it really could have been done for the entire movie. I understand that it is incredibly hard to animate large numbers of people in combat yet we’ve seen series’ like Sengoku Basara do this extremely well and it continuously lead me to thinking that this movie would have been so much better had every scene been done traditionally and not just the idol scenes. It just took some of the appeal away from me. The environments were spectacular and incredible realistic, you really good a good feeling of how dense a forest is or how open et claustrophobic a baron battlefield filled with armies can be. Characters looked fantastic and, although I know nothing of the time it was based around, I feel like costumes were fairly accurate to the era.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-05

Audio

First of all; the English voice acting was great, there were no annoying voices, there were no anti-climactic speeches or dialogue and when a character screamed or felt pain you really felt it yourself. They did an incredible thing during a fight scene where the character’s inner dialogue could be heard as crisp as it could always be yet the character’s surroundings were dulled and muffled because that character was close to death, a revelation was made and it cut straight from damp sounds the clear cutting and smashing of bodies and heads on the battlefield. It was an incredible quick transition and it really made an impact on me, it was just the sound yet it felt like time itself slowed right down. The orchestral and medieval music throughout the movie fit it so well and just added to the overall “dated” experience of the story as well as the character’s situation. There was even a small chunk of distorted guitar thrown in during a “fever dream” style of scene close to the end. Very well done.

Berserk-The-Golden-Age-Arc-2-06

Overall

This movie is done great and I would really recommend it to any mature members of the Anime-watching audience. I’m certain that fans of the original series would absolutely love this release and, while there are no extras, it’s still a purchase for any fan of the series. It has actually made me interested in catching up and watching the first movie and it’s also made me begin anticipating the release of the third movie so if it’s done this to me I can imagine what it would do to a lot of other, more open-minded, fans of Anime out there. This movie can be watched on it’s own but I can imagine that the whole experience will be better suited to someone who has seen it from the very beginning. Once again, it is a  fantastic release despite it lacking certain things that would have made it a perfect release in my eyes.
