Valve Teams Up With Oculus VR

Oculus-Rift-Game-Prices-02

Valve has announced that they will no longer be developing and releasing their own VR (virtual reality) gear, despite expectations to the contrary. Instead, the company has opted to work with Oculus VR to eventually get virtual reality gaming onto Steam.

It is already known that Valve has previously made prototypes of their own, but earlier this week they made an announcement that an experimental new model of Steam was compatible with the Oculus Rift. With Oculus being at the forefront of this amazing new technology, perhaps Valve is better off leaving the hardware side of things to Oculus.

Valve has expressed that they believe PC will master VR as the PC is more adaptable and powerful than any console. The company has also indicated that we may see virtual reality in the living room in as little as two years.

ANNO ONLINE ADDS “MONUMENTS”

Players Can Now Unlock and Build Monumental Structures that Provide Extraordinary Bonuses

SAN FRANCISCO – January 21st, 2014 – Ubisoft® and Blue Byte® have introduced Monuments, a major new feature for the popular free-to-play browser-based strategy game, Anno® Online. Starting today, players will be able to build monumental constructions that provide extraordinary bonuses in the game.

ANNO Online is a free-to-play, browser-based world-building strategy game that challenges players to build and manage a medieval kingdom and trading empire.   ANNO Online is available to anyone that signs up or logs in with their existing Uplay account via the game’s official web site www.anno-online.com.

The Monuments

By completing a quest chain, players will gain knowledge points and unlock new Monuments buildings, with the “Library” acting as the first available option. A Monument can have up to three construction phases and players must deliver goods to the construction site and search throughout the game for special construction components.

After building the Library, players will discover the Tech Tree, which consists of several branches that can be unlocked for additional Knowledge Points.  These points will provide players the ability to build six different types of Botanical Garden, each one giving the player a specific buff or bonus.

Multiplayer Feature

Players can visit other players and help them with their monument construction by sending Constructors to the construction site for a specific period of time. A player can also request help from other players to improve the construction process of their buildings.

ABOUT ANNO ONLINE
Based on the critically acclaimed ANNO 1404®, ANNO Online delivers the franchise’s proven and popular strategy-simulation gameplay along with the series’ highly-detailed animation and graphics, for the first time in a browser-based title. Players will build and develop great medieval cities using the detailed economic system enjoyed for years by ANNO fans. As they satisfy the population’s needs, they will unlock new buildings and face more demanding inhabitants, eventually needing to discover and claim additional islands and connect them with trading routes.

In ANNO Online, players start on a deserted island with only two buildings (a harbour and a warehouse) and make the best of their resources to build, manage and expand their territory in order to develop a commercial empire. Trade by ships remains an essential component of the game, and will offer multiplayer possibilities that will further enhance the deep economic system of ANNO Online.

TEAM NINJA EXPLORES THE BLOODY BEGINNINGS OF YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z IN FIRST EPISODE OF DEVELOPER DIARY SERIES

TEAM NINJA EXPLORES THE BLOODY BEGINNINGS OF YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z IN FIRST EPISODE OF DEVELOPER DIARY SERIES

Today Team NINJA kicks off the four part YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z developer diary series detailing the conception, tools and madding plight of the twisted cyber ninja known only as “Yaiba”.  In the premiere episode “Bloody Beginnings”, Team NINJA, Comcept and Spark Unlimited all share their thoughts on the collaboration between the three development teams and how the creative fusion of each team’s strengths has melded both Japanese and Western game styles to create something truly unique. Commentary includes perspectives from Executive Producer, Yosuke Hayashi and Producer, Kohei Shibata (Team NINJA), Conceptor, Keiji Inafune and Producer Shinsaku Ohara (comcept), Lead Game Designer, Cory Davis and Lead Gameplay Engineer, George Mawle (Spark).

In YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z, players will battle fierce zombies as Yaiba, a cyborg ninja who will do anything to get revenge and stay alive. Cleaved in two, he is brought back to life with cyber-technology. Brandishing his ninja sword and the mecha weapons in his cyber arm, he slaughters zombies with brutal, over-the-top abandon. Step into a stylized living comic book where stunning graphics depict a world gone mad. Hordes of undead can only be stopped by Yaiba’s willingness to use any means necessary to get the job done. Will he kill by turning his cyber arm into a razor chainsaw for slicing up undead—or just rip off an opponent’s arms to use as zombie nunchucks? Both possibilities fill Yaiba’s heart with twisted laughter in this upcoming collaboration between famed developers Team NINJA and comcept’s Keiji Inafune.

YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Steam® (PC) March 4, 2014. This title has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Lost Yeti Review

Lost-Yeti-Logo

Lost Yeti
Developer: Neutronized
Publisher: Neutronized
Platforms: iPhone (Reviewed), iPad, iPod Touch
Release Date: 15th January 2014
Price: AUS/US$0.99, £0.99 – Available Here

Overview

Here in Europe, winter has come in full force and it would seem that Italian based indie developer, Neutronized Games, have caught the winter chill. Plunging you right into the heart of a snow covered, mountainous landscape, this charming 16-bit style puzzler will rack your brain and leave you more than a little hungry for an ice lolly.

Lost-Yeti-Screenshot-01

Story

While on a lovely stroll through the mountains with his tribe, a young yeti (let’s call him Bert) spotted something wonderful sitting just off of the path. Bert’s eyes lit up at the sight of a delicious ice lolly. Unable to resist the pixelated goodness, Bert ran off to claim his prize. Though, to his despair, the rest of his group left him behind and now he finds himself lost with only you to guide him back to his family.

Lost-Yeti-Screenshot-05

Gameplay

Lost Yeti takes a very standard, classic approach to puzzle solving that relies heavily on timing, and a methodical thought process. The only tools that you control are rows of ice blocks that you can move horizontally or vertically to manipulate the movement of Bert the Yeti as he trundles along relentlessly, only turning when he hits a wall.

Lost-Yeti-Screenshot-02

At first the game seems very easy, but as you progress you begin to encounter enemies and hazards that make it extremely difficult to progress, especially if you are a completionist who needs to collect every single lollipop and take the shortest possible route on every stage. I wasn’t even out of the first area before I rage quit the game for the first time when I was repeatedly flattened by a boar that followed Bert around the level and ate every lollipop in sight. In a market of iOS games that are too easy to justify their price tag, this game will keep the avid puzzler coming back for more, but I think the average mobile gamer will find Lost Yeti more frustrating than puzzling. The primary reason for that is that you lack direct control over Bert himself so instead of blaming yourself, you just end up screaming at Bert for being such a stupid, 1-direction walking, furry, white lump. Not that I am bitter or anything…

Lost-Yeti-Screenshot-03

Visuals

The level and character designs in Lost Yeti are easily its strongest feature, taking heavily from a lot of the browser-based flash games, such as Snow Tale, that Neutronized have developed in the past. Every single pixel is bright and vibrant and for such basic sprites, the amount of character that you get from Bert and the many enemies that he confronts is really quite impressive. Bert is easily one of the cutest characters I have played with in any game and I would almost recommend buying the game just to see his adorable smile when you complete a level!

Audio

Dear god, the audio. You will enjoy the audio for all of 5 minutes and then you will either be driven insane, or have a hefty repair bill for the hole in the dry wall you just created by launching your iPhone as far away from your ears as possible. Repetitive is not the word. What little audio there is fits well with the style of the game, but it seriously needs a patch to mix it up a little more.

Lost-Yeti-Screenshot-04

Overall

This tricky puzzler is not the sort of game that I would come back to, but if you’re looking for a challenging app that easily has enough gameplay to justify its $0.99/£0.99 price tag then you could do a lot worse. It has a great art style, challenging puzzles, and most importantly it is fun, if not extremely rage inducing.
