JANE JENSEN’S MOEBIUS: EMPIRE RISING™ WILL RELEASE APRIL 15 FOR PC & MAC

JANE JENSEN’S MOEBIUS: EMPIRE RISING™ WILL RELEASE APRIL 15 FOR PC & MAC

Kickstarted Adventure Game from Gabriel Knight® Creator Coming From New Video Game Publisher Phoenix Online Publishing™

LANCASTER, PA (February 20, 2014) – Jane Jensen has entered into an agreement with Phoenix Online Publishing, the new independent publishing division of Phoenix Online Studios, to release her upcoming adventure game Moebius: Empire Rising™ for PC and Mac on April 15, 2014. Moebius: Empire Rising is the veteran designer’s first adventure game since 2010’s Gray Matter, and the first she has completely overseen since Gabriel Knight® 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned in 1999. This publishing deal marks the culmination of a successful collaboration between Jensen — the game’s writer, designer, and creative director — and Phoenix Online, who developed the game under her supervision.

In Moebius: Empire Rising, players will step into the shoes of Malachi Rector, a high-end antiquities dealer with a photographic memory, a genius for history, and an uncanny talent for discerning genuine artifacts from cheap knock-offs. At the request of a secretive government agency, Malachi flies to Venice to determine whether a recently-murdered woman resembles any particular figure in history. Why would the U.S. government offer him $50,000 to perform this odd job? Why does a stranger he meets randomly in the desert seem like someone he’s known all his life? And how come every time Malachi lets down his guard, someone tries to kill him?

In the layered mystery of Moebius: Empire Rising, players will travel the globe with Malachi and his bodyguard, former special forces operative David Walker, to analyze suspects, make historical connections, and piece together clues to uncover a conspiracy the U.S. government and other covert agencies will defend at any cost. A modern adventure game styled in the vein of recent Sherlock Holmes and James Bond thrillers, it merges classic point-and-click puzzle solving with Malachi’s unique deductive powers and the sophisticated storytelling Jensen’s games are known for.

“After two years in development, I’m excited to bring Moebius: Empire Rising to market,” said Jane Jensen, head of game developer Pinkerton Road. “I’ve worked closely with Phoenix throughout development, and I know they love this game as much as I do. I’m pleased to have them handling the publishing end so I can focus on writing and designing more games.”

Since raising funding for Moebius: Empire Rising through a 2012 Kickstarter campaign, Jensen has kept backers informed of the game’s progress with monthly updates, playable beta builds, and an open house at her home studio on Pinkerton Road farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In return, her biggest fans have had an unparalleled opportunity to see and participate in the adventure’s development, with much of their feedback directly influencing the final game.

“Working with Jane, one of gaming’s most accomplished storytellers, has been an incredible experience from the perspective of both a fan and partner,” said Cesar Bittar, CEO of Phoenix Online Studios. “We’re thrilled to help bring her new series of paranormal thrillers to life – and even more thrilled to bring to one of 2014’s most-anticipated titles straight to gamers worldwide.”

Following its April 15 debut on PC and Mac, Moebius: Empire Rising will release for Linux and iPad and Android tablets later in 2014. Learn more about Moebius at http://www.moebiusthegame.com.

The Cat Lady Review

The Cat Lady
Developer: Harvester Games
Publisher: Screen 7
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: December 1st, 2012
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview:

The Cat Lady is a horror adventure game developed by Harvester Games and published by Screen 7. The unique horror title focuses on the death of Susan Ashworth, and the journey she’s forced to take prior to her eternal rest. The title is found on Steam, and was an indie title that was pushed through the Steam Greenlight Program. At a first glance, most people might be put off by the appearance of the game, the name that the developers have chosen for the title, and the fact that it’s a horror game. I’m a firm believer in the fact that the monsters and creeps that exist in horror games will fly out of my screen and live in my home. But The Cat Lady is a different specimen of the Horror genre. It doesn’t scare players with cheap spook tactics, though it does employ those every once in a while. The game provides a very empathetic story, one that will undoubtedly touch a few of the players in a special way. This combination with unique graphics and a simplistic gameplay model creates an atmosphere that will leave you contemplating your life and all the frailties we live with.

Story:

Susan Ashworth is a middle-aged woman with a dull life, a small apartment, and a lack of reason to live. Besides her cats, who are all strays, Susan’s life is meaningless. She has no friends, no family, nothing to live for. Choosing to end her life instead, she swallows a bottle of pills that was given to her from the doctors. Knowing the end was imminent, she writes a letter, detailing everything she feels, and why her life is so unfair. She soon feels a bit drowsy, and falls into an unending slumber.

Odd thing is, Susan Ashworth wakes up. She awakens in a field, one that seems beautiful at a glance, but holds something much more wicked. This surreal canvas that Susan Ashworth strolls upon belongs to the Queen of Maggots, a woman who holds the power in the realm. She informs Susan that her journey is not over, and that she cannot die in peace just yet. She now has to kill 5 Parasites, different psychopaths in the living realm that has been deemed a nuisance in the Queen of Maggot’s eyes. Her journey will reveal something about her, something that she hasn’t known in a long time.

The-Cat-Lady-Screenshot-02

Gameplay:

Gameplay, as mentioned before, is very simplistic. You use your left and right keyboard keys to control movement, and your up key is to enter or interact with items or scenes and your down key is to access your inventory. The Space bar is there to speed up any of the dialogue you encounter. What most people will not expect from this game is that it is very dialogue heavy, meaning that if you don’t enjoy reading what you’re doing, you’re better off looking somewhere else.

At the start of the game, you’re introduced to Susan Ashworth and her life. At the time of her passing, she only has her cats. Depressed and lonely, her choice to kill herself led to some difficult complications. An old lady in an alternate universe named Queen of Maggots tells you, Susan, to kill 5 psychopaths in the realm of the living, which she aptly names “Parasites”. Your goal is to take each of these Parasites out, any way possible.

The-Cat-Lady-Screenshot-03

You’ll find that Susan isn’t as frail as she seems. Her outwardly appearance may seem weak and sickly, but she has a hidden strength that she utilizes to fulfill her purpose. During your quest, players will be accompanied by Mitzi, who becomes Susan’s friend. She’ll help guide you along and fulfill all the tasks that you need in order to succeed. The puzzles presented in the game are well though out. Every item you need to continue on can be found in other parts of the level, and utilizing them is easy. It takes a while to see any change in Susan, but the transition is there. In the beginning, Susan’s personality is quite depressing and inhibited, but as she catches her stride, she slowly gains confidence in herself and becomes more strong-willed.

The Cat Lady can’t be described as a particularly challenging title, but I never once thought that this game was easy. The game requires thinking, and in the process, you’ll be scared out of your wits when it comes to particular scenes. The entire atmosphere the game provides keeps the player on their toes, and one of the things I really liked about it was how the camera angles would change as you moved from one scene to the next. Something as simple as that really created a fear factor for me that was unlike any I’ve ever tried. One moment I’m looking at a huge panoramic shot of Susan walking, and suddenly, I’m close and intimate to her. It’s times like that where I have no idea what might be lurking behind the shadows.

The-Cat-Lady-Screenshot-04

Visuals & Audio:

The game is visually appealing, but is nothing spectacularly impressive. It is unique in its own right, similar to magazine cut outs pasted in a huge canvas. It fits perfectly for the game, however. The game is predicated on a surreal atmosphere, one that can’t be replicated with 3D imaging. The backdrop is layered and very harsh, set by the color choice that depicts death and sickness. The mix of colors in the beginning scenes are a mix of gold hues and brownish tints, but as the story progresses into the darker scenes of her journey, black and white become the dominant colors, with splashes of red coming out. This mix really sets the tempo for the game and kicks the game off with the fear factor already set in.

The voice acting in the game was a bit of a hit and miss. In most cases, the voice acting was superb, especially the voice for Susan Ashworth. In the beginning, her voice was a little shrill and high pitched, since she was afraid and tired of life, but as she moves past that and becomes more aware of life, her voice changes, slowly but surely. She gains that sense of confidence and her voice reflects that. In other cases, the voice acting seemed very off. The sound was completely different and it seemed like it was recorded over the phone or some other chat program. The music was superb though. The music really set the atmosphere in scenes where tension was key. I felt my heartbeat rising as I walked into certain scenes, just because of the music.

The-Cat-Lady-Screenshot-05

Overall:

All in all, the game was amazing. Besides a few minor setbacks, I can’t find any reason why anyone shouldn’t try The Cat Lady. Even for someone like me, who hates horror games, this title surprised me. Besides being a horror title, the game touches on a myriad of themes that are relevant to anyone who tries the game. That’s what is so unique about this game to me. It touches people on so many levels that you really become aware of what Susan Ashworth is feeling and why she feels like this. If you were on the fence about this game, please stop and consider getting it, because it’s worth the price.

Weapon Shop de Omasse Review

Weapon Shop de Omasse
Developer: Level-5
Publisher: Level-5
Platforms: 3DS (Reviewed)
Release Date: February 20, 2014
Price: $7.99Available Here

Overview
Level-5, along with the help of a few other studios, have been rolling out occasional installments to their Guild series. Originally released as a compilation for the 3DS, Guild01 included four distinctly different titles with by various designers including Goichi “Suda 51” Suda and, in the case of Weapon Shop de Omasse, Japanese comedia Yoshiyuki Hirai. How does the comedian’s fantasy rhythm game stand though? Is it a legendary weapon or hot slag?

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-06

Story
You are Yuhan. You work as an apprentice in your father’s weapon shop inside a role playing game. Adventurers from all over come to your shop looking for weapons to aid them on their quests, from low-level newbies wanting to gain a couple levels to highly skilled warriors seeking to stop the Evil Lord’s return. With a little guidance from your father and a little rhythm, you’ll have to forge and upgrade weapons, matching your wares to the needs of the adventuring patrons that stop by your shop.

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-01

Gameplay
Weapon Shop de Omasse is the sort of game you can quickly pick up and enjoy with minimal introduction. It’s mechanics are fun and interesting, but your clients will make or break your business.

Weapon Shop de Omasse‘s setting is one that few games explore. Set within the world of an RPG, you’re the blacksmith who sells adventurers their gear. The quality of your work, as well as your eye for delivering the right product to the customer that needs it will define you. It’s not a completely new concept, but it’s ground that’s rarely trodden, establishing a fun setting and story.

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-02

With each new client you get into the shop, you’ll discuss their planned quest, getting details on the sort of weapons they prefer and what they’re looking to do with them. These can range from your nameless level 1 newbie looking to grind out a few experience points, to a Frenchman trying to become his favorite television heroes, to the perceived hero who may one day stop the coming of the Evil Lord. There are some fun, memorable characters you’ll encounter through the course of the game that help deliver a lasting sense of personality.

Once you’ve finished talking with the customers and getting their orders, the real work (and meat of the game) begins. You have a variety of weapon types and models at your disposal to build. You’ll need to either make a new weapon by request for the adventurer’s order or rent out a weapon already in your inventory that meets their needs.

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-05

Making new weapons is both fun and rewarding. You’re shown an outline of the weapon you need to create, then a hot slab of metal is placed on your workbench. Music starts to play, and beats are dropped – first, to show you what to match, and second for you to actually hammer. Using your stylus, you’ll tap away at the metal, working it into the form you need. You can shift it around or flip it over, but hammering away at the same spot over and over will yield no results. You also have to remember to keep the metal at the right temperature! Too hot or too cool and you’ll fail to properly shape the metal into a usable weapon. The better you perform in time with the music, the better the final weapon will be. It can feel a little overwhelming at times, especially when the beats get more chaotic, but it’s fun to tap along to the beat and seeing the final result is satisfying.

Beyond simply making weapons, there are a few other things you’ll need to keep in mind. As a rental shop, you want adventurers to return your gear (and a rental fee) to you. If the weapons you give them break or fail to meet their needs, the rental is free of charge and you’ll have lost the weapon. When adventurers successfully return your goods, you can polish them. This gives them a nice shimmer while improving their stats, leveling it up for the adventurers needing stronger weaponry.

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-03

As the game progresses, adventurers will also bring you materials to use in your crafting. These can give the weapons special properties. If you run out, you can order more for a fee, and thus the cycle continues as the adventurers get stronger.

One of the most entertaining aspects of the entire game comes in the form of a Twitter-like mechanism you build into each weapon. Known as the “Grindcast,” each arm you send out the door relays short updates on the status of the quests adventurers are on. These provide an array of humorous updates throughout the course of every quest your weapons are part of, giving you some deeper insight into the adventurers and providing a fun way to monitor the world outside your shop.

weapon-shop-de-omasse-screenshot-04

Visuals & Audio
Weapon Shop de Omasse‘s visuals are nothing particularly spectacular. Character models are relatively simple with a low polygon count. The skins on those models, however, are bright and colorful, evoking a sense of anime in the art direction. Everything else feels appropriate to the setting. Weapon models look great as well.

The music in Weapon Shop de Omasse is excellent. On top of tapping the stylus along with the beat to make weapons, you’ll find yourself tapping your foot even when there’s no smithing to be done. Beyond that, the laugh track can feel a little overused, but it helps give the game the feeling of a sitcom.

Overall
Overall, Weapon Shop de Omasse is a fun, interesting rhythm game with some neat shop management mechanics built in. The characters are boisterous and memorable, and seeing their adventures through the “Grindcast” system is a hoot. If you enjoy classic JRPGs and rhythm games, Weapon Shop de Omasse is a humorous, toe-tapping fantasy adventure you’ll enjoy hammering out some time with.

YAIBA BATTLES MASSIVE TWO-HEADED ZOMBIE TODDLERS IN ALL NEW IMAGES FOR YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z

YAIBA BATTLES MASSIVE TWO-HEADED ZOMBIE TODDLERS IN ALL NEW IMAGES FOR YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z

Team NINJA today released new screenshots depicting a fresh look into Yaiba Kamikaze’s chaotic plight showing off new bosses, harvested weapons, and an all-new environment featured in the upcoming YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z. Deep within an enormous armored fortress travelling across a snowy wasteland, Yaiba is surrounded by a pack of massive two-headed zombie toddlers known as the Terrible Two. Armed with his mech harvested rocket launcher, one shot will take them out before they even have a chance to try and devour him. Yaiba then continues the bloodbath and harvests the zombie tot’s mammoth Shoulder Blade into a club to take out the rest of the horde. Batter up, zombie fodder!

In YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z, players will battle fierce zombies as Yaiba, a cyborg ninja who will do anything to get revenge and stay alive. Cleaved in two, he is brought back to life with cyber-technology. Brandishing his ninja sword and the mecha weapons in his cyber arm, he slaughters zombies with brutal, over-the-top abandon. Step into a stylized living comic book where stunning graphics depict a world gone mad. Hordes of undead can only be stopped by Yaiba’s willingness to use any means necessary to get the job done. Will he kill by turning his cyber arm into a razor chainsaw for slicing up undead—or just rip off an opponent’s arms to use as zombie nunchucks? Both possibilities fill Yaiba’s heart with twisted laughter in this upcoming collaboration between famed developers Team NINJA and comcept’s Keiji Inafune.

YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft on March 18, 2014 and Steam® (PC) on March 21, 2014. This title been rated M (Mature) by the ESRB.
