INXS: Never Tear Us Apart Review

INXS: Never Tear Us Apart
Studio: Shine Australia
Publisher: Beyond Entertainment
Format:
DVD, Blu-Ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: February 26th, 2014
Price: $29.95 – Available Here

Overview
Listen Like Thieves, Suicide Blonde, Original Sin, Need You Tonight, Burn For You. These are all hit songs from the iconic Australian rock band INXS. We all know these songs quite well and have likely heard them countless times over throughout our lives. What we didn’t know was the story behind these songs, the drama that played out behind the scenes with Australia’s rowdy rockers INXS. That is of course until now.

With INXS: Never Tear Us Apart we get a look into the band’s rise to fame and the steep drop into a very dark place which culminated in the tragic death of lead singer and songwriter Michael Hutchence. This is about as raw a retelling as you could possibly get. Whether you’re an INXS fan or just intrigued by the drama that surrounded the band, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart proves to near let you look away with its captivating recount of the life and times of these legendary musicians.

inxs-never-tear-us-apart-screenshot-04

Story
As far as musicians go, INXS was through and through a band of aussie blokes fronted by an eccentric and in INXS: Never Tear Us Apart we come to see that at great length. While the focus is primarily on Michael Hutchence, the eccentric in that equation, the real heart of this series is Andrew Farris, a common man if there ever was one, but a great ear for music.

Farris and Hutchence serve as the two major pillars by which all the action revolves around. Having written the vast majority of their greatest hits, the duo wind up being at the centre of the greatest highs and deepest lows for the band. Farris was always the responsible one and really kept the band together through thick and thin, Hutchence however quickly evolved into the chemical that poisoned the well. As his fame grew, Hutchence became an addict of many kinds, be it drugs, alcohol or sex, he was on them all. Hutchence found himself constantly entangled in drama both behind the scenes and on our TV screens. He was all over the news for his countless scandals and the self-destruction of Michael Hutchence was only serving to spur on the implosion of INXS.

inxs-never-tear-us-apart-screenshot-01

The exploration of these people and the music they made is the real hook here. The way that their dreams took them to places they always wished to be while simultaneously destroying all that they cared about is heartbreaking to say the very least. Appropriately, Hutchence isn’t treated as a hero in any sense, rather he is conveyed as a tragic figure corrupted by fame and the world that loved him. The most talked about scene is undoubtedly his final moments and it is gut-wrenching viewing in every way. The series rightfully depicts Hutchence’s death with a careful touch, never treading too deep into the controversial circumstances of his passing. Rather it explores the effect that this man’s life had on these people and the impact his death made on not only INXS, but also the world.

Ultimately, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart is a highly engaging journey through the career of INXS and the tragic fate that awaited frontman Michael Hutchence. Hutchence drama aside, it makes for a great look at the history of the band and the inner workings that went into making them the band we know today.

inxs-never-tear-us-apart-screenshot-03

Visuals and Audio
In terms of visuals, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart manages to capture the aesthetic of its era to great effect, bringing the colourful 80s to life. An interesting decision from Shine Australia comes in the form of real life footage interspersed with the newly filmed footage with the actors. We get to see the real-life Hutchence performing and it only feels right that it would be so. All in all the aesthetics are solid enough and the cinematography does a good job at conveying the feeling of touring with a band all the while exploring the darkness that comes with that.

As for the soundtrack, what more needs to be said other than it features a bunch of awesome INXS songs? All of their greatest hits are represented here and some are explored in great detail. The music really feels like a character in and of itself at times. The music of INXS had such soul and that very soul is on show here honest and true.

Extras
In terms of special features, this release is somewhat lacking in any extra content. The quality of the mini-series itself however is superb to say the very least and at this price point it is more than worth the purchase regardless of its lack of special features. That in and of itself speaks leaps and bounds about the quality of the series and it proves to be a memorable Australia drama for it.

inxs-never-tear-us-apart-screenshot-02

Overall
We all have wings, but some of us don’t know why. The same can be said for INXS, a band that despite all odds succeeded and became a global success with countless hits all around the world. They were a band that flew higher than just about any other band of their time, they all had wings, but some of them just didn’t know why. Such was the case for the tragic Michael Hutchence, a man troubled all his life, be it in love or music, he flew so high only to fall so hard. It is a tragic tale that plays out in gritty detail in INXS: Never Tear Us Apart.

This is the truest telling of the INXS story you’re bound to find. With the members of the band themselves advising on the project, what we have is an honest journey from garage band to international sensation. INXS: Never Tear Us Apart is one of the finest pieces of Australian television in quite some time. It is astonishing, remarkable television that chronicles one of our country’s most beloved musical acts. This is a must-see TV drama, a tale of a group of friends who could never be torn apart, no matter how hard they got kicked.

Tower Of Guns Review

Tower Of Guns
Developer: Terrible Posture Games
Publisher: Terrible Posture Games
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: March 4th, 2014
Price: $14.99 – Available Here

Overview

The title Tower Of Guns is a unique piece of work where flying chainsaws, explosive bullets, and Hugbots are the norm. A twitch FPS-style game that utilizes quick reaction times, double jumping, and precise aiming to progress through levels. The game is advertised as a “lunchbreak FPS”, meaning that you can play the game at any time you want in short windows, while still allowing you to develop some progression in the form of levels and weapons. In all honesty, the rounds aren’t that short, but they are short enough for you to play during a quick break. If you wanted to unlock everything in the level and explore every nook and cranny, the rounds might take a bit longer but if you’re just in it to blow things up, you’ll be able to play a good two to three rounds during a lunch break. The game is nothing like Call Of Duty: Ghosts or any of the other new FPS titles recently created, so if you’re checking this game out, be prepared for a completely different experience.

Tower-Of-Guns-Screenshot-03

Gameplay

The FPS nature of this game is based on a fast-paced, twitch aiming style of gameplay. The shoot-em-up feel of the game really gets the adrenaline going when you’re in the middle of a metallic chamber filled with rocket launchers, turrets, and exploding robots. There is a variety of weapons for you to choose from when you begin the game, and each of these weapons have the capabilities to upgrade. For example, there’s a weapon called the “Peas-And-Carrot Shooter” that shoots little pink bullets at the beginning. However, as you progress and pick up these little blue power-ups, your gun will upgrade itself, providing you with better damage, new effects, or some other benefit that will prove very useful. For the case of the “Peas-And-Carrot Shooter”, the gun begins to fire a larger shot, with multiple rounds in one shot. After a little bit of leveling up your guns, you can one-shot certain turrets and mobs, making the levels a lot easier, until you hit the higher tiered levels.

Tower-Of-Guns-Screenshot-02

One of the main things that I had to remember when playing this game was that movement was one of the most important tools in this game. Jumping, or bunny-hopping, is a really important aspect of the game because of how much it affects your survivability. The game capitalizes on your movement as  you try to avoid all the incoming bullets and robots flying at your face. The gameplay is incredibly fast-paced. The amount of enemy AI that tries to attack you slowly increases as you progress through the level. The beginning starts off with a few turrets and robots here and there, but as you get to the later levels, you easily have a dozen or so baddies trying to gut you per room.

An interesting part of this game is the “Secrets” of each level. As you make your way through the stage, there are secrets that can be uncovered as you crawl through the steampunk-esque floors. Sometimes the walls might be fake, and you’ll be able to walk through it. Others are hidden around a corner out of view. This system adds a new level of depth to every round you play.

Tower-Of-Guns-Screenshot-05

Every round is also different. The levels are constantly different as you start new rounds. While the layout of the room might remain similar, the types of enemy you’ll face and where they’re located is always in new positions. As I played the round, I got used to the basic layout of what’s going on, but it still fazed me when a new robot popped up instead of a previously encountered one.

One thing that newcomers might have difficulty adjusting to is the gameplay and how to accommodate the playstyle. Not everyone is familiar with the bunny-hopping, circle-strafing FPS fun that certain gamers all know. It takes a while to understand the mechanics that the developers wanted us to utilize in order to beat the game. The game also has a pretty steep learning curve, and completing the levels takes more than a little luck to completely finish without getting close to the brink of death.

Tower-Of-Guns-Screenshot-01

Visuals & Audio

The visuals in this game are surprisingly refreshing. The tone and atmosphere that’s set by the game completely matches the overall theme of the game. The environment that the game takes place in is a little bit dirty, loud, and dark. Also, the graphics of the bullets and the weapons all fit the bill. When you’re running around with your gun, which varies between a small little pea shooter to a huge bazooka-like firearm, it’s hard not to notice the detail of the levels and enemies.

The music is really good in terms of matching the mood of the game. The ambience of the music really helps create this atmosphere where a certain level of intensity needs to be upheld. I felt that the visuals and the audio in the game really meshed well to create a wholesome experience for the FPS lover or the casual shooter fan.

Tower-Of-Guns-Screenshot-04

Overall

Overall, there’s nothing more you could ask for from a FPS title that prides itself on being a “lunchbreak” style game. It’s not meant to be played at long spurts. It’s a game where you can turn on when you have a small break, and still enjoy everything it has to offer to the fullest. Tower Of Guns is surprisingly addictive and extremely rewarding when you really get into it. I’m still playing it now and I’m still not close to finishing a quarter of what’s possible. If you’re looking for a FPS title that you can get into without taking too much time out of your day, make sure you check out Tower Of Guns.
