The Naruto Panel With Maile Flanagan, Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt At Supanova 2014

Naruto-Panel-Supanova-2014-Image-03

Three stars, one stage and a whole lot of ninja shenanigans this year at the “Naruto” panel which took place at Supanova 2014. It was the second anime panel of the day and it just so happened to feature three brilliant voice actors all of which have roles on the highly popular show “Naruto” as well as it’s continuation “Naruto Shippuuden“.

The three panel guest had an obvious dynamic that only years of working close together can build and it made for one electric panel with the audience picking up exactly what the stars where laying down. There was a nice vibe floating through the audience as the Flanagan, Lowenthal and Platt spoke of the differences between the dubbing of American-made cartoons and that of their Japanese counterparts.

Yuri Lowenthal, having done a great deal of the “Ben 10” series as Ben himself, detailed the differences between the two voice acting processes explaining that recording lines for for American series’ is done as a group unlike Japanese series’ which are all done in singular booths. Despite each of them mostly recording alone, they still found time to meet each other and became great friends over the years, more so for Mr. Lowenthal and Mrs. Platt who met while on the job and eventually were joint in holy matrimony.

Audience Question: “What have been your most difficult voice roles?” Maile Answers: “Definitely baby Naruto, it’s not a voice I’ve had to do a lot of so it tends to be quite difficult” Tara Answers: “Anything out vocal range like screaming for video game takes”.

Yuri, after being posed the above question, then began to explain that he only ever takes roles that he knows he can perfect which eliminates the problem a majority of voice actors seem to face on occasion. The trio then began talking about the evolution of voice acting: Tara explains that anime introduced a new level of voice acting that hadn’t been seen before.

“Voices used to be extremely ‘cartoony‘ but now, thanks to anime, we’re able to do our job in a more natural way” she explained. Maile shared her views on celebrities taking voice acting roles above professional voice actors saying that she believes everyone deserves to do the work but that Hollywood stars shouldn’t be cast in these roles simply because they’re celebrity personalities, they should be cast because they can do the job properly.

Maile backed up her point by telling the audience that she has filled in for celebrities in their voice acting roles because they couldn’t continue to do the job. She also humorously mentioned that she had a role in “The Simpsons Movie” that she recorded lines for but was ultimately cut from.

Maile continued telling stories relating to voice acting long into the panel. The audience was delighted to hear of the time she met a young “Naruto” fan on Halloween but was ultimately overwhelmed when the young fan invited a mob of his friends to come and see the voice of his favorite Ninja in her very own home.

The guests than went on a tangent after being asked, once again, about their voice roles explaining that the change from “Naruto” to “Naruto: Shippuuden” wasn’t a hard one voice-wise but it did take a change in mentality to properly portray the older characters. Maile explained it as “harnessing a maturity that wasn’t there before”. The trio then went on to answer the audiences questions and eventually the panel come to a natural close. As mentioned, the three had a clear friendship that shined on stage. I cannot wait to see them once again sometime in the near future.

Michael and Lindsay Jones Panel at Supanova 2014

Supanova-2014-Rooster-Teeth-Panel-Photo-02
Meeting up with the Jones’

Representing Rooster Teeth and with an energetic and boisterous entrance, Michael and Lindsay Jones took to the stage at Supanova 2014. Once the cheers and applause from a packed audience finally subsided, the Jones’ even had time to answer a few questions and discuss the ins and outs of working at such an interesting company.

As you would expect from a panel hosting the newlyweds of the Rooster Teeth office, conversation immediately turned to, you guessed it, Gavin Free. Ever the Achievement Hunter darling, fans wondered what Michael and Lindsay would consider the dumbest thing Gavin has ever done. The consensus was that his inability to decipher a date in May during the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Let’s Play” was undoubtedly a major lapse in judgement. But I digress…

Back to the guests of honour, fans wondered what the most difficult part of working at Rooster Teeth is. Turns out it’s “keeping the energy up”. Michael explained that Let’s Plays, Go! and every other video produced by Achievement Hunter tend to be filmed rather close, hence it is sometimes a challenge to maintain the exuberance that keeps fans attention. In this vein he instigated a cheer for Red Bull, which the audience was only too happy to produce. After all, the energy drink is in part responsible for some of our and the Jones’ favourite Let’s Plays, such as  GTA IV: Cops and Crooks, Starwhal: Just the Tip and the Worms and Minigolf sagas. That’s not an assumption by the way, the Jones’ listed their favourites…along with some of their less than favourites. Namely anything Monopoly related, the two hour epic that was Fuel and the now legendary and still mysterious Magic the Gathering Let’s Play. Rage Quit also netted a mention, with Michael divulging his true rage for Winnie the Pooh and his pointlessly difficult baseball game.

Never a dull moment

Having broadened their horizons into the realm of voice acting, the Jones’ also received many a question about their work on the action packed RWBY and Red vs Blue. Lindsay explained the original difficulty she had getting into the voice of Ruby and how she has only become more comfortable in the role as the series progresses. Michael also weighed in on episodes to come, happy that he will get more lines in the upcoming season. Though if his description of the recording process is anything to go by, it could take more than a few takes. I guess that’s the trouble in working with a crew of jokesters. However, the panel also came with the revelation that there may be some more voice acting in the future, though unfortunately details were not provided.

On a more personal note, we were also privileged to hear the story of how this Achievement Hunting couple first met and began their relationship. Sure it might sound a little personal, but Michael and Lindsay were more than happy to accommodate the interested fans. Without going into too much of the details, after a random compliment regarding Zelda tattoos and an unexpected car ride home a relationship grew. Isn’t that sweet? With the pair happily working together, they mentioned an interest in providing fans with a few videos sometime in the future. Though “Marriage Pals” seems to be an unlikely title, as Lindsay jokingly described that title as an oxymoron.

All in all the panel was full of love, laughter and a sparing amount of Aussie accents. With the final question of the panel calling for one of Michael’s patented bursts of rage, we we’re treated to what was dubbed a “PG Quit”, owing to the convention’s rules on language. Though these conditions did illicit the annunciation of the term “fartbomb”, so it wasn’t all bad. With fans still clamouring for more when the panel ended, I think it’s safe to say that Michael and Lindsay Jones will always be welcomed guests in Australia. Oh, and keep an eye out for AHWU 225. Here’s praying our intro makes the cut.

Chuck Huber Panel At Supanova 2014

Chuck-Huber-Supanova-Panel-2014-Picture-01

This year’s Supanova Sydney convention (2014) was a star-studded event that pop culture fans nation-wide have been excited for all year.

Day one of the event begun just after midday to average crowds which was incredibly lucky for us here at Capsule Computers who were able to dodge crowds and make it front and center for the first panel of the day which just so happened to feature the man behind the voice of Android 17 from “Dragon Ball Z“, Shou Tucker from “Fullmetal Alchemist“, Hiei from “Yu Yu Hakusho” as well as so many others.

With an outstanding audience of exactly four people, it was easy for Mr. Huber to truly “cut loose” with line reads and express himself (and his voice roles) as beautifully flamboyant as possible. After personally introducing himself to each and every member of the audience, Mr. Huber went on to explain to us his role as a dialogue translator.

Chuck-Huber-Supanova-Panel-2014-Picture-03

Mr. Huber detailed his anime “re-wording” process as being “the most creative data entry I’ve ever done” with input from his six kids being a big part of it. He than began talking extensively about his work as Android 17 from “Dragon Ball Z”, mentioning that some of the hardest work he’s ever had to do was that of the high-octane series.

“You know you’re doing a good video game [voice acting] session when your throat starts to bleed” was a comment met with a roar of laughter. Us in the audience believed that working on “Dragon ball Z” would be hard but hearing it from one of the voice actors themselves just confirms what we all previously thought.

The panel’s MC lead Mr. Huber onto a “Star Trek-centric” tangent by asking him about working on the series alongside Vic Mignogna and his “posse”, as they were so elegantly called. Chuck made it known that the cast and crew – be it on set or in the booth – all love to play around with each other, making jokes and making each other laugh seemed to be one of the most important things for this industry legend.

Audience Question: “What is your weirdest fan experience?” Chuck’s Answer: “Do you guys want to touch my glass eye?” (in character as the fan)

Chuck was asked about his weirdest fan experience and he began to tell us the story of the time a young girl asked Vic Mignogna, Scott McNeal and himself if they each wanted to touch her glass eye to which the trio exclaimed “YES!” with elation.

“I was never going to pass up that chance!” he said. He than, due to another tangent-changing question, began talking about his theater career going over his various “Shakespearean” roles and ending the talk with a beautifully succinct “Shakespeare is the greatest form of practice for an actor”.

Definitely a quote that each and every aspiring actor (of any kind) should heed to. Chuck Huber was a delight to be able to see in person. Between his quirky personality and his ability to swiftly change in and out of character, the Chuck Huber panel at Supanova 2014 is one that I wont be forgetting anytime soon.

PC Gaming on the Go with the Steamboy

0

steamboy-01

The hottest digital game store on PC might soon be in the palm of your hand if all goes to plan. A small startup company is looking to bring Steam in to the portable environment with the idea of the SteamBoy. In an obvious nod to Nintendo’s GameBoy, the SteamBoy is touted to be able to play the majority of games available on the digital store. The developers behind the portable machine have said the console will run SteamOS and feature a Quad-Core CPU, 4GB RAM, 32GB built-in memory and a 5-inch 16:9 touchscreen in addition to Wi-Fi and Cellular Data connectivity for online features.

Steam is loved for it’s great sales on digital titles and large amount of content from AAA commercial games like Grand Theft Auto V to critically acclaimed Indie titles, mods and free to play games like Team Fortress 2. It is important to note that this device is in no way associated with Valve or their announced Steam Machine and will not be as powerful, mostly due to the limitations of being a portable device such as battery life. This console is being created by a small startup company, however at the time of writing we could not find a Kickstarter campaign or anything similar, so it is assumed the company is banking on the project being a success and is funding it themselves.  You can view the teaser for the devices prototype below. Like the Steam Machine, the SteamBoy is planned for a 2015 release.

Jon Heder at Supanova Sydney 2014

Jon-Heder-Seminar-Screenshot-2.0

With the recent ten year anniversary of Napoleon Dynamite, it seemed fitting to see Jon Heder make an appearance at Supanova Sydney this weekend from June 13-15.

During the seminar on Saturday, Jon Heder described the gist behind his first movie; “It’s about small town life – Idaho –a little bubble that doesn’t touch the outside word . . . a universal innocence that relates to all the losers.”

Jon-Heder-BoxArt

Jon Heder began his career in a highly defining role as Napoleon Dynamite, and continues to hold the world renowned status of the famously unique geek. What makes the iconic title so special, is the fact that Jon Heder did not expect the low-budget film to go beyond the walls of a student project, which was shot in just 22 days.

To everyone’s surprise, a fan from the audience took to stage the original dance performance from the film, with his own music and the classic ‘Vote for Pedro’ t-shirt. The most memorable part of the seminar, was hearing Jon talk about the imagined sequel for Napoleon Dynamite, with a fan suggesting the possibility of Napoleon joining the ‘Anchorman’ crew. Can you imagine all of the possibilities?

Supanova Sydney’s Zombie Transformation Tutorial with The Makeup Wardrobe

Zombie-Transformation-Tutorial-Screenshot-1.0

Today at the Supanova Sydney expo, I had the pleasure of meeting Emma-lee Court from The Makeup Wardrobe for the Zombie Transformation Tutorial. The talented makeup artist outlined the essential tools and method for making the perfect zombie, with the help of her bearded model.

Requirements:

  • Modelling putty/Mortician’s wax
  • Flexible wax sealer
  • Steel spatula
  • Cream-based makeup palette (avoid watercolours)
  • Makeup brushes (flat and round)
  • Artificial blood and venous blood (for spatter effect use spray bottle)
  • Crazy eye contact lenses (caution advised)

Zombie-Transformation-Tutorial-Screenshot-02

Steps:

  1. It is important to choose a hard and stable surface (e.g. forehead) for creating fresh wounds.
  2. Place putty on the chosen surface and form an oval-shape, spread the outer layers with spatula and apply flexible wax sealer.
  3. Mix blue, red and purple colours to paint around the wound, leaving some skin visible for a more realistic look.
  4. Add artificial and venous blood to the inner layers of the wound, be weary of the direction the blood will flow.
  5. Remember not to isolate the wound; make use of the entire canvas for more effective results.
  6. Mix green, yellow and brown to form a dirty avocado colour for the dead skin on the face.
  7. Using black and red colours, trace contours of the face with the makeup brush. Ask the model to hold an angry face to make the indents clearer and process easier.
  8. If you want to add veins, use blue and black colours to paint small squiggles on the face and cover with blood. Highlight the veins with white for a popping effect.

Don’t let the zombies scare you away from the final day of Supanova 2014 tomorrow at the Dome, Sydney Olympic Park!
