New Studio Sentient Play Announces K.O.M.R.A.D. Conversation Game for Apple Watch, iPhone, & iPad

New Studio Sentient Play Announces K.O.M.R.A.D. Conversation Game for Apple Watch, iPhone, & iPad

When the Soviets abandoned a secret AI experiment in 1985 they forgot one thing: to turn off the power

AUSTIN, TEXAS – October 7, 2015 – Sentient Play, an independent developer of AI-driven “conversation games,” is announcing that K.O.M.R.A.D. will release soon for Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. Designed by Brad Becker, former Chief Design Officer of IBM’s sophisticated AI platform Watson, K.O.M.R.A.D. gives an entertaining glimpse into how far artificial intelligence has come in the past 30 years… and where it could be headed.

Your phone or Apple Watch chimes with a text message from an unknown number. In broken English, you’re informed that your online accounts have been hijacked — passwords changed, identity stolen. You can get it all back in return for a simple task: hack into a Russian computer untouched since the 1980s and probe it for useful information. How, exactly? That’s where your people skills come in, because K.O.M.R.A.D. isn’t any ordinary computer — it’s an experimental Soviet artificial intelligence that doesn’t know the Cold War ended.

Playing out as a real-time conversation between you and the roused AI, K.O.M.R.A.D. is a psychological narrative game based on real history and real technology. What does a Cold War era computer know, what assumptions will it make, and how can you gain its trust? Find out through brief text exchanges delivered via push notifications over several days. If you manage to make K.O.M.R.A.D. your ally, you can use this powerful technology for good. And if you fail, well, the fallout might be nuclear.

Inspired by 1980s text adventures and gamebooks, conversation games such as K.O.M.R.A.D. will tell stories via interactive dialogues optimized for Apple Watch and other mobile devices, in short bursts convenient for playing on the go and with branching outcomes that tailor consequences to players’ choices. K.O.M.R.A.D. will be the first release from the newly formed Sentient Play, a lab Becker founded to explore the potential of interaction between people and advanced technology such as virtual reality, wearables, and AI.

“By simulating an experience of chatting with an advanced artificial intelligence, I want to give people a chance to play with the future,” says Becker, whose work on IBM Watson included design, user experience, and envisioning the AI’s potential applications. “But Sentient Play isn’t only here for fun and games. Technology is advancing ahead of our understanding of what people actually need and want from it. Games like K.O.M.R.A.D. will help us figure that out while we still have time to shape the technology.”

New content and trailer for Valhalla Hills

Update brings players new game mode called “Open Game” and many more changes

Hamburg, October 7th, 2015: Valhalla Hills by Daedalic Entertainment and Funatics has been available in Steam’s Early Access for a couple of weeks now. In this time, a lot of community and player feedback has been collected and taken into consideration. The result is this first big update, implementing the new game mode “Open Game”, among many other things.

This new mode features all current game elements without having to unlock them individually by playing. Also, from October 16th till November 15th, the Viking’s town will turn into a spooktacular scenery thanks to various Halloween decorations. So, this update is a good opportunity to check out, or to return to the world of Valhalla Hills!

About Valhalla Hills:

Valhalla Hills is a modern strategy game inspired by classic game designs like “The Settlers II” or “Cultures”.

The player has to lead the exiled Viking heroes to the highest peak of a mountain, where a magic portal leads the way to Valhalla. But the Vikings need to do one thing first: survive!

The player has to face the dangers and challenges of the harsh mountains and find a way to the peak. Since the Vikings wouldn’t last long in the mountains, they have to take care of clothing, food and shelter and defend against ghostly mountain dwellers and wild beasts. These sturdy people have their own head and since a good keg of mead is a solid reason to slack around, all this is easier said than done. However, another threat looms, sailing in from the ocean…

Features:

 High replay value through procedurally generated maps
 Developed by Funatics, the creators of Cultures and the Settlers II
 Exactly what strategy simulation fans were waiting for!
 Developed with the Unreal 4 Engine
 The first game created in this style since “The Settlers”
 Many exciting extras like individually naming your Vikings

Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Interview with David Vonderhaar

call-of-duty-black-ops-iii-logo-001

Call of Duty. Love it or hate it, it is hard to find a single franchise more synonymous with video games in this day and age than Activision’s first person shooter. From product launches that make as much money as Hollywood blockbusters, to multi million dollar esports events, Call of Duty has it all. Well, at this year’s EB Games Expo, I got to sit down with David Vonderhaar, the Studio Design Director for the Black Ops franchise, and we got to have a quick five minute chat about Call of Duty: Black Ops III. enjoy!

Hi everyone, I’m Andrew Day for Capsule Computers and today I’m here with David Vonderhaar and we’re here to talk about Black Ops III.

I know something about that game!

Well I certainly hope so! You’re the studio design director for the game, so for those of us not familiar with how the development side of things works, could you tell us what your role entails?

Oh wow, where to start! Long story short. Treyarch is a big studio filled with hard working men and women. From the design department point of view there is a creative director and a design director. The creative director generally deals with a very macro level, the narrative side of things and the campaign storytelling. The design director managers like the “systems team.” How the whole thing flows together. I work a lot on multiplayer and systems that aren’t specific to any one part of the game but that exist in the meta above it. What it all boils down to is the job is mostly about making sure the team has the resources that they need to be successful and make the best game of their lives.

call-of-duty-black-ops-iii-screenshot-03

Ok so lets get straight into talking about the game design shall we? You’ve got Black Ops III coming out this year…

November 6th

November 6th! Coming up against some pretty big competition this year in the FPS realm with Halo and Star Wars coming out at around the same time. So what is going to set Black Ops apart from not only those, but also previous Call of Duty Games?

Yeah so Black Ops III is an online connected game. When you put that disc in and you hit play, you’re going to start in an online lobby. We’re telling you right away that this is a game you should be playing with other people, and these experiences are very unique in a very Treyarch way with Zombies: Shadows of Evil, which is the on-disc zombies experience campaign with its super dark, super gritty narrative storytelling. And as a Co-Op game it is off the rails. You’ve got big open arena style battles that’s not like something you’ve had before even with Black Ops II.

And of course you know we bring the heat on multiplayer. Bring on the competition! We have a very popular online game and we have that because of those deep progression systems and all the social features there. The arena feature which is how you play competitively. Really robust custom games. There’s something in this game for all sorts of players, and all sorts of players to play with their friends online and to move through those things.

Call-of-Duty-Black-Ops-III-screenshot-005

That’s awesome. So you just mentioned there competitive play. The Call of Duty franchise is probably one of the more competitive games out there, especially with the esports scene. Do you guys have any plans for that side of the game going forward?

Massive. So there’s a bunch of stuff going on in the competitive agenda alone. So, of course we have  a very big, robust game – 55 levels, 10 levels of prestige, 150 pieces of create-a-class content, the new specialists which are the nine playable heroes each with a weapon or ability. That’s all foundational.

On top of that we have Arena. So Arena is how we deal with the competitive side of things for the masses. So, Arena has a ranking system where you’re ranked on wins and wins alone. So if you win and your team wins then you’re going up in rank. If you lose then you’re not going up in rank so its very simple. It’s not point based, its not ladder based, its not complex for people to understand.

Inside the arena we do two cool things. We have “Protects & Bans” and “special strats.” Protects & Bans is the special system where you as a player, in a round robin voting system can say “this gun: I ban it.” So then nobody can use it in this game. Or, you can use your vote to protect something, “I protect: Ruin Overdrive.” That means it can’t be banned. So there is this whole metagame that goes on right before the multiplayer match starts.

When you play Arena you’re not missing out. You’re still ranking up, you’re still earning experience with the guns and all that stuff is still there but because it is competitive all that stuff is available to you right off the bat.

call-of-duty-black-ops-3-screenshot-co-op-trailer-01

Cool! So lets talk more about Single Player again a bit. How, I guess “robust” is the campaign this time around?

Oh it is a massive campaign! By far the largest campaign that we’ve ever had in terms of how much game there is to play, and the story that unfolds there. I think people will be really surprised, see this is one of the great things about the three-year development cycle that we have. It really gives you some time to plan and execute on that level.

When you play the campaign, you’re gonna feel like  you have a lot more agency over the battle, right? Because you’re playing the character, equipping the character, deciding what cyber core you want,  what weapons to take. You’re in the Safe House which is this whole environment that exists to launch missions from where you can train and equip. Not only that but it has multiplayer, meaning if you’re playing with others there’s gonna be other people in there. You can plan how you’re gonna approach the battle and then go do that. We’ve never had anything like that in Call of Duty.

It sounds like you guys have worked really hard to combine everything and make it feel like the player is more in control that ever.

Yeah that’s right! We’re still gonna tell a story, we’re still gonna take you on an adventure, but you can still do all those things and still have a lot of agency.

Sounds great! I think that’s about all the questions I had for tonight, thankyou very much for chatting with us and I look forward to playing the game when it launches on November 6th!

Thankyou!

Dark Souls III Hands-On Preview

dark-souls-3-artwork-001

It’s safe to say that Dark Souls III was by FAR my most anticipated game of the EB Expo. I was curious to see not only what From Software could do to further enhance the series, but also whether or not some inspiration would be drawn from Namco and From Software’s smash hit Bloodborne, and finally whether or not the return of Hidetaka Miyazaki as game director would breathe new life into the series. Sadly, since I only had such a brief amount of time with the game (around 20 minutes) many of these questions still went unanswered.

One question that was answered was how Dark Souls III would look on next-gen consoles. The Souls series of games have always been known for sacrificing top-of the line visuals in favour of solid gameplay, and Dark Souls III looks to be no exception. That isn’t to say that the game looks ugly by any stretch of the imagination; the character and enemy models look superb and the desolate landscape is brimming with character unto itself. I could also see a lot of Bloodborne’s inspiration in the locale, which looked like a slightly more medieval take on the rooftops of Yharnam. It was kind of cool to see the styles of the two games meet each other like this.

Gameplay-wise, it felt exactly like you would want it to. That is to say, it felt like Dark Souls. Controls were right and responsive. The weapons all felt different (there were three weapon type to try out in the demo build) the enemies had a terrifying presence and the items all looked and felt familiar. best of all; It ran as smooth as silk!

I really wanted more time with Dark Souls III, but even with just the short time that I had, I am already excited. Thankfully the Dark Souls III Network Test is coming up soon and after that we only have to wait until early next year to prepare to die all over again.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 Hands-On Preview

I’m not shy in admitting that I love EA’s Plants v Zombies series in all of its forms, and the surprisingly fun Garden Warfare was probably my favourite installment of the bunch. That’s why when I found out a sequel was being released I had a mixture of enthusiasm and cautious optimism. What more could they do? Will this feel like a cheap cash-in? Well after playing a few rounds of the game, I am starting to feel a little more certain of my thoughts.

So the game mode i got to play at this year’s EB Games expo had me and three other zombies defending our base from an onslaught of AI controlled plants. While this game mode isn’t anything new, what was different was the fact that there were a whole bunch of new character types for you to play as. My favourite of the new bunch was definitely the new Superhero-Zombie who was a physical attacker who’s only means of ranged attack was a special hadouken-style attack. One thing I really took from my time with the game was that the developers really worked hard to have the characters all feel new, unique and fresh not only from one another but also from those in the first game.

Visually, not much has changed this time around. The map that I played was pretty highly populated and offered multiple paths and vantage points to come at your enemies. I would like to see how these maps play in a more competitive PvP setting.

When all is said and done however, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 just felt like an expansion of the original. We’re my couple of rounds fun? Absolutely, but at this point I don’t know if it is worth purchasing a whole new game. I am willing to be proven wrong when the full game launches in 2016 but for now I am treating this one with caution.
