Overview
Over the years Telltale Games has managed to land a number of popular licensed properties and turn out golden series with only a few misses here and there. When it was announced that they would be tackling Minecraft and providing an original storyline set in the world, some were skeptical but now that the first episode, The Order of the Stone, has been released for Minecraft: Story Mode, is this series worth starting?

Story
Players begin by selecting how they want their main character to look and whether they wish to be a male or female. Once this decision is made they find themselves placed in the shoes of Jesse, an aspiring builder who is a huge fan of the legendary heroes known as the Order of the Stone. These four heroes are renown for different things, such as their prowess in battle, building skills, and more, and are best known for venturing forth into the Ender and defeating the Ender Dragon.

Since they managed to accomplish this feat, the group has long since disbanded but one of the heroes will soon be attending the Ender Con that will be held at a nearby location near Jesse’s location. Teaming up with his friends, a confident girl named Olivia, the loyal but occasionally annoying Alex, and his pet pig named Reuben, Jesse enters a building contest where they try to win firsthand tickets to meet one of their heroes.

Of course, regardless of how things unfold during the build contest Jesse and the group eventually find themselves as the few people who can gather those who can put an end to a threat awakened due to the unknown past of the Order of the Stone. This type of revelation comes late in the first episode serves as the only element of actual groundwork being laid for a story beyond the big bad creature threatening to swallow the world.

The rest of the story up to this point serves in laying the groundwork for the world of Minecraft: Story Mode, as we see that your average person in this story simply lives their life out without really digging for treasures and always building elaborate set pieces. Of course these elements will play out best for those who are fans of Minecraft and know of the series’ various mechanics, such as how enemies appear at night and in dark locations, the threats that roam through the Nether, and other nuances that are only barely touched upon for those who are newcomers to the series.

As one may expect considering the subject material, Minecraft: Story Mode is a departure from what Telltale has previously been known for in their stories. Adopting a more family friendly approach, the series does feel like it lacks some element of actual drama here as most choices made by the player carry very little immediate weight and only a few appear to actually change how things may unfold later on, though the final choice may play a heavy role on how events at least start to unfold in the second episode.

minecraft-story-mode-screenshot-001

While the dramatic elements may not deliver despite the “life and death” situations still being there, only playing zero role so far, the comedy is still fairly enjoyable. It is worth noting that quite a number of the jokes do rely on player knowledge from the series as certain references and a few easter eggs may only be caught by fans of the source material. That being said, there are a number of rather humorous segments parodying the nature of Minecraft as a whole via a montage which even non-fans will enjoy while the character interactions are enjoyable enough for players to get a bead on each of their personalities.

Gameplay
Although the core game may rely on players wandering around and gathering items to craft things, Minecraft: Story Mode doesn’t step outside the boundaries of what Telltale Games are known for lately. The majority of the time players will spend in this first episode involves making dialogue decisions or taking part in quick time events. It is worth noting that even the building aspect, which comes up a few times in this episode, is handled simply through tapping a button as quick as possible as the characters gather and build.

There are a few light puzzles mixed into the fray as well, mostly in the form of a creating items on a crafting table in a method that fans will enjoy, especially if they decide to take the humorous route, and taking part in a switch puzzle that is easy to solve. Outside of the puzzles there are of course the action sequences that see the player having to tap a button or move the analog stick to dodge and for the most part, many of these sequences won’t even result in player death. A few pieces of combat where players do have to move forward and take a swing at enemies do appear from time to time but are nothing more than simple scenes that provide a little extra control over what Jesse is doing.

Visuals & Audio
In a departure from what Telltale is used to, Minecraft: Story Mode appears to have been developed using the exact Minecraft engine making sure that almost every element of the game is visually represented in the series’ iconic blocky low-res style. The enemies, environment, and various materials are all replicated here perfectly and some of the designs that are shown throughout The Order of the Stone are quite a treat for those who like elaborate looking buildings.

The developers have also managed to take the low detailed character models and successfully put just enough expressions onto their faces as needed by either widening or narrowing their eyes and using their eyebrows to great effect to convey emotion in a manner that works very well given the cartoon nature of the designs.

Speaking of the characters, it is worth noting that the voice actors for the cast have done an impressive job with their roles here, with the male Jesse being voiced by Patton Oswalt and a number of other well-known voice actors stepping in to give their characters enough personality to stand out despite their simplistic appearances.

Overall
The Order of the Stone kicks things off for Minecraft: Story Mode and it does so in a fairly tepid way. While it does get Jesse and the gang moving towards trying to put a stop to the dangerous being threatening their world, it only shows its real colors in the last five minutes. Although the writers opted to play it as safe as possible at the start of this series, the first episode does serve as a decent foundation for events that will unfold later on and gives Minecraft fans a perfectly recreated world with a decent amount of humor that I can only hope will be expanded upon in the future.

Rockstar North is shipping out a content update next week for GTA: Online. Entitled “Lowriders,” the pack will be focused on car customization and vehicles perfect for Lowrider customization. For the uninitiated, Lowriders started in Los Angeles in the Mexican-American parts of the city. Modders began lowering their cars close to the ground, and a little later in response to new laws, adding hydraulic lifts to the vehicles. Decades later, it’s a vibrant mod scene known for its colourful paint jobs and the signature low to the ground look.

Benny’s Original Motor Works serves as the customization hub for six vehicles that accept a variety of mods like covers air filters, new interiors, custom paint jobs, better speaker systems, and hydraulic lift systems. The pack also introduces new missions, an automatic machine pistol, the machete, and more purchasable property.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator Popularity Poll Reveals Dizzy as Next Playable Character

Arc System Works had been holding a character popularity contest to try and select the next playable character that would be added to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator and only those who played the game in arcades could vote at the time. Now that the contest has wrapped up the company has announced who will be joining the fighting game next and it just so happens to be my personal favorite, Dizzy. Dizzy won by a fairly slim margin as she was followed closely by Bridget and Baiken, only beating Bridget by a few hundred votes.

Currently there is no set date on when Dizzy will be added to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator but currently the title is set to be released in Japan on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Spring 2016.

Ready for take-off: “Red Bull Air Race – The Game” pilots are flying to the Grand Finale in Las Vegas!

Ready for take-off: “Red Bull Air Race – The Game” pilots are flying to the Grand Finale in Las Vegas!

Salzburg, Austria – October 16, 2015 The finalists of the Red Bull Air Race Virtual Championship 2015 are set, five courageous pilots emerged victorious in the qualifiers. Now, an all-inclusive-trip to the season finale of the real championship in Las Vegas awaits the finalists. Of course they will also fight it out for the title of „Virtual World Champion“. The price includes an official trophy, a meet & greet with the real champion and a G-flight in an original Red Bull Air Race plane!

But who are the lucky winners of the qualifying races? Here are more details on the five finalists and a sneak peak of what awaits them on October 17 and 18, 2015 in the gambling capital of the world, Las Vegas, USA: https://youtu.be/UdeWQpOTmsI

Aleksandr Ivanikov (Russia): 55,816 seconds in Chiba

34-year old Aleksandr Ivanikov secured the first ticket for the Virtual World Championship in Red Bull Air Race – The Game. Aleksandr is an occasional gamer and mainly loves action games, though right now he is all about Red Bull Air Race – The Game. He first caught the virtual race bug in January 2015, since then, the engineer is fascinated by the different levels of difficulty and the smart ambience. He’ll be training vigorously until the Virtual World Championship finale. He already has a specific strategy: „Most importantly: don’t oversleep“, because his dream is to win. In real life, the Russian loves racing action as well, since 2004 he occasionally sits in the cockpit, which is why his biggest wish is finding a sponsor to participate in the actual Red Bull Air Race, like his biggest idol Svetlana Kapanina. Until then, the 34-year old is looking forward to a terrific finale and wishes good look to all his competitors.

Daniel Hable (Austria): 46.151 seconds in Rovinj

During the second qualifying race, Daniel from Lower Austria led the field. The occasional mobile gamer turns serious during a competition. The trained carpenter prefers playing in the evenings. When the first mobile version of Red Bull Air Race – The Game was released in 2014, Daniel became an instant racing fan and started competing online against other players. Measuring up against others is the biggest appeal to him. Equally appealing is the Las Vegas race course, his all-time-favorite. To ensure nothing goes wrong during the Grand Finale, the 26-year old is practicing hard to fly the course as tightly as possible while avoiding crashing into the pylons. According to Daniel, there is no secret trick to it, it’s a simple case of practice makes perfect. Thrilled by the speed of the sport, the Austrian also follows the real Red Bull Air Race championship. While he has no ambitions to sit behind the cockpit of a real plane, he is still looking forward to an exiting finale.

Werner Pany (Austria): 57.2332 seconds in Budapest

The second Austrian in the line-up is Werner Pany, who moved up as the second place winner at the race in Hungary. Werner hails from beautiful Tirol and plays whenever he finds the time. Currently, the 35-year old spends around an hour a day on Red Bull Air Race – The Game. „Everything should be enjoyed in moderation“ says the father of two. He started playing Red Bull Air Race – The Game around one and a half years ago. The graphics and the competition to achieve the best times are what fascinated him the most. His favorite tracks are Budapest and Spielberg. At the latter, Werner even won a flight with Austrian stunt flyer Hannes Arch, an immense honor for the self-confessed Arch-Fan, which is why the 35-years has a fairly relaxed attitude towards the finale in Las Vegas. Instead of practicing, Werner focuses on his biggest hobby, stunt flying, and wishes good luck to all participants – the best racer will surely deserve to win.

Mickael Costa (France): 55.2449 seconds in Spielberg

French Mickael Costa grabbed the win on the cult-track in Spielberg. The passionate gamer from Blois in France loves adventure and is a huge fan of the Zelda-saga. Since he has to concentrate on his university work, the 20-year old usually plays on weekends, but trains on the different race tracks during any downtime between lectures. The real Red Bull Air Race has always been a dream for the Frenchman, which is why he started playing Red Bull Air Race – The Game one and a half years ago. Mickael is especially excited about the atmosphere in Las Vegas. But the 20-year old doesn’t have a specific strategy to emerge as the winner. With aggressive maneuvers and accurate flight through the curves, he will give his all to win – although the fun playing is the most important thing for him. The French student could envision his future career in a cockpit – either as a racing pilot or a stunt flyer.

Richard Bartelt (Slovakia): 75.5946 seconds in Ascot

The last finalist is Slovakian Richard Bartelt. The 35-year old IT-expert and software developer lives in Bratislava. Outside of his job, Richard only plays mobile games – though not around the clock, instead he prefers to take quick gaming-breaks. An aviation enthusiast through and through, the IT-expert mainly loves games centered around flying. The Slovakian first encountered Red Bull Air Race – The Game in September 2014. His passion for multiplayer games and the opportunity to compete with others drive him to excel on the race track. „But when all eyes are on your competition during a fantastic finale, everything changes“, says Richard. Which is why he doesn’t have a specific strategy or tricks up his sleeve. The most important thing for him is to keep a clear head and deal with the pressure. Until the final race, Richard is still preparing and trying to internalize the race track in his head and his fingers. He wishes all his competitors good luck and may the best pilot win.
