RUNESCAPE COUNTS DOWN TO 15-YEAR CELEBRATIONS

RUNESCAPE COUNTS DOWN TO 15-YEAR CELEBRATIONS

New continent, Chronicle multi-platform launch, feature documentary premiere, founders’ quest and much more coming to RuneScape franchise in 2016.

Wednesday 16th December 2015, Cambridge, UK – Jagex Games Studio, creators and custodians of the fantasy MMORPG RuneScape, have today confirmed a raft of new content launching throughout 2016 to celebrate the game’s 15th anniversary. Andrew and Paul Gower, the founders of RuneScape back in 2001, are returning as guest designers for a ‘Gower Quest’, due for release in spring 2016. A new game client technology that will take RuneScape’s visuals to a new level of fidelity will also be introduced, together with four quests that conclude the epic God Wars storyline, which first started in 2013. Furthermore, Invention – a new skill – will be introduced to the game, allowing players to personalise weapons and armour, and make them more technically advanced.

Old School RuneScape will also join in the revelry, with the launch of an entire new continent, Zeah, which will be introduced in three parts throughout 2016. Old School – a retro version of the MMORPG – will also reach its three-year milestone. Furthermore, an eSports tournament using the game’s recently launched Deadman Mode will take place at the end of March 2016. Additional details on this will follow early in the New Year.

In addition to the two established titles in the franchise, 2016 will see Chronicle: RuneScape Legends commercially launched on PC, Mac, Linux and iPad.  February will see the premiere of a feature-length documentary about RuneScape, its creation, and the impact it has had on the MMORPG genre and the wider UK games industry.

“To reach this incredible 15-year anniversary milestone is astonishing for everybody working on RuneScape, especially as it continues to experience a fantastic resurgence of players. It is testament to our loyal, passionate, and growing community, that the development teams at Jagex can continue to tell new stories within the world of Gielinor,” said Phil Mansell, vice president, RuneScape. “Next year will be another big step forward for the RuneScape franchise, with exciting new features, technology and even new games across multiple platforms – 2016 will be a year to remember!”

Pokemon 2016 Worlds Qualifier Details Announced

pokemon-vgc-2016-preview-01

The official Pokemon website has updated with details on how players can qualify to compete in Nintendo‘s 2016 Pokemon World Championships happening on August 19-21 in San Francisco next year. For those in Australia and the surrounding Asia Pacific region it is great news as our Championship Point bar has been set arguably low considering the amount of points on offer this season, where a top 32 at Nationals alone will see you through with an invite. Full details taken from the official site are below.

Top video game players from different rating zones will receive invitations based on their Championship Points standing at the end of the season. Invitations will be divided into two tiers: players who reach a certain Championship Points standing will receive an invitation to play in Day One on Friday, and the best players in each zone automatically qualify for Day Two and will also receive a Travel Award. Invitations will be distributed as follows:

 Masters DivisionSenior DivisionJunior Division
US and Canada350 CP325 CP200 CP
Europe275 CP200 CP100 CP
Latin America150 CP100 CP100 CP
Asia Pacific200 CP150 CP100 CP
South Africa400 CP400 CP400 CP

Some players will earn an invitation that allows them to advance directly to Day Two without playing in Friday’s rounds. These invitations will also include Travel Awards. Day Two invitations are divided by rating zone as follows:

  • The Top 8 players from the US and Canada rating zone
  • The Top 16 players from the Europe rating zone
  • The Top 4 players from the Latin America rating zone
  • The Top 4 players from the Asia Pacific rating zone

The structure of how the World Tournament will run has also been disclosed and it will be a large three day event with the number of Swiss rounds being dependant on total attendance at the event. Swiss rounds will use the best-of-three game format.

Friday: All players with Friday invitations will play Swiss rounds. Players with 2 or fewer losses will advance to Day Two Saturday.

Saturday: Swiss rounds for players who earned a Day Two invitation and players who advanced from Friday. This will be a new tournament: match records from Friday will not carry forward, and players are not required to use the same team they played with on Friday.

Late Saturday: A top cut of players with no more than two losses (with no ties) will compete in single-elimination rounds. These rounds will use the best-of-three game format.

Sunday: Finals.

Let us know in the comments below if you’ll be competing in this year’s Pokemon competitive season and what you think of the new changes. You can check out our Championship Point Distribution and VGC 2016 rule set for more details on how the 2016 Pokemon VGC season will operate.

Final Smash Bros. DLC Detailed, Cloud Coming Today!

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-03

The final news regarding Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS ever has been delivered and it was a mixed bag depending on who you wanted to get in with two new stages and two brand new character announcements.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-04

The first new character is unbelievably another Fire Emblem character, this time from the upcoming Fire Emblem Fates game. The player character Corrin will be playable though he looks a fair bit different than the rest of the Fire Emblem cast, being able to use certain Dragon Powers to transform his body for some attacks. Corrin will be playable in male or female similar to Robin. Corrin’s Final Smash is Torrential Roar and transports players to a empty field before blowing them away.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-06

New songs will come with Corrin on the Wii U version for the Fire Emblem stages already in the game. It’s cool how different the character looks but it’s very easy to say the Fire Emblem series is now way to heavily represented in Smash Bros.  Corrin is landing sometime in February and will come with two new songs for the existing Fire Emblem stages (one each).

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-07

Square Enix’s character Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII will be available to download in a few hours from the posting of this article, however Nintendo have said they expect heavy traffic on the servers which could mean you might be waiting for a while. Cloud has a unique mechanic similar to Little Mac where a Limit Gauge powers up when Cloud is hit or hits someone and it can also be charged with Down Special. All of Clouds special attacks are powered up when the Limit Gauge is full.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-08

Cloud comes with the beautiful looking Midgar stage which has many unique properties such as players being able to collect Summon Materia to perform powerful summons. These summons have many different effects on the stage. If the stage gets split in two by Odin you will instantly die if you get caught between the two platforms merging back together. Cloud and the Midgar stage will be available on both versions. Tetsuya Nomura has drawn some very cool art in Kindgom Hearts like style to celebrate the inclusion.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-15

More Mii costumes for the final two waves have also been announced. Chocobo, Geno from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 stars, Bionic Armour (seems to be unique or from Metroid), Takamaru (like the assist trophy), Ashley from Wario Ware, Gil (from the Tower of Druaga) and lastly Tails and Knuckles from Sonic. Looks like Tails finally made it into a Smash Bros game after all. The official site is offering QR codes so players can download the Mii’s from the promo videos that best match the official costumes.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-24

The Final Challenger ever for Smash Bros is Bayonetta! She has many of the powers from the Bayonetta games such as Witch Time and Summons as well as her classic ability to wield four guns at once. She has costumes from both her major appearances and her alts reflect the colours of her comrades from the games. Her down special is Witch Time, which works kind of like a counter but slows down time instead of being an attack. Bayonetta seems like a complicated character similar to Ryu being very combo heavy, with the video demonstrating a 10 hit combo made of many different attacks. Her Final Smash is very unique as well, triggering Witch Time but requiring you to hit your opponents to build up a gauge for the attack to be effective. Gemora then appears to instantly kill anyone that is over 100% damage.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-20

Bayonetta will come with the new stage in Umbra Clock Tower. The stage is in constant free fall with other platforms moving around as well. The stage will feature many popular songs from both games. Bayonetta and the new stage will be releasing in February just like Corrin. Bayonetta was the number 1 choice from the Smash Bros across a worldwide average, being number 1 in Europe and top 5 in North America. From the way Sakurai spoke though it seemed more to mean she was the most requested character available that they could get the rights to to use in game.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-25

For Amiibo fans, Amiibo of Ryu, Roy and R.O.B. Famicom Colorus will be available March 8th. All 3 new characters announced today are confirmed to be receiving Amiibo as well. Sakurai did a little bragging at the end of the video claming the game has set many records for it self including 58 fighters, 84 stages across both versions of the game, 99 Mii Costumes and 97 Mii hates, 743 Wii U trophies and 707 for the 3DS and there 507 music tracks for stages when you include all the games DLC. Pretty impressive.

Smash-bros-final-direct-screenshot-26

Let us know what you think of these announcements in the comments below and we apologise to anyone whose character’s didn’t make it in. I was hoping for Banjo Kazooie myself honestly. You can re-watch the full presentation which has been embedded below.
