Competitive Game Shifts Back to Become Part of ARK: Survival Evolved to Allow Unlimited Modding; Survivor Leagues Continue for Teams to Battle for Monthly Cash Prizes; Steam Sale at 50% Off Until 10 pm PST, August 4

Seattle, WA – August 1, 2016 – Studio Wildcard announced today it will now offer full Steam Workshop support for the competitive dinosaur survival spin-off ARK: Survival of the Fittest (ARK: SotF) including mods, maps, and total conversions across all PC/Mac/Linux/Steam OS platforms. Starting today ARK: SotF will no longer be a standalone game, but be re-integrated into ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK: SE) so the developer is able to provide unlimited modding support which will then offer users the ability to freely take assets from ARK: SE and move them into ARK: SotF without restriction.

“We think that Steam Workshop support for Survival of the Fittest is a significant addition — it’s pretty much the most-requested feature for the game at the present time,” said Jeremy Stieglitz, lead designer, programmer, and co-founder, Studio Wildcard. “We can now support unlimited modding with both games and modders have instant access to work with new content as it drops into either game.”

Reminder! Right now ARK: Survival Evolved is 50% off its retail price, making it the best deal ever on this dinosaur experience. Go buy it on Steam before the sale ends at 10 pm PST, Thursday, August 4, to start taming, training, riding and breeding dinosaurs!

In the last year more than 4,000 mods have been created by the ARK community, including two that have been selected to be included in the main ARK: Survival Evolved game — total conversion mod The Center and functionality mod Primitive+. Players who have purchased ARK: Survival Evolved can begin their own mods immediately! Follow the “How To Mod” tutorial to get started, then join the ARK community, participate in the Unreal Engine ARK Modding forum, and find content in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Modders can then share their creations with the ARK gamer community using Steam Workshop.

Tune in starting at 8 am PST, Saturday, August 6, as the July Survivor League Championship pits the top ranking ARK: Survival of the Fittest teams in each of three game modes against each other for a high-stakes bounty of more than $65,000 in prizes. Come watch all the epic battles hosted by shoutcaster typeForced at www.twitch.tv/survivetheark.

Originally designed as a mod for ARK: Survival Evolved, the competitive ARK: Survival of the Fittest is a multiplayer online survival arena (M.O.S.A.) game that pits as many as 72 combatants against one another in spontaneous Hunger Games-style competitions within a closed battlefield, where a continually shrinking “ring of death” will push survivors into an epic final showdown with only one “Tribe” making it out alive.

Survivors can form one- to six-person tribes with the option to choose Unofficial (PC-hosted) and Official (Ranked) servers, and a variety of game-lengths and sizes in which to play. Players will start in the base forest environment introduced in the original ARK: Survival Evolved, with new environments and creatures introduced regularly as the game evolves. Dedicated eSport ranking, matchmaking, and tournament features make ARK: Survival of the Fittest readily accessible to all players.

ARK: Survival Evolved takes on the survival genre with a unique blend of emergent multiplayer cooperation and competition. Players must hunt, harvest, craft, research technology, and build shelters to protect against punishing climate conditions, dangerous wildlife, and potential enemies. Tame and ride one of 100 prehistoric beasts, including gargantuan creatures on a scale never before seen in video games! Fly a Pterodactyl squadron over the snow-capped mountains, race through the deep jungle with a pack of trained Raptors, tromp through a fortified enemy base along a convoy of gigantic Brontosaurus, or chase down prey on the back of a raging T-Rex.

Snail Games Announces Dark and Light at ChinaJoy 2016 Expo in Shanghai

Snail Games Announces Dark and Light at ChinaJoy 2016 Expo in Shanghai

Shanghai – August 1st, 2016 Chinese game developer and publisher Snail Games is making a major step forward in the PC gaming market with its latest sandbox MMO – Dark and Light, announced at the ChinaJoy 2016 expo in Shanghai. After more than ten years since development first began, the game has finally come onto the scene again this year.

One World, Twelve Years

Dark and Light first caught the public’s eye back in 2004 with its impressive 40,000 square-kilometer world, the largest ever MMORPG map.

The original concept of Dark and Light was to provide a deep and realistic world simulation, complete with complex systems for each of the necessary parts of a real world – weather, landscape, wildlife, plants, even laws. All the systems were connected, meaning that a change in any one system would drastically affect all the others, however, these deep, interlacing systems lead to numerous difficulties during the game’s early stages of development.

With the breakthrough of a new game engine in 2008, Snail Games refocused its efforts on Dark and Light, determined to see this phenomenal sandbox MMO concept all the way to completion. A teaser video of Dark and Light was released in 2012, showcasing the progress that had been made up to that point, but due to several factors, no further information about game was released after that teaser, leading fans to wonder whether the game would ever make it to release.

Change in Consistency

After nearly four years of silence, at ChinaJoy 2016, Snail Games unveiled that Dark and Light was alive and well. In fact, it was clear that the game had been largely improved since the last time it was shown, from the game engine to the game mechanics.

With the revolutionary UE4 engine, the difference between the current version of the game and its previous iteration is night and day. The game’s lore and setup has also been significantly updated with multiple universes, three races, and a rivalry between the dark and light all setting a new tone for the game.

In addition to the improvements in visual fidelity and changes to the fictional game world, Dark and Light now boasts a more magical fantasy element with the inclusion of sorcerers and aliens, which tie into the central conflict of the game. Players will be able to explore a simulated world that not only feels real and believable but also feels imaginative and new.

Over the past 12 years, the enthusiasm of the developers at Snail Games to deliver an amazing virtual world with complete freedom has never wavered. With the continuing improvements to our game engine and the unremitting effort of our development team, the next phenomenal Sandbox MMO – Dark and Light will soon be launched in 2016.

Big Trouble in Little China Review

Big Trouble in Little China

Format: Cinema
Release Date: Out now

Overview

Although it is not entirely clear how or why a film develops a cult following, the works of director John Carpenter (more often than not) appear to have the unique quality required to do so. His body of work includes cult classics like Escape From New York, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, and Big Trouble in Little China. Being the cinephile that I am, I was excited at the prospect of seeing Big Trouble upon the big screen as any 80s action comedy involving highly choreographed martial arts really should be consumed. I flying kicked my way down to George St cinemas to check out the In The House screening of the classic martial arts comedy.

Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn played host before the film started and warmed the audience up. As well as running a vigorous game of ‘rock, paper, scissors’ with members of the audience to give prizes away, they spoke a bit about various trivia tid bits regarding the film and its production. Of particular interest to me was Quinny’s comparison of this film to the first Mortal Kombat movie and how similar the visual designs of various characters were. A highlight for me, of this pre-screening entertainment, was when they asked a particularly proficient Jack Burton cosplayer to come up to the front and show off his rouge… watch the film and you’ll get what I mean. After they had finished warming up the audience, the screening proper started.

Big-Trouble-in-Little-China-Screenshot-03

Story

The film very quickly introduces us to its notional protagonist: a loud mouthed truck driver with more bravado than brains called Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) who is visiting his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) in San Francisco. While the two wait at the airport; Wang’s fiancé, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), gets kidnapped by a Chinese street gang. The gang were actually attempting to kidnap another woman but after Jack intervenes grab Miao instead. After foraying into the alleyways and of Chinatown and losing Jack’s truck trying to find Miao, Jack and Wang encounter strange supernatural forces at play in a battle far larger than they realise. They both have to team up with a strong-willed lawyer named Gracie Law (Kim Cattral) and a magic using tour bus driver named Egg Shen (Victor Wong) in order to rescue Miao and put a stop to an evil sorcerer, Lo Pan (James Hong), lurking in Chinatown.

The first thing you’ll notice with the writing is how hammy it is with lots of melodramatic and stilted dialogue. A lot of the dialogue of the Asian characters is nothing but quasi-spiritual exposition… like they’ve all spent time learning ancient wisdom in temples located on mountainsides. In juxtaposition, Jack’s dialogue is decidedly more lowbrow and shallow with Russell delivering the lines with an almost drunken drawl. Hong as Lo Pan brings a bit more nuance to his character by oscillating between stoic mystic and petulant child… so if you’ve ever wanted to see a millennia old demonic sorcerer curse like a spoilt pre-teen then this film is for you. The performances from the ensemble cast do an excellent job of delivering the over-the-top lines to make the, actually quite simple, narrative work with plenty of ham. If this film was a dish, it wouldn’t be kosher but the ample presence of ham are what make it oh-so-good.

Big-Trouble-in-Little-China-Screenshot-02

Another thing you’ll notice is the fact that although Jack Burton is the main focus of the film’s narrative, he’s certainly not the protagonist as they bumble their way through complication after complication. Despite Russell’s bluster and bravado, the story is very much more Wang’s adventure as he works to defeat the villain and rescue his fiancé. A close comparison I could make would be with the most recent Mad Max film except where Max was a cool side-character, Jack is more of a loud-mouthed comic relief sidekick. It works exceptionally well in conjunction with the story’s overall parodic intent to spoof shlocky martial arts films of its’ time and ultimately makes this film have a greater depth to it which has given it the status of a classic. So although Wang may save the day, it’s Jack and his incompetence that makes this movie worth watching.

At this point I feel I should address the elephant in the room and talk about the film’s representation of women characters and the problems it displays. Pretty much every female character in this film gets kidnapped and needs to be rescued by the Wang and Jack. Although the character of Gracie certain has a lot of agency in how she develops the plot and is shown to be a capable protagonist in the story but by the end she largely becomes a damsel-in-distress. On the other hand; I believe the film does really well with its representation of individuals of Asian descent as although it does play with stereotypes of Asian characters in martial arts films as it does so with a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness. I enjoyed the film but I do have to admit that these are issues which may upset some individuals.

Big-Trouble-in-Little-China-Screenshot-05

Visuals

The visual style of the film has a distinctly kitsch and over-the-top visual style to its direction. The action sequences are especially good examples with characters flying through the air swinging swords at each other or performing (somewhat dubious) martial arts moves with an equally exaggerated yell or grunt. Some of the costumes are also quite extravagant with Cattral’s, Pai’s, and Hong’s wardrobes especially earning a special mention. It all works in coming together to create a faithful spoof of 80s martial arts films which were popular at Big Trouble’s release and, for those who care to find them, the film is littered with homages to the body of work which inspires it.

The special effects which the film makes use of are a mixed bag but largely all in keeping with the film’s camp visual aesthetic. Largely I felt that the practical effects which the film employs for the various monstrous entities of Lo Pan’s lair were quite good with the floating eyeball monster being a particular stand out. The film special effects in regards to CGI were not nearly as impressive with fireballs and lightning leaping and arcing around the screen. It adds to the overall kitsch charm of the film but ultimately isn’t too impressive visually and I doubt any modern day movie goers are going to be in awe.

Big-Trouble-in-Little-China-Screenshot-04

Audio

The audio is an interesting mix of 80s synth tones, which are Carpenter’s trademark sound, with a strong Asian influence. The soundtrack was produced by Carpenter and certainly works to create a unique background for the film’s soundscape. Although I understand that Carpenter’s musical work can vary in quality, in this film it does the job it needs to of reinforcing the action and plot beats. It generally maintained a fast tempo to help keep the film engaging and give a sense of speed and brevity to the action unfolding onscreen. It’s competent work but it didn’t quite leave me with a memorable impression either way.

Big-Trouble-in-Little-China-Screenshot-01

Overall

I very much enjoyed this foray into the depths of San Francisco’s Chinatown with it’s eclectic cast and kitschy charm. The story was engaging and funny as the characters worked their way through the plot with their over-the-top, hammy writing. The visual direction was pretty awesome too, although a lot of the visual effects are quite dated by today’s standards. The soundtrack is solid but not something I would consider spectacular. Overall, it was a very enjoyable action comedy which was able to brighten the mood of even the grouchiest millennia-old, cursed sorcerer. An excellent start to the new season of In the House, kudos!

Z-MOVES AND UNDISCOVERED POKÉMON ANNOUNCED FOR POKÉMON SUN AND POKÉMON MOON!

Z-MOVES AND UNDISCOVERED POKÉMON ANNOUNCED FOR POKÉMON SUN AND POKÉMON MOON!

Fascinating new details about the Alola region and its unique characters also revealed

London, United Kingdom: August 1, 2016— The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo revealed powerful Z-Moves in addition to new characters and Pokémon that can be found in the highly anticipated Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon video games, available exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. These fascinating Alola region characters and Pokémon will appear in the latest generation of Pokémon video games that will launch in North America on November 18.

A new trailer that showcases the new Z-Moves and many amazing Pokémon can be found here: https://youtu.be/O3jjynIAJ20

Z-Moves
Z-Moves are a new element that has been introduced into the Pokémon battles inPokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Z-Moves are powerful moves that can only be used once during battle. The explosive force of a Z-Move is the result of both the Trainer and Pokémon releasing their full power together when their wishes resonate with each other. All Pokémon are capable of using Z-Moves in battle.

To use Z-Moves, two key items are required: a Z-Ring and a Z-Crystal. The Z-Ring fits on a Trainer’s arm, and Z-Crystals are set into it. If a Pokémon holds the same variety of Z-Crystal as its Trainer, the two will be able to resonate with one another.

Z-Ring
TOMY International will be releasing the Z-Ring for sale at participating retailers. When a player uses a Z-Move in Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon, their real-life Z-Ring will light up, vibrate, and play sounds to go along with the video and sounds in the game.

Alola Region and Trials
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon take place on an archipelago of tropical islands—four nature-filled islands and one man-made island. The Alola region is known as a resort area that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Alola is surrounded by the sea and has a diverse ecology made up of Pokémon that are native to the region along with Pokémon that have more recently arrived in Alola from other regions. In Alola, humans and Pokémon coexist in a very close relationship and a culture has developed that is different from that in other regions.

One aspect of the unique Alola culture is the island challenge, an adventurous rite that involves traveling through each of the four islands. This event helps young people grow into fine Pokémon Trainers. As the main character of Pokémon Sun andPokémon Moon, each player is destined to attempt this island challenge. To complete the island challenge, young trial-goers must overcome the trials on each of the four islands. These trials are not limited to battling with Pokémon. They take a variety of forms including finding items or completing tests of knowledge.

At the end of each trial, a mighty Pokémon known as a Totem Pokémon will be waiting. A Totem Pokémon is much larger than others of its species, and its body is enveloped in a special aura. When Totem Pokémon battle, they summon ally Pokémon to join them. With the support of these allies, the Totem Pokémon become more powerful. Pokémon other than Totem Pokémon also sometimes call on allies to aid them.

The final trial on each island is called the grand trial where Pokémon battle against the kahuna who leads that island. If a trial-goer succeeds in clearing this grand trial, they will be publicly recognized as having cleared all of the island’s trials and can move on to the next island.

Captains
Each trial has a captain whose role is to provide guidance to trial-goers. All of the captains are Trainers who undertook trials in their own island challenge several years earlier.

Lana is a captain who is an expert with Water-type Pokémon. She is dedicated to her family and is a reliable older sister who watches over her younger sisters. Captain Mallow is an expert with Grass-type Pokémon. She loves cooking, but it seems that sometimes her taste is a bit particular. Specializing in Electric-type Pokémon, Captain Sophocles is good with mechanics and has invented various machines. Captain Kiawe’s expertise is in Fire-type Pokémon, and together with his Marowak, he studies the traditional dances that have been passed down in the Alola region.

Kahunas
Each of Alola’s four islands has a leader, called the island kahuna, who governs the island. Kahunas are chosen by the Pokémon known as guardian deities, which are also found on each island. Hala is the kahuna of Melemele Island, where the main character has just moved to, and he is also the rival character Hau’s grandfather. Hala’s skill is renowned in the Alola region. He gives the player their first partner Pokémon and expects great things from them.

 Poké Ride
In the Alola region, certain Pokémon help people reach places that are not accessible using human strength alone. This practice of traveling on Ride Pokémon is typical of the culture of the Alola region, where humans and Pokémon are closely bound together. These Pokémon do not join the player’s team, but they can be called upon anytime for help.

The newly revealed Pokémon include:

Pokémon Adapted to the Alola Region
Some Pokémon have adapted to the distinctive microclimates of the Alola region and have taken on different forms than they have in other regions. These Pokémon are called regional variants. After taking root in the Alola region, they live like native Pokémon. These regional variant Pokémon can have different appearances and types, and their way of living can also differ from that of the forms previously known.

Name: Alolan Exeggutor
Type: Grass/Dragon
Unlike other Exeggutor, the Alolan Exeggutor has a fourth head—on its tail! This fourth head controls the tail independently and can take on opponents to the rear that can’t be reached by the main heads’ attacks.

Name: Alolan Vulpix
Type: Ice
It is said that Vulpix came to the Alola region together with humans, but the Fox Pokémon moved to the snowy mountain peaks to avoid the normal habitats of other Pokémon, and thus it ended up taking on this form.

Name: Alolan Ninetales
Type: Ice/Fairy
Alolan Ninetales is able to produce ice crystals from the fur that covers its body. It can use these ice crystals to block attacks, or it can form balls of ice, which it fires like bullets at opponents. These ice missiles have enough power to pulverize rock.

Name: Alolan Sandshrew
Type: Ice/Steel
Sandshrew have historically lived in desert areas, but the frequent eruptions of nearby volcanoes drove the them to abandon the desert and migrate to snowy mountains where they took on this form.

Name: Alolan Sandslash

Soak Up Some Sun With Winning Putt’s Summer Update

Soak Up Some Sun With Winning Putt’s Summer Update

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. announced a new content update for Winning Putt, their multiplayer golf title for PC. The Summer Patch greatly extends guild features by increasing guild’s level caps and adding new Guild rewards. In keeping with the season, the Summer Festival adds new event missions and visual updates to the free-to-play game.

Players who join forces with other golfers in a guild, can now collect guild ranking points. By competing against different guilds in ranked rounds, golfers are able to increase the amount of points earned and help their team climb up the guild ladder. Players should choose their opponents wisely though: while winning a round is great, losing a match means losing guild ranking points as well!

Guilds looking for new teammates can now invite more players, as the total number of possible members was increased from 30 to 40. In addition, the guild level cap has been pushed from 10 to 20.

The update also introduces the sunny season to Winning Putt. Summer decorations in the Square and surrounding areas set the right atmosphere for the newly added festival event: Depending on their mood, golfers choose between hot and cool missions. Each category contains a set of quests with unique items and gold up for grabs. Both mission chains refresh daily so players can tap the Festival’s full potential.

Lastly, the Summer Update brings more real-world details to the game. Based on the CryEngine3, Winning Putt already features realistic and high-quality graphics on PC. With the introduction of day and night cycles, players will now be able to find themselves at nighttime when joining the game’s Square.

Winning Putt is a free-to-play online golf experience where players build their golfing career solo or with friends. A variety of customizations are available to personalize the looks, clothing, and playstyles of the golfer; clubs can be outfitted with special enchantments for longer drives and accurate shots.
