Overview

Straight off the uncanny experience of watching The Thing, I went to the In the House screening of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Kubrick is considered a master of cinema and I have examined his work previously here as a part of the Niche 505 program which the folks at George St cinemas also screen. The Shining is considered a classic of the horror genre of which I have been (painfully) ignorant of for far too long. I ordered a shot of Bourbon to steel my soul before heading back into the theatre for the second screening of the In the House Halloween double feature.

Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn were the MCs for the evening and warmed the audience up quickly with some trivia about the film. An interesting aspect that they spoke about was that for the infamous scene where Jack Nicholson axes through a door, Shelley Duvall was not told that this would happen and that the fear we see her expressing is actually quite real. Before the screening, In the House also featured a small video wherein the director of the upcoming Australian film Red Dog: True Blue, Kriv Stenders, spoke a bit about his love of Kubrick and this film in particular.

Story

The story follows the Torrance family as they sign on as caretakers for an alpine hotel during the winter. Husband Jack (Jack Nicholson, wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and son Danny (Danny Lloyd) arrive at the hotel on closing day and are given a tour. It is revealed quite early that Danny has telepathic abilities and has a connection with a benevolent chef that works at the hotel (Scatman Crothers). As the months pass we see the family settle in to their surroundings with Wendy doing the chores, Jack attempting to write, and Danny playing around the hotel. As time progresses, we see the isolation start taking its toll on the family as Jack becomes increasingly erratic in his behaviour and prone to outbursts. At first, we assume that frustration with his lack of progress might be the cause for this behaviour but it becomes apparent that some other force may be at play which is driving the family to the brink.

Kubrick approaches the story in his own, measured, manner with lots of ambiguity for an audience to explore themselves. As the tension builds in the story, we ask whether the events are unfolding simply as a result of the pressures of isolation upon these characters or whether there are more supernatural forces at play. By the end of it, the film’s plot has resolved but the audience is left with more questions than answers to work upon your anxiety. What is it that drives the family to madness and what relation do they have to history of the hotel? The film does not say, and it is up to us to explore it ourselves.

Duvall’s performance, I feel, deserves praise especially. She essentially plays a character who is an abuse victim and I found her tenacious optimism to be quite sweet as a foil to Nicholson’s quite clear agitation. When Wendy finally breaks and strikes at Jack, I found Duvall’s performance of that moment to be harrowing alongside the infamous scene where Jack axes through a door. My one problem with her character is that she doesn’t appear to be written to have more of a personality beyond how she relates to her son and husband. I sympathised with her, but I wish her character had been given more than simply being either a caring mother/wife or a hapless damsel-in-distress.

Nicholson does a good turn as the much frustrated Jack and his slow descent into insanity is greatly disturbing. In the video before the film, Stenders mentioned a particular moment in the film where we finally see where Jack goes over the edge. Having seen this moment myself, it’s an amazing performance which Nicholson gives as his motionless face gives the audience everything it needs to know about what exactly he’s going through. My one criticism with his character is that Nicholson starts portraying aggression in the character way too early in the film’s timeline and I feel that the transition from amiable family man to maniac would have been far more conceptually terrifying than having an already belligerent man turn violent. Nonetheless, Nicholson has a face that was made for playing madmen.

Visuals

Kubrick’s genius with direction is pretty much on full display here as he takes his audience on an exploration of the film’s hotel. You get an acute sense of the layout of the hotel but despite shots of long hallways and cavernous ballrooms, you still get a sense of claustrophobia. Couple this with disturbing sequences of horror, vis-à-vis the elevator of blood sequence, and you get cinematography which is intensely unsettling. The Overlook Hotel is one of the creepiest fictional places I have ever encountered and Kubrick makes it so simply through how he shows it through the lens of the camera.

Audio

The soundtrack is, what I feel, makes this movie more than any aspect. On the surface, it seems like a fairly standard orchestral score but the genius is in how Kubrick deploys it. Throughout the film, there is a rising tension which is delivered to the audience by the film playing tense music during moments of complete banality. For instance, the music would build and swell as the camera slowly zoomed in to Nicholson’s character working at a desk with the musical climax being timed with him ripping the paper out of the typewriter. By constantly keeping us in a state of high alert in the film’s build up, it almost becomes a relief when things go off the chain and the axe-wielding maniac is on the loose. This film is pretty much a masterclass on how to score horror films.

the-shining-screenshot-05

Overall

The film has definitely earned its credit as one of the best horror films ever made. The story tells you just enough to keep you both uninformed and painfully aware of what exactly is going on. The cinematography is without a doubt, some of the creepiest I have ever seen. The scoring of the film is absolutely superb with Kubrick keeping his audience in a state of panic pretty much throughout. When I left the cinema, my friend and I had to sit down (again) as the intense anxiety the film had built and maintained throughout the screening had left us completely drained. This film was arduous for me to watch, but that is its appeal as a horror film and that I cannot fault. Despite the nits I have picked about some of the characterisation of the film’s protagonists, I have to say that The Shining is damn near perfect.

Kudos to Kubrick and kudos to In the House for screening this film!

A NEW ARRIVAL IN TOWN! FREE WELCOME amiibo UPDATE FOR ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW LEAF RELEASED

A NEW ARRIVAL IN TOWN! FREE WELCOME amiibo UPDATE FOR ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW LEAF RELEASED

Additional update to Nintendo 3DS game adds new area, amiibo functionality, items and other new features, now free to download

3rd November, 2016 – In a new Nintendo Direct video presentation, Nintendo threw a rustic party for Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo. The update, now available to download*, will also be included in a packaged version exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems available at retail on 24 November. This update to the classic Animal Crossing: New Leaf game adds the new RV campground area, which opens up a whole neighbourhood of fun new possibilities for all players. And those who own Animal Crossing amiibo figures or amiibo cards can have even more fun in their town.

All kinds of things are possible with amiibo! Depending on which one of the 16 Animal Crossing amiibo figures or the hundreds of Animal Crossing amiibo cards is scanned**, players can invite visitors to the new RV campground area, get new items, take photos with their animal friends using the amiibo Camera function, and some might even move in to town! To view the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety, make yourself at home and visit http://www2.nintendo.com.au/nintendodirect where K.K. Slider and Harvey will introduce all the new features.

While many of the new features introduced in the Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo update use amiibo, there are some that don’t require amiibo at all. This makes the update perfect for all players, regardless of how many cool amiibo they own. Here’s a list of the new features discussed during the Nintendo Direct:

Work with amiibo!

  • Wisp’s Wishes: By finding the magic lamp in the main game, players will unlock amiibo functionality. Once acquired, the lamp can be used once a day to summon the ghostly Wisp. Simply tap an amiibo and invite that respective amiibo character to your town, or receive a daily item. Want to live in a town full of ducks? Or cows? By using specific amiibo, that wish can come true!
  • New amiibo Cards: Launching on 10 November, players can pick up 50 new Animal Crossing amiibo cards. On the same day, the Sanrio Collaboration Pack will be available via the Official Nintendo AU/NZ eBay Store. All these cards not only include cool new villagers, but also their RVs as well! And speaking of those RVs…
  • New RV campground: After updating the game, players will notice a new area in their town. This new campground offers different interactions with special villagers and new shopping opportunities, as well as Harvey, a hilarious new character that will assist with all campground needs. By tapping a certain amiibo figure or card, that character will show up in their stylish custom RV. This even applies to some non-Animal Crossing amiibo like the Inklings from Splatoon and Wolf Link!
  • More to Play!: By finding a Wii U item or New Nintendo 3DS XL / New Nintendo 3DS item in an RV at the campground, players can unlock two new games and purchase them with MEOW Coupons. The Wii U console unlocks the Desert Island Escape game, while Animal Crossing Puzzle League can be accessed with the New Nintendo 3DS XL / New Nintendo 3DS item. The Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS items can be obtained via fortune cookies at the Nooklings’ shop, but it’s much easier to obtain these items by scanning any of the 16 Animal Crossing amiibo figures. Certain Animal Crossing amiibo figures and cards can also be used while playing these new games.

No amiibo needed!

  • MEOW Coupons: By earning new MEOW (Mutual Exchange of Wealth) coupons players can get unique in-game items at the RV campground or from visiting animal friends. To earn these coupons, players must complete new Town Initiatives, like pulling a set amount of weeds or gathering certain seashells.
  • Say Cheese!: With the new amiibo Camera mode, you can take the coolest in-game selfies ever. By gathering your favourite villagers, you can snap a photo and save it to view whenever you like. You can even share with friends using the 3DS Image Share tool. No amiibo are needed for this mode, but by tapping an amiibo card you can take photos of any animal friends who don’t live in your town!
  • What Do you Do With a New Storeroom?: Store things, of course! In Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo, players can purchase a new secret storeroom for their house at Nook’s Homes. The secret storeroom can be accessed from anywhere in the house and stores tons of collectibles. Maybe it can even be used to hide a dusty old treasure map in there. Isn’t that where all dusty old treasure maps are stored?
  • Decorating Is Easier Than Ever!: Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo lets players customise their homes by moving around their furniture and items using the touch screen. Making setting up a perfectly styled room easier than ever.
  • Happy Home, Happy Transfer: Players with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designersave data on their Nintendo 3DS system, can transfer it to purchase giant furniture in Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo. This new furniture is huge and will definitely make an impression in any home!

*To download the update, players just connect their Nintendo 3DS family system to the internet and start the game. A notification will appear, prompting to download the update.

**Using the NFC functionality on New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, or by using the NFC Reader/Writer accessory for Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 2DS, and Nintendo 3DS XL systems.

Diablo 3 Expansion? Diablo 4? A BlizzCon 2016 Rumour Round Up

diablo-concept-art-01

With BlizzCon kicking off this Friday and celebrations for Diablo’s 20th anniversary on the schedule, rumours have been flying like crazy. Here’s a round up of the current popular announcements we could be expecting.

Diablo 2 HD

This one popular rumour was busted back in September by PC Gamer after a website with a countdown popped up. Blizzard has denied all relations to the site, but that doesn’t mean the hope for an HD remake of Diablo 2 is gone. It’s just likely that it won’t be announced at BlizzCon.

New Diablo 3 Expansion

This rumour has gained traction in the last 48 hours after some concept art with the word “necromancer” in the file name popped up. The image depicts the popular Diablo 2 class with male and female variants of the class, stoking the rumours that a new expansion is coming. I personally don’t see this happening as the original Diablo 3 is four years old and Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is two years old. However, given Blizzard’s habit of putting many years between new titles in a franchise and its decision to spend five years to release all three Starcraft II titles, a new Diablo 3 expansion could still happen.

Diablo 4

Out of all the Diablo related rumours, I probably expect this one to be the most likely. It’s the 20th anniversary for the series, Blizzard has been hiring new staff for the franchise, and they’ve been teasing a major Diablo related announcement at BlizzCon this year. What would be more fitting for the 20th anniversary than to announce the latest title? The only concern I have for the franchise is who else is left to kill? After all, we are quickly running out of evils and Blizzard has already opened up angels as fair game with Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.

Sombra

Good grief, Charlie Brown! I would not consider this so much as a rumour as a practical given considering the Overwatch community has been dragged through an incredibly long ARG hinting to Sombra’s release. This ARG has dragged so long that Ana was released in the mean time and members of the Overwatch subreddit are about to riot. Knowing Blizzard’s obsession with polish, it is extremely likely that Sombra was meant to launch a lot sooner but ran into serious balance issues, thus causing the ARG to be extended far too long. Some art popped up in the Blizzard store depicting a high tech girl looking a lot like some art that looks an awful lot like the Sombra concept art that appeared a while ago. If Sombra is unveiled at BlizzCon, I suspect that she should be released on the PTRs shortlyafter the announcement.

The Hayne Plane in training for space combat at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Academy

The Hayne Plane in training for space combat at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Academy

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches November 4, 2016

2 November, 2016 – Ahead of the launch of Call of Duty®: Infinite Warfare on 4 November, avid Call of Duty® fan and NRL superstar, Jarryd Hayne attended a special training session at the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Academy, hosted by the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS). Hayne was joined by Australia’s leading professional Call of Duty esports team, Mindfreak; together they were pushed to the limit through a series of physical and mental challenges at the national high performance center and Olympic training facility.

The Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Academy was developed to enhance the skills of local esports professionals. Participants endured a series of intense trials:

  • The performance stressor test used a light board to measure the participants’ reaction times and hand-eye co-ordination, an exercise that was repeated after a physical drill, to demonstrate the effects of fatigue.
  • To combat the negative impact of stress, participants were placed in an extreme stress environment underwater, allowing NSWIS’s performance psychologist to teach them stress management strategies to quieten the mind and optimise performance.
  • In the Mindroom they were taught how to improve attentional skills by tracking multiple moving objects in a 3D field.

In a first for the franchise, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare introduces an all-new story set beyond Earth’s atmosphere. To further help Hayne with his training before he plays the game, he recently visited the Spaceflight Academy, Australia’s first astronaut test center, where he took part in a one-of-a-kind space training simulation. Jarryd strapped himself in to the Multi-Axis Trainer (MAT), which simulated the disorientation that you would feel during a tumble spin on reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, as well as scaling a Zero-G Gravity Wall, which emulates the feeling of weightlessness in space and gameplay featured in Infinite Warfare.

Hayne said, “It was unreal to witness the amount of preparation that is needed to go into space at the Spaceflight Academy and to see how my own sports training applies within the esports environment at NSWIS. The highlight was definitely hanging out with Australia’s best Call of Duty players and picking their brains on the game to improve mine. I’m ready and looking forward to the launch of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on November 4.”

Activision’s Call of Duty franchise is a major player in the esports world, with the Call of Duty World League in full swing and Call of Duty World League Championship taking place annually.

Mindfreak’s team captain, Mitchell Mader said, “When we compete in the Call of Duty World League Championship, we come head-to-head with fierce international teams who we play for up to twelve hours at a time.  The skills we learnt at the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Academy will be extremely beneficial in these moments of high pressure.”

“Mindfreak team is really excited about the release of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which puts us back on a level playing field as all professional teams worldwide learn the intricacies of the new game.”

Dr. Mike Martin, Lead Performance Psychologist, NSWIS said, “With any elite level performance, comes the need for top tier training and preparation, no matter the discipline. Our team of leading experts in physiology, psychology and high performance developed a training program that targeted tactical awareness, superior mental performance under pressure and improved decision making and targeting accuracy. We look forward to seeing how MindFreak benefit from what we’ve taught them. Hopefully it gives them a great start heading into major competitions.”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be available for PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and PC on Steam starting November 4th.
