New Fall Update for Xbox One Available for Everyone Today

New Fall Update for Xbox One Available for Everyone Today

It’s been a busy and exciting summer for everyone at Team Xbox. Back in August we gave you a first look at the fall update for Xbox One, and we showed off the new Home, Guide and Community tabs. Since then, we’ve been working with Xbox Insiders to gather feedback, test and refine new features that we’re releasing worldwide starting today. As gamers, we like to play and watch content the way we want, with the people we want. With this update, our fans asked for more personalization options and we’ve put more control in their hands. Here’s a rundown of the new features.

You can personalise your “Home” more than ever before: You can…

  • Make Home uniquely yours. Add your favourite games, friends, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass, and more directly to your Home screen with a new concept that we call blocks. Once you’ve added blocks, you can remove or change the order of the blocks as you see fit.
  • Have up to 40 pins! All these pins will appear in the Pin block on Home, as well as the Pins flyout in the new Guide!
  • Easily discover new things, such as friend activities, leaderboards, LFG posts, tips, quick links to Game Hubs, across both your console and Xbox Live at the top of Home.
  • Choose dark, light, or high-contrast theme option in Settings.

You’ll experience a fast, powerful and convenient Guide:

  • It’s now faster and easier to move left and right through horizontal tabs with the left thumb stick or bumpers.
  • When you bring up Guide while in an active party or broadcast, Guide will automatically open the party or broadcast section by default for faster access to controls.
  • New “Friends in games” flyout informs you of friends playing the same game.
  • Game invites will show up in the Multiplayer tab of the Guide.
  • The new Tournaments section in the Multiplayer tab of the Guide provides a quick portal into the official and community tournaments that you’ve joined. Enjoy more Xbox Arena tournament options with the addition of new titles.

Don’t worry about missing any actions when you step away from your console:

  • With the enhanced notification system, when your Xbox One is idle, time-sensitive activities and status are visible from far away.
  • The screen-dimming functionality has also been updated to better prevent screen ghosting, both when the screen is dimmed and when it’s showing notification snapshots of what’s happening on Xbox Live.
  • The newly redesigned Game Hub Welcome tab now features a summary of all the great content around the game on one page.
  • Profiles now enable faster access to recent activity. You can now easily manage who sees your activity feed content through the “Others can see your activity feed” privacy setting.
  • See more content at a glance with new Community feed, and view screenshots and game clips in an immersive, full-screen view.

Get a head start on Xbox One X (Launch Day Nov 7): Your console setup experience will be quicker for both new users and upgraders. There are new options to help save time when moving from one Xbox One to another (including Xbox One X), so you can get back to playing faster.

  • Transfer your games to an external drive so you can connect it to your new console and play immediately. Just unplug the drive from your current console, plug it in to your new one, and you’re ready to go.
  • Existing Xbox One owners can back up their games and console settings to an external drive so that they’re ready to be applied to the new console during setup.
  • Copy your games and apps over your home network from one console to another via network transfer.
  • Bulk transfer will allow you to select and transfer as many games as you want all at once.
  • You’ll be able to download 4K content for some games ahead of time to your Xbox One or Xbox One S, so that you’re ready to transfer Xbox One X Enhanced games to your new console on day one.
  • You can easily discover Xbox One X Enhancedtitles in the Store, and developers can optimize game delivery by making sure that 4K assets are installed only for Xbox One X.
  • You’ll be able to sort and filter your Installed and Ready to Install games library to find Xbox One X Enhanced titles.

Discover and Create Engaging Content:

  • The Mixer tab on the dashboard will now display broadcast previews so you can see what’s going on in popular streams before you join them.
  • If your bandwidth supports a 1080p broadcast, we will upgrade it automatically for your Xbox One family of devices.
  • The Broadcast & Capture tab in Guide is also now more deeply integrated with Mixer. Once you start a Broadcast, a new flyout will appear that includes your profile stats.
  • You can also use a USB webcam to broadcast yourself alongside your gameplay on Mixer, or to have a 1:1 or group video chat with friends using Skype.
  • GameDVR will now be able to capture up to 4K/HDR screenshots and game clips on Xbox One X, and you’ll be able to capture content directly to an external hard drive.

Other big features include…

  • You can get personalized tips & help, smart notifications, community tips, & troubleshooting through the new Xbox Assist App.
  • You can also change your console language to select right-to-left languages – Arabic & Hebrew– in the Xbox Settings menu.
  • You will also see a new Microsoft Store logo and name in the Xbox dashboard, providing you with a simpler experience when you download and buy the latest products and content from Microsoft and its partners, including hardware, games, entertainment, apps and more.

It’s been an incredible journey for the entire team at Xbox as we worked to bring you this update. Thanks as always to our fans and Xbox Insiders for the valuable feedback. Be sure to keep letting us know what you think at Xbox feedback. We’ll have even more great features coming very soon! See you on Xbox Live.

ELEX Review

ELEX

Developer: Piranha Bytes
Publisher: THQ Nordic
FormatPC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 17 Oct 2017
Price: $49.99USD – Available Here

Overview

ELEX starts off with an interesting setting, mixing the old and new. Medieval and technological. Magic and raw steel. Already a ticket to success if that would be all that it takes for a decent RPG game. So let’s delve deeper to see if the setting lives up to my imagination as well as the other elements.

Story

Enter the world of Magelan, a peaceful realm up until the point when one giant meteor crashed and killed all the dinosa-….wait, that’s not it. No dinosaurs to exterminate in Magelan, but it did create some significant damage to everyone and anything in it. It also brought something with it. ELEX (omg that’s the name of the game!). ELEX is a material that, depending on who uses it, can power machines, give the gift of magic or do some nasty things to you if you use it too much. Everything comes with a price. Speaking of who uses it, there are three main factions you’ll encounter (and sometimes fight against) in Magelan. Berserkers, Outlaws and Clerics. Then there’s also the big baddies known as Albs. Being devoted too much to this space crack known as ELEX, it left Albs emotionless and always in search to find and consume more of it. They manage to exercise some self-control since constant abuse of it would lead you to slowly turning into a blueish brain-dead zombie. You play as Jax, one of the members of Albs, who is left stranded in the wild by them after failing his last mission. While you’re lying down unconscious, someone managed to steal all your belongings (including that fancy Albs armor) but on the positive note, during that sleepy time you’re way less dependant on ELEX now. So after waking up, it’s time to find some basic equipment, get yourself familiar with everyone and everything in Magalan, gather some companions and bring more havoc into the already ravaged world.

Gameplay

Combat in ELEX is a classic example of something starting nice but leaving much to be desired. Basic fighting mechanics consists of parrying your opponents, rolling out of their reach and combining basic & heavy combo attacks for good damage. That all sounds good if it weren’t for the clankiest combat in an RPG that I’ve played lately. Enemies will sometimes hit you even when it seems you’re out of reach so the best approach is to just circle around them till they use up their stamina (aka Dark Souls tactic) and counter with your combos. Regardless what kind of skills you choose to invest in, the combat always feel like it could be a bit faster. Or maybe everyone in the game is going through major ELEX withdrawals so they don’t feel fighting anymore, not to mention living. At least there is an unusual addition to your character having a jetpack so you can always just fly away from those sluggish fights (and trust me, pretty soon you will want to). Jetpack is a neat little gadget that helps you ignore the fall damage if you activate it just before the fall and cut down going down the mountain(s) significantly. Also, there is no danger in engaging with too many enemies for that sweet exp, since most of the big chunks of experience will come to you via solving quests.

Visuals

One of the things that devs of ELEX said is that the game has” completely seamless open world experience without borders and loading zones for the ultimate exploration experience”. And I have to say, it does feel great standing on top of the mountain and looking at some tiny dot in the distance (which is also a mountain), knowing that you can always walk/sprint/jetpack over it if you feel like it. The world itself feels incredibly alive, with all sorts of characters talking with each other as you pass by, walking around and doing their everyday tasks. Area design, as well the contrast between the territories of Berserkers, Clerics and Outlaws is really impressive. Character models, including Jax, are mostly well done. I say mostly since some of the male characters you meet early in the game, especially Duras, looks like they have been injected with an unhealthy amount of botox in their faces (but then again, is there even such thing as a healthy amount of botox?).

Audio

Voice acting in ELEX is exceptional, especially once you realize how many talking characters you can converse with and every voice feels unique. Never a moment of “hm, this NPC #31314 sounds awfully familiar like that NPC #88682 from 20 minutes ago”. The soundtrack is also top notch and it really compliments the incredibly rich world of Magalan. There are short moments where it gets a bit loud while you’re talking with someone which is not so bad if you pretend that the current conversation is happening during the nearby music festival.

Overall

ELEX is one of those games that did so many things right and one not so right. I suppose it wouldn’t be a problem much if it wasn’t an element that means a lot to me. The gameplay.  The world, the soundtrack, the exploration….everything is there up to standards except the clunky combat. If you play your cards right, most of that can be bypassed just by focusing on getting experience from quests so at least the fighting won’t be as slow if you reach the point where everyone can die in 2-3 hits from you. The question is, will you have the patience to get there? Despite that shortcoming, I’m still in love with the game. It feels nice playing and seeing how you’re always left to your own devices, with the freedom to go anywhere as you please. It’s been a lot since I played in a world that felt so alive and vibrant as Magalan. I’m hoping that some future patches can polish the combat aspect a bit or make it enjoyable in some other way, cause it’s anything but that right now.

In November, the Roman Centurion and Horus packs will launch. They will introduce new outfits, weapons, shields, and mounts. In January, the first story DLC “The Hidden Ones” will launch. Video Review

Overview

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates is an RPG set in an alternate version of New York City in the 1900s. The rising oceans has flooded the cities, shattering them into a series of small city-states built on top of the skyscrapers that are above sea level. The situation becomes dire when the pipes that bring fresh water into New York City run dry. In this old-school style RPG, players are sent on an epic journey to save the city by bringing back the water to a parched city.

Story

The world of Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates is a unique setting mixing modern day themes of environmental change with an alternate history of early 1900s New York City. The world is very well crafted. The city-states of New York City have their own unique cultures that trace their roots to the many groups of people that make up the city, from the NYPD officers that once patrolled the streets before the flood to the Italian-American Mafia families battling each other on the roof tops. The game’s plot pales in comparison to the well-crafted world that it is set in. While the dialogue is decent, the plot itself tends to be dull due to the simple and straight forward nature of the quests. The options for character building through dialogue choices is rather thin and uninspired.

Gameplay

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates is a pretty bare bones RPG. Players start the game with an option between four pre-made characters with different play styles. Each character can equip up to two weapons and a belt of items to be used in combat. Characters don’t have any active skills beyond the items in their belt. The character system is dull. The skills are basic twists on character attributes. The perks are mostly focused on improving weapon use or increasing certain skills and attributes. There is very little room for serious min/maxing.

Combat is in real-time, with the option for players to pause the game. Orders can only be issued during the pause menu. It wouldn’t be too bad if the game did not require an incredible amount of micromanaging. Upon killing an enemy, characters do not immediately target the next available enemy, even if they are under attack. Instead, they will happily stand still until they either die or are issued a new command. The command system is equally silly, as health items are not prioritized properly. Players must clear a character’s queue and then issue the command to heal. It’s bulky, awkward, and completely unnecessary.

Outside of the terrible command system, Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates has a decent tactical combat system. The game uses an excellent cover system that recognizes partial cover and line of sight. Status effects from items are extremely potent and can easily turn the tide of battle.

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates’ user experience is a mess. Character management is extremely poor. While the character sheets are serviceable, the level up menus are uninformative and unhelpful. Each level will reward characters with a skill point, with perks being rewarded every few levels. The perks get tool-tips that carry some information on its effects, but the skill points do not. Players must find out exactly what skill does in the main character sheet before entering the level up screen. The tool-tips are not always helpful, either. I encountered perks that had no correlation to any visible stat or skill in the character screen, such as the perk Dexterity that was supposed to raise the invisible stat of the same name by three.

Inventory management is a clunky affair. Items go into the active character’s inventory, which can be pulled up along side the character sheet. Ammunition and health items need to be spread between characters, but Empyre offers some really awkward solutions. Items can be dragged and dropped onto character portraits to move them. I was stuck experimenting to figure out how to split stacks of items. To get to the split stacks menu, the game awkwardly requires players to hold the alt key while dragging an item to another character. It doesn’t seem like the game supports splitting stacks within character’s inventory. There is a menu for moving items around characters is available, but it does not show what is currently equipped for each character. Being able to see what items are equipped on each character in this menu would make swapping around weapons and items between characters a lot quicker.

The dialogue UI is way too scattered. Since there is no voice acting, the developers opted to better establish the speaker of each line by having the lines appear in a text box next to the character portrait. The result is the eyes needing to dart to the top left side of screen to view the player characters dialogue and then move to the middle right side of the screen to read the response from the NPC. If the game requires players to make a decision during dialogue, the eyes must then travel to the bottom edge of the screen. There is a good reason why a large text box with changing character portraits have been a mainstay of RPG games: because it works. It’s a minor, but annoying hassle to have to bounce around the screen to read dialogue because the developers opted to reinvent the wheel by creating a square.

The levels design is uninspired. For the most part, levels are completely linear in nature with the odd side quest thrown in occasionally. There is very little to encourage players to wander the side streets. Tidbits of lore or hidden loot is few and far between.

The game is lacking a bit of final polish. The character pathing is a little off, so characters will sometimes get caught running into walls or talking to NPCs through walls. Additionally, hitting space to forward a dialogue sometimes causes the game to automatically select the first option when players are given dialogue choices. There also seems to be many glitched chests. I encountered several chests that were highlighted as interactive objects, but no clear way to open them. Thankfully, the saving grace for Empyre’s item system is the fact players can loot all unclaimed items on the map before leaving the level, which gets around the glitched chests or missed loot.

Visuals

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates’ graphics is a bit of a dull with a few bright spots. The art style is a 1900s look through black ink illustrations on yellowed paper and period-style 3D graphics. The 2D material is fantastic. The artists do a wonderful job with the illustrations, but the amount of blank character portraits is disappointing. It seems like only the major characters have a portrait, while minor NPCs will have to settle for a blank silhouette. The 3D graphics, on the other hand, are pretty lack lustre. The animations look awkward and unnatural. There are very few animations in the game. For example, there is only one holstering animation, so the end of combat tends to look like an entire squad of clones are moving at the same time.

Audio

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates has a mediocre audio experience. The soundtrack is a mix of retro-inspired tunes from the early decades of the 20th century. There are some decent songs, but the soundtrack is extremely limited. It already feels like the player is listening to the same handful of tracks after an hour of play. The sound effects are a bit of a mixed bag. Some are decent, while others feel cheap and out of place.

Overall

Empyre: Lord of the Sea Gates boasts a lovely world and not much else. The user experience is extremely rough and poorly thought out. The combat system is hamstrung by the need for micromanagement, and the level design is uninspired. The audio/visual presentation is mediocre at best, with the lone bright spot being the 2D artwork. Unless you are embarking on a gotta play ‘em all quest for RPGs, it’s probably a safe bet to skip out on Empyre.

Overview

Very few franchises can say that they have managed to last for over twenty years, especially in the manga world and of these franchises even fewer can say that they’ve managed to gather such a massive number of licensed video games as One Piece. Since its creation back in 1997 the series has had games appear on every manner of console and handheld device and now the first title has arrived on the Switch, though you may have already played it before if you’re a die-hard fan of the series. After first arriving on the Wii U and 3DS a few years ago, One Piece: Unlimited World Red – Deluxe Edition has made its way to the Switch but is it still worthy of your time?

Story

It is worth noting that unless you’re highly familiar with the One Piece series, up to the point of at least being into the post-time skip era of the series, that you will likely be coming across plenty of references and material that will go completely unexplained. Outside of brand new characters the game does little to explain the various abilities and relationships of the characters so be prepared for that if you’re jumping in without being a fan of the series.

For everyone else though, it is highly interesting to see that rather than trying to adapt an already well-trodden storyline One Piece: Unlimited World Red – Deluxe Edition works more as the many filler arcs that take place between the larger story events in the series. The story begins with Luffy and the rest of the crew bringing a newfound friend named Pato back to the Island of Promises where the village of Transtown is located. Once there Luffy ventures out to explore the town while the rest of the gang splits up only for them to be whisked away to an unknown location, leaving Luffy with only Pato by his side.

Luffy is quick in venturing out to rescue his missing crew only to find that they have been taken by a pirate known only as Red. To make matters worse, on his journey to rescue his friends a number f familiar places and familiar enemies arise once again to face off against Luffy and the crew, something that longtime fans of the series will certainly appreciate since many of these characters haven’t been seen in years.

The storyline works great as a video game as it feels like one of the best filler arcs that a fan could ask for by giving players plenty of unique twists and turns as they battle familiar faces and travel through new areas along the way. As one would expect with standard filler the end result doesn’t play much of a role in the long run of the storyline but it does create a satisfying storyline for shonen fans to follow.

Gameplay

For the most part the city of Transtown serves as the game’s main hub area as that is the location where players will be able to use the various items that they gather in levels to help upgrade the town by building a pharmacy, restaurants, and more in an effort to unlock additional content that can help you in your main journey. This does make for a bit of a grinding feel from time to time but this isn’t a major issue for the most part thanks to the colorful appeal of the village.

The actual levels that you will be playing through serve as mostly straightforward affairs in self-contained areas where the player will need to face off against various groups of enemies, smash objects to get loot and other resources to use on the town, and finally face off against an, almost always, memorable boss that requires certain strategies to beat. These boss battles end up being the biggest highlight for most of these levels as their unique attacks, as well as an almost always dreadful camera, make them quite challenging to beat.

The combat system for Unlimited World Red is easy to understand for the most part as the combo system makes use of a set of light and heavy attacks as well as special attacks that are unique to each character, Luffy for example has plenty of long range attacks while Nami makes use of her staff and weather abilities to deal damage, and so on with each character being given some time to shine. In fact, players even have the ability to unleash team attacks at the expense of their SP meters but this is something that rarely is an issue as the meter recharges quite quickly.

Despite having a fairly easy to learn combat system the actual result is a bit disappointing this is mostly due to the fact that the combo strings that are unique to each character quickly become mundane as you fight through what is, generally, an easy to beat group of mob type enemies before battling on to the next area. Combine this with a generous counter timer and most standard battles will be a breeze although you’d almost wish they lasted longer as many of these levels are scarcely populated with enemies popping up only here and there and even destructible objects being kept to a minimum, something that likely is carried over from the game’s origins as a handheld title.

Players will also have the ability to make use of a “strong word” system that allows for various stat boosts and skills to be tied to catch phrases that can be equipped which is a bit unique if they are thought of as simple pieces of equipment and little else. Also thanks to the fact that this is the “Deluxe Edition” of the game it comes with all of the DLC that was released for the original game but for the most part this just ends up as extra costumes for the cast, most of which are based off of movie appearances, so don’t expect too much in this regard.

One thing that does work quite well in regards to One Piece: Unlimited World Red – Deluxe Edition being released on the Switch is the ease of being able to play with two players. The game makes an easy adjustment to being able to be played with a single Joycon, meaning that setting the console in its docking station and playing with a friend in split screen co-op is quick and painless, though if you try to do this on a table-top type of setting then you’ll likely be struggling with the smaller screen size being split between the two characters.

Visuals & Audio

Perhaps thanks to the game’s anime aesthetic, the title has managed to make the upgrade to the Switch flawlessly. The character designs, even with the lackluster bonus costumes, are perfect matches to their anime counterparts and their special moves are copied perfectly here. The enemy variety is a bit disappointing; as is the level design, but the bosses really continue to shine through here both in design and combat quality.

It is worth noting that Bandai Namco has only included the original Japanese voice acting for this game though that should be just fine for longtime fans of the series as all of the original voice actors sound like they have retained their roles here. The soundtrack also works quite well here with plenty of catchy tunes and fitting themes matched with the various areas players will be exploring.

Overall

For the most part One Piece: Unlimited World Red – Deluxe Edition makes the transition to the Switch without issue as the combat remains enjoyable, if a bit stale, and varied with the multiple characters to choose from and delightful bosses to face off against. The bonuses included in the deluxe version may not be worth picking up the game a second time for if you’ve played it once but are nice inclusions for new players looking for a decent brawler with a satisfying story on the Switch.
