Xbox Game Pass Has a Remarkable First Year Creating New Opportunities for Gamers and Developers

Xbox Game Pass Has a Remarkable First Year Creating New Opportunities for Gamers and Developers

by Ashley Speicher, Head of Engineering, Xbox Game Pass

It’s been one year since we launched Xbox Game Pass, a monthly membership built for gamers. From the very outset, our goal with Xbox Game Pass has been to provide you with more value and choice by delivering a diverse library of games reflective of the long history of Xbox, as well as create new opportunities for our industry partners that make a positive impact. Thanks to you, this last year has been remarkable – we’ve been humbled by your enthusiasm and support.

Over the last year, we’ve achieved several important milestones based on feedback from our fans. We heard from around the world that you wanted Xbox Game Pass, so we expanded and now support 40 markets across the globe.

You also told us your number one must-have feature was to have more AAA blockbuster titles available. In response, we announced in January that going forward, we plan to release all new Xbox games from Microsoft Studios into Xbox Game Pass the same day as their global launch, including new iterations of future unannounced games from some of our biggest franchises such as Halo, Forza and Gears of War.

So, how is Game Pass creating new opportunities for both gamers and developers? In its first year, Xbox Game Pass has proven to be great for both gamers and game developers as an additive means to drive discovery and engagement of games. The freedom to explore and play more great games is changing gaming habits in incredibly positive ways.

After joining Xbox Game Pass, Game Pass members are playing more games than ever before — not only games in the Game Pass catalogue, but also other Xbox games outside the catalogue. As a result, we’re seeing more active players for games across the board, which is having a notable positive impact for our publishers and developers, including increased sales for games in Xbox Game Pass.

Xbox Game Pass is also creating bigger player communities, more buzz and excitement, and longer lifespan for games that enables our partners to drive more business opportunity. For example, in March, Sea of Thieves marked the first Xbox title to release into Xbox Game Pass timed with its global release, which contributed to a thriving Sea of Thieves community that saw more than 2 million players within its first week of release.

And building on this momentum, in May, we made the second Xbox exclusive title from Microsoft Studios available to Xbox Game Pass members with the release of State of Decay 2 on May 22. The response from our community has been extremely positive, contributing to the over one million players across the globe playing and creating their own zombie survival story.

In addition to our first-party portfolio, we’ve continued to add a variety of new titles for you to explore and enjoy every month, so you always have something new to play. We’ve seen an incredible community response to newer titles in the catalogue such as Pro Evolution Soccer 18, theHunter: Call of the Wild and Clustertruck and can’t wait to bring you more popular titles in the year ahead.

It’s also been exciting to see titles in Xbox Game Pass experience revived gaming communities across a variety of genres and franchises. Games in Xbox Game Pass have a longer tail of engagement, sustain their community and help developers connect with new audiences than before.

What’s more, those same community members often go on to then try the next major release from those franchises thanks to being introduced to new genres and content they may not have otherwise explored, simply by having unlimited access through the Xbox Game Pass catalogue.

We have a long-term commitment and belief in making subscriptions a model that benefits gamers with more choice and game creators with more opportunity. We will continue to invest in this space. We look forward to further evolving Xbox Game Pass by bringing even more great games in the year ahead to continue to meet the needs of gamers and game developers.

Omensight Review

Omensight

Developer: Spearhead Games
Publisher: Spearhead Games
Platform: PlayStation 4, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 15 May 2018
Price: $19.99 USD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Omensight is the spiritual successor to Stories: The Path of Destinies. Omensight is an action RPG and murder mystery set in the last day before the end of the world. The Harbinger has been sent to Urralia to solve the murder of the Godless-Priestess Vera in hopes of averting the apocalypse. To find the culprit, the Harbinger can rewind time to start the day over again with new information gleaned from the previous attempt.

Story

Urralia is in the midst of a bloody civil war as the Rodentians rebel under the merciless grasp of the Imperial Empire led by Emperor Indrik. The murder of the Godless-Priestess triggers the coming of the god Voden who consumes the world. To stop Voden, the Harbinger is sent to find the Godless-Priestess’ soul and find her murderer.

Contrary to Omensight’s cartoonish looks, the game’s plot is a mature and grim story where there are few truly evil characters. I found the dialogue and story to be well written. The idea of replaying the same day over and over ala Groundhog Day sounds a bit repetitive, but the writers manage things admirably by having three visions called omensights that can be bestowed upon the game’s four main NPCs. Each vision will trigger very different reactions, sending players to different levels and revealing clues about the murder and details about the characters themselves. For those interested in diving deeper into each character’s backstories, memories can be collected in the levels which unlock a short text passage about important points in each character’s life.

The game keeps track of the murder mystery clues by highlighting important facts in bright green text and keeping the clues organized in a separate screen. Players can opt for the true detective mode that will force them to figure it out themselves. I found the clues to be rather obvious, so players are not so much solving a murder for themselves but tagging along for the ride.

Gameplay

Omensight is an action RPG with combat reminiscent of the Batman Arkham series and a simple progression system. The Harbinger is capable of a light and heavy attack that can be chained into combos of three. Players will need to hit the dodge button in response to exclamation marks above enemy heads to avoid being hit. I found the response window to be inconsistent. Easier monsters have such a large window that it is practically impossible to fail unless the enemy is too far off screen to see. On the other hand, the large shark mini-bosses have such a short window that it’s too challenging to be fun. As players level up, they will gain new skills and can spend amber to improve skill power, stats, and partners. The skills are generally helpful, but the skill to slow time is way overpowered when leveled up. With only a few second cooldown between the end of the first slow and the cast of the second, players can keep the bubble up almost infinitely and simply dodge or dash out of the way while the cooldown ticks down. Once in the slowing bubbles, all enemies and projectiles barely move, making combat trivial.

The level design is an ingenious use of resources. There are only four levels in the game, but each character will take different paths based on their goals. The enemies will also change depending on the character that accompanies the Harbinger. As players progress through the story, they will gain the power to unlock various seals in the four levels. It’s a bit disappointing as most seals hide a small room with bonus currency rather than anything of story value.

The developers handle Omensight’s repetitive nature well. Players are able to battle almost every important character in the game depending on their decisions, and violence is sometimes the right option to earn the trust of characters. In cases where players are faced with different choices at a critical moment, the game allows players to save time by skipping over previous content and return just before that moment upon replaying the day. My only complaint is that some clues can be permanently missed if the player moves onto the next act. Since there is no way to go back to a previous act right now, the only way to find the clue would be the play the game over again.

The game is lacking a bit in polish. I ran into several bugs that required a load from checkpoint. The most common one was NPC events needed to progress to the next area not triggering. The usual cause was straying a bit too far from the NPC when the action sequence is supposed to trigger.

Omensight’s controls are solid. The controller binding is similar to most action titles on the market. While the developers recommend a controller, I found the mouse and keyboard option to be perfectly usable.

The PC port is a bit barebones, but it’s not a huge issue due to Omensight’s simpler graphics. The game doesn’t offer much in the way of graphical customization options, only offering options for resolution, vsync, ant-aliasing, and a vague graphical quality setting. The keybinding options are straight forward and the menus work with the mouse.

Visuals

Omensight’s art style is cartoony with a dark twist. The character’s animal designs are excellent and are even worked into the lore. The animations are great, making the combat look visually smooth and stylish. Although the game only has four levels, I like how the levels become infected with the void over time, filling familiar areas with shadows and purple crystals.

Audio

The audio experience is very good. The sound effects are enjoyable. The soundtrack is an excellent mix of classic video game orchestral scores and some choral work. Ratika’s short song is cringe-inducing, but that’s an outlier in terms of the soundtrack. The voice acting is a mixed bag. It’s obvious the voice actors for the main characters are experienced top end talent, but the minor characters are quite poor. I also found NPCs scolded the players a little too often for exploring, which is odd considering the game actually rewards players with an explorer experience bonus.

Overall

Although the Omensight isn’t really a mystery adventure game, watching the mystery unfold is satisfying and entertaining. The audio/visual experience is very good. The gameplay is fun, but the combat can be tightened up and the bugs stomped out. I recommended Omensight for anyone who appreciates a solid action game that is paired with a good story.

Milanoir Review

Milanoir

Developer: Italo Games
Publisher: Good Shepherd Entertainment
FormatPlayStation 4Xbox OnePC (Reviewed), Nintendo Switch
Release Date: 31 May 2018
Price: $12.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

A good portion of my childhood was spent before the internet was a thing (yes, I’m that old!).  That way, most of my indoor past time as a kid went on watching cartoons and most importantly – a whole bunch of Italian Bud Spencer & Terence Hill movies. They still have a cult status in these parts of Balkan with their mix of action, comedy and spectacular fist fights. Now, why am I writing this and what does any of this have with my Milanoir review? Well, Bud Spencer & Terence Hill movies were the first thing I remember when I read the description of the game. “Inspired by the Italian crime flicks of the ’70s,  Milanoir is a pixel-packed action game set in the violent city of Milan”. So I went in expecting a nice cocktail of shootouts, fist fights and plenty of criminal activities. Let’s see what I actually found in the world of Milanoir.

Story

You play as Piero, a slick-haired mobster devoted to his crime syndicate. You spend some time doing the usual tasks that your job requires (murders, extortion, robberies…you know, classic stuff). Eventually, there is that one job where everything that could go wrong goes wrong. While taking down the rival mob boss you end up killing some innocents by mistake and someone even snitches you to the cops as a bonus. Hello, jail time! And this is where our game truly begins. After getting out of the prison, it’s time to wrap up some unfinished business and find the person who snitched on you. Also, murder them but that goes without saying.

Gameplay

Now we are on our way to exact revenge and some fine revenge that is. What is it that makes Milanoir so fun to play? A couple of things, notably plenty of cool shootouts and engaging “just one more try” gameplay. Most of the seven chapters of the game will ask you to kill a certain rival mob boss. Getting to them is not easy since there is always a small army of goons between the two of you. They vary in appearance and in the ways of dispatching you. You have your average pistol shooting goons, shotgun baddies, Molotov bombers and even some knife-wielding moms. Your standard weapon is a pistol and it usually takes 3-4 shots to kill an enemy. Moving, rolling and shooting at the same time is a smart way to go since you will almost always have to exchange bullets with more than 3 enemies at the same time. Later on, it gets a little easier by finding occasional Molotov and a revolver throughout a level. And my most favorite thing – traffic signs. Hm, that sounds a bit anticlimactic but let me explain. By shooting at a traffic sign while the enemy is near it, the bullet will ricochet off it to the enemy resulting in a smooth one hit kill. Pretty often you might get swarmed with enemies, make a wrong move during a boss shootout and it’s game over for you (resulting in a reload to the most recent checkpoint). Be warned, this is a game where you will die and try not to die a lot, just like in Hotline Miami. Sometimes you might be close to clear the room or take down the boss but there is one last bullet that might foil your plans. Just remember, practice makes perfect!

Visuals

Partnering with some great gameplay, the visual aspect is also on the same level. I get to read those standard press releases or game store pages saying how their game has the best pixel graphic style that is super detailed, visually rich or whatever the new buzzword is. And I just end up looking at some average indie pixel product. Thankfully, that’s not the case with Milanoir. It makes dying so often not so bad since I get to take a second look at some really detailed scenery. Everything is so visually rich (let’s make this a new PR buzzword) from boss shootouts and car chases that I feel bad I got to spend so little time in certain levels.

Audio

One portion of the Milanoir‘s store page description on Steam says tells me to “immerse myself in a groovy ’70s atmosphere!” While that is true and the game has some really groovy tracks there are some rather disappointing sections regarding the soundtrack. Certain parts of levels will have some undefined menacing instrumentals that took me out of the atmosphere. I expected some smooth noir jazz at least during the less intense parts of the game. Good news is that during those action-packed parts, the soundtrack is spot on and does a great job of complimenting the pixelated carnage.

Overall

It’s really hard to find any major flaw in Milanoir. There are a couple of tiny things preventing this great game ascending to a damn good game but it’s nothing serious enough to bring down the overall atmosphere. Milanoir is a well-rounded game perfect to scratch that Hotline Miami itch but most importantly, strong enough to stand on its own.
