Horror co-op GTFO reveals new spine-chilling “shadow enemy”, receives multiple awards and nominations at E3 2018

Horror co-op GTFO reveals new spine-chilling “shadow enemy”, receives multiple awards and nominations at E3 2018

Swedish independent game dev 10 Chambers Collective – formed from a small team of veterans previously known for titles such as PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2 – attended E3 to let people test their upcoming horror co-op FPS GTFO. The title received multiple awards and nominations, such as “Best Cooperative Game” and “Best of E3”, and the week after – at Unity developer conference Unite Berlin 2018 – they showcased even more gameplay and revealed a new enemy.

10 Chambers Collective, an independent Swedish development team led by the game designer behind the PAYDAY franchise, Ulf Andersson, gave people a chance to try their upcoming game GTFO for the first time at E3 2018.

The hardcore co-op FPS, that really put the journalists’ gaming skills to the test, has gained notoriety for being developed by a team of only nine people – and gained several nominations and awards from publications that tried the game. Among the accolades were awards for “Best Cooperative Game” and “Editors’ Choice Award” as well as nominations for “Best of E3” and “Best in Show”.

Just the week after E3, the team attended Unity’s developer conference Unite Berlin – where the 3D engine developer highlighted the GTFO development team’s impressive use of their Unity technology.

During the Unite Berlin keynote, GTFO’s Creative Director Ulf Andersson showed off some new gameplay as well as a previously unrevealed enemy. In the gameplay trailer shown, the co-op team can be seen wandering around the dark complex with one of the players picking up enemy movement on his motion tracker – but they can’t seem to see it with their bare eyes. Seconds later, the team explodes into a shooting frenzy with what seems to be hostile, living shadows.

“GTFO has an incredibly tense atmosphere where death lurks around every corner. With the Shadow enemy, death can lurk right in front of you but you can’t quite see it… It’s just one of several ways that GTFO messes with the player” says Simon Viklund, member of 10 Chambers Collective.

The monster can only be made out when it’s moving in relation to the surrounding light sources – such as a player’s flashlight. This makes it almost impossible to show the shadow enemy in a static screenshot, which is why the press material will only contain media showing it in motion.

GTFO will be released at the end of 2018 and can already be wishlisted on Steam. Interact with 10 Chambers Collective on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, and join the ambassador program to get development info ahead of the public.

Scarface Review

Scarface

Studios: Universal Pictures
Platforms: Cinema
Release Date: Out Now

Overview

Scarface is a cinema classic which has found a dear place in the heart of many people who admire the gumption of its protagonist. Having seen parts of the film previously, I looked forward to catching the full breadth of it’s majesty in a proper cinema theatre as it was originally intended to be screened.

I have enjoyed my outings to In the House with their previous screenings of crime epics including The Godfather parts 1 and 2 and most recently, Once Upon a Time in America. I looked forward to seeing this other masterpiece on the big screen as I made my way down to George Street cinemas for their screening of Scarface.

Story

The story follows the Cuban criminal, Tony Montana (Al Pacino), as he is forceably exiled from Cuba and finds himself in the United States. He ingratiates himself to a local drug dealer by murdering a Cuban Communist which earns him his green card to stay permanently in the States. Through luck, courage and bravado, Tony continues climbing up the criminal hierarchy as his ambition continuously pushes him for more. His greed and avarice for money, power, and women pushes him to excel but will he be brutal enough to meet the needs of his ambition?

The protagonist is an absolute monster driven by the worst impulses that could motivate a human being to get out of bed each day. His motivation is pure avarice which fuels his ambition and drive to the top but also means that he languishes when he finds himself of the criminal hierarchy. His dramatic rise and fall are captivating to watch in the same way that one must watch footage of a train accident; with grim fascination and disgust. His character is reprehensible, but it is easy to see why it is that he is so iconic in the cinema landscape; his personality is so clear that you’ll remember him even if you despise everything about him.

The performance of Pacino, in this vein, is par excellence. He conveys the character with all the charm, courage, cruelty and viciousness that you’d expect from a gangster. There is a certain nuance to the character which can be easily overlooked if one was only to focus on the most dramatic aspects of the persona. Somewhere in the fractured and toxic mentalscape of our protagonist, there appears to have be a rudimentary set of morals guiding his actions which, I would argue, is quite alien to the moral compasses of most of you reading this. Pacino captures and portrays this alien moral landscape in a relatable and interesting way. It’s easy to portray a monster but it’s impressive to insert that humanising nuance complicate both the story and the character.

The supporting cast are similarly strong across the board with excellent performances all round although their purpose appears to be largely to stand in juxtaposition to our volatile protagonist. Steven Bauer does a great job as Tony’s long-suffering and devoted partner in crime, Manny Ribera, and gives us an interesting character who is both loyal but terrified of his murderous friend. Michelle Pfeiffer as Elivira Hancock fills her role as well as the script allows but isn’t give much to work with in regard to any part of her character which isn’t defined by her relationship to Tony. Similarly, Mary Mastrantonio plays a similar role as Tony’s sister and does well as she contends with a similar problem.

Both women are given characters to play that are somewhat two-dimensional in their characterisation which is a bit of a shame since they both could have worked with more. An interesting justification for this limited character depth could be that as the film largely revolves around Tony and his view of the world, these characters are both being viewed through a misogynistic which attempts to simplify the characters of these women. It’s still a shame that both these actors were given such limited roles but Scarface is focused upon exploration of its eponymous protagonist.

Visuals

The film’s visual direction makes excellent use of space, montage, and frame composition to both display the greed and power relations of our protagonist. The visual aesthetic of the film follows a naturalistic for most of the film except when it chooses to depict the excess of Tony at the height of his power. In a similar vein, there is a fairly notorious sequence in the film’s third act which is uniquely harrowing even by today’s standards. The film does artfully cut away before really showing anything truly graphically violent but only after a singular moment of gratuitous violence which will, no doubt, unsettle many of you too. Violence is something that you’d imagine would be par for the course in a crime film but this is film deals with it in a form of excess which can be hard to stomach and quite upsetting. Its explosive climax engages in a similar degree of violent excess for a dramatic finale.

Audio

The film’s soundtrack has a wide array of stylistic influences and a mix of genres in their pieces which pretty much mean the film has a little something for everyone in its playlist. The film does play with a very synth‑heavy musical score that reinforces the 80s feel of the film. There’s a distinct and almost menacing distortion effect to the synthy beats which creates an unsettling cacophony to reinforce the off-putting nature of the film’s action. Since it was produced and released in the early 80s, there’s a strong disco influence that you find in many of the nightclub scenes especially and further reinforce the tone of the era it’s dealing with. There are strong Latin American and Caribbean influences which similarly set the tone for scenes on the Miami beach front or the jungles of Colombia. It’s a great score which functional and has some absolute bangers which you’ll probably want to listen to again after the film’s credits roll.

Overall

Overall, it is easy to see why this film has become such a seminal piece of cinematic work. The film’s narrative is focused around a volatile and vile human being who is absolutely captivating to watch. The film’s visual direction is mostly subtle except when it unleashes an excess of debauchery and violence upon you. The film’s soundtrack features plenty of pieces used to great effect which add to the film’s overall theme, tone, and feeling in a constructive and effective way. All of the film’s elements come together to create a cinematic experience which will stay with you long after you’ve watched it; that, I would argue, is the sign of a great film and I’m glad to have seen it properly in a cinema.

Kudos to the folks at In the House for screening this classic!

The lineup is completed by the two modern classics from the 2000s (2009 Brawn BGP-001 & 2003 Williams FW25) that are available in the exclusive Headline Edition of F1 2018 at launch, and later as DLC*.

“We are delighted to bring 20 classic cars to F1 2018,” commented Lee Mather, Game Director, F1 2018. “The classics were extremely popular in last year’s game so we naturally wanted to offer our players even more choice this time. Sci-fi Arcade Runner ZIQ Dashes onto PC, and Mac on August 1

Sci-fi Arcade Runner ZIQ Dashes onto PC, and Mac on August 1

PORTLAND, OR – July 12, 2018 – ZIQ, the frenetic sci-fi arcade runner from Midnight Sea and 3D Realms, dodges, dashes, and leaps onto PC and Mac on August 1.

Swarm, an ancient AI turned malevolent and spiteful is waging a war on all life. Having narrowly escaped complete destruction at the hands of organics he both hates and fears them. The AI grows massive, devouring entire planets to fuel and construct his unstoppable armies in an unending vendetta against organic life. Swarm’s armies of nanoform soldiers fair no better. The prototype Z series IQ nanite (ZIQ) is currently being put through countless experiments to improve the soldier’s neural network.

These torturous tests take the form of treacherous obstacle courses that ZIQ must complete. With nanoforms’ ability to endless reconstruct, death offers no respite. With more than 25 obstacles and hundreds of possible combinations he faces a difficult journey. But his ability to switch polarity at any time gives players the edge needed to succeed across seven themed procedurally-generated stages filled with traps such as pools of acid beneath sinking floors, pop-up walls that appear at the last second, and polarized obstacles that can only be survived by quickly swapping polarities.

Crafty players can collect charge cores to complete a sequence for extra points. If these sequences are chained together seven times ZIQ becomes Overcharged and can destroy those pesky polarity traps for additional points by opposing their polarity. Nabbing pickups at just the right time (ranging from good to perfect) affords even more points. Climb up the global leaderboard on the pile of nanites left behind with each excruciating death!

Indifferent to ZIQ’s suffering and deaths, Swarm is as generous with his insults as he is with fresh nanoforms. Voiced by YouTube’s Dash Star, Swarm is not content to simply torture ZIQ with an onslaught of deadly experiments. No no, he has to berate him the whole time, too! The better the player, the crueler Swarm becomes, increasing the difficulty of the stage. Fly through unforgiving stages in abstract sci-fi levels and watch as the dark synth music changes the environment, all while being incessantly heckled.

ZIQ is our first game, and it’s for players like us who love score-chasing and difficult precise reaction-based gameplay,” said Josh Ryan, co-founder of Midnight Sea. “We’re looking forward to the mountain of dead nanites players will amass in order to pass us on the leaderboards.”

ZIQ will be available digitally in English on Steam for $9.99 USD.

To learn more, please visit ZIQ’s official site, or follow the game on Twitter and Facebook.

Built from scratch by a seasoned game development team from industry giants like Riot Games, Blizzard, and Ubisoft, Icons: Combat Arena is inspired by the early days of competitive fighting games, when anyone could jump in and immediately start having fun throwing out piercing punches, mighty shockwaves, and bruising body blocks.

Icons: Combat Arena Features:

  • Iconic Fighters: Seven playable characters are available at Early Access launch with more scheduled to come. Whether you choose the playful bounty hunter Kidd or the imperious empress Zhurong, there is a fighter whose style and backstory will inspire you.
  • Lightning Fast Gameplay: Movement controls are precise and responsive, while unique combinations of mechanics create strategic depth. Play with a Gamecube controller, GamePad, keyboard, and more.
  • Free to Play: No purchase necessary to jump in and play! Shop items do not affect game balance. Nearly all purchasable content can be earned through gameplay.
  • Customization Options: Want to play a cyberpunk sharpshooter or an elegant swordswoman ninja? Icons features skins, taunts, emotes, player portraits, and other customization items bursting with personality.
  • Multiple Game Modes: Finding a worthy opponent is as easy as hooking up local multiplayer, jumping into our online matchmaking system, or browsing custom matches – with more modes to come.
  • Competitive Balance: Picturesque arenas evoking different parts of the Icons universe are rigorously balanced for fair play, no matter the matchup. The core competitive mode is a pure test of skill, with no combat items or powerups.
  • Esports Ecosystem: Wavedash Games will begin hosting open-entry online and offline tournaments soon. Follow Icons on social media for updates!
