Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Launch Trailer Revealed

Activision released the launch trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 today. The trailer features short clips of the the zombie experiences, the traditional multiplayer modes, and the new battle royale Blackout mode.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 takes the series back to the traditional ground-based combat, being more in the vein of Call of Duty: WWII than Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Still, Black Ops 4 is designed for fast paced gameplay thanks to tools like grappling hooks that will allow players to get behind cover in a hurry.

While Black Ops 4 is ditching the singleplayer campaign in favour of the new Blackout battle royale mode, the game’s story is expected to be told through the game’s multiplayer component. The new Blackout battle royale mode is set on a massive map built with parts from iconic maps from the three previous Black Ops titles. Players will need to scavenge weapons and vehicles from the entire Black Ops franchise and fight to be the last one standing.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows via the Battle.net launcher on October 12th.

Overview

The saying of not fixing something that isn’t broken doesn’t tend to get tossed around a lot in the game industry since experimentation can be the key to success. In the case of the Valkyria Chronicles‘ franchise however this type of experimentation has led to some rather odd results. After a successful first game that was even remastered and released once again on current consoles the series went on to appear with a PSP sequel and then a third game that was never released in the West. After some further experimentation the series has returned to its roots in Valkyria Chronicles 4 and that saying has never been as true as it is with entry in the franchise.

Story

Set during the Second Europan War the story follows commander Claude Wallace of the elite Squad E of the Federation Army. Although Claude and a number of his friends who have also enlisted in the Federation army originally lived in the country of Gallia, players who are unfamiliar with the first game do not need to worry too much about missing out on the fact that these games take place at the same time other than missing out on some easter egg references here and there.

With the war raging on the Federation army has continued to suffer losses to the Imperial Alliance and headquarters has decided on making a last ditch attempt at breaking through the Imperial army. Dubbed Operation Northern Cross, Claude’s squadron and nearly every force that the Federation has to spare are tasked with advancing on and eventually trying to capture the Imperial capital. With a seemingly endless supply of foes standing in front of them as they pierce through enemy lines, Claude must do what he can to keep his fellow soldiers alive while still completing the tasks handed down to him by his superiors.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 balances the fine line of telling a satisfying war story where players find themselves not truly in control of everything that happens. This is a war and there are more than a few times that players will feel like Claude and his squad are nothing more than a tool being used to complete a mission, even if they don’t happen to always agree with what that mission is or whether or not sacrifices will end up being made to accomplish it. Alongside this bigger picture of war there are also a number of twists and interesting story details that are hinted at throughout the game, with one of the biggest mysteries beginning very early in the title, before their big reveal.

Of course not everything is dark and dreary in this game as there are still plenty of humorous moments and “anime” style hijinks that occur throughout the game. There are numerous little side cut-scenes that help flesh out the members of your squad, especially when it comes to Claude and his childhood friends Raz, Kai, and Riley that eventually join his squadron. Romance is fluttered around a bit and players will end up learning quite a lot about their fellow squad members both through their little quirks that determine their potentials as well as special squad stories.

These squad stories can be unlocked by using various side-characters numerous times together in a mission and while not every character appears to have a mission like this, it is interesting to learn more about why some of these characters act like they do and the history behind their quirks. These squad stories play out through a number of cutscenes culminating in a battle using the units that the story focuses on, though be careful since soldiers can die permanently if poorly handled, potentially ruining some side stories.

Gameplay

One of the many ways that Valkyria Chronicles 4 remains similar to the original is through most of its gameplay elements. Like the original this entry brings with it a blend of strategy RPG and real-time combat as players will find themselves organizing a squad of up to ten soldiers at a time to take down their targets. Your chosen troops can be deployed in various formations and while most fights require a few specific units, it is entirely possible to complete most fights using your favorite soldiers regardless of their unit type unless you happen upon a fairly frequent spike in difficulty.

At the beginning of every turn the player is given a number of “Command Points” where they can use one to select and move a unit around the map with said unit being able to take one action during their turn while moving around the field. While moving it is possible to be fired upon by enemy soldiers and various enemy installations that are close to the unit, making movement something players really need to worry about since interception fire can be deadly. Once the player finds where they want to shoot from, it is as simple as aiming and firing with the selected weapon with the actual accuracy determined by the unit’s stats and where the player aimed. Besides firing their primary weapon units can also use healing items or toss a grenade with specialized Engineers being able to resupply allies with ammo, repair sandbags, and remove mines all without sacrificing their turn.

As mentioned, the Engineers serve as the most specialized class due to their nature of repairing fortifications and vehicles (at the cost of a turn in the latter case) as well as removing dangerous enemy munitions while the more straightforward classes are the nimble scouts capable of long range movement, shocktroopers that utilize powerful machine guns and can take a hit, snipers that specialize in long-range combat, Lancers that wield bazooka style weaponry that can deal heavy damage to tanks and enemy installations, and a brand new class, Grenadiers.

Grenadiers are something of a special case in Valkyria Chronicles 4 as they allow for long-distance high damage dealing potential. Working as a mortar style unit Grenadiers can only target enemies that are either within their sight or are spotted by another unit and can then launch a powerful explosive at them from a distance. They can also launch smaller grenades through the use of interception fire, making them a powerful new force on the battlefield. That being said, the opponents can also have grenadiers on their team and they can make for a rather deadly force that you’ll need to keep an eye on and potentially pick out with either a sniper or your own grenadier.

Players also have the option of using Orders at the cost of CP where Claude can provide various boosts to an ally unit, heal them, or even call in a medic for a downed unit to remove them from danger and potential death. Further into the game players will even gain access to Ship Orders that open up plenty of new ways to work around your units. As mentioned earlier, each unit has various potentials that can raise or lower certain stats and learning to manage these units to your benefit can really make or break certain battles. This is especially true in the case of certain characters liking one another or not. Keeping friendly soldiers together will allow them to provide back up firing, where more than one unit can fire at a target at a time, and allow for players to turn certain areas into complete kill zones for enemies on the move, especially if you keep them behind critical hit negating sandbag cover.

Playing to these strengths may seem like a way to easily blow away certain enemies but the simple beginnings of the game that tend to feel a little slow just serve as a way to prepare players for the difficulty spikes that occur throughout the game. A number of times Claude and his men will enter a battle only to have the circumstances change halfway through the fight, changing the objective and occasionally placing your soldiers on their heels. This can make for some difficult fights but in a way this makes sure to keep players on their toes and keep things feeling fresh, especially since a good challenge is always something to keep a player invested. There is also the option to save during fights, potentially leading to some dangerous situations where you may have no chance to back out of, but it is useful in a number of ways as some battles can be long and, at least in a couple of cases, the game can crash and force players to start a fight over again.

It is worth noting that outside of combat players can use experience and research points earned during battle to level up their unit classes, powering each soldier and unlocking potentials for every member of that class, as well as unlock new weapons that can boost accuracy, rate of fire, damage against certain types of foes, as well as bonuses to equip to your vehicles.

Visuals & Audio

Once again Sega has made sure to keep the sketchbook aesthetic of Valkyria Chronicles alive with this entry in the series with the cut-scenes all presented with gorgeous looking character designs for the main cast as well as most of the side characters. In fact, there is even a section of the game that takes place during a wintry season that gives the cast a chance to wear extra outfits. It is worth noting that while the core cast is designed incredibly well and animated fluidly, random enemy soldiers and background NPCs are presented in a faceless bland manner which can ruin the look of the game sometimes, especially with almost all enemies having the same appearances that match their unit class. It is worth noting that the environmental designs are nicely handled in a way to simulate the European landscapes that the Europa war wants to emulate. That being said, the pathing in the game can be a bit difficult at times with characters often getting caught on random elements in the field that they should be able to pass.

The background music is handled quite well with a number of great tracks mixed throughout the game as well as some incredibly well done vocal tracks. It is worth noting that the background radio chatter can occasionally be a bit off from what is actually happening in a fight but this is only a minor note as, otherwise, the English voice acting is nicely done.

Overall

Valkyria Chronicles 4 feels like a true sequel to a series that has stumbled ever since it found initial success. By following a brand new story set during the same events of the first game, longtime fans will be able to easily pick up the game and continue to follow the plot while newcomers won’t feel like they are missing out on core details by jumping in this late into the franchise. By offering new gameplay elements that only help refine the already impressive combat mechanics and a solid storyline that lasts for a satisfying while, players will see that Valkyria Chronicles 4 is everything a fan of the franchise could ask for.

Video Review

Overview

Like every good sports series, NBA 2K19 is out like clockwork. This year brings updates to fan favourite modes like MyCAREER and MyTEAM, the next chapter in the MyGM saga, and more.

Story

NBA 2K19 offers a full-blown story in the MyCAREER mode. Players take on the role of A.I., an undrafted basketball player trying to work his way to the NBA through Chinese basketball teams and the NBA G League. The writers clearly have lofty goals with the story, embarking on a hero like adventure of self discovery. While the writers put up a serious attempt, NBA 2K19’s story falls short. A.I. is an obnoxious character, embodying the worst stereotype of the entitled millennial. A.I. does find his way, but the whole transition feels a little unnatural and rushed. While the caricature like supporting character seem to be attempts at comic relief, they generally are way too over the top. The lone bright spot is Coach Keller, who balances out his ridiculous outbursts with some genuine good leader moments.

MyGM mode continues the story from last year’s title. It’s obvious this mode plays second fiddle to MyCAREER as the writing tends to be pretty corny and dry. It is nice to see the game trying to bring in new players, offering them a chance to establish the events of NBA 2K18 before they swing into things.

Most of the writing is taken up by play by play commentary. For the most part, there is a good variety of play by play banter that keeps things fresh. The commentary in MyCAREER’s story games are a bit on the limited side though as cutscenes get brought up repeatedly during the play by play. I would have preferred to hear more of the regular play by play make it into these MCAREER games.

Gameplay

NBA 2K19 is a thorough simulation of the full basketball experience. As a person who has only followed the NBA casually off and on over the years, I was pretty overwhelmed by the game. Besides the usual quick matches and league play, NBA 2K19 offers four My modes. MyCAREER and MyLEAGUE are probably the most accurate modes. MyCAREER offers players the chance to create their very own character and experience the game’s story mode. MyLEAGUE is a fancy name for the classic GM mode and is expanded further in MyGM. MyTEAM mixes collectible card game with basketball action.

As a newbie to the series, I found NBA 2K19 to be extremely daunting. The tutorials are terrible. 2KU is dedicated to learning the game. There are options for practice matches, scrimmages, shoot arounds, but no actual tutorial to teach players from scratch. The closest thing is the tutorial match that randomly reveals tooltips. In the end, learning how to play requires a mix of wading through the instruction manual and figuring things out on your own.

While the game’s tutorials are terrible, there are a lot of options in game to help lower the difficulty level a little, such as letting the AI handle play making and handy overlays that guides players to the correct position according to the playbook. While the game’s learning curve is still pretty high, not having to worry about calling or memorizing plays helps new players worry more about the fundamentals. Even with these handicaps, the game is still incredibly challenging.

NBA 2K19 plays well. Shooting requires a decent amount of skill, and the game feels very responsive. Once I got over the initial learning curve, I did enjoy shooting the ball around, even though I am still downright awful at the game.

The controls feel natural and scale well for a variety of difficulty levels. The basic controls are simple enough, but serious players will have the opportunity to pull off advance maneuvers using the Pro Stick control system. On the flip side, this means PC gamers will really need to use a controller.

MyLEAGUE mode is the full GM experience. Gamers will get a chance to manage all the minutiae of running a team. This mode is probably the closest to a hard-core simulation of the complete NBA experience, from managing coaching staff, negotiating trades, scouting for prospects, and a little bit of actual basketball thrown in. The MyGM mode takes things a bit further by adding a story mode that brings the Seattle SuperSonics back with the player as the GM. It’s not the most newbie friendly of modes, but it’s a very thorough mode that will put basketball geeks to the test.

One of the two headline modes, MyCAREER lets gamers create and improve their own player that will work their way into the NBA. Once into the pros, players will be able to negotiate their own contracts, rake in that sweet endorsement money, join their team for the NBA season, and hop online to play against other gamers from around the world. It’s a whole lot of fun as it gives time for gamers to get really attached to their character and focus on a position or play style they really like. NBA 2K19’s push for in-game currency purchases really puts a damper on the fun. The game requires a lot of grinding to get stats up to a reasonable level as everything must be purchased with in game currency.

MyTEAM mode mixes trading card games with basketball. Players open packs of cards with either the same gold currency from MyCAREER or silver MyTEAM currency. Cards can vary from current and past players, cosmetic items, playbooks, and consumable buffs. The game modes offer a mix of single player and multiplayer content in classic 5v5 or street style 3v3 basketball. While the trade card game aspect and the flexibility are a neat twist to the classic basketball game, NBA 2K19 really pushes currency sales hard on this mode too. Every pack purchase defaults to purchasable currency, and it feels overly pushy. If gamers are desperate for a specific card and are sick of opening packs, there’s always the auction house, but of course that will cost you too.

Visuals

NBA 2K19 is a gorgeous game that replicates the TV sports experience perfectly. The animations are smooth, with only the rare blocky transition when the camera zooms on players near the bench for commercial breaks and time outs. Players are looking closer and closer to photorealistic every year, and NBA 2K19 is no different.

Audio

NBA 2K19 nails the audio experience. The voice acting is excellent, and the play by plays are great. It’s a shame the MyGM mode seems to be an afterthought as there is no voice acting, just old school text boxes. The sound effects are spot on, and NBA 2K19 offers plenty of volume options to make the game sound like the gamer is watching TV or sitting court side. The game also has an excellent soundtrack with some big-name artists providing music.

Overall

NBA 2K19 is a decent and challenging basketball game hidden behind a high learning curve and a terrible tutorial system. It seems like the developers aren’t really interested in converting gamers into basketball fans, and I’m not entirely sure the developers are interested in converting casual basketball fans into gamers either. While the game offers some excellent controls and challenging gameplay, the story feels rushed and the characters are annoying. For those already into the NBA 2K franchise, this year’s iteration offers lots of content, solid gameplay, and a ton of frustrating microtransaction strategies. The game is way too pushy, forcing players to grind a lot of games or pony up money to be competitive in marquee MyCAREER mode. Things aren’t much better in the MyTEAM mode either. Short of some serious post-launch balancing of microtransactions, NBA 2K19 is probably firmly in the court of existing NBA 2K fans.

Test Your Survival Skills in Open World Adventure Stranded Deep, Launching October 9 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

The successful ‘desert island’ Steam title leaves Early Access first on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, complete with new features and content. Pre-orders and new console trailer available now.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., September 20th, 2018 — Leading publisher of digital entertainment Telltale Games, alongside developer Beam Team Games, today announced that open world survival game Stranded Deep will be available for download on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starting October 9, 2018. Pre-orders are now available for $19.99 USD on PlayStation 4 and will also be available on Xbox One soon. You can download the new trailer by following the links above.

Product Description: In the aftermath of a mysterious plane crash, you’re left stranded on a chain of deserted islands somewhere in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Alone and without any means to call for help, you must test your survival skills in this dynamic open world adventure. Explore underwater and on land as you hunt for materials to craft the tools, weapons, and shelter you’ll need to stay alive. But stay sharp: hunger, thirst, and exposure can be just as deadly as the wildlife. Live long enough, and you might just make it home…

  • Survive in Paradise – From lush tropical islands to bottomless ocean trenches to coral reefs teeming with life, experience a vast and dynamic world filled with secrets to uncover and threats to overcome. Scour a sunken ship, scale a rocky cliff, or kick back on the beach and watch the sunset (just try not to freeze once night falls).
  • Battle the Elements – Manage your thirst, hunger, and more in a challenging and immersive fight for survival. Gather materials needed to craft tools, shelter, and, eventually, transport. Face down the ocean’s deadliest predators in terrifying up-close encounters. Whether it’s sharks, storms, or dehydration, any moment could be your last.
  • Test Your Nerve – With opt-in permadeath, random loot, rare collectibles, and the option to procedurally randomize the world (or manually customize your own), each playthrough can be uniquely treacherous. When hours of progress are on the line, every risk/reward scenario becomes that much more harrowing.
  • Complete the Journey – With its arrival on consoles, Stranded Deep now boasts a wealth of additional content: new items, new wildlife, new mysteries, and most importantly, a definitive ending. Your ultimate goal? To escape back to civilization. Just beware the “boss” creatures that lurk in the deep…

Stranded Deep started as a successful Steam Early Access title, and will now launch as a complete, fully-featured single-player experience on consoles. Content created for the console release will also arrive on PC later this year, following the console launch. In addition, Stranded Deep on PS4 and Xbox One will be available in the following languages at launch: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

Stranded Deep has been rated ‘Teen’ by the ESRB. For more information on the game, visit the official website and follow Telltale Publishing on Twitter. For more information on developer Beam Team, visit beamteamgames.com.
