30XX, Sequel to Acclaimed Top-Seller 20XX, Unveiled

30XX, Sequel to Acclaimed Top-Seller 20XX, Unveiled

Coming to PC and Consoles in 2021, Debut of Hands-on Gameplay at PAX East 2020

POST-HUMAN EARTH – 14 Feb. 30XX – Batterystaple Games, the studio behind 20XX which was named one of the Top Early Access Graduates of 2017 by Valve and purchased by more than 200,000 fans of co-op roguelike platformer action, is proud to announce a follow-up to its hit first effort, 30XX. Developed with support from Kowloon Nights, 30XX will make its debut at PAX East 2020 before double jumping and dashing to Windows PC and consoles in 2021.

Inspired by classic Mega Man titles and infused with modern design, 30XX builds upon 20XX’s Megaroguelike foundation with a plethora of new features including a new hi-bit art style from art director Glauber Kotaki (Rogue Legacy, Duelyst, and Chasm) and a fresh set of eight new worlds to explore, each with their own identity, platforming mechanics, and fearsome Guardian.

Beyond the aesthetic overhaul, 20XX heroes Nina and Ace return with a myriad of new abilities. No longer merely wielding different primary weapons, in 30XX the powerful pair possess entirely distinct move sets allowing greater freedom of expression for both exploring levels and beating back the machines holding Earth prisoner.

Nina’s new Power Fusion system allows her to meld together abilities earned from vanquishing bosses and tailor them to the situation at hand with 64 separate attacks. Meanwhile, the blade-brandishing Ace boasts a versatile set of Techniques, which can be chained together with standard attacks to unleash fierce combos, adapt to any situation, and reach new heights.

30XX also introduces a fresh level of roguelike challenge and reward with its new metagame currency, Memoria. Collected during runs, Memoria can augment the experience, boosting character abilities, giving keen insight into the challenges to come, or altering how stages generate other helping hands. Once certain criteria are met, turn up the heat with Entropy Conditions, introducing optional layers of additional difficulty in exchange for Memoria and other rewards.

“The response to 20XX has been incredible, but we still see many ways we can continue to improve and expand upon the wonderful game our community helped us build,” said Chris King, founder of Batterystaple. “With 30XX, our mission is to realize the limitless potential the genre offers, and we can’t wait to bring our fans into the fold to help shape the process.”

30XX will be available for hands-on demos in the Indie MEGABOOTH at booth 21027 during PAX East 2020 in Boston, Mass. Feb. 27-March 1 ahead of its full release across Windows PC and other video game platforms in 2021.

For more information on 30XX, pleasevisit the game’s Steam Coming Soon page and the official Batterystaple Games website, join the 20XX series Discord community and follow the studio on Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook.

DAEMON X MACHINA Review

DAEMON X MACHINA

Developer: Marvelous Inc
Publisher: XSEED Games
Platforms: SwitchWindows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 13 Feb 2020
Price: $59,99USD – Available Here $79,95AUD – Available Here

Overview

With the recent renaissance of console exclusives hitting the PC, we were showered with a plethora of previously unplayable (that is if you’re on a PC) games. There is now something for everyone. Racing games, RPGs, story-rich adventures and so on. Yet, there has been one genre on all platforms that is kinda niche in its offerings. Mech games are anything but plentiful but whenever they appear, they are sure to leave a mark. Front Mission series, Armored Core series, and even that weird Ring of Red game were the culprits for so many gaming hours I sank into my PS2. And now, I have something new in my hands. Well, more like something old, but upgraded with a touch of a facelift. DAEMON X MACHINA first appeared on Nintendo Switch in 2019 and now a year later, we get to play it on a PC with some added goodies.

Story

” You are an Outer, a new breed of human being that appeared in the aftermath of the Moonfall calamity. As a mercenary for the Orbital organization, you are on the front line of a desperate war for humanity’s survival against the Immortals – corrupted AIs that have rebelled against their human creators. Piloting a fully customizable mech known as an Arsenal, you must team up with mercenaries like yourself and complete missions to defeat the Immortals once and for all. But be careful—in a war fought by mercenaries, today’s allies can become tomorrow’s enemies.”

Flashy description blurb but what does it tell us? It is a fast-paced mech game ala Armored Core where you can change your weapons on the fly and oh boy, there sure is an abundance of what you can shoot your enemies with. Assault rifles, canons, energy sword, shields and so on. They’re available as a mission rewards and more often as the enemy drops. Let’s continue.

” From the visionary minds of Kenichiro Tsukuda and trailblazing mech designer Shoji Kawamori…..”

Wait, what??!!! Hold the heck up! The father of Armored Core and an acclaimed mech designer have their hands in this?! Well, color me interested now. Enough talking, let’s start this game up.

Gameplay

As I said, the PC version of DAEMON X MACHINA comes with a few improvements such as additional Arsenal parts and weapons, Outer modifications, Colossal Immortal battles, and an Exploration Mission co-op mode. Enemy variety in the game is not huge but they’re cleverly sprinkled throughout the missions so you never feel like you’re fighting the same waves of them over and over. Drones and tanks are easy meat but some boss battles and enemy mechs are sure to put your reaction time on the edge. In DAEMON X MACHINA, there’s no such thing as a perfect mech setup. While the weapons come in a great variety, it’s really up to the player and their personal preference when it comes to what to pick (for me, a strong assault rifle + a light sword was a winning combo), so there’s no end in customizing. But customizing doesn’t stop just there. You are given almost limitless options when it comes to pimping your mech with decals, colors, sigils and so on. One thing that I noticed at this point is the extremely bareboned tutorial. On the first few missions, the game will tell you the mere basics of aiming, shooting and picking up loot but anything more complex such as evading enemies, weapon selection and skills is up to you to discover – often through trial and error approach.

Visuals

The game plays in a polished cell shading style in lieu of the Borderlands series and XIII. It’s pretty smart design choice since it gives it more of that anime-ish feel. It does feel a bit weird sometimes, like the character faces were oiled up so they could shine even more and mech that just came out of a car wash. With its campy dialogue, voice acting and character design, playing DAEMON X MACHINA often feel like binging a whole season of some anime. Also, the color palette in the game will take some time to get used to. Everything is saturated and emphasized with flashy colors, giving it some unique cyber-neon-punk feel. In the end, it looks great and it runs great. I had no issues hitting over 60 fps at any point during my playthrough, even with multiple enemies on the screen and their missile spam.

Audio

Because I mentioned the everpresent anime feel above, you should expect the voice acting to be over the top sometimes and almost all of the characters having their drama queen moment(s). When it comes to the soundtrack, it’s certainly there but there is also nothing I could single out as being memorable. The weapon effects are a bit above generic and were given some attention during development. After a short while, you can tell what weapon the enemy is using based on audio cues alone (instead of, you know, waiting to kill them and picking up the said weapon). In short, the voice acting got some extra polish while everything else took a back seat.

Overall

DAEMON X MACHINA landed itself in a peculiar spot. Surely, the game could use ironing despite being just fine as it is. It has the luck of appearing in a rough of mech games so it’s not like you can pick some other similar game to play (that you haven’t played already). If anything, the extensive customization options when it comes to weapons and mech visuals puts it on the “above average” shelf so consider giving it a try. The huge selection of weapons also extends itself onto the replay value of DAEMON X MACHINA so once you finish one playthrough, there are new ways of play to discover as you slice through the enemies instead of blowing them up.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics Review

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics

Developer: BonusXP
Publisher: En Masse Entertainment
Platform: PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 4 February 2020
Price: $19.99 USD/$28.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been a well received prequel to Jim Henson’s beloved dark fantasy film The Dark Crystal. The streaming service is now wading into the video game market in partnership with BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment by creating a game adaptation of the show’s first season. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics offers viewers of the show a chance to relive key moments of the show and experience some events that were not covered in season one.

Story

The game’s story is more of a companion to the TV series than a standalone title. The writing is shallow. The writers have put minimal effort in world building or plot development, often running with the assumption the player is reasonably familiar with The Dark Crystal franchise. The short chapters contribute to the poor plot development. The game bills itself as recounting key moments from the season but really, it’s simply axed all the important parts of storytelling to fit an entire TV season into a short game.

Gameplay

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a turn-based strategy RPG featuring characters from the TV series and the film. The combat is the strongest aspect of the game. It is challenging without being utterly punishing. It’s possible to make a mistake or two in the game and still recover. Environmental hazards are a major part of combat. Passive hazards can be used as traps for unsuspecting enemies. Active hazards will occur after a certain number of turns, causing some sort of major effect on the battlefield. A smart player can use this to their advantage, such as using the winds to stall the enemy’s approach. The environment adds a neat twist to the classic SRPG gameplay. The combat has a few issues though. The boss designs are quite dull and repetitive. More unique abilities would make these encounters more interesting. A restart battle button in game is a much-needed quality of life addition.

The job system gives players some flexibility on how they want to build their party. Each job has its own set of skills. Each character can equip a primary job that provides three skills and a secondary job that provides two skills. Characters start as one of the three base jobs. After a certain number of levels in a prerequisite job, more specialized jobs are unlocked. The first ten levels are rough for spellcasters. The mender class is a prerequisite for the mage classes but can only offer magical attacks if they are equipped with a spell book. By default, all the starting menders are equipped with staves. It would have made life easier and cheaper to equip half with staves and half with spell books. The game gives players a lot of characters to use, but players are effectively encouraged to stick to a small party as there is no way to keep all characters leveled together without a lot of grinding.

The equipment system is very basic. One or two items will occasionally drop from battles, so most of the equipment will be purchased from the store. Managing equipment is clunky as players need to go into individual character or item pages to see who has what equipped. Many classes can use more than one type of armour, even though their class is optimized for one type. This clutters up the armour purchasing menus, forcing players to wade through a lot of characters who have no business wearing cloth armour in order to equip things on their mages.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is bogged down by its grind-heavy nature. To minimize grinding, players need to stick with a group of five characters balanced between tanks, mages, physical damage dealers, and healers right off the bat. This method will still require a couple of randomly generated encounters every few story missions. Players who waffle on characters and jobs or have a lot of characters die during combat will be stuck grinding even more to make up for missed experience. Considering the grinding is all randomly generated missions, replacing or augmenting them with optional scripted side missions would have cut down on the grind significantly.

The controls are decent. The layout is clearly designed with consoles in mind, but it never hinders the PC experience. The game does not seem to allow for keys to be rebound but playing the game with just the mouse works well for the exception of placing characters at the start of the battle. The game is very fussy, requiring the player to select a square with one click and then a character with another. Deviating from this just causes frustration.

Visuals

The graphic style is a cartoonish take on the franchise. While nowhere near as detailed or realistic looking as the Netflix series, the characters are instantly recognizable. The cut scenes are very simple, opting for mostly static comic book style panels. The animations are limited but well done.

Audio

The audio experience is decent, though nothing ever stands out. The sound effects and soundtrack are enjoyable. There is no voice acting, which is extremely disappointing. Considering the game is based on the events of the TV series, it would have been nice to see the voice actors provide lines for the cut scenes at bare minimum.

Overall

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a middling tactical RPG. While the combat is strong, the gameplay is hampered by grind-heavy design, messy equipment menus, and missing quality of life features. The dull presentation and weak story do nothing to bring in new people into The Dark Crystal franchise.  Fans of franchise should check the game out as it’s a decent title for TV and film adaptation standards. Fans of tactical RPGs will probably want to add this game to the wish list and wait for a deep discount.

Bio Inc. Nemesis Puts Doctors On Call for 26 February

Next Entry in Popular Strategy Franchise with more than 17 Million Downloads will Operate on iOS and Android Devices

MONTREAL – 14 Feb 2020 – Bio Inc. Nemesis, the next entry in DryGin Studios’ hit medical malpractice simulator franchise, will destroy digital families and patients’ lives on iOS and Android devices beginning Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020. The serial killer series has received more than 17 million downloads, with 400,000 coming this month alone due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Nemesis will prescribe large doses of the coronavirus, but not a cure. Take charge of a team of rebel doctors out to commit gross violations of the Hippocratic Oath, afflicting patients with diseases and infections before opposing physicians can practice life-saving medicine. Build up energy to unleash a myriad of maladies on patients, shutting down their nervous, circulatory, and respiratory systems while A.I.-controlled medics employ preventative measures.

Recruit from a pool of 30-plus doctors of death to join the cause including buttoned-up physicians, wacky-tobacky smoking alternative medicine practitioners, and more. Some such as Dr. Condo will have vaguely familiar names and faces.

Each medical malpractitioner comes with different talents, such as manipulating patients’ lifestyle, developing risk factors to help accelerate their demise, and thwart the other team’s preventative efforts. Upgrade each MD to make their deadly talents more effective and unlock new powers that increase the potency of their infections, as they work their way through increasingly more challenging and healthy patients.

Advance through the three campaigns and learn how to become the best-worst doctors in the business. Take on new medical mysteries with regularly-occurring Events and Challenges. Assemble a team of world-renowned deadly specialists and take on other players’ medical practices in head-to-head contests in Arena mode, with a competitive ladder system and rewards to be had for the best at their dereliction of duty.

Bio Inc. Nemesis was born from us thinking about how we could take Bio Inc. to the next level, and deliver on what fans of the first game really wanted,” said J-F. “Infecting patients with horrific diseases is ironically going to make you feel good.”

Bio Inc. Nemesis will be available as a free download on the App Store and Google Play on Feb. 26. For more information on Bio Inc. Nemesis, visit the official Bio Inc. website, follow DryGin Studios on Twitter, and like Bio Inc. on Facebook.
