Overview

There are a number of different ways developers can try and create a game that will scare players. Some go the visceral route with plenty of gore, others focus on mostly jump scares, or feature creepy environments that boggle the mind, but no matter which route or combination is taken, the key element to most horror games comes from their atmosphere. Tarsier Studios’ Little Nightmares surprised many when it originally released as it featured not only a strangely unsettling world filled with twisted sights that would make the skin crawl, but it also served as a great puzzle platformer at the same time. So now that the developers have continued their story with Little Nightmares II have they managed to improve upon their formula?

Story

Rather than continuing the story as Six, this time around players take control of a small boy named Mono. Mono crawls out of a television screen only to find himself trapped in a strange forest filled with traps and only one path to try and escape it. Along the way Mono finds himself saving the protagonist from the first game, Six, from a monstrous hunter’s cage only to find that the trap filled forest was the least of their worries as the horrors that exist within the house and further beyond inside of the Pale City.

Whereas the previous setting of The Maw offered plenty of dread with its immense size and nature, the fact that players are now seeing that the monsters that dwelled aboard the ship are not an anomaly but instead appear to be the norm for this twisted world and the small children that are Mono and Six are out of place. Similar to the previous game, Little Nightmares II focuses heavily on showing and not telling players about the world as the environments that the pair travels through are littered with creepy objects and little clues about the nature of what has happened to the city and how warped things are.

Across a roughly seven hour campaign players will venture through a variety of locations that, while we won’t spoil them specifically, each features grotesquely villainous adults that tower over the children and shine as some of the best moments of the game once again. Each level also features an additional unique threat to help keep things feeling fresh. There are many spine-tingling moments that await in each stage, especially when players make a mistake or are forced into a chase sequence as these moments reveal the true nature of some of these monstrous creatures.

Outside of the straight horrors that players see on screen there is a bit of social commentary running through Little Nightmares II as well as almost every stage in the game features television sets scattered around the world, some with dead people still watching them, others only surrounded by clothing, and even others that can be used to lure things to their deaths. This focus on showing off how the denizens of the Pale City have fallen into such an addiction to screens works fairly well compared to real life even if it is a bit on the nose. That being said, it does an extra bit of creepiness to the world of Little Nightmares II and considering how ghoulish it already is, that is quite an accomplishment.

Gameplay

For the most part Little Nightmares II plays similar to how the first game in the series played as Mono must navigate a world that was designed for beings much larger than he is. Players will find that while Mono can still jump, climb, push and pull objects, and throw things, there is a new tool in his arsenal that is new for Little Nightmares II and that is the ability to wield weapons. Occasionally players will be able to find sticks, pipes, or even a hammer that all happen to be oversized and can use these items to smash through an object that may be blocking his path or taking out a specific smaller foe but this is easier said than done. Since every weapon is so big for Mono, he requires a wind-up to swing it and is slowed down while dragging it along, meaning that players will need to purposefully time attacks to avoid a frustratingly quick death.

Of course, the best way to stay alive in Little Nightmares II is to stay out of sight and once again sneaking by crouch-walking below furniture, into shadows, diving underwater, and more works the best to avoid catching the deadly eye of each stage’s signature enemy. Of course being caught can and will bet met with an instant death or, in some scripted cases, a chase scene that requires players to think on their toes but thankfully even if they should fail the game has a fairly generous checkpoint system that can even pick-up halfway through encounters sometimes to keep players engaged even if they aren’t the best at stealth or are struggling at running away.

While the fun of running away from horrors and eventually facing the fear of dealing with them is one of the core elements of Little Nightmares II, the other is puzzles and for the most part the game features plenty of solid puzzles and subtle environmental ones that, while not particularly challenging, require some extra thought to complete and this is helped by the fact that Mono is not alone in his journey. Despite how it may seem, this is not a co-op game by any means and instead Six is entirely AI controlled and will take actions of her own when near puzzles or interactable objects. This means that Six will occasionally move towards the proper direction of where players may need to solve something, help carry objects, or assist in long jumps. Of course Mono can also hold Six’s hand and call out to her if the player feels like which is a nice touch though it does break a bit of immersion sometimes as Six can often be clearly visible to an enemy that will instantly kill Mono and will ignore her entirely.

It is also nice to note that one particular level features a returning element from a piece of DLC in the first game as Mono will find a flashlight that, when aimed at a certain type of enemy, will freeze them in place. Requiring players to not only navigate a level alone, trying to solve puzzles, all while keeping horrific creatures at bay with a flashlight makes for some great tense gameplay and one of the best moments that don’t involve the twisted adults.

Visuals & Audio

As mentioned before, one of Tarsier Studios’ strengths in the first game was creating gloomy creepy atmospheres stages that the player must navigate through and thanks to Little Nightmares II being a bit bigger in scope, the team has been more creative with their world designs this time around and players will truly appreciate the intricate details that are scattered throughout the various stages and the designs of the monstrosities that Mono and Six have to avoid and run away from in order to survive.

It also helps that the game features some great atmospheric build-up and sound design. With minimal music players will be able to hear creepy sounds coming from just off-screen, the cracking of a spine as enemies search for Mono, the shrieks of terrifying delight when discovered, and much more combined together to create a truly frightening atmosphere that works wonders when combined with the game’s overall design.

Overall

Exploring this unnerving land and uncovering more elements as Mono and Six explore makes for an interesting story and one that players will enjoy even if it still ends up feeling a bit on the short side featuring an occasionally clumsy AI companion and a few new mechanics that range from being a bit frustrating to highly enjoyable. Little Nightmares II continues to excel at providing players a uniquely horrific world to survive in with satisfyingly challenging platforming and puzzles that, while not complicated, take a bit of extra thought to solve and prove that the series can still keep going strong from here out.

Making the Internet Safer for Young People, Habbo Creator Sulake Launches New Terms & Conditions Initiative

Gamification Turns Long and Tedious Safety and Conditional Texts into an Interactive and More Approachable Experience for Users

Helsinki, Finland — February 10, 2021 — Presenting at the European Commission’s annual Safer Internet Day yesterday, virtual and social games developer Sulake, and the makers of Habbo, (which was recently acquired by Azerion), detailed its findings on how to make those long and boring, but so very necessary terms & conditions agreements more palatable for a younger audience within the virtual social platform.

Sulake’s challenge for the Youth Pledge is to empower young users in Habbo to make informed decisions when playing, by increasing the transparency and visibility of its terms & conditions agreements. T&C texts are almost universally arduous, tedious reads that are mildly scanned at best and, probably more typically, not read at all before ticking the “agree” box at the bottom. However the information contained in the terms & conditions is nevertheless extremely important in ensuring a safe, smooth and fun user experience in an online platform such as Habbo.

As a 20-year old product catering to a wide audience of players from adults all the way down to 13-year-olds, Habbo has a passionate and active community and Sulake frequently involves the community in making decisions about what they want and how they want to engage with the platform. Sulake started by organizing a focus group of users between 14 and 24 years old to first gather feedback about why the terms & conditions are for the most part ignored and set out to make a more interactive, interesting and simpler way of communicating this important information to users through gamifying the T&Cs and integrating it into the new user tutorial.

“In our goal of contributing to universal internet safety and transparency with our community we wanted to involve young players in this process to give them a voice in how they want to receive this information,” said Raquel Alvarez, Customer Experience Director at Sulake. “Unsurprisingly our focus group found the T&C texts long, boring, complex and repetitive. What we have now is a hybrid of tutorial and T&Cs that feature some video features with a bit of gamification to increase engagement and transparency, as well as overall understanding of do’s and don’ts.” Raquel Alvarez presented these findings at Safer Internet Day 2021, a landmark event in the online safety calendar which started as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005. Safer Internet Day is now celebrated in approximately 170 countries worldwide to combat emerging online issues and concerns from cyberbullying, to social networking, to digital identity.

About Habbo & Sulake
Sulake is a social entertainment company focused on providing a safe and fun online service for self-expression through its games, Habbo and Hotel Hideaway. Sulake was founded in 2000 by a small team of passionate people and now after 20 years, Habbo is still one of the largest virtual communities in the world, reaching players all over the world each month. With paying customers in over 115 countries and over 850,000 active users a month, Habbo continues to be a hugely popular and globally recognised brand.

Welcome back to your hometown with the ANNO 1800 season 3 pass

Welcome back to your hometown with the ANNO 1800 season 3 pass

Shine a new light on your city with harbour, tourism, and new businesses in the new season for Anno 1800

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA February 10, 2021 — Today, Ubisoft announced that Anno 1800™, is releasing a Season 3 Pass composed of 3 DLCs, “Docklands”, “Tourist Season”, “The High Life”, as well as 3 exclusive ornaments. The Season 3 Pass will invite players to discover harbour trades, tourism, and manage big city-building heights. Players will experience a new way of exporting and promoting their cities thanks to modular warehouse district, tour busses, and skyscrapers. The new season follows two successful years, which saw 1.7 million players around the globe at the end of 2020.

“Docklands” is the first DLC from Season 3, releasing on February 23, 2021. Anno fans will transform their city by building a modular warehouse district, starting with the main building, which is inspired by the world-famous “Speicherstadt” (the world’s largest warehouse district and an UNESCO World Heritage site in Hamburg, Germany). Docklands will also provide Anno 1800 with a new way of trading, allowing players to export rare goods and reinforce their economy. Alongside Captain Tobias Morris, who will be the link between the players and companies all over the world, players are given the possibility to encounter interesting exports and become a market leader.

Season 3 Pass will also introduce players to the tourism industry through “Tourist Season,” scheduled for Autumn 2021. Players, among others, will keep visitors entertained with enriching activities and delicious dishes from their best restaurants, while also setting up a tour bus network in their cities. “The High Life”, on the other hand, will teach Anno adepts how to manage a big city full of skyscrapers, and how to satisfy demanding citizens with new commercial goods and malls in Winter 2021. This will permit players to customise their Anno 1800’s Old World session with brand new elements, such as new monuments, hotel, restaurants, buildings, and malls to progress their city.

There will be two Anno 1800 Year 3 Editions, available as of today:

  • Complete Edition Year 3: Features main game, Deluxe pack, and all 3 season passes
  • Gold Edition Year 3: Features main game, Deluxe pack, and Season 3 Pass

These will be available, replacing the old editions.  In addition to the three DLCs, Anno 1800 will receive free Game Updates to accompany each DLC release, which will focus on improving the gaming experience.

Developed by Ubisoft Mainz, Anno 1800 has allowed players to evolve and gain new skills as a ruler. Players can create their cities –big or small — plan efficient logistics networks, settle new continents, send out global expeditions, and dominate their opponents by diplomacy, trade, warfare, and new tourist attractions. The Anno 1800 post-launch plan offers new adventures, challenges and tools to the players to sharpen their skills and succeed in Anno’s world. In addition to the Season Pass 3 content, regular updates are bringing new free content to all players.

Since its creation, Anno 1800 has been dedicated to incorporating the Anno community into its thinking process.  Players have been solicited to take part in the creation and the development of the game by giving feedback through the Anno Union. Once again, players will be requested to decide on what cosmetic DLC they want. This collaboration between players and the studio is integral to the development team to create the best fitted game for its fans. Providing Anno community with the most customised and pleasant game possible, satisfying both players who enjoy the strategic aspect of Anno and those keener on the beauty aspect, is an important task for Anno team.

Anno is available on the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games store for Windows PC. Season Pass 3 will be available for AU$29.95.

Grappling Hook Platformer Get-A-Grip Chip Swings onto Nintendo Switch March 25

Grappling Hook Platformer Get-A-Grip Chip Swings onto Nintendo Switch March 25

New PC Update Launches Alongside Nintendo Switch, Introduces Unlockable Skins

NEW YORK — February 9, 2021 — Get-A-Grip Chip, the charming and satisfyingly challenging grappling hook 2D platformer from Redstart Interactive, escapes ROBOCO Manufacturing via Nintendo Switch on March 25. Face new challenges and earn cosmetic rewards in both the Nintendo Switch and PC versions via a simultaneous update.

Like any other day on the assembly line, Chip and Scan-It Janet happily build Battery Bots. When a factory mishap damages Janet’s circuitry, the discombobulated droid destroys the floor in a flash. Now it’s up to Chip to save the lost Battery Bots and help Janet return to her senses.

Any other wheeled, land-locked robot would find ascending ROBOCO daunting, but not this chap. Chip’s head-mounted magnetic grappling hook makes vertical traversal a breeze. Roll across platforms then launch the hook to acquaint Chip with a fun little thing called the Y-Axis. Get-A-Grip Chip’s satisfying single-button + dual joystick control scheme ensures challenge arises from intelligent, intuitive level design instead of wrestling with that darn controller.

With more than 200 Battery Bots awaiting rescue across 30 lovingly-crafted levels through five diverse worlds, Chip’s got plenty of work to do. Master the hook and fling through the increasingly intense Assembly, Incinerator, Abandoned, Innovation, and Shipping floors. Chuck Chip over chainsaws, launch over lasers, and even escape chases with Scan-It Janet.

Some Bots wait in plain sight while others are hidden in secret rooms off the beaten path. Sure, Chip can beat the game by saving only 120 bots, but why stop there? Get-A-Grip Chip’s Switch debut and accompanying PC update introduces eight new cosmetic skins earned by completing various challenges. Dress up in solid gold or don a vampire outfit, then strut Chip’s stuff and push those skills even further with per-level leaderboards that encourage further mastery.

Navigating treacherous terrain never gets too stressful thanks to an aesthetic inspired by cute retro cartoons. An eclectic score courtesy of Eva Lawitts’ project Stimmerman propels the platforming to new heights with a toe-tapping mix of loungey jazz, hypnotic hip-hop, and even surf rock. And the best part? No head-mounted magnetic grappling hook required to headbang along.

“While Get-A-Grip Chip starts with an assembly line, we hope Nintendo Switch players will feel the love we personally put into making each level,” said Vicky Wei, lead level designer at Redstart Interactive. “Chip’s ‘just one more try’ nature makes it a perfect fit for the platform, and we hope PC players love the new challenges and cosmetic rewards we added.”

Get-A-Grip Chip launches on Nintendo Switch™ March 25 in English and Japanese for $14.99. For more information on Get-A-Grip Chip, please visit the official website, follow on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and join the Discord

Background and rationale

Just For Games is a leading French game distributor and publisher of games for PC and consoles. JFG distributes primarily in the premium segment and in close collaboration with international gaming publishers such as Microsoft, Maximum Games and Marvelous. Furthermore, JFG holds one of the largest game catalogs of Nintendo Switch games in France, and is the third largest player in Nintendo Switch game distribution. In addition to distribution, JFG owns a publishing business that has grown rapidly since its inception two years ago, and currently accounts for about 1/10 of sales. The publishing business has already established itself as number one in physical game sales within the back catalog. Just For Games is based in Paris and is made up of twelve employees.

The acquisition of JFG is a major step forward in Zordix’s strategy to expand globally, and the transaction opens up for further acquisitions, both within publishing and game development. JFG strengthens Zordix’s existing publishing activities and diversifies its operations. It is a transformative and complementary acquisition that strengthens finances and creates stability as well as room for continued growth.
