World’s End Club

Publisher: NIS America
Platform: Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

Bringing together the writer of the Danganronpa series and having them work with the director of the Zero Escape franchise will bring fans rushing to whatever the pair are working on. These incredibly popular visual novel puzzle games are mainstays of the genre and with World’s End Club seeking to combine their talents into an entirely new property, fans were quite eager to see what would come of the game. With a toned down narrative and more childlike focus, those familiar with the previous two properties may want to keep their hopes in check.

Story

The Go-Getters club, an afterschool group of middle schoolers, is traveling on a bus on an apparent field trip when suddenly an apparent meteor strikes Tokyo, setting the world on a path towards apocalyptic ruin. When the children wake up not only is the bus driver missing but they have all been transported to a strange underwater amusement park that was abandoned a year prior and affixed with a strange bracelet on each of their arms. A mysterious creature appears and informs the children that they must play a “Game of Fate” if they have any hopes of escaping and they must complete a Task on a wristband to do so. The only problem is, only one person from the club can win and everyone’s Tasks are on different wristbands, meaning that not only must they compete against one another but they cannot trust each other since only one of the group can survive.

Although this death game may seem like a perfect start, and it just so happens to be one as well as players will quickly see just how far certain members of the group are willing to go and how manipulative they can be, things quickly come to a conclusion and move beyond that aspect to an entirely different type of story that is unfortunately far less interesting and plodding despite the amount of twists that the game tries to throw in. This is primarily due to the fact that many of these twists not only feel thrown into the plot as something of an afterthought but other larger questions that players should have about what is happening in the world or why things are happening as they are either brushed aside or simply not answered.

One element that still does remain fairly strong in World’s End Club is the cast of characters as well as the actual narrative that is tied to these characters. The core plot as a whole works fairly well thanks to the cast and they truly help carry World’s End Club as they are developed throughout the story. It is interesting to note that the game does feature “story” and “camp” sections where players will generally learn more about members of their club as well as make various choices that can send the story down a branching path. That being said, not every character is a winner in this regard and it does feel like the cast could either have been trimmed down to give the strongly written characters more time to shine or polish everyone at least a little bit more and perhaps avoid more of the gameplay aspects of the title as a result.

Gameplay

The third aspect of most chapters comes in the form of “Acts” where players will then need to partake in some of the simplest gameplay mechanics around. To avoid spoiling things, players will eventually find members of the Go-Getters club awakening special powers that can then be used to solve puzzles or take on a potential threat. The problem is, none of the puzzles are actually challenging in any regard nor are they even that creative. While it is possible that the game was designed with a younger audience in mind, even playing on the hardest difficulty available will be a slog for even most younger gamers.

Along with puzzle solving and reading through plenty of dialogue players will also find that they will need to navigate through a number of platforming sections as well. The issue with these however tends to be the fact that the controls are a bit too rough and a failure will often result in instant death that even frequent checkpointing does little to alleviate. Combining simplistic puzzles with roughly designed platforming sections often resulted in any gameplay outside of the actual visual novel elements of World’s End Club being more annoying than anything else.

Visuals & Audio

With World’s End Club being released on the Switch the developers have managed to make the most out of the console’s ability by using a colorful and creative art style that is not only fairly unique in a way that blends anime aesthetic with comic styling but also makes sure that all of the character designs have a memorable enough appearance to them. Sure, there may not be any significant mascot character like many have come to expect from one half of the team but the designs are still handled incredibly well with the game running smoothly throughout.

It also helps that NIS America has provided a very satisfying English dub that makes sure every character, even those with smaller roles, have voices that chime in to keep players invested in the gameplay, though if players prefer the Japanese voice track, they can choose to swap between the English and original Japanese dub whenever they choose. Along those same lines World’s End Club also has a fitting sound track with plenty of variety to fit the wide range of experiences that the characters end up experiencing throughout the twisting story of the game.

Overall

World’s End Club may have a great start and a decent enough story after that point which is held up by some solidly written characters but unfortunately with many twists actually detracting from the story, it ends up being a fairly forgettable experience. To make matters worse, any narrative that may start gaining momentum is often stopped thanks to the inclusion of some watered-down and oft boring gameplay segments.

BANDAI NAMCO ENTERTAINMENT INC. CONTINUES ITS GREEN JOURNEY AS IT JOINS THE PLAYING FOR THE PLANET ALLIANCE

The Company Vows to Reduce Carbon Emissions and Actively Support Green Initiatives through 2050

SANTA CLARA, Calif., (October 20, 2021) – Leading video game publisher and developer BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. today announced that it has joined the Playing for the Planet Alliance which was launched on the 23rd of September 2019 during the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit and is facilitated by UN Environment. By joining the Alliance, member companies make commitments ranging from integrating green activations in games, to reducing their emissions and waste, and supporting the global environmental agenda.

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc.’s participation in the Playing for the Planet Alliance encompasses a four prong approach to improving its business practices and in promoting a green mindset through its video game products which the company will review and seek to accelerate each year. These include:

  1. A commitment to executing the sustainability policy put forth by its parent company, BANDAI NAMCO Holdings on April 16, 2021. This policy dictates that all BANDAI NAMCO Group companies must reduce carbon emissions by 35% by the year 2030 and be carbon net-zero by 2050.
  • BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. participated in the United Nations Environment Program’s Green Game Jam in 2021 with the PAC-MAN mobile app by creating a new in-game event focused on sharing a message about the importance of reforestation. The company has set a goal to engage 1 million players in this event and drive at least 10% of participants to sign an online petition urging world leaders to protect forests as a key line of defense against climate change. For more information about this petition, please visit: www.play4forests.org.
  • Devise plans for the next in-game event focusing on saving and cleaning the oceans in preparation for the company’s participation in the United Nations Environment Program’s Green Game Jam in 2022.
  • Establish BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. as an active advocate and example for our development partners, affiliates, etc. to learn more about the United Nations’ Playing for the Planet Alliance program so they too can implement similar policies and work towards improving the environment within their respective organizations.

“I am very proud of BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. in joining the Playing for the Planet Alliance, as one of the first Japanese game publishers/developers,” said Yasuo Miyakawa, Chief Executive Officer of BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. “As a company, we are nothing without the support of our customers, as a species, we are nothing without the life sustaining support of our planet. We must act holistically and responsibly in order to improve, protect, and preserve the environment for future generations.”

In addition to its participation in the Playing for the Planet Alliance, the BANDAI NAMCO Group has set an internal sustainability policy for all group companies to adopt in their respective businesses. The Gundam Recycling Project is one of the examples in-line with this policy. Currently available only in Japan, this program encourages builders of Gunpla (plastic model kits from the Gundam series) to drop off runners (unused plastic model frame sections) at approximately 190 amusement facilities operated by BANDAI NAMCO Amusement Inc. The collected runners are recycled along with plastic waste from the Gunpla manufacturing process thereby preventing additional plastic waste from reaching landfills for a more sustainable society.

NeocoreGames would like to thank again everyone who joined us during our Kickstarter campaign or during the Early Access period, provided feedback, suggestions and contributed to creating Knight’s Tale.

Before the 1.0 launch, NeocoreGames will release a final Early Access update in December with the first iteration of the PvP feature added.

Set in a dark fantasy world based on the Arthurian myth (and our previous King Arthur strategy games), this Tactical / RPG hybrid begins right after the famous battle of Camlann, with a twist:

You are Sir Mordred, the nemesis of King Arthur, the former black knight of the grim tales. You killed King Arthur, but with his dying breath, he struck you down. You both died – and yet, you both live.

The Lady of the Lake, the ruler of the mystical island of Avalon brought you back to end a true nightmare. She wants you to go on a knightly quest. She wants you to finish what you have begun. Kill King Arthur – or whatever he has become after she took his dying vessel to Avalon.

MAIN FEATURES

Your Fights
Control a small team of heroes and fight grueling, but satisfying battles with a deeply engaging, tactical turn-based combat system. Choose from more than 30 heroes across six diverse classes and combine hundreds of skills and artifacts to assemble an efficient team.

Your Heroes
Gather your own Knights of the Round Table and send them on knightly quests. These heroes are the most important resources and the most complex gameplay elements at the same time. But beware! Death is always final! You must manage them at the Round Table accordingly, planning ahead before going into battles. The character progression system is designed to be as deep as in the traditional RPGs: heroes level up on unique skill trees and the complex loot system provides unique options to fine-tune their tactical capabilities. Each hero has a distinctive personality and their loyalty is constantly changing through the decisions made by the player –  in certain cases they can even leave the Round Table and turn against you.

Your Kingdom
See the entirety of Avalon presented on an Adventure Map, observe all the territory, select your missions and explore various places. Management in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale focuses on rebuilding Camelot and expanding the mystical Stronghold with new buildings that each unlock various upgrades, and also offers different ways to heal up and manage the heroes of the Round Table.

Your Legend
Play as Sir Mordred, the former nemesis of King Arthur. Explore the mystical island of Avalon, venture on knightly quests and make decisions in various encounters where you’ll need to make moral choices, as in most RPGs, which all have impact on the story and your Morality. The end of the campaign opens up new endgame content for the bravest of all: tough new challenges appear on the map with challenging, mythic boss fights and random quests, loot, and character progression ultimately leading to the banishing of Balor, the monstrous god-king of the Fomorians himself.

Beyond the Legend
Complete more than 50 unique points of interest on the Adventure Map, including 20 story missions and various side quests, taking place on diverse terrains. Journey to dark castle dungeons and the forests of the Sídhe, all built by using photoscanned environments and complemented by high-quality mocap animation, then rendered inside a modern PBR engine utilizing DirectX 12 to support strong, atmospheric effects. Challenge seven enemy factions, fight more than 50 types of enemy units, and overcome ten incredible boss fights throughout your quests.

Celebrating Three Epic Months of Back-to-Back Blockbuster Game Launches in Xbox Game Pass

by Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Game Studios

This has been a remarkable year for Team Xbox and for you, our fans. We welcomed Bethesda to the family, announced a new slate of games together in June, and launched Psychonauts 2 and Microsoft Flight Simulatortwo of the highest-rated games of the year, into Xbox Game Pass. Twenty-five million players have now joined us in Sea of Thieves and your passion for Series X-shaped appliances has made the “Mini Fridge” a real thing. Our players are at the heart of everything we do and we couldn’t be more thankful for your incredible support.

Now, just weeks before the Xbox 20th anniversary in November, we’re excited to kick-off three epic months of back-to-back blockbuster game launches in Game Pass:

  • The Age of Empires franchise has been a major part of Microsoft’s gaming legacy for 24 years and the Oct. 28 launch of Age of Empires IV will be our biggest yet, bringing the evolved real-time strategy game to a new generation on Steam and Game Pass for PC on day one.
  • Minecraft will join Game Pass for PC on Nov. 2, followed by new Minecraft Dungeons Seasonal Adventures in December, and Caves & Cliffs: Part II later this year.
  • On Nov. 9, gaming’s premier racing franchise returns when Forza Horizon 5’s open-world adventure in Mexico speeds into Xbox Game Pass. Our biggest Forza Horizon ever and winner of the Most Anticipated Game of E3 awardForza Horizon 5 will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC and Steam, and Game Pass including console, PC and Cloud Gaming (beta).
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition launches Nov. 18 as a free update for existing players, including Game Pass members, with five new aircrafts, eight new airports, new Discovery Flights and tutorials, and highly requested community features like DX12 support. Microsoft Flight Simulator will also release the exciting Reno Air Races, which features the fastest motorsport on Earth will also be available on Nov. 18.
  • The Master Chief returns on Dec. 8 with Halo Infinite. This is the Halo we imagined 20 years ago, finally come to life in the largest Halo game we have ever made. Halo Infinite will be available in Game Pass when it launches across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Game Pass Ultimate members will also receive monthly multiplayer bonuses as part of the Perks program.

Our teams have also been expanding on the games you love. These last few months you explored Minecraft: Caves & Cliffs Part 1, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s LifeState of Decay 2: HomecomingGrounded: Hot and Hazy, and last week’s Halo: The Master Chief Collection Season 8. We’re honoured that millions of you continue to play in these worlds together.

Over the past two decades, the Xbox community has made gaming a place of joy, inspiration, education, and social connection. Games build bridges and forge bonds between friends and family, as well as give people new ways to connect.

We invite you to join us on Nov. 16 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Xbox and Halo with a fun, digital broadcast for fans around the globe. While we won’t announce any new games, this anniversary broadcast will be a special look back at 20 years of Xbox. We’ll share more details soon, so stay tuned.

We’ve been hard at work to deliver three months of back-to-back game launches. And while we hope you’ll join us in celebrating 20 years of Xbox history, know that we’re hard at work on the road ahead and what’s to come in the next 20 years.
