Having Fun With Mods in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

What is one advantage of a former console exclusive finally making its way to PC? Ultrawide monitor support? Sure, there’s that. We might get a “more complete” package in terms of DLC and bonus content all wrapped into one? Yeah, that happens as well. But I’ll be focusing today on something that’s sort of exclusive to PC. Mods. Loads and loads of mods.

It didn’t take long after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for the first mods to start popping up. Alternate costumes at first, slight gameplay tweaks through mods, and so on. But then things started to get a bit crazy. Now you can play as Goku or even Big Smoke from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and although the symbiote suit from the Spider-Man 3 movie isn’t officially in the game, it is now only a few clicks away – thanks to the magic of modding.

Of course, I couldn’t resist fooling around some more after I completed the game so what you see above is a video compilation of my favorite mods for Spidey. I got to play as Stan Lee, Kingpin, Aunt May, Daredevil and waaaaait for it – Kermit the Frog. Hey, if the option is there……why not go for it.

Why I’m Excited For Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Coming to PC

It’s finally done. I completed Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered twice and got all achievements (or “platinum”, as console players would say). I just have to kill some time in between and move on to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales that’s just around the corner.

While we don’t have a set PC release date, we’ve been told that the release window will be in Fall 2022 so that could be anytime from September to November. In any case, it will be released by the end of the year for sure and I have no doubt in my mind that Nixxes Software will do an amazing job when it comes to porting it. Waiting is hard, so recently I’ve been spending some time watching random gameplay clips of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on YouTube and I have to tell you – I like what I’ve seen so far. Here are some things that really got my attention.

A new protagonist

While we get to swing and zip around the same map of New York, we don’t get to play as Peter Parker anymore. If you played Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered you will remember the moment when Miles also gets bitten by a spider that gives him powers and in the post-credits scene, he finally reveals his powers to Peter. So with a new protagonist, we shall also get new swinging animations, combat moves, and skills. Can’t wait.

Let it snow, let it snow ♪

Remember when I mentioned the same map of New York? Well, that’s only….partially true. While we might zip around the familiar buildings and landmarks, the whole city of New York will be covered by a fresh coat of paint. And by that I mean snow. Just look at this image above and try to tell me that doesn’t look amazing. It sure does!

Zap & hide

I also mentioned new skills but what’s even more interesting are some abilities that are exclusive to this Spider-Man, notably venom blast and camouflage. Remember that Electric Punch suit power from here? It was a great way to stun and control enemies while dishing out the damage. Look forward to the flashier and improved version of it here. And camouflage does exactly what it implies – turn you invisible. In Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered the closest you would get to being invisible was during the stealth takedowns. Once you have been seen, it was full combat mode until you take down every single enemy. But Miles Morales solves that easily.

Suits and more suits

After I finished the campaign in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, my main motivation for 100% completing the game was the incentive for unlocking more suits. Some of them were tied to crime tokens, some to side missions and so on…..you get the idea. Based on what I’ve seen, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will have a lot of swaggy outfits, but I especially want to single out his futuristic 2020 suit. Simply amazing!

A cat companion

Ok, this should technically also go into the suits section, but also…….should it really? I mean, cmon, you get a cat as a part of your suit that occasionally assists you during takedowns and cheers on you during fights. Also, look at that cute Spider-Man mask on its face. Anyway, the actual name is “Bodega Cat Suit” and it is awarded by finishing the story and also something called a “Cat’s Pyjamas: mission. No clue what that might be but we shall all find out about it eventually. Around or after September, I suppose. In any case, if anyone from Sony is reading this by any case, we won’t hold it against you if you move up the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales by a week or two.

Video Review

Overview

Across the Obelisk is a roguelite RPG deckbuilder. Players will guide one of the many adventuring parties entering a mysterious forest in hopes of saving the princess and netting a huge reward. The game offers solo and co-op gameplay, 16 unlockable characters, and over 500 cards and items.

Story

Roguelites are traditionally weak on story while RPGs are usually story rich. Across the Obelisk is somewhere in the middle. It’s roguelite nature means the individual storylines are abbreviated, more focused on random one-time events that litter the game. It is nice to see the character quests and dungeons provide a little more meat, even if it simply extends the sub-plots to two or three events.

The writing is short and to the point. It strikes the right balance of serious content with a dash of humour thrown in to keep things light.

Gameplay

The deck building gameplay is excellent. Every character has a starting deck of 15 cards. New cards can be selected as rewards after each combat encounter. Players can also further customize their deck in the town located at the start of each map. There, players can remove, add, or upgrade cards in exchange for gold and shards earned over the course of the game. For the most part, the cards are well designed. There’s lots of opportunities for creative combinations, and most cards feel like they have some usable purpose. There are a few duds though, and sadly some of those cards have found their way into the starting characters’ decks. Reginald is a good example as I can’t imagine anyone bothering with Foresight and Healing Rain is a horribly inefficient use of deck space.

The map design is excellent. Across the Obelisk is built around sprawling maps with plenty of branching paths and side areas to explore. There are dungeons and character quests spread around the map that gives a chance to make runs with specific objectives in mind, whether it’s to unlock a new character or focus purely on beating the game. The events feel meaningful as there are some nasty consequences for failing. It’s great that the game provides the probability of success for actions relying on chance as failure often adds a debuff card to the deck.

The game’s RPG elements will feel familiar to anyone who has played a fantasy RPG before. The classic tank, healer, caster DPS, and physical DPS roles are present. There are also two separate levelling trees. The perk tree is permanent and carries over between games. This tree is focused on improving existing stats or increasing starting gold and shards. The trait tree resets each time players start a new run. This tree lets individual characters specialize in a role by doling out powerful, character exclusive cards and abilities. This tree is the most interesting part of the game’s RPG mechanics as it provides some intriguing options that can create potent synergies with the right decks. As a result, each level up in this tree feels like a big, satisfying power spike.

The status and resistance systems are one of the best parts of Across the Obelisk. There are plenty of status effects, and they can snowball into a nasty avalanche in either direction, so managing status effects is a big part of the strategy. Individual resistances are closely tied to the status effects, so exploiting openings created by resistance weakening status effects will be part of any good strategy. The sight status is one of the few duds in the game. It seems like a complete waste of space as its very difficult to take advantage of knowing what cards will be played against you. A lot of cards hit random targets, and it’s hard to mount a proper defence when there are four potential targets. This system is better left to deck builders that have one target or a more predictable targeting priority.

Across the Obelisk would be a home run of a deck builder if the early game grind wasn’t so painful. The first few hours of the game are a grind with almost zero hope of making any serious progression. These runs are all about grinding out enough perks, cards, and currency to start having competitive runs. What makes things worse is runs tend to be long as combat runs at a slow, methodical pace because fights are almost four versus four. Once players can consistently create their first few decks with some semblance of deck synergy, there is a huge power spike. But even then, progression in the game is measured in small steps as later content feels locked behind town upgrades and perk points. The grind is a sign the early game economy is broken and is in need of fixing. These first several hours of the game could really be smoothed out by further lowering the currency costs related to common cards. Another possibility is scrapping the first tier of town upgrades and applying their effects by default.

The user experience is good. It sticks to the standard deck building UI and control scheme. My only complaint is that cards can only be played using drag and drop. Across the Obelisk is an ideal type of game for a laptop, but no click to target makes playing with a trackpad a pain.

Visuals

The art style is generic fantasy, but the art quality is excellent. The character design is interesting. The enemies actually outshine the player characters who tend to be a little too traditional in comparison. The card art is done well. Each art piece does a good job channeling the card’s functions, and the art is usually unique enough to be able to quickly identify individual cards after a while without needing to read individual text.

Audio

The soundtrack is enjoyable. It’s perfect for a deck builder as it’s just exciting enough to set the right mood without being a distraction. The sound effects are passable. They aren’t the highest of quality, and the ones made with human actors are pretty rough sounding.

Overall

Across the Obelisk is so close to being one of those legendary deck builders that set the standard for the rest of the genre. It has the right chops: a solid implementation of RPG mechanics, excellent cards, and tons of combo opportunities for cool decks. It’s just a shame that the early game grind just hampers the experience to such a degree. For players who are willing to make that investment of time and energy, Across the Obelisk has a ton of excellent gameplay to offer.

How to Rule New York in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

Originally released in 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man finally found its way to PC this month, and, as far as I am concerned, it is a pretty amazing game. You can read more about it in my review here and what a splendid job Nixxes Software did with the port. A lot has happened since I wrote that review – I completed the game twice and even got all my achievements in it. With that said, I might know a thing or two on how to make your adventure in the city of New Year just a tad easier. So let’s get it started.

Skills

Skills are divided into three groups; innovator, defender, and web-slinger. The first group is more focused on aggressive play, the second on (as you might guess) defensive techniques, and the third group can help you a lot when it comes to web-swinging and zipping around New York. So what to pick?

Well, here is where it gets tricky. The game has 5 difficulty levels from easiest to hardest. Friendly neighborhood, friendly, amazing, spectacular, and ultimate. Everything below amazing is a walk in the park. I would also advise you against playing the first time on spectacular and ultimate difficulty (at least leave that for your New Game + run). By the time you get to the final act of the game, you will probably have all the skills unlocked but as far as the early game goes, you need to be smart about what to unlock.

  • Quick zip
https://imgur.com/sf9FPpU

An early unlock in the web-slinger tree that will help you swing around New York without losing any altitude or speed. You start by default with one quick zip but the skill gives you a bonus second one and it is great for navigating between buildings and catching up during vehicle chases.

  • Point launch boost
https://imgur.com/BwEme8g

Need that extra kick while jumping from one building to another? Point launch boost skill will give some wind to your sails, you just need to press A on contact with any surface you’re zipping to, and off you go. It’s that easy.

Gadgets

You start with your web shooters but as the story goes on, you get more and more unique gadgets that can be upgraded. Here are the few that got me out of tight spots more than once. Just know that you should upgrade them to max level as soon as you can since that increases their damage, capacity, and range.

  • Trip mine
https://imgur.com/qvubSKI

Or as I like to call it – one hit kill gadget. Seriously, these are the best. Stick one onto an enemy and wait until they connect to a surface. Any surface. They are instantly glued and webbed to it. Why waste time on finishers when you can take the enemy out of a fight way faster with trip mines? And if you’re lucky to get their sensor to connect to another enemy (I guess another body also counts as surface) you can glue both of them with one mine. I guess that counts as two birds with one stone? Or I suppose two birds with one trip mine.

  • Impact web
https://imgur.com/zUb84Da

Fast, efficient and it does its job. Their only flaw (that they share with trip mines as well) is that you can’t use them on brutes for instant incapacitation but any regular enemy has no chance against them. When upgraded to the max, they have an insanely large knockback, and if the enemy is between you and a wall, one precise shot will glue them right onto it.

  • Spider Drone
https://imgur.com/PagwrXN

You might occasionally get tired of pummeling one enemy after another, especially after doing so many crime events in free roam (hey, gotta earn those crime tokens somehow). Why not make the game do half of your job? That’s where the Spider Drone gadget comes in. When fully upgraded, it gives you four drone companions that will just fly around and shoot at nearby enemies for you until they’re out. All you need to do is run around and stay alive. Sounds easy enough.

Suit Powers

Those suits that you can craft and unlock later in the game are not just for show. Each of them comes with a unique suit power and the powers are not locked to that particular suit. So once you unlock the suit and its power, you can enable it on a different suit with no restrictions. Out of 4 suit powers in the game, I found the next two to be the most valuable when it comes to taking down enemies.

  • Web Blossom
https://imgur.com/XYfwIfL

Even though it is one of the first suit powers you get, it is also one of the most efficient ones. Perfect for close quarters. Lure a bunch of enemies next to walls, fire up web blossom and splatter them all over the room.

  • Electric Punch
https://imgur.com/wLrlp0X

Don’t we all hate when enemies fight back? What if I told you that there is a way to make that nasty gameplay feature go away? That’s exactly what electric punch suit power does for you. Electrify your fists, punch away and watch enemies stay in place as they are stunned. The best part is that the electricity from your fists can be chained, so hit one enemy and everyone else nearby will suffer the consequences. Lovely.

Become An Unstoppable Kung Fu Machine With New Gameplay Modifiers Coming to Sifu This Month

Along with a new scoring system, players will be pushed to their limit chasing Kung Fu perfection

PARIS (Aug. 26, 2022) – Following the game’s Spring update, Sloclap have announced a release date for the next major update for the critically acclaimed Kung Fu beat-’em-up, Sifu. Launching on Aug. 31, Sifu’s free Summer 2022 update is focused on giving players more ways to play by adding a slew of new features including gameplay modifiers, a brand-new scoring system and additional stylish outfits. Sifu is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC via the Epic Games Store for $39.99 at www.sifugame.com. Owners of the game can look forward to the free Summer 2022 update arriving on Aug. 31.

For those who have already walked Sifu’s path to Wude, brand-new gameplay modifiers and a new scoring system will push their abilities and skills to the absolute limit, or give them the opportunity to beat on enemies stress-free. These modifiers swing in both directions, bumping Sifu’s challenge up by letting enemies ignore a player’s guard and preventing them from picking up weapons or giving them infinite health and structure, and unbreakable weapons. Players who want a true challenge can make their own “hardcore” runs by making enemies even stronger, reducing their character to a single hit point and removing aging as well as guarding.

Players who may like to brag about their mastery of Kung Fu can finally show off a new score that better reflects their fighting finesse. The new scoring system will take into account every punch, kick, sweep and finisher performed, doling out a ranking based on a player’s smoothness, efficiency and variety. Dismantle a group of enemies without getting hit, and players will be greeted with a score worth flaunting.

Speaking of flaunting, players will be able to show off their moves with two additional outfits. Accessed in the Wuguan, the Enforcer armor, a set that covers Sifu’s protagonist in a suit of tactical equipment, will be made available to owners of the game’s deluxe edition. All players will be able to access the second outfit, Master Hand. Featuring a sleek trench coat and a stylish hat, players will be challenged to avoid every incoming attack if they want to keep their look intact.

Following its launch in February, Sifu has been hailed as one of 2022’s early GOTY contenders, reaching more than one million copies sold in its first three weeks and receiving critical acclaim. Sloclap’s support of the game is planned to continue past this month’s update with two more arriving throughout the remainder of the year.
