Japanese Gamers Prefer Subs slightly more than Dubs

3

Exactly 6,656 were polled over the past two years in Japan, both through online forms and in-game packaging, on whether or not they prefer Subbed video games, Dubbed video games, or had a different choice.

For those of you who don’t know, a Dubbed video game is when the original audio was removed from the game, and another language was placed over it. Such as the upcoming FXIII is an English dubbed version of the game, which originally was in Japanese.

However some people could prefer the option that the game be in the original Japanese Version, while having English subtitles below during any scenes involving dialogue.

Only a slight percentage more preferred a subbed video game, instead of a dubbed video game, with subbed having 49% and dubbed having 47%. The final 4% chose Other, which is quite curious as to how else they would prefer the game being presented to them unless they wanted it in the original language with no subtitles at all.

Personally I believe that there really should not be any need for a forced choice. Games like Eternal Sonata had an option to either hear the Japanese, or the English dialogue. Though games like Star Ocean: The Last Hope only had English settings, which is depressing considering the character motions did not match the voices nor the timing.

Game developers should try to provide a choice for their consumers, especially if the game is a Japanese import. Though it may increase the amount of data on the disk, having both dialogue options on the game would provide a more in depth experience. Also as I said before, dubbing a game can cause mistakes in the translation, or even cutting out certain dialogue as it is lost in translation.

This is seen in Armored Core 4. This occurs near the end of the game and causes confusion as an enemy acts like he knows your character, however presents no reason for this. This is because the text was not translated in the localized version for American release and was instead removed.

Technology has come quite far and translation methods have improved, but its hard to forget the errors of the past when it comes to certain translations. Though it is also hard to look at these mistakes from so many years ago, and worry about the future.

Let is know what you prefere, Subbed or Dubbed vote and also leave a comment too 🙂

As with all gaming related dates, these are subject to change.

Thoughts:

  • Avatar Clothes as Deal of the week: Some people may see this as a good chance to pick up avatar clothes, but I see it as a week without a cheap game that could actually give me some enjoyment.
  • Call of Duty: WaW: Map Pack Bundle : If you are still playing Call of Duty: WaW and don’t have the Zombie filled map packs, now would be the best time to pick them up for 400MSP off. Ideally I would have liked to see the price dropped down to 1200MSP, but we can’t get everything in life.
  • More Movies: For those of you with the Zune video marketplace on your Xbox, you can now watch many more movies. I’d suggest Xmen Origins: Wolverine if you haven’t already seen it.

So what are your opinions on this schedule? Also, here is a quick question: how many of you have payed for a movie from the Zune Marketplace?

Yes you heard it.  Well we also heard it from Director of technology over at Sony’s Santa Monica Christer Ericson’s Twitter

So it looks like we don’t have to wait to for the paint to dry in the end as God Of War 3 will be installation free and ready to hit the ground running as soon as you throw it into your Playstation 3.  As stated by Christer God Of War 3 will only need 5mb to save your game.

This is great news for all you Playstation 3 owners that have next to no hard disk space left on their PS3 hard drives, especially owners of the original Playstation 3’s that have only 20gb in them.

Happy Days !! now all that’s left to see is how good the loading times are whilst playing and moving from one local to the other within the game.

God Of War 3 makes it’s way down to Australia on the 18th of March the rest of the world get it a few days before on the 16th.  Not long now !!

If you haven’t already pick up your copy grab it now for only $71 AU with free delivery

What do you guys think about the install free setup ? Would you rather have the option available or are you glad that you don’t have to go through the pain of the waiting for the install to complete.  Your thoughts and suggestions.

Don’t Let Ryo Hazuki borrow your motor bike

3

This cool video was featured on Sega’s blog today.  It shows Ryo Hazuki from Sega’s Shenmue borrowing his friends motorbike.  But why would he need it for ??

Click on the play button and find out for yourselves 😉

On a totally different note. I hope Sega are secretly working on the long awaited finale of Shenmue 3.  After playing the Yakuza 3 demo the other day I totally fell in love with it as it reminded me soo much of Shenmue.  I was walking around the streets of Tokyo FOR HOURS  like a kid in a candy store !!  I was stopping to read all the Japanese signs on every building (lucky I can now read Japanese, which makes playing the game even more fun).  I even played games in Club Sega and bought some bargains in Don Kihote (which even has its own theme song playing when you enter the store).  After all this… I have a feeling that Shenmue is just around the corner.

If sega can make a game so similar in every which way and call it Yakuza 3.  What’s stopping them from changing the scenery a little bit dropping Ryo’s character back in, brush up the finishing touches to the storyline which we all know is already written and ready to go, then slapping the title SHENMUE 3 on the cover.

Sega if you are out there and we know you are !! please hear our prays !! Ryo needs to ride his motorbike one last time in his OWN game !! 😉

Who else agrees with me on this one.  Your comments please !!

Thanks to Seth over at Capcom and IGN for this piece of information on the new Street Fighter IV coming in March for the Apple iPhone.  Video isn’t the best but you can clearly see Capcom have done a SUPER effort, the gameplay, speed and visuals are totally outstanding.

Bison and Street Fighter IV newbie Abel.

Capcom have reported that Street Fighter IV will be priced at $9.99 US
