A Day In A Warehouse in Eureka

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

The date is Saturday the 29th of October and we (Jess and Myself) are in attendance of a convention hosted by The Hub Productions called A Warehouse in Eureka. The event involved a few things and they were all centered around the guests that had been invited to attend.

The first event of the day was a Question and Answer session hosted by Eddie McClintock. The Q&A was incredibly fun as Eddie chose to answer questions more personally by roaming around the auditorium and meeting each audience member. Everyone had an amazingly good time as all of his answers were incredibly entertaining; especially the where he talked about one of his first on screen appearances.
In his first on screen appearance, he was apparently a dancer appearing in a soap opera, only he couldn’t dance and was urged into the role by his manager (if I remember correctly). He stood out against the dancers as he couldn’t dance (and didn’t look like a dancer) and his career went from there.

Throughout the day and between events, the staff had arranged for audience members to watch episodes of Eureka and Warehouse 13; as well play various kinds of games, such as celebrity heads for prizes. The prizes were all warehouse 13 and Eureka related in some way.

On the whole, the event was very contained, it didn’t stretch too much further from the auditorium that we were seated in; but it didn’t really need to. It also had a fairly small attendance rate, not many more than 100 people were there, so it felt a lot more comfortable and intimate with the guests.

The next guest was Colin Ferguson, who was insanely funny, and he also did a Q&A. The session took place immediately after lunch, so this had left people a little unsettled when it came to question time. And by unsettled, I mean that the audience was a little inactive in the question asking. It was okay though as Colin quickly took control over the session and utlilised his skills in stand-up comedy to engage with the audience.

One of the most fun things of this panel was when Colin pulled out his iPhone and began Skyping his co-workers. He almost revealed their phone numbers by accident on occasion, which was even more amusing. The audience requested the cast member to be called and Colin obliged. Of all the cast requested, we managed to speak to Fargo (Neil Greyston) who revealed that he was currently on set and working on a new movie, which sounded really fun. Sadly, we couldn’t get ahold of anyone else during this period, but we did sing happy birthday into the answering machine of one of the cast members.

After the attempted prank calls, the audience was much more settled and had plenty of questions to ask. Of all the questions, the most entertaining answers had to do with the stunts and jeeps on the set. Hearing stories about how Colin got burned (on the arm and again on the face) and how the stunt-men got injured made everyone cackle; as did the stories on how the jeeps were horrible to drive (and how the best looking jeep on the outside was the worst looking on the inside).

After an entertaining chat with Colin, Eddie had returned and it was time for a joint Q&A. The joint Q&A was pretty short though, but it was incredibly entertaining and the audience asked a few good questions. The best part about having the pair on stage was when it was time to get them to draw on their shirts to sell in an auction.

Eddie began work quickly on drawing a face on his, while Colin took a little while longer to work out what he was going to draw on himself. Eventually he settled on drawing and outline of the colon along the section of the body that it would have resided within. This colon would eventually turn into an outline of a mouth later, but it’s still a pretty interesting thing to have done on the offset.

After drawing on themselves, and each other, it was time to auction those shirts. And auctioned they were. Both shirts were sold for a combined total of over $400, and each winner had the shirts hand recieved to them by the guests. I had the pleasure of seeing Colin (who also had a higher amount bid on his shirt) strip down for the girl a row ahead of me. I should point out that I’m a straight guy, but man Colin was built like a tank under that shirt, if I was a chick I’d have been blushing hard. Eddie was also built, but he was nowhere near as attractive as Colin. I need to work out harder.

A short while after the auction, the guests had to leave the auditorium to prepare for autograph signings and the audience was included in another auction. This one had participants bidding against each other for rarer signed photos and other memorabilia from the cast and some items available only at comic-con in the US. Each item was heavily sought after by a few members in the audience and each winner paid a pretty hefty sum to win. So congrats to everyone that won something.

Unfortunately, Jess and Myself were unable to attend the autographs signings and closing due to other commitments, but we are incredibly sure that they would have been incredibly gratifying for everyone who was able to get an autograph (considering that I, myself, have waited in line for a signing in other conventions; so I know the feel).

Overall the event was an incredibly fun ordeal and the smaller attendance rate/ smaller venue made it feel that much more better. I’d recommend that any interested in pop-culture related events check out the Hub Productions and attend any future events that they may be interested in.

I would also like to mention that Warehouse 13 and Eureka currently run on air over here in Australia on both Foxtel and free to air TV (Channel 10). So be sure to watch those shows, as they’re incredibly entertaining.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North Gets a Launch Trailer

War in the North is hitting store shelves in just a few short days, and to give us one final taste of the game before it’s released, Warner Brothers and Snowblind Studios have released a trailer showing off the game’s combat, locations, and epic set pieces.

The game takes place concurrently with the events in the books, as a new fellowship between a man, an elf, and a dwarf is formed to fight an evil power rising in the North. The game will include characters and locales from both the books and the films, and your fellowship’s journey will intersect with some of the major players of Middle Earth, such as Gandalf and Elrond.

With such high production values and the experience of Snowblind Studios, could this Action RPG be the Lord of the Rings game we’ve all been waiting for?

We’ll just have to wait for November 1st (US) and 2nd (AU) to find out, when the game comes out for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.

Oh, and if you’re unfortunate enough to live in the United Kingdom, you’ll (for some unexplained reason) have have to hang in there until November 25th.

More One Piece: Gigant Battle 2 Characters Revealed

It has been revealed that the upcoming DS fighting game, One Piece: Gigant Battle 2 New World will feature 4 fan favourite characters: Rob Lucci, Nefertari Vivi, Wapol and the highly requested Eneru.

While these characters are certainly not going to play a large role in the storyline of the New World part of One Piece, there impact on the series as a whole was huge, thus making their inclusion essential.

One Piece: Gigant Battle 2 New World is set for a Japanese release date of November 17th, 2011. It has yet to be confirmed whether it will be localised. The first game in the series however is in the process of localisation, so who knows it may not be too far off the books.

Is Zynga On The Decline?

0

Zynga is the powerhouse when it comes to Facebook gaming. The creators of Farmville and Mafia Wars hit a gold mine with middle aged mothers and teenagers, the same way Rovio did with Angry Birds. However, that gold mine is running out as they are losing daily users. In fact, This is very worrisome as they plan to go public in November.

There is new evidence showing that three of the five new games aren’t really latching on for the company, losing 40% of their daily users for Empires & Allies, Pioneer Trail and Adventure Peak. Doug Creutz, analyst for Cowen and Company, has expressed fears over the company.

“We view the user trends at Zynga as extremely troubling given the apparent lack of organic growth, particularly in front of an IPO that continues to be talked about at rich valuations in the $10 billion range. At least as disturbing has been the degree to which new launches have begun rolling over almost immediately after the initial launch.”

He also measures up on the drop of users on the three new titles, believing that the games are “largely cannibalising users from old titles, and failing to attract new users to Zynga’s portfolio”.

What does this mean for Zynga? Is it back to the drawing board? I would say it is. If they want to regain their lost audience, amybe provide something that is not the same as every other game they release. Offer something brand new to wow your followers.

Ubisoft Expanding To The Middle East

0

Australia is on the decline in terms of the game industry, but it seems that the Middle East could be the next pocket. Ubisoft have announced that they will be expanding to the United Arab Emirates, settling in the capital Abu Dhabi. Operations will begin in December of this year and will add 100 jobs in the next five years. This adds to a list of studios already based in Canada, Europe and China. Here is what the publisher had to say about the move.

“A core team of Ubisoft veterans will help train an initial team of local recruits.”

Christine Burgess-Quémard, an executive director at Ubisoft worldwide studios, also added her opinion to the opening of a studio in the UAE.

“The demographics and the pool of skilled technical talent in the Middle East and North Africa region are key factors that will contribute to the success of this new studio.”

The studio will be headed by Ubisoft veteran of ten years Yannick Theler with the long term aim to produce original intellectual properties that may appeal to the local market. To start off, though, the studio will collaborate with other game studios to create games.

New Naruto Generations Screenshots

New screenshots for the forthcoming Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations have made their way online. With a whole range of characters from all generations of the Naruto Universe being featured in the shots.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations, doesn’t just have a lengthy name, it also has quite a lengthy list of playable characters. So much so in fact that it features more characters than any previous Naruto game. This landmark is heavily due to the fact that this is the first Naruto game to feature multiple generations of characters, from the deep mythology of the Naruto Universe.

You can check out the screenshots below. Be sure to sneak your way into the shoutbox and comments section to let us know what you think.

New Divas announced for WWE ’12’s DLC…

If you were planning on having Kharma or the Bella Twins rip apart the other WWE Diva’s in WWE ’12, you might have to grab some patience and a point card as THQ have now announced that certain current faces of the brand have been added in as DLC. Trish Stratus, Kharma, The Bella Twins, Vickie Guerrero and Alicia Fox will all be DLC only, and add to the already announced downloadables such as Mick Foley and Macho Man Randy Savage.

These downloadable personalities will be priced at $.99 (or 80 MS Points) for each, with players able to gain all the DLC by purchasing the Fax Axxess Pack for 11.99 (or 960 MS Points). Seeing Trish in a current WWE game is great and worth the extra buck, but I still wonder why such current faces such as the Bella Twins, Kharma, Alicia Fox wouldn’t be included by default. Nickel and diming aside though, WWE ’12 will finally lay the Smackdown on November 22nd and the “Diva Pack” will hit each online marketplace the coming month.

Tower Defense in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Ever thought to yourself, “Hey, I want to defend a tower in Assassin’s Creed!” Well you are in luck. You can now play a tower defense like mode called “Den Defense” in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

The new game mode will challenge players to defend a “den” from invaders, in what looks to be a new spin on the classic tower defense genre. This is one of those revelations that makes you wonder why you never thought about it yet when thinking about Assassin’s Creed. It is seemingly a perfect fit for the series and it aims to push to game beyond any other game in the series thus far.

Ubisoft have released a trailer to promote the new tactical game mode which you can check out below.

New One Piece 3D Short Film

Earlier this year a One Piece short film that featured entirely 3D modelled characters, was released in a double billing with a like-wise 3D version of Toriko (because Toriko lives on One Piece’s coat-tails). Now a sequel to the first One Piece 3D, is on it’s way under the title One Piece 3D: Trap Coaster.

While the first One Piece 3D movie, weighed in at 30 minutes in length, it’s sequel will total a mere 12 minutes. The film will hit screens in several theme parks in Japan. It is unknown whether it will get a release in theaters. As of now, it’s unlikely.

Battlefield 3 Review

Battlefield 3
Developer: DICE
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), PlayStation 3, PC
Release Date: October 25, 2011
Price: $59.99 – Available Here

Overview:
There are few series which can draw as much of a following like Battlefield has. There are plenty of modern military shooters on the market but this series has always stayed at the head of the pack, surpassing countless other titles and fighting for the lead against another popular shooter. The series has always had a slight edge over its opponents considering the Battlefield games have always consisted of large multiplayer maps, vehicles to destroy your opponents in and a massive amount of destruction. It has been only a year since Battlefield: Bad Company 2, but this marks six years since the first numbered sequel of the franchise. Does Battlefield 3 retain its place as perhaps the most thrilling and exciting shooter experience around? Let’s find out.

Visuals:
Now the first thing I should re-iterate is that this review took place on the Xbox 360 console. Unlike the PC or PlayStation 3 releases of the game, Battlefield 3 arrives on two separate discs and due to the limited amount of space on these discs there is an optional HD texture install that requires 1.5 GB of space on the hard drive. The reason this is optional is due to the fact that not all Xbox 360s come with a hard drive and most recent ones come with only 4GB.

Therefore I chose to try out the title momentarily without the texture pack installed in an effort to see how things would look between the two titles. Let me say this now, if possible free up space on your hard drive as the HD textures are practically a must. The difference in the texture quality is quite literally night and day. While the most drastic changes are in the environments themselves, one glance at the HD visuals you could see with the package should instantly convince anyone that the 1.5 GB HD Texture package is a necessity.

But on to the HD graphics themselves. Battlefield 3 uses the Frostbite 2 engine and this engine truly delivers amazing visuals. There are impressive visuals all around you as you play through the title’s campaign mode with many scenes simply breathtaking due to how amazing they look. The quality of the graphics you will be seeing is something that should not be missed as everything is impressively designed and textured.

A great example of this is best described through one instance in the multiplayer segment of the title where I was laying down suppressing fire while defending a capture point in Conquest on the roof of a building nearby. In the air above me I witnessed enemy jet damage an allied helicopter enough to force it to begin spiraling to the ground out of control. In an effort to avoid this now on fire spinning helicopter I ran to the staircase inside and took cover, only to witness the helicopter smash through the roof of the building, spin on its side as the rotor blades dug into the ground and tear apart 90% of the building I took cover in before exploding, only leaving the stairwell and a small portion of the roof remaining. This all played out like something that one would see in a pre-rendered cutscene, but was happening right in front of me in a random multiplayer match.

Of course there are a few problems with the engine as well. I’ve experienced a number of texture pop problems where the game took a few seconds to load in the HD textures and this was with both discs installed to the console. There are a few problems with character clipping as well, especially with legs sticking out of building walls that could potentially be an easy kill for those outside. These problems are merely a hindrance however for what is an amazing treat for the eyes.

Audio:
Nobody can ever say that Battlefield 3 is not an atmospheric title. As you play through levels and multiplayer matches you will not only hear realistic sound effects for everything that you are using, but likewise for everything around you. Battlefield 3 does everything it can to immerse you in the action as you move along a section of the field and hear a jet fly past in the distance and gunfire in the direction you are running towards.

Of course the voice acting is just as impressive with most characters sounding like they have been well trained and match the situation perfectly with their tones. More often than not your allied NPCs and even allied multiplayer characters will randomly yell out during action which makes the game all the more realistic feeling.

Single Player:
Now considering Battlefield 3 comes with two discs, it is worth noting that Disc 1 is multiplayer and co-op missions, while Disc 2 is the Single Player mode. This already should let you know what the priority in Battlefield 3 is, but nonetheless EA and DICE have created a rather exciting, if not short and linear experience for people to explore outside of the game’s multiplayer aspect.

Players are initially thrown, quite literally, onto a top of a moving train and have to perform a number of quick time events to enter into the train and begin to try and stop it by killing every terrorist on board and disable the bombs that are rigged to explode. Don’t worry too much though, because before you happen to finish that task you find out that what you just saw was the present, while the game immediately throws you into a flashback and begins to explain what exactly is going on.

Players jump into the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn who just happens to be in the middle of an investigation for something, at the time, have no idea about. The title quickly flashes back to his time in the field where both he and his squad are in combat in the Middle East. From there the player follows mostly in Blackburn’s footsteps until they find out exactly what is going on and venture through a couple of minor twists until ultimately the conclusion.

Now if this doesn’t sound like an exactly thrilling storyline the truth is that at its core it really is not. The storyline never really takes a chance to expand upon itself and the single player experience is unfortunately hindered by the fact that everything has been limited to a simple straight linear experience. This may work for other titles but the Battlefield series isn’t exactly a series that should have gone that route.
