Enterbrain Announces RPG Maker VX Ace, DS Plus

The RPG Maker series is quite popular in Japan and also has a small following in the West, as it allows aspiring game developers and hobbyists a chance to develop their very own sprite based RPG. Enterbrain, the developers of this series, have now revealed two new RPG Maker tools that will be released in Japan on December 15.

The first is for the main series entitled RPG Maker VX Ace, which means it will be for Windows PC. Essentially, it builds upon VX, the previous release and adds new features such as more character customisation, new enemy models, two layer backgrounds, “TP” as a parameter (alongside MP) and party members who follow the player character. Below is the video (in Japanese) showcasing these new features:

The second is entitled RPG Maker DS Plus, releasing for the DS. The creation tool, like VX Ace for the PC, will be more of an expansion for the previous game, in this case, RPG Maker DS, which was released exclusively for Japan. In DS Plus, players will be able to create RPG games using three new tilesets: school, sci-fi, and sengoku (samurai era). Check the trailer below:

I hope that we do see this released in English. I happen to be a fan of RPG Maker and have used XP and VX before, enjoying them both. Ace is the only one with any chance of English localisation, so I hope we do see this.

PSN copies of Battlefield 3 hitting glitches (Updated!)

In Europe, Battlefield 3 was released onto the Playstation Store for digital distribution. However, those copies of the game seem to be hitting a roadblock.

“EA have confirmed that there are issues with the digital build of Battlefield 3 (on the PS Store) which will be affecting people trying sign into Battlelog,” Playstation Community Team member “RabidWalker” said on the EU forum. “They are currently working on a patch for this, although no ETA has been given at the moment.”

It appears, according to Eurogamer, that since PSN copies of the game cannot be purchased used, no online pass functionality was included in the downloadable copy of the game. However, since the online pass was removed from the game, the game can not recognize Battlelog.

Yet another reason why online pass is incompetent.

Update! EA has issued a statement regarding this issue, and it appears that it may be fixed.

Electronic Arts states that: “EA WW Customer Experience is available any time of day to provide an immediate solution to any Battlefield 3 players on PSN that are experiencing log-in difficulties with Battlelog.”

MMO Erased During Maintenance Closes Up For Good

Over in Japan, a popular cash-shop MMORPG, M2, had its servers wiped during standard maintanance and was unable to be restored. This has lead to the company having to close the doors to it’s service to all players of the game.

The game developer, Sadanko, had the following announcement to make in regards to the closing of its service.

There is something we must inform our valued customers of.

On the 21st of October, 2011, at 20:00, we undertook emergency maintenance on the server due to a critical issue.

Service was to resume promptly, but work performed by Sankando could not restore the game’s data. It is tremendously regrettable, but unfortunately we have no choice but to end service. Thank you all for enjoying M2 for so long! Our heartfelt apologies for it having turned out like this.

The blunder has likely left millions of players without their afternoon hobby and they will likely have to migrate to a new MMORPG. There is no word on the effects that this had on the company financially.

Be sure to check out the webpage (Japanese) for more info.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations to be released without DRM on PC

asscreedlogo

Not much to report other than the fact that it’s good news! Ubisoft confirmed that the next game in the Assassin’s Creed series will ship on PC without Ubisoft’s notoriously disliked ‘always on’ anti-piracy software.

The news comes from gaming site Rock Paper Shotgun, which played with the theory that because of the technical issues and widespread consumer revulsion associated with always-on DRM, Ubisoft may be turning its back on the practice. It can only be a good thing, as the strategy only caused more bad than good across the community.

So will Ubisoft continue down this path without the DRM for PC releases in future? Perhaps that is now the case.

Famitsu Releases Ni No Kuni Scores

Famitsu, one of, if not the biggest Japanese video game magazine in existence, has reviewed Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, thanks to Andriasang. Now, if you are not familiar with how Famitsu scores work, basically there are four reviewers who give the game a score out of ten. Then each score is added together to give an overall score of forty. Quite simple, actually.

So how did Ni No Kuni fare in Famitsu eyes? Well here were the scores from each reviewer:

    1. Reviewer 1: 8
    1. Reviewer 2: 9
    1. Reviewer 3: 10
    1. Reviewer 4: 9

That’s a total score of 36 out of a possible 40, which is an outstanding score. Wow, one reviewer gave it a ten. Must have been impressed. Also, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Subbed Edition was also released. It had received 10, 10, 9, 10 for a total of 39/40. This is very surprising as first person shooters are not popular in Japan, let alone Western developed games, save a fair few. Square Enix publishes Call of Duty in Japan.

Here are the other games reviewed in this week’s Famitsu, including Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Saints Row: The Third and even Battlefield 3:

    1. One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 (DS): 8, 8, 9, 8
    1. Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger Atsumete Henshin! 35-Sentai! (DS): 7, 7, 6, 6
    1. Maple Story DS (DS): 7, 7, 7, 7
    1. Miss Princess (DS): 8, 7, 8, 7
    1. Shinobi 3D (3DS): 7, 7, 7, 7
    1. The Sims 3 Pet (3DS): 7, 7, 6, 6
    1. BattleField 3 (PS3/Xbox 360): 9, 9, 9, 9
    1. The Sims 3 Pet (PS3/Xbox 360): 8, 8, 8, 8
    1. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PS3/Xbox 360): 9, 9, 8, 7
    1. Saints Row The Third (PS3/Xbox 360): 9, 9, 9, 9

Vidzone Gets A Menu, Feature Update

If you have Vidzone for the Playstation 3 and has recently booted it up, then you may have noticed that the software has changed its look somewhat. That is because the video streaming service has received a user interface upgrade to allow a better way to enjoy the 1000s of music videos in amazing full-screen quality. Navigation isn’t the only update for the service. As a whole, the service has received an upgrade to allow a more simpler way to find your favourite music track. The upgrade comes with new features, such as:

    1. Zones: Instead of browsing through thousands of videos, users can go straight to a Zone that suits them most. Zones categorise music videos by genre or theme and direct users to the type of videos they want to see the most – making is easier and more fun to discover new videos or artists – Rock Zone, Pop Zone, Hip-Hop Zone, Party Zone or Live Zone are just a few examples.
    1. My Zone: Create a completely customized experience with the new My Zone feature. Music video lovers can add all their favourite playlists or TV channels and start building a library of only the music videos they love the most – then jump straight into the content from the VidZone home screen.
    1. V-Mix: This smart playlist generator will play music videos by artists similar to what the user is watching at that time.
    1. Social Connectivity: Confessing your love for a music video is simple. With Facebook integration users can share all their recommendations with their friends and with a few simple clicks they can invite PSN friends to join them in VidZone just as easily.
    1. Optimised Search: Completely updated, VidZone now offers up-front shortcuts to the most popular content, as well as a redesigned search function including ‘similar artist’ functionality that makes finding videos quick and easy. Brand new progressive search instantly displays results of artists / videos by just typing a few letters. The more letters typed, the more defined the search.

Vidzone is available for download on the Playstation Network. If you already have it, then the update will have already be done, so just boot it up and enjoy.
